The aim of the article is to present initial results of an experiment studying the impact of Radegundis Stolze’s didactic hermeneutical model on the acquisition of subjects’ translation competence. In the first part of the paper the state of the art of the process of translation competence acquisition as well as Radegundis Stolze’s hermeneutical model are presented. The following parts of the article are concerned with research methodology and experimental procedure. The final part contains conclusions stemming from the research, as well as some suggestions as to how the study of translation competence acquisition can be continued and what its implications are.

In order to be a part of an explanatory theory of translation, translation competence should be taken as the specific competence a translator needs beyond general types of competence, such as the knowledge of the source language and the target language. In literary translation, the translator is an expert reader of the source text, whereas in scientific translation it is unrealistic and not necessary to expect this. This imposes different requirements on translation competence.

The paper addresses the existing models of translation competence that are relevant for didactics of legal translation. Translation competence is generally perceived as a theoretical construct embracing such areas as knowledge, skills and aptitudes that are vital for the performance of translation tasks. The paper shall start from concise presentation of most didactically relevant – in the author’s view – approaches to translation competence. This shall be followed by attempts aimed at the incorporation and integration of findings of competence research presented as well as practical solutions into the teaching and learning process with a view to legal translation competence.
W artykule omówiono istniejące modele kompetencji tłumaczeniowej istotne z punktu widzenia dydaktyki przekładu prawniczego. Kompetencja tłumaczeniowa postrzegana jest jako konstrukt teoretyczny obejmujący takie obszary jak wiedza, zdolności i umiejętności, które są niezbędne do wykonywania zadań tłumaczeniowych. W pierwszej części artykułu zaprezentowane zostaną najbardziej relewantne z perspektywy dydaktycznej – w ocenie autorki – podejścia do kompetencji tłumaczeniowej, które poprzedzają – w części drugiej artykułu – próbę włączenia i integracji wyników przedstawionych badań w obszarze kompetencji tłumaczeniowej oraz rozwiązań praktycznych w procesie dydaktycznym ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem kompetencji tłumaczeniowej w tłumaczeniu tekstów prawniczych.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest opis kompetencji interkulturowej jako kompetencji bazowej w dydaktyce przekładu na poziomie uniwersyteckim. Kompetencja interkulturowa składa się na ogólną kompetencję tłumaczeniową. Jest definiowana jako zespół wiedzy, umiejętności i nawyków w komunikacji w zakresie przynajmniej dwóch kultur, świadomie wykorzystywanych przez tłumacza w różnych środowiskach pracy. Kompetencja interkulturowa poprzez taką propozycję nominacyjną podkreśla relacyjny charakter kultur uczestniczących w komunikacji za pośrednictwem przekładu (kultury oryginału, kultury przekładu oraz często kultury trzeciej). W artykule podjęta została próba opisu sposobów nabywania takiej kompetencji poprzez analizę konkretnych przypadków problemów przekładowych w procesie tłumaczenia w warunkach dydaktyki akademickiej.
The purpose of this paper is to provide a description of intercultural competence as basic competence in translation teaching at a university level. Intercultural competence is part of general translation competence. It is defined as a combination of knowledge, skills and habits in communication with regard to at least two cultures, consciously used by the translator in different work environments. Intercultural competence through such a definition proposal emphasizes a relational character of cultures participating in communication via translation (the culture of the original, the culture of the translation and frequently the third culture). The paper aims to describe ways of acquiring this competence through the analysis of concrete examples of translation problems in the course of translation in translation teaching.

The following article describes a project that relates to the developing of translation competence between German and Polish languages. The project was conducted at the University of Gdańsk among students of Applied Linguistics with the translation specialization. The used method was academic tutoring as a personalized way of recognizing student’s potential and needs in the field of translation and the most efficient opportunity to correct student’s translated texts. The second aim of the project was to investigate the role of tandem work and this impact of the translation competence developing process.

