In the following article, the results of our study about the translation of acronyms via Arte TV news will be presented. First, we will submit the definition of acronyms, then discuss the matter of difficulties which may appear when translating acronyms from one language into another. Finally, we will introduce the different translation procedures used by translators when they are confronted with different kinds of acronyms (names of political parties, names of associations) which we understand as terms related to sociocultural aspects. Some samples from Arte TV news will be provided as a support for this article.

Opis:
Piotr Kupryś was the first Polish translator to fully translate two classical works fundamental for Ukrainian literature. These were: Kobzar by Taras Shevchenko and Eneida by Ivan Kotliarevsky. Kotliarevsky’s Eneida is a vivid example of adapting diverse elements of oral folklore culture in modern Ukrainian literature. The article analyses types of translation procedures the translator applied when dealing with cultural context. Generally speaking, Kupryś followed two strategies of rendering cultural elements: domestication – in order to adapt the target text to target readers’ knowledge; as well as foreignisation with explanation – thanks to which he enriched target readers’ knowledge about reality and culture of the source text.

Folklore phraseology was a inexhaustible source of linguistic measures for Ivan Kotliarevsky, as it allowed him to build humorous and satirical effects through introducing into his literary works colloquial, dialectal and jocular set phrases. The aim of this paper is to undertake comparative analysis of set phrases in the original and in the Polish translation of Eneyida in order to point out similarities and differences in these two languages. The author focuses on the translation strategies implemented to translate set phrases, and analysing particular non-phraseme word connections which very often replace set phrases in the target text.

The article aims to investigate the most accurate way to translate Latin phrase privilegium odiosum into Polish. The most popular translation « przywilej niekorzystny » can be regarded as awkward. On the grounds of legal and literary Roman sources the etymology of word privilegium was taken into consideration and the meaning of this word can be defined as a rule granted to an individual or to a restricted group, not always profitable for them. The Author takes into consideration the meaning of phrase in question in old and contemporary sources and literature of canon law, examples of such privileges were also given. In the last part of the article the Author points out how important is to determine the proper meaning of Latin phrases for the most proper translation, and suggests such translation of phrase privilegium odiosum into Polish.
L’auteur propose une réflexion sur la traduction la plus pertinente de l’expression privilegium odiosum vers le polonais. La traduction « przywilej niekorzystny », souvent rencontrée, peut paraître en effet maladroite. En se fondant sur les sources romaines, juridiques et littéraires, elle a examiné l’étymologie du mot privilegium et son sens comme norme pas toujours avantageuse, adressée à des destinataires concrets. Vient ensuite l’analyse du sens de l’expression en question dans les sources anciennes et contemporaines ainsi que dans la littérature du droit canon, illustrée par des exemples de cette sorte de privilèges. Dans la dernière partie de l’article, l’auteur souligne l’influence du sens exact des expressions latines sur la pertinence de la traduction et propose des traductions de l’expression privilegium odiosum en polonais.

Opracowanie zostało poświęcone zagadnieniu przekładu greckiego słowa πύλη w wersecie Mt 16,18. W pierwszej części artykułu przedstawiono i poddano ocenie krytycznej dwie polskojęzyczne tradycje translatorskie tego wyrazu w danym fragmencie: tradycję przekładu wyrazowego („brama”, „brona”, „wrota”) i tradycję przekładu metaforycznego („moc”, „oddział”, „potęga”). Następnie w drugiej części na postawie przytoczonych argumentów o charakterze lingwistyczno-egzegetycznym zaproponowano oddanie terminu πύλη za pomocą pojęcia „gardziel”, które lepiej pasuje do najbliższego kontekstu literackiego perykopy Mt 16,18 oraz do całokształtu biblijnego ujęcia sił przeciwstawnych Bogu
This essay has been devoted to the question of translation of the Greek word πύλη from the verse of Matthew 16,18. The first part of the article presents and critically evaluates the two Polish traditions of translation of this word in that passage: the tradition of verbal translation (gate, harrow, gates) and the tradition of metaphorical translation (power, troops, might). The second part of the study on the basis of the linguistic and exegetical arguments proposes to read the word πύλη as the throat, because it is better suited for the literary context of the episode of Matthew 16,18 and to the biblical theology as a whole.

