    The article aims at the example of the Letter of James to show how the theological reforms and hermeneutic and critical New Testament editions were reproduced in Polish translations of the 16th and 17th centuries. The authors show that on the level of textual criticism and philological solutions, Polish New Testament translators really derived from the achievements of European biblical studies, but remained faithful to the confessional tradition and not to the Greek testimonies. The reception of Reformation at the hermeneutic and theological level looks much worse. Interpreters usually do not take up polemics or defensive positions.

    Opis:
    The contemporary translation strategies concerning equivalents of names from the field in translations of the New Testament actualise the conclusions drawn by researchers, who confront the nominations that are in use in the Polish language with their perceptions by those in question, that is black people. A response to a certain depreciation of the semantics of the lexemes Murzyn, Czarny (when used as nouns) is the selection of a safer strategy, which consists in transferring the adapted form from the source text (Etiop, Etiopczyk, Królowa etiopska, Niger).

    In our article we propose a new translation of Matth. 10–12 into Polish. AYer discussing other Polish translations of the text (in the footnotes), we suggestalternative options that would intensify the expressivity of the narrative and stress the semantic aspects that have been neglected in former Polish translations but seem to be important in the context of the postmodern reception of the biblical text.

    Opis:
    The author analyses translation equivalents of the names referring to black people (Gr. Αἰθίοψ, Νίγερ, Lat. Aethiops, Niger) in old Polish translations of the New Testament. He has excerpted translations based on Greek sources as well as on the Latin Vulgate, diversifi ed according to the translation method and religious denomination. The number of the excerpted Polish equivalents (transferred words: ‘Niger’, adopted words: ‘Murzyn’ (Negro), and its derivatives, ethnonyms: ‘Etiopczyk’, ‘Etyjopianin’ (Ethiopian), native words: ‘Czarny’ (Black)) have been confronted with the terms accepted in etymological dictionaries and history books. The author concludes that the translators from the Middle Polish period used the translation equivalents referring to black inhabitants of Africa quite freely. The reason for that was that the names ‘Murzyn’ and ‘Czarny’ were not burdened with such a stylistic and pragmatic load in the Old Polish language as they are in Modern Polish.

    Autor dowodzi, że tłumaczenie Nowego Testamentu z katolickiej Biblii Leopolity (1561) jest w znacznej mierze oparcie na tekście greckim Erazma z Rotterdamu oraz jego pracom tekstualno-krytycznym, zawartym w Novum Instrumentum. Autor dowodzi ponadto, że wpływ ten był eliminowany w zrewidowanej edycji Biblii Leopolity z 1575 r. Tezy te wsparte są analizą ośmiu przykladów wpływów prac Erazma na polską translację.
    Author argues that the translation of the New Testament from the Polish Catholic Leopolita’s Bible (1561) was, to a significant extent, based on Erasmus’ of Rotterdam Greek text, and textual-critical scholarship as in the editions of Novum Instrumentum. Furthermore author argues that this influence was being removed in the revised edition of the Leopolita’s Bible (1575) because it was considered as controversial by some of the Catholics. These theses are supported by discussing eight textual examples of Erasmus’ influence on the Polish translation (out of 18 identified dependencies).