In the last decade, cosmetic translation has become increasingly significant as the beauty and cosmetic industry has grown exponentially across the globe. The expansion of international cosmetic brands in many countries around the world necessitates commissioning competent, well-prepared translators, who are able to handle translation problems typical of various types of cosmetic translation, both specialized and those requiring skills specific to a more creative rendition. The main objective of this paper is to discuss a novel theoretical model of cosmetic translation competence, a type of translation which has so far not gained much popularity among translation scholars. The first part of this article offers a concise state of the art of the concept translation competence. Capitalizing on models of translation competence developed by PACTE (Process in the Acquisition of Translation Competence and Evaluation), TransComp and EMT (European Master’s in Translation), an original model of cosmetic translation competence is presented along with its sub-competencies. The second part of this article focuses on implications for teaching cosmetic translation. The paper concludes with general remarks pertaining to avenues for future research into cosmetic translation competence and its acquisition.
Wraz z postępującym na całym świecie rozwojem branży beauty na znaczeniu zyskują w ostatnim dziesięcioleciu tłumaczenia kosmetyczne. Zjawisko to przyczynia się do zwiększonego zapotrzebowania na kompetentnych tłumaczy mających odpowiednie umiejętności oraz wiedzę w rozwiązywaniu problemów, które są charakterystyczne dla przekładu tekstów z zakresu kosmetyki i kosmetologii – mowa zarówno o tłumaczeniach specjalistycznych z tego obszaru, jak i o tych, które wymagają od tłumacza bardziej kreatywnego podejścia. Głównym celem pracy jest przedstawienie i omówienie oryginalnego modelu teoretycznego kompetencji tłumaczeniowej w przekładzie tekstów kosmetycznych – tym rodzaju tłumaczeniu, który nie cieszy się większym zainteresowaniem przekładoznawców. Pierwsza część artykułu przedstawia w zwięzły sposób stan badań nad koncepcją kompetencji tłumaczeniowej (ang. translation competence). Następnie analizie poddany jest innowacyjny, będący tematem niniejszej pracy, model teoretyczny, wzbogacony o listę wchodzących w jego skład subkompetencji. Model ten bazuje na dobrze znanych w przekładoznawstwie projektach grup badawczych PACTE i TransComp oraz na programie dydaktycznym EMT. Druga część artykułu przedstawia implikacje omówionego modelu teoretycznego dla translodydaktyki w przekładzie tekstów kosmetycznych. Artykuł wieńczą ogólne uwagi dotyczące możliwości prowadzenia dalszych badań w zakresie kompetencji tłumaczeniowej w przekładzie kosmetycznym oraz procesu jej nabywania.

Pierwszorzędnym celem niniejszego artykułu jest usystematyzowanie wiedzy na temat kompetencji tłumacza. Jednak szczególnym zainteresowaniem cieszyć się będzie owa kompetencja w odniesieniu do tłumaczenia tekstów specjalistycznych. Rozważania dotyczyć będą tego czy lepszym jest wykwalifikowany tłumacz, który podejmuje się przekładu tekstu specjalistycznego czy może ekspert, który tłumaczy tekst z zakresu swojej dziedziny. Wypunktowane zostaną cechy właściwe dla tłumacza tekstu specjalistycznego. Wykorzystana zostanie tutaj m.in. klasyfikacja Marchwińskiego [2007]. Przedstawione zostaną również wyniki ankiety dla tłumaczy dotyczącej kompetencji tłumacza oraz dokonana zostanie analiza materiału badawczego pochodzącego z broszur turystycznych.
The primary objective of this article is to systematize the knowledge on about the translator competence. Special attention will be given to this competence in relation to the translation of specialist texts. The considerations will pertain to whether a qualified translator that does translation of a specialist text is better than an expert who translates the text in his or her field. In order to achieve those research aims, an attempt will be made to present the features specific the translator of the specialist text. Among others the classification by Marchwiński [2007] will be used here. The results of the survey regarding the translation competence will be also discussed as well as the analysis of the gathered material obtained from tourist brochures.

With the superdiversity (Blommaert 2010, 2013) of today’s societies translator training faces new challenges. This article sets out to explore the issue of intercultural competence in translator training from the perspective of the views and beliefs of English language majors in Poland. Rather than discussing the translation programmes offered to students, the study presented here concentrates on preconceptions as to who a translator is, what skills, knowledge and competences are crucial for a translator and what difficulties s/he may face. Students’ beliefs prove that they are ready for courses which will encourage them to reflect on their views and will help them deepen their understanding of culture to include intercultural aspects as well as aspects of their own culture. As Polish students wanting to be translators may simply not be aware of the intercultural challenges entailed by the profession, it is argued here that overt, explicit focus on intercultural communication and raising students’ intercultural competence is needed.
Określenie kompetencji tłumacza dla potrzeb kształcenia stanowi ogromne wyzwanie wobec zmieniającej się rzeczywistości, w której przyjdzie pracować absolwentom studiów językowych. Jednym z kluczowych elementów, których brak może podważyć użyteczność oferowanych kursów jest kompetencja interkulturowa. Omówiwszy modele kompetencji tłumaczeniowej oraz rolę kompetencji interkulturowej jako elementu kompetencji tłumacza, artykuł przedstawia wyniki badania przeprowadzonego wśród 60 studentów I i II roku, z których większość deklaruje gotowość podjęcia kursów i pracy tłumacza w przyszłości. Badaniu poddano przekonania dotyczące tego, kim jest tłumacz, jakie umiejętności, wiedzę i kompetencje powinien posiadać i jakie trudności może napotkać w swojej pracy. Wyniki pokazują, że studenci potrzebują kursów, które zachęcą ich do refleksji na temat ich poglądów i pomogą im pogłębić zrozumienie kultury o aspekt interkulturowości oraz ich własną kulturę. Ponieważ polscy studenci pragnący zostać tłumaczami mogą nie być świadomi międzykulturowych wyzwań związanych z tym zawodem, istnieje potrzeba rozwinięcia ich kompetencji interkulturowej poprzez wyraźne zaznaczenie wagi tej kompetencji w ich kształceniu.

