Greeting someone with a Hello!, or finishing a letter with Sincerely, Yours truly, seems very easy for a native speaker. These expressions, basic in ordinary life communication, entail a lot of constraints noticeable only when we must use them in a foreign language. Although seemingly simple in terms of content, form and context of ordinary life when they are employed, these utterances are very singular. They are ritually emitted in common situations to which they are prototypically associated.
Saluer quelqu’un par un Bonjour !, ou finir une lettre par Cordialement, Bien à vous, semble très facile pour un locuteur natif. Ces expressions qui sont basiques dans la communication de la vie courante entraînent beaucoup de contraintes dont on ne s’aperçoit que lorsqu’on doit les utiliser dans une langue étrangère. Ces énoncés qui ont l’air d’une grande simplicité du point de vue de leur contenu, de leur forme et des contextes de la vie ordinaire dans lesquels ils s’emploient sont très singuliers. The article analyses Brygida Helbig’s novel Niebko (2013) and its German translation (Kleine Himmel, 2019). The author of the paper discovers numerous inconsistencies in the two language versions. The adopted perspective is of an interdisciplinary nature, it combines linguistic and literary elements. The conclusions of the analysis contribute to reflections regarding the translation of intercultural literature, the phenomenon of self-translation, and the redefinition of the term “translation”.
Artykuł poświęcony jest analizie translatorycznej powieści Brygidy Helbig pt. Niebko (2013) oraz jej niemieckiego przekładu (Kleine Himmel, 2019). Porównanie obu wersji pozwala stwierdzić liczne rozbieżności. Przyjęta perspektywa translatologiczna ma charakter interdyscyplinarny, łączy elementy językoznawcze oraz literaturoznawcze. Wnioski z analizy stanowią przyczynek do refleksji na temat przekładu literatury interkulturowej, zjawiska autotranslacji oraz redefinicji pojęcia „przekład”.

This article discusses the strategies that may be used during the process of translation of a literary work. It will be shown that the translators’ choices are context driven. The starting point for an analysis are four theoretical approaches to translation strategies (Markovina 1993, Koller 2004, Gercken 1999 and Hejwowski 2006). The analysis of the translator’s choices will be carried out at the example of Andrzej Stasiuk’s novel “Jak zostałem pisarzem. Próba autobiografii intelektualnej” translated into German by Olaf Kühl.

Opis:
The present paper deals with culture-specific items as a translational problem. It is based on two Polish translations of four Swedish books from the famous detective series by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö.The aim of the study is to analyze some of the practices employed by two Polish translators against the translation methods proposed by Newmark (1988), Svane (2002) and Ingo (2009). For this purpose a number of highly specific cultural items have been collected and the methods applied by translators have been identified.The analysis has shown a big difference between translators in dealing with culture-specific items. The first translator, Maria Olszańska, adopts such translation methods as calque translation, hyperonym, functional equivalent, paraphrase and omission. The other translator, Halina Thylwe,  prefers transference and calque translation combined with additional explanations, either in the main part of the text or in footnotes. The methods employed by both translators are a result of choosing between global translation strategies domestication and foreignization (Venuti 1995). Domestication, adopted in the older translations, minimizes the strangeness of the Swedish text to the Polish readers, whereas foreignization in the newer translations retains the foreignness of the original.

In the text were presented numerous and in-depth relations of the Russian emigration poet, for years staying in Paris, with Poland. Attention was drawn to the translation work and to the translation of Polish prose texts, above all distinguishing Gorbaniewska’s translation achievements in relation to the poets and the Polish poetry itself. The poetess’ articles, reviews and statements bringing the Russian reader closer to the Polish culture, historical and political events as well as current facts were also discussed. Gorbaniewska’s original poems devoted to Polish political activists, filmmakers, editors and representatives of literature were described.

The article outlines the problem of difficulties resulting from cultural differences encountered by the Dutch translators of two Polish novels: Ferdudyrke and Początek. Culture is present in such texts produced in a certain literary system and socio-cultural context on nearly every level and it often poses serious translation problems. The author focuses on the choices made by Gerard Rasch and Willem A. Maijer, Herman van der Klei and Chris de Ruig in order to draw conclusions concerning the consequences these decisions have and to state whether the couleur locale of the novels has been preserved. The topic in question is thoroughly analysed from the perspective of the target text reader.

