The basic assumption of this article on literary translation and translation constraints, is that a translator always leaves traces in his product. This observation is discussed from various angles: from the position of descriptive translation studies, from a cultural-literary perspective, and from the practitioner’s point of view. Special attention is devoted to annotation and other additions. The article ends with a case study on Kafka’s Der Process.

Opis:
The term “imagination” has numerous meaning: colloquial, paraliterary, scientific. They all refer to auto-communication, which is a conversation of an individual with him or herself, when our mind faculties: memory, intuition, observation, intelligence, knowledge – and imagination, too – compete for dominance or strive for harmonious cooperation. Similarly to the generally understood imagination, its particular, important species (literary imagination) requires internal classification, because it is always an imagination of role: of the author, the reader, the expert, the performer, the censor, the distributor, or sometimes of the translator. The question of translator’s and author’s status provokes a comparison between author’s and translator’s imagination: they share some qualities, but also have decidedly different ones. The opposition between created nature and creating nature, which is a notion used by Józef Czechowicz, might be helpful in capturing the similarities and differences. But this opposition, too, demands a literary and historical context. The author created by the romantic myth seems someone gifted with imagination creating literary worlds, which are limitless, whereas the author of realist works, especially diaries, must give priority to observation, when a piece of external, empirical reality is described and recorded. Baroque, romanticism, realism, expressionism, avant-garde, postmodernism differ in their canons of imagination. The creative process by the author of an original work becomes a negotiation between innovations of authorial fantasy and recreation of the canon. The translator is under much stronger pressure from his or her times, because his or her objectives and tasks are different. Usually, knowledge is enough for a translator: linguistic, historical, literary, common, encyclopaedic, specialised. If knowledge fails, the translator reaches out to imagination as an instrument for interpretation of source text, but this happens only when the text is ambiguous and rich in images. Be it as it may, the quality and range of translator’s activity are determined by someone else’s imagination, accumulated in the translated work, and present in its rhetorics.

Opis:
Paul Maar (born in 1937) is one of the most important modern German writers for children and young people. He is widely known for his bestselling series of books about Sams (1973) – a strange creature – a mixture of a child, a monkey and a pig that can grant wishes. Sams is an incorporation of anarchy and playfulness and in this way resembles Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi Langstrumpf, but first of all it refers to E. T. A. Hoffmanns fantastic tale “The strange child” (1817). Hoffmann’s and Paul Maar’s stories reveal a lot of similarities and both are revolutionary as far as the methods of children’s education are concerned. Both underline the importance of play, creativity and freedom for children’s development. The first book about Sams was translated into Polish in 2009, more than 35 years after its German premiere. The Polish version was probably too late to be able to play a similarly revolutionary role. The connection to E. T. A. Hoffmann’s “The Strange Child” could also not be noticed as its Polish rendition was published even later – in 2014 (translated by the author of the paper). But the shape of Polish translation can also be one of the reasons why Sams did not gain a comparable popularity as the original story. Polish Sams – due to some modifications in the translation – is a much more well-behaved and disciplined creature than the anarchic and playful German Sams.

There were translated about thirty books of Serbian literature in the period from 2007 to 2013, most of them were books of poetry. There were little number of translations in the literary magazines and journals. The number of translations is quite big but the reception of Serbian literature and culture was weak. The wars which accompanied the decay of the Second Yugoslavia has had big negative influence on the reception of Serbian literature and culture. Nowadays, after the fall of communism, literary contacts depend on initiative of individuals, the institution of translation literature has gone through the process of privatization.

The article aims at presenting an outline of the Ukrainian literature that has been popularised on the Polish publishing market after 1989. The transformation taking place in Ukraine encouraged Poles’ interest in their south-eastern neighbour. This popularity is not yet reflected in their acquaintance with Ukrainian literature published in Poland. This shows that Ukraine is still perceived through a political rather than literary or cultural perspective. The undertaken analysis revealed that the range of Ukrainian literature in translation offered by Polish publishing houses is not, however, as modest as it might be expected judging by its little popularity.

Opis:
World literatures today often impose a separation of narratives from their geographic and linguistic origins. Translated versions of literary texts that were created and received within local cultural contexts, when translated, enter new, foreign contexts. When translations into many other languages appear, a writer may expect many diverse valuations of one`s work. Literary texts in translation, in fact, are an inseparable from literary experiences for many readers and the study of translated texts has a long-standing tradition. The future of such texts may also lie in the emerging future reading - “distant reading” to quote Walkowitz` use of Moretti`s term. Among the strongest arguments in support of such reading is the possibility, through translated texts, to establish a more aesthetic distance towards the object of a fictional text in translation. Translation gives us as readers a new and different approach towards objects we fail to notice because of their familiarity. Nature scenes and objects may be included among such features of the narrative that could be more aesthetically appreciated in the translated versions. The paper compares translations of nature scenes and objects of Shin Kyung-Sook`s novel into English Please Look After Mom (2011) and into Lithuanian Prašau, pasirūpink mama (2019). The paper reveals the scope of translation strategies of domestication and foreignization through comparison of translation of nature scenes and items into Lithuanian and English.

Najstarsze przekłady literatury polskiej pochodzą z XVII w. Na język karaimski przetłumaczono m.in. utwory Jana Kochanowskiego i Adama Mickiewicza. Odnaleziony ostatnio w zbiorach rękopisów Józefa Sulimowicza przekład Roty pozwala dodać do listy tłumaczonych pisarzy Marię Konopnicką. Tłumaczem był Leon Eszwowicz, nauczyciel religii w Haliczu. Jego przekład, choć nie odznaczający się walorami literackim, jest interesującym przykładem zainteresowania Karaimów literaturą polską.
The oldest known translations of Polish literature into the Karaim language date back to the 17th century. Among those poets whose works have been translated we find Jan Kochanowski and Adam Mickiewicz. Another Polish author that can be read in Karaim is Maria Konopnicka. A translation of her work Rota (The Oath) was recently discovered in the Józef Sulimowicz manuscript collection means. The translator was Leon Eszwowicz, who taught religion to Karaite children in Halicz. Although his translation is not of great or significant literary value, it remains an interesting example of the interest shown by Karaites in Polish literature.

Translators are a part of institutionalized translation literature together with organizations of translators, literary critics, publishing houses, and magazines. They played a very important role in The Polish People’s Republic. The Polish Communist Party treated them as nest of oppositionists. The first organization of translators, Association of Polish Translators and Interpreters, was established after years of failed attempts in 1981, not accidentally at the time of the biggest popularity of Solidarity. Translation literature was a part of cultural contacts with abroad which were a part of the foreign policy of the state. This particular sphere was under control of the state. Political ideology was the most important factor which influenced cultural policy. Despite those extratextual constraints translators and the sphere of cultural contacts with abroad had a little bit more freedom than other cultural institutions because the political authority wanted to create a positive picture of the country, especially for the foreign receiver. The position of the translator in The Polish People’s Republic was close to The Horace Model of translation. He had to negotiate between a patron (in our case state) and two languages and cultures.