This article explores the problems which occur when teaching the translation of functional texts into a foreign language (from Polish into German). The article especially focuses on lexicalterminological and pragmatic translation mistakes, their causes, and strategies for avoiding them. One of the biggest challenges when translating into a foreign language is to use correct and adequate equivalents. The authors argue that the competences needed for this task should be taught as early as possible during translation training. The authors have therefore analysed texts translated by BA translation students and have chosen examples which represent the most frequent categories of mistakes, e.g. word-to-word translation, breaching the target language‘s conventions, and (inter)cultural problems. The solutions proposed are based on functional translation theory and translation criticism, and also take into account the classifications of mistakes used in translation didactics.

Slovenská prekladová literatúra disponuje reprezentatívnym výberom z tvorby chorvátskych autorov literatúry pre deti a mládež počnúc od konca 19. storočia až po súčasnosť (I. Brlićová Mažuranićová, V. Nazor, M. Lovrak, I. Kušan, Lj. Bauer, J. Horvat, H. Hitrec, Đ. Zrakić, J. Cvenić, S. Tomaš, A. Gardaš, Z. Balog). Slovenské preklady diel uvedených autorov sa uverejňovali na Slovensku, ale aj vo Vojvodine, v Srbsku. K najvýznamnejším slovenským prekladateľom, ktorí sa venovali a venujú popri literatúre pre dospelého recipienta aj dielam určeným pre detského čitateľa, patria Zlatko Klátik, Juraj Tušiak, Andrej Vrbacký, Rudo Brtáň, Peter Čačko, Michal Nadubinský, Ján Jankovič a iní. Prekladatelia sa nechávali ovplyvňovať pri výbere chorvátskych autorov pre svoj preklad jednak domácou recepciou autora, ale aj vlastným záujmom o túto literatúru.
Croatian literature translated into Slovak consists of a relevant selection of Croat authors for kids and youth dating from the 19th century to the present, such as I. Brlićová ‑Mažuranićová, V. Nazor, M. Lovrak, I. Kušan, Lj. Bauer, J. Horvat, H. Hitrec, Đ. Zrakić, J. Cvenić, S. Tomaš, A. Gardaš, Z. Balog. Slovak translations are published in Slovakia, but also in the Serbian Vojvo‑ dina. The most significant translators focusing on the translation of juvenile literature are Zlatko Klátik, Juraj Tušiak, Andrej Vrbacký, Rudo Brtáň, Peter Čačko, Michal Nadubinský, Ján Jankovič and others. Translators were influenced in their selection of Croatian authors by their reputation but also by the translators‘ personal interest in the literature.

The professional world calls for well-trained translators capable of mediating between professional cultures. Thefunctional social constructivist approach with its authentic or simulated teaching has been recently followed eagerly within academia for bridging the gap between formal education and the market [Vienne, 1994; Risku, 2002; Kiraly 2000, 2005, Biel 2011, Garant 2013]. Nonetheless, not enough attention, has been paid to translation teaching in the light of the social theory of learning with its meaning, practice, community and identity [Wenger 1998a]. After Bhatia, we ask: to what extent should pedagogical practices reflect or account for the realities of the world of discourse? [Bhatia 2004, p. 232; 2016]. The situated learning of the context-dependent approach, under which learners are exposed to real-life work environments both inside (highly simulated) and outside the classroom [Gonzalez 2016], enables prospectivetranslators to climb the ladder of professional translation competence (TC). Learning becomes an issue of participationin professional socio-embedded discourse. We present the case of LSP translation teaching to undergraduate English Philology students under two modes: firstly, simulation of authentic translation agency jobs; secondly, authentic external apprenticeship among CoP members. Acting as peripheral participants (PP) of the translation Community of Practice, the novices not only acquire more linguistic skills but also the know-how typical for the translators-practitioners community. The empirical study illustrates how the peripheral position of the trainee, through “learning as transformation” [Mezirow, 1991], is being modelled by the student themselves (participation and self-reflection), the teacher- facilitator, and the members of the authentic Communities of Practice (CoP). The aforementioned evolution is seen from the perspective of a questionnaire done among the trainees. The findings are gathered and discussed.