Especially after 1776, when the American democratic “experiment” giving rise to the United States proved durable, America became a source of social and political inspiration to generations of Europeans and non-Europeans alike. Unsurprisingly, also in the Italian context, the catalog of ways in which American values have been “translated into Italian” and adapted to Italy’s cultural space seems to be ever-growing. Yet, even though the cultural transfer dates back to Christopher Columbus, it is especially since the outbreak of World War II that Italy has been markedly influenced by intellectual and material values generated in the US. At some point, the fascination with the US soared to such a level that, incredibly as it may sound, one of the most iconic provinces of Italy would begin to imagine itself as the forty-ninth state of the US long before Alaska and Hawaii gained their present-day status: in Sicily, the American fascination seems never to abate.

Translation has become one of the most important aspects of contemporary culture in the globalised world: it is a condition for intercultural communication as well as a means of preservation of culturally specific elements. No longer can we ignore the impact is has on cultural praxis and the functioning of many disciplines of the humanities. As a methodological framework Translation Studies offers a set of analytic and interpretive tools for research into various “translation zones”, for a long time seen as marginal, but in fact the most active spaces in cultures. It is there that the mediation processes and cultural transfer happens. The paper looks at the ways in which Translation Studies defines its aims and methods and sketches possible uses they may be put into in the humanities. The Translational Turn in Culture Studies poses challenges both to TS and other disciplines of the humanities, at the same time offering promising, new research perspectives.

The present article deals with the indirect translation, which is conceived by many translation theoreticians as an inadvisable practice. The aim of the paper is to prove that the Polish rendering of the novel “Koelie” by the Dutch writer Madelon Székely-Lulofs is in fact an indirect translation. The case study draws on a triangulation method consisting of peritextual, epitextual and comparative analysis. The epitextual analysis enabled to advance a hypothesis, that the translator of the novel into Polish – Herminia Bukowska – might have rendered indirect either via the German or English version. On the basis of the comparative analysis of the source text with its renderings into German, English and Polish carried out with regard to the so-called third culture elements, was it possible to verify this hypothesis. The comparison revealed quite a few unambiguous similarities between the Polish and German rendering in the translators’ approach in relation to the mentioned translation units, which in turn differ from the source text.

Musical Lexis in Russian-Polish Lexicography: Present State and Users’ NeedsIn order to meet the expectations of receivers, who come across vocabulary from various areas in their everyday life, general bilingual dictionaries include lexis from many different fields. This article analyses one such group in Russian-Polish lexicography: musical lexis. The analysis offered here considers translation pairs extracted from two most comprehensive Russian-Polish dictionaries. The study categorises musical lexis into semantic classes and verifies the accuracy, semantic relevance and currency of provided equivalents. The aim was to establish whether general bilingual lexicography meets the needs of users looking for equivalents in this lexical area. Basing on selected material, the article also compares the structure of entries in each dictionary and considers cultural background of musical lexis in the context of Russian culture. To illustrate the issues in focus, the study comments on a number of examples and proposes some solutions to problematic cases.Leksyka muzyczna w rosyjsko-polskiej leksykografii. Stan obecny versus potrzeby użytkownikówDwujęzyczne słowniki ogólne obejmują leksykę z wielu dziedzin, wychodząc naprzeciw oczekiwaniom odbiorców, którzy w życiu codziennym stykają się ze zróżnicowanym tematycznie słownictwem. Jedną z takich dziedzin jest muzyka. Związana z nią leksyka zarejestrowana w rosyjsko-polskiej leksykografii jest obiektem naszych badań. Analiza opiera się na parach przekładowych wyekscerpowanych z dwóch najobszerniejszych słowników rosyjsko-polskich. W pracy dokonano podziału leksyki muzycznej na klasy semantyczne. Poddano weryfikacji trafność ekwiwalentów przekładowych, ich zgodność semantyczną oraz stopień aktualności terminów, zawarty w słownikach. Działania te miały na celu sprawdzenie, na ile dwujęzyczna leksykografia ogólna odpowiada potrzebom użytkowników w zakresie dostępności odpowiedników dla tego typu leksyki. Bazując na wybranym materiale, dokonano porównania budowy artykułu hasłowego w obu słownikach. Zwrócono uwagę na podłoże kulturowe leksyki muzycznej w kontekście kultury rosyjskiej. Ilustracją dla omawianych treści są liczne przykłady wraz z komentarzami oraz, niekiedy, propozycje rozwiązań kwestii problemowych.