There is no doubt that Translation Studies have firmly established themselves as an independent scientific field. However, there are thematic overlaps in some areas concerning other disciplines. This work investigates the relations between interlinguistic translation and intersemiotic translation from the point of view of translation studies. First of all, a set of criteria for the identification of proper translation is offered and, in a second step, we examine how theoretical elements like communicative equivalence and communicative value can be transferred to a linguistic discourse by means of the intersemiotic translation modality known as audio description (AD)

Članek obravnava esej Draga Jančarja Adam Michnik ali premišljevanje o Poljski (1997), ki ga je v poljščino prevedla Joanna Pomorska (2001), dve desetletji pozneje pa še Nikodem Szczygłowski. Avtor članka ugotavlja, da se branje eseja Jančarja spre minja glede na spreminjajoče se politične razmere. Devetdeseta leta in začetek 21. stoletja so bili naklonjeni političnemu optimizmu, Adam Michik pa je veljal kot junak dobe, ki je bila končno zaključena. Branje eseja z današnjega vidika nam omogoča ustrezno ovrednotiti politično vizijo Michnika; je tudi opozorilo pred lahkim optimizmom in naivno vero, da je mogoče dokončno premagati nevarnosti, ki so bile odgovorne za tragedijo 20. stoletja.
This article discusses Drago Jančar’s 1997 essay, Adam Michnik ali premišljevanje o Poljski (Adam Michnik; Or, Reflections on Poland). The essay was translated into Polish first by Joanna Pomorska (2001) and then, about two decades later, by Nikodem Szczygłowski. The aim of the article is to interpret Jančar’s essay in light of ongoing changes to the political situation in Europe and to evaluate to what extent the political context influences the interpretation of the work in question.

In the wake of the growing recognition of Kurt Vonnegut's prose in Poland, the publishers decided to also make his essays available to the Polish audience. Sometimes the Polish versions were translated much later than the originals, but sometimes the Polish texts directly followed the publication of the American source texts. In his essays, Vonnegut repeatedly refers to numerous aspects of the American realia: history, literature and popular culture. The references are both direct and indirect. Vonnegut's essays are an example of a text where the role of a translator as a cultural mediator is paramount. Unfortunately, not all translators have succeeded in the task. The translated texts contain evident translation flaws caused by the translator's being unfamiliar with the cultural context of the original. The paper analyses these mistakes and presents examples of how translators descriptively handled certain cultural references. This strategy helped them save the comprehensibility of the text at the cost of its unintended simplification.

Autor článku se zabývá recepcí beletristického i dramatického díla Karola Wojtyły (papeže Jana Pavla II.) v České republice, zejména překlady jeho literárního díla do češtiny. Zejména v souvislosti s návštěvou papeže Jana Pavla II. v Československu a v České republice byly přeloženy a vydány výbory z tvorby Karola Wojtyły. Tyto překlady autor charakterizuje a zařazuje do žánrového kontextu. V závěru článku autor poukazuje na to, značná část literární tvorby Karola Wojtyły, papeže Jana Pavla II., dosud do češtiny přeložena nebyla. Českého čtenáře tak čeká ještě nejedna příležitost k hlubšímu poznání výjimečné osobnosti papeže Jana Pavla II.
Autor artykułu zajmuje recepcją beletrystyki i dramatów Karola Wojtyły (papieża Jana Pawła II) w Republice Czeskiej, w szczególności przekładami jego dzieła literackiego na czeski. Zwłaszcza w związku z wizytą papieża Jana Pawła II w Czechosłowacji i w Republice Czeskiej przełożno i wydano wybory twórczości Karola Wojtyły. Te przekłady autor charakteryzuje i umieszcza w kontekście gatunku. W konkluzji artykułu autor wskazuje na to, że znaczna część literackiej twórczości Karola Wojtyły, papieża Jana Pawła II, dotąd nie została przełożona na czeski. Czeskiego czytelnika więc czeka jeszcze niejedna sposobność do głębszego poznania wyjątkowej osobowości papieża Jana Pawła II.
The author deals with the reception of fictional and dramatic works by Karol Wojtyla (Pope John Paul II.) in the Czech Republic, in particular with translations of his literary work into Czech. In connection with the visit of Pope John Paul II in Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic selections from Karol Wojtyla’s works were translated and subsequently published.. In the present article these translations are described and placed in the genre context. In conclusion the author points out that many of the literary works of Karol Wojtyla, Pope John Paul II., have not yet been translated into Czech. So there will be still many opportunities for Czech readers to get a better knowledge and understanding of the exceptional mind and character of Pope John Paul II.

