The article partially sums up the results of a translating project realized by a students’ science club. The aim of the project was to translate into German an interview with the caretaker of the synagogue in Łańcut. The interview deals with the history of the building and the history of the former Jewish community in Łańcut. Particularly problematic in the translation process were terms originating from Yiddish or Hebrew: realia, cultural artefacts, religious terms and some other exoticisms. Another barrier was connected with the ability to approach the text from the receiver’s perspective. The article discusses those and other difficulties involved in the process of translation and some possible ways of solving them.

The two experiments described in this article are focused on semantic priming in the context of lexical ambiguity and hierarchic model of mental lexicon. For both experiments, the verification method was a decision taken in the process of translating a sentence from Polish (L1) to English (L2). The decision was a result of solving dilemma of interpretation of the particular sentence that included homonym. The sentences used in the experiments were prepared in a manner that allowed them to be interpreted in at least two ways – each way being a direct result of interpretation of a ambiguous word meaning included in a sentence. In this study the secondary meanings of the homonyms were primed. In the first experiment the primes were presented in L2 – therefore this part of the study was concentrated on interlingual aspect of semantic priming. The second experiment was focused on intralingual aspect of semantic priming and the primes were presented in L1. The results of both experiments have shown the effect of semantic priming of ambiguous words’ meanings when translating from one language to another. Participants used significantly more often (when translating sentences from Polish to English) those English words the meaning of which was primed in the experimental groups during the first phase of the conducted experiments. We discuss the results in the context of the hierarchic model of mental lexicon in the case of bilingualism and we suggest possible paths for future research.

Cultural, educational and professional frameworks recognised by our civilization have been formulated as texts. Translation is the only method allowing for their global dissemination. Religions, literatures, learning theories and organizational cultures are products of translation. Yet, the relevance of translation is not only a matter of the past. It is argued in this article that translation is relevant today. In its educational aspect, translation can help realize that language differences are a resource in text comprehension and meaning making. Professional benefits of translating include language fluency that is more than a technical skill: it enables recognising nuances of meaning and sense, allowing for realistic language use. It can be a core advantage for specialists in creative industry, for industry analysts and for lots of other professionals engaging in cross-cultural interactions. Finally, being a translator one has a transversal competence of service provision.

The questions of a translation unit, its dimensions and natural features have absorbed the traductologists since the origins of translatology. According to this, the primary purpose of this paper is to establish the range of the most important defining propositions and further to consider the issue, whether a translation unit should be in fact understood as a word, a phrase, a sentence, a text, culture or a variable entity. The approach will put forward the claim that it is necessary to differentiate between the unit of translation and the unit of translating, and that the appropriate text type particularly determines the dimensions of the unit of translating.

The present paper focuses on the issue of translating operatic libretti in the form of surtitles. This is a very specific type of translation, and it becomes even more challenging when operatic productions for which surtitles are created are modernised. In such cases the application of skopos theory proves to be the most useful and eff ective, even though some of its premises may be regarded as controversial. The data for the present study come from the most reputable opera houses, for example the Metropolitan Opera House or Royal Opera House, as they are known for providing their audiences with high-quality libretti translations.

The paper presents an analysis of the role of the lyrics in the film Miś by Stanisław Bareja as well as an answer to the question why and how they should be subtitled into English. It also discusses a number of translation problems and considers possible solutions. The material under analysis is the original script for Miś and three versions of the English subtitles. The songs present in Miś have been analysed to define their most important features that should be preserved in subtitles, taking into account the limitations of translating lyrics and the constraints resulting from subtitling technical requirements.
Celem artykułu jest zbadanie, jaką rolę w filmie Miś Stanisława Barei odgrywają wszechobecne tam piosenki, a także próba odpowiedzi na pytanie, dlaczego napisy filmowe powinny zawierać ich tłumaczenie. W artykule omówiono problemy związane z przekładem na język angielski słów piosenek wykonywanych w filmie oraz wskazano możliwe rozwiązania translatorskie. Materiał badawczy stanowi scenariusz filmu Miś oraz trzy wersje napisów w języku angielskim. Teksty piosenek poddano analizie mającej na celu wyodrębnienie ich najważniejszych cech, które należy koniecznie zachować w tłumaczeniu, uwzględniając zarówno ograniczenia dotyczące tłumaczenia słów do muzyki, jak i wynikające ze specyfiki napisów filmowych.