Celem artykułu jest analiza strategii i technik zastosowanych w obrazowaniu elementów trzeciej kultury w dwóch anglojęzycznych przekładach Bohatera naszych czasów Michaiła Lermontowa, przygotowanych przez J.H. Wisdoma i M. Murraya (1916) oraz M. Parkera (1957). Trzecią kulturę reprezentuje Kaukaz oraz liczne odniesienia do jego przyrody i tradycji. Analiza porównawcza zgromadzonego materiału została sporządzona na podstawie typologii elementów kulturowych Petera Newmarka, która objęła ekologię, kulturę materialną, gesty i zwyczaje. Obok procedur translatorskich, takich jak forenizacja i domestykacja, najczęściej stosowaną metodą jest substytucja prowadząca do zubożenia informacji kulturowej i braku spójności obrazowej między tekstem kanonicznym i jego przekładami.
The main aim of the article is to extract and to compare the strategies and techniques applied in rendition of the Caucasian realia in both English versions of A Hero of Our Time by Mikhail Lermontov. In choosing the target texts two factors were taken into consideration. Firstly, it was linguistic and cultural distance dividing Russian and English texts. Secondly, the time disparity between translations that affects language norms and conventions was considered. The theoretical framework for the analysis is Peter Newmark’s typology of culture-bound items, such as: ecology, culture and social life, customs and gestures. The comparative analysis reveals that the most frequent translation procedures is a substitution. It not only destroys the local colour, but also creates a false image of The Caucasus.

The Bond between Language and Culture in the Light of Lexicography. The Role of the Stronger Bond with Culture in Bilingual Dictionaries for Translators. Bilingual dictionaries are used for various reasons. One of the reasons is to find out what the particular word means using its equivalent in the target language. What is of great importance here, is that sometimes the meaning itself – expressed lexicographically – provides not enough information that is necessary to fully understand the particular word. Although it appears that the isolated meaning of the word is clear and understandable, its constitutional and contextual meaning in specific linguistic environment becomes unclear, confusing or misunderstood. This can be observed especially when the word and its meaning are unique and characteristic for the particular culture. This article focuses on the use of the language which is specific for the given cultural group. The phenomena of both the bond existing between culture and language as well as the use of the language within the culture are expounded upon and explored on the example of the words welcome and goodnight. The article investigates whether and to what extend bilingual dictionaries include in their microstructure the information concerning the cultural aspects of the use of the linguistic entity. The short characteristic of bilingual dictionaries and the assessment of the culture-specific phenomena serve as the theoretical background for the subject under investigation.

The author of the article writes about an unconventional reading of a small, amateurish Silesian-Chinese Dictionary by Marek Jachymski. By analysing the vocabulary, structure and the reliability of the translations the author of the article is lead to asking some important questions concerning prioritization and the political aspects of languages, mechanisms of word selection, the image of language, the world expressed by the selection of vocabulary and the specific character of a dictionary as a tool used in the process of translation and intercultural communication. The author pays close attention to the linguistic and cultural adequacy of some chosen word pairs. She highlights the need to consider such matters as schematic thinking about languages, the translating of cultures and the translator’s neutrality. By suggesting some excercises, the author also shows how this dictionary can be used in didactics that aim at developing students’ cultural and linguistic awareness, in terms of language and translation.

Cultural exchanges between Iran and France started over three centuries ago. In spite of the strong relationship between the two countries, some books such as Les Fleurs du mal (Flowers of Evil) went unnoticed in Iranian society. In addition to the literary value of the book, we propose to study ekphrasis in Baudelaire’s poems and its translation into Persian. Its meaning being that of a general description an artwork (imaginary or real), the term ekphrasis belongs to an interdisciplinary field of literature and art where the textual challenges we face may vary from one to another. To narrow down our study, we will focus on four chosen poems that have a minimum of two published translations in Persian, thus allowing the opportunity for a comparative study. These chosen poems, “La Beauté”, “L’Invitation au voyage”, “Les Plaintes d’un Icare” and “Femmes damnées” (“Delphine et Hippolyte”) as well as our corpus translation in Persian, are being studied and analysed through Descriptive Translation Studies. The analysis focuses on the ekphrastic aspect of these poems, their translations into Persian through syntactic and semantic levels and the influence of culture and society on the translation.

Each culture is unique and has its own unique objects or phenomena related to its history, traditions, and cultural identity. These specific objects, otherwise called culture-bound elements, may be strange and unrecognizable to another culture. Translators are often challenged to translate the text of one culture to another and to convey the names of cultural elements, while still preserving their unique meaning, as well as their national and cultural colour. The aim of the article is to analyse the strategies and techniques by means of which the names of Lithuanian culture-bound elements are translated into English in a work devoted to public affairs. To what extent the original is preserved in the foreign-language environment clarifies the (dis)harmony. In short, the name of a culture-bound element is an integral part of such work that otherwise would not accomplish its purpose.