Artykuł dotyczy problemów przekładu terminologii z zakresu prawa upadłościowego i naprawczego z języka polskiego na angielski. Autorka uwzględnia problem intertekstualności w przekładzie prawniczym tekstów dotyczących prawa upadłościowego. W pierwszej części zostanie przedstawiony korpus badawczy. W drugiej części, na podstawie analizy tekstów paralelnych, autorka omówi termin zarządca, którego ekwiwalenty angielskojęzyczne są uzależnione od kontekstu wynikającego z prób tworzenia jednolitych reguł oraz zapewniania normatywnych ram współpracy (przez organizacje międzynarodowe, takie jak Unia Europejska, INSOL, NATO) w transgranicznych sprawach upadłościowych w celu ułatwienia obrotu międzynarodowego. Na koniec zostanie przedstawiona wielość ekwiwalentów dla terminu zarządca w tekstach dotyczących prawa upadłościowego formułowanego w języku angielskim.
The paper touches upon selected problems connected with translation of insolvency law terminology from Polish into English. The term zarządca has been used to illustrate its vertical and horizontal intertextuality in Polish and English language. The corpus composed of nortmative texts (Polish Act on Insolvency and Rehabilitation, British Insolvency Act, European Union Repulation on Insolvency Proceedings) and soft-law (INSOL guidelines, NATO regulations, etc.) has been compared to show how the context modifies the meaning of the term and requires applying different equivalents depending on the context acquired meaning. The author also presents dictionary equivalents which may be found in Polish-English legal dictionaries to illustrate the quandaries awaitingthe translator who is to render a translation of a text dealing with insolvency law.

The present article attempts to take note of some existing problems with the legal texts translation. The legal texts translation has to take into consideration the fact, that the text is experienced in two ways - translated text is the subject to further interpretation. A translator translating the legal text from Russian into Polish faces difficulties with choosing the proper lexems. Russian-Polish translating dictionaries do not always present all the meanings of the given lexems and first and foremost they do not always consider language of the law. A translator himself has to use in a translation a inner sentence context, which exceeds the context of a word which is completive to a phrase, as well as a translator has to use a surround sentence context and in comprehensiveness a legal language context which often allows to reduce the meaning of translated lexeme in relation to semantic field, resulting from the context of a word which is completive to a phrase.