Assessing the success of a translated text is one of the controversial topics often discussed in the field of translation studies. The definition of a so-called successful translation is itself controversial. Therefore, for the purpose of this study, the success of a given translation may be defined as transmitting a similar, though rarely identical, semantic frame reference in the Target Language (TL) as was intended by the Source Language (SL) and may be quantified by comparing alternate translations and choosing the one with the highest number of equivalent frame references. One of the factors which could be considered detrimental to the production of a successful translation, as defined above, is the (un)translatability of cultural terms. Cultural terms, defined here as expressions referring to concepts or entities that are unique to a certain culture, are believed to be untranslatable. This paper uses Arabic visual frames referencing the Egyptian garment ǧal-labiy-ya (or ǧilbāb) as an example and argues that (un)translatability can be quantified using semantic frames based on the assumption that all SL terms have multiple frame references, some of which, mostly the ones indicating denotative meaning, have parallels in the TL while some others, mostly the ones indicating connotative meaning, do not. The degree of (un)translatability may, therefore, be quantifiable by observing which TL terms possess a higher rate of similar frame references in SL, which aids in the evaluation of translated texts in terms of relative equivalence and the degree to which the Target Text (TT) audience receives similar information to that received by the Source Text (ST) audience.

The article focuses on the translation of religious lexis from Polish into Russian. The exemplificative material comes from the texts of Catholic provenance. Religious vocabulary, especially its connotational value, is one of the essential means of cultural transmission. When translating religious lexis, it is necessary to go deeper into cultural issues, treating them as part of comprehensive knowledge, but at the same time as very concrete and tangible instances of translational problems, which require the use of appropriate procedures, such as adaptation and exotisation. Translations contain incomplete semantically shifted equivalents or functional equivalents, i.e. phrases used in functionally analogous situations in the Orthodox faith, as well as exotisms.

Sommige hier voorgestelde verschijnselen die typisch zijn voor de middeleeuwse literatuur, zijn geanalyseerd met het oog op modern Nederlandse en (eventuele) Poolse vertalingen. Erotische elementen, metaforen en de noodzaak van aanvullende verklaringen of simplificaties worden hier getoond op basis van voorbeelden van reeds gepubliceerde teksten en andere mogelijke vertalingen.
This article outlines the strategies for the translation of Middle Dutch texts into Polish. Some chosen features typical for the medieval literature are analysed with regard to modern Dutch and (possible) Polish translations. Erotic elements, metaphors and the necessity of additional explanations or simplifications are shown based on some examples of the already published texts and other possible translations.

This commentary conserns the reasons and motivation for choosing particular novels to be translated into Macedonian. A short review of their style is given, as well as the common ground with the Macedonian literature. We describe the way of the working of the publishing houses which have decided to publish Polish literature. Problems in translation turn out to be of a cultural nature, concerning the differences and, as a result, the reader is presented with the picture of contemporary Polish society, which is overwhelmed by critical thinking, but still deals with the history as a way to further develop the tradition.

This article presents the rise of translated Polish literature to the Macedonian language in the thirty years period since Macedonia gained independence from Yugoslavia and transformed from a socialist to a capitalist system. The rise of private publishing houses automatically meant the rise of translating from other languages; in addition, the rise of foreign funds and especially the financial support by the EU in culture was a relevant factor for developing literary translations from Polish to the Macedonian language. The main part of this article is about the works which have been translated, their importance and the methods used in making the choices on what to translate.
Оваа статија е за рецепцијата на полската книжевност во Македонија и за промените во преведувачката политика во последните триесет години. Авторка та се обидува да ги издвои најважните библиографски единици од преведената литература и да даде една слика на тоа што и зошто се преведувало од полски јазик во овој период. Но, исто така, дава и еден кус преглед на мотивите и факторите кои влијаеле на овој неверојатен подем на преведувањето од полски јазик. Се разбира, разликите со претходниот период се очигледни, но исто така е важно да се нагласи дека полската литература во поново време станува значително позабележлива на книжевната сцена, што во голем дел е заслуга на амбициите на одделни издавачки куќи и преведувачи.