Das Ziel dieses Beitrags ist die Analyse der Realienbezeichnungen, die in den deutschen Reisekatalogen enthalten sind. Als Grundlage der Untersuchung dienen die deutschen Reisekataloge ,,Chamäleon“ und „Gebeco“. Im Rahmen der Analyse werden Beispiele der Realienbezeichnungen aus den oben genannten Katalogen ausgewählt, dem entsprechenden Typ der Realienbezeichnung zugeordnet und anschließend besprochen. Der Schwerpunkt dieses Beitrags liegt ebenfalls auf den möglichen Wiedergabeverfahren der ausgewählten Realienbezeichnungen, die bei ihrer Übersetzung ins Polnische Translationsprobleme bereiten. Der Beitrag wird mit Schlussfolgerungen abgeschlossen, in denen darauf hingewiesen wird, wie wichtig für die korrekte Wiedergabe der Realienbezeichnungen das Verständnis des kulturellen Hintergrunds sowohl für die Ausgangs- als auch für die Zielsprache ist. In den Urlaubsangeboten, die in den Reisekatalogen enthalten sind, kommen landes- und kulturspezifische Bezeichnungen zu Orten in der ganzen Welt vor, die den Reiselustigen in großer Zahl zur Verfügung stehen. Man kann also feststellen, dass verschiedene Länder und Kulturen ständig neue kulturspezifische Wörter bzw. Ausdrücke mit sich bringen. Darum ist beim Lesen von Urlaubsangeboten ein bestimmtes Weltwissen erforderlich. Obwohl die Reiseinteressierten keine genauen Bedeutungen der kulturspezifischen Wörter kennen müssen, sollten sie eine allgemeine Vorstellung von den landestypischen fremden Begriffen haben. Darüber hinaus sind zumindest die Grundkenntnisse der englischen Sprache erforderlich, da in Reisekatalogen viele Anglizismen auftreten. Die Urlaubsangebote enthalten aber auch kurze englische Slogans, die meistens weder ins Deutsche noch in eine andere Sprache übersetzt werden. Manche Wörter, die weithin bekannt sind, wie z. B. pizza oder safari, bedürfen keiner Übersetzung oder zusätzlicher Explikation. Es gibt jedoch einige Ausdrücke, die von den meisten Lesern nicht verstanden werden, weil sie weniger gebräuchlich sind oder sehr spezifische, komplexe Bedeutungen verbergen. Daher werden in diesem Beitrag für solche Realien die bestmöglichen Übersetzungslösungen ins Polnische vorgeschlagen.
The aim of this paper is to analyse culture-bound units that appear in German travel catalogues. The following German travel catalogues constitute the research material: “Chamäleon” and “Gebeco”. Selected examples of the culture-specific expressions from the above-mentioned catalogues are subjected to the analysis, assigned to the corresponding type and subsequently discussed. The paper focuses also on the methods of rendering techniques of the selected culture-bound units, which encounter translations problems while being translated into Polish. The paper’s conclusions point out the importance of cultural background understanding for both the source and the target language, in order to accurately render the culture-specific items. Country- and culture-specific foreign terms appearing in the travel offers refer to the places all over the world and are available in great numbers for people interested in excursions. It can thus be noticed that different countries and cultures constantly bring with them new culture-specific words or expressions. Hence, a certain world knowledge is required while reading holiday offers. Even though readers interested in travels do not need to know the exact meanings of the culture-specific expressions, they should have a general idea of country-specific foreign terms. Besides, at least a basic knowledge of the English language is indispensable, because the travel catalogues contain a plethora of Anglicisms. Tourist offers also contain short slogans in English, which are usually translated neither into German nor into the other language. Some words that are commonly used, such as pizza or safari, do not require translation or additional explication. However, there are some expressions that are not comprehensible for most of the readers because of the fact that they are less common or conceal very specific, complex meanings. Therefore, this paper aims to present the best potential translation solutions for such culture-specific expressions into Polish.

Historia pewnego mordercy by Małgorzata Łukasiewicz. The article discusses semantic, lexical and syntactical problems, influence of the context on the translation and the results of the analysis.

Opis:
The aim of this contribution is to identify the semantic characteristics of Kummer (‘grief ’) and its possible translation equivalents in French in order to determine the similarities and differences between these lexemes and provide a decision-making aid for choosing the most appropriate equivalent in a given context in the translation process. The lexemes are analysed by means of context analysis, which involves sorting their respective cooccurrences into semantic categories and subcategories. The results of this categorisation can provide insights into the semantic traits of the lexemes analysed.

The subject of the paper is linguistic humour examined from the point of view of its functioning in intralinguistic literary communication (monolingual) as well as from a much broader point of view which comprises the problem of crosslinguistic and crosscultural transfer of facetious elements. The analysis has as its subject different forms of verbal humour which can be observed in linguistic communication that is understood as any manifestation of linguistic activity. Having assumed such a broad perspective of communication allowed to analyse humour from the point of view of its functioning, not only within one cultural-linguistic community, but also to analyse this phenomenon in the crosslinguistic and crosscultural context.