Terminologia muzyczna to ogromny zbiór podporządkowanych dziedzin terminologicznych nauk muzycznych. Czy chodzi o instrumenty, formy i gatunki muzyczne, teorię muzyki, akustykę bądź sposoby interpretacji itp., terminologia to podstawa komunikacji w poszczególnych dyscyplinach. Na dodatek terminologicznie jest bardzo skomplikowana. Przy przekładach z języka obcego na język słowacki mogą nastąpić trudności nie tylko z przekładem tekstu specjalistycznego, lecz także z przekładem tekstu literackiego, w którym taka leksyka występuje. W artykule porównane zostały wybrane przekłady terminów muzycznych w słowackich tłumaczeniach z języka francuskiego i zaproponowane możliwe rozwiązania pojawiających się problemów.
The musical science terminology represents a wide area of terminological sub-areas in musical science. Whether musical instruments are concerned or music forms and styles, music theory, acoustics or ways of interpretation, etc, the terminology gives the base for communication within certain fields. Apart from that, it is terminologically complicated. When translating something from a foreign language into Slovak, many difficulties may occur, not only if a special text is translated but also an artistic one, where lexica belonging to musical science can be found. In our report we compare some problems in musical science terminology translations in Slovak texts translated from the French language into Slovak, and we suggest possible solutions.

Niemenowska anglojęzyczna interpretacja „Marionetek” Cypriana Norwida różni się zarówno od polskojęzycznego wykonania utworu przez muzyka w 1973 roku, jak i od tekstu oryginału. Ich odmienność została pokazana w artykule dzięki szczegółowej i wielofazowej analizie – najpierw samego oryginału, potem tłumaczenia Norwidowego wiersza dokonanego przez Pawła Brodowskiego, następnie zaś wykonania wspomnianego przekładu przez Niemena na winylowej płycie Ode to Venus, które porównano z wcześniejszym nagraniem utworu Norwida na albumie Niemen vol. 2. Teksty oryginału i przekładu zbadano i zestawiono za pomocą metody kateny, natomiast ich muzyczne wykonania przy użyciu praw i zasad Petera Lowa, Johana Franzona i Andrew Kelly’ego
Czesław Niemen’s English interpretation of “Marionettes” differs both from his 1973 Polish version and the original text. The differences of the two renditions of Cyprian Norwid’s poem are demonstrated in the article by means of a detailed and multiphase analysis – first of the original poem, then of Paweł Brodowski’s translation, then finally, of Niemen’s performance of this translation on his album “Ode to Venus,” which is in turn compared to his earlier Polish recording of Norwid’s text on the album “Niemen vol. 2.” The original and translated texts are analysed and compared using the katena method, while their musical performances are assessed using Peter Low, Johan Franzon and Andrew Kelly’s laws and rules governing the translation of lyrics set to music.

This article explores the problems which occur when teaching the translation of functional texts into a foreign language (from Polish into German). The article especially focuses on lexicalterminological and pragmatic translation mistakes, their causes, and strategies for avoiding them. One of the biggest challenges when translating into a foreign language is to use correct and adequate equivalents. The authors argue that the competences needed for this task should be taught as early as possible during translation training. The authors have therefore analysed texts translated by BA translation students and have chosen examples which represent the most frequent categories of mistakes, e.g. word-to-word translation, breaching the target language‘s conventions, and (inter)cultural problems. The solutions proposed are based on functional translation theory and translation criticism, and also take into account the classifications of mistakes used in translation didactics.

Autorka stara się rozważyć kwestię przetłumaczalności niemieckich partykuł modalnych na przykładzie partykuły „auch”. Artykuł poświęcony jest możliwościom traslatorskim tej partykuły w języku polskim. Dotyczą one wyłącznie struktur partykułowych. Inne nie są brane pod uwagę. Analiza przeprowadzona jest na bazie semantyczno-pragmatycznej funkcji partykuły wposzczególnych typach zdań. Stwierdzenia autorki poparte są przykładami z tłumaczeń literatury niemieckiej na język polski. Okazuje się, że jedna partykuła „auch” może mieć kilka odpowiedników nawet w jednym typie zdania, uwarunkowanych kontekstem bądź wartością stylistyczną wypowiedzi. Autorka wyjaśnia, na czym polega dana ekwiwalencja. Wyniki analizy ekwiwalencyjnej partykuł mogą znaleźć zastosowanie nie tylko w translatoryce, ale również w dydaktyce języka niemieckiego.

Our article is an analysis of the issue of translating emotions in literary texts on the basis of a corpus which consists of fragments from Maupassant’s fantastic tales translated into Romanian. By means of a comparison of the original with the translated published versions, where we apply methods specific to translation history and criticism, we follow and assess the implications of the translator’s different (subjective) strategies on the lexical and pragmatic level used in order to render the various degrees of fear in the target language. 
Notre article a pour objectif une discussion des particularités de la traduction des émotions dans les textes littéraires, par l’intermédiaire d’une analyse traductologique réalisée sur un corpus de fragments tirés des contes de Maupassant traduits en roumain. En appliquant la méthodologie spécifique à la critique et histoire des traductions, notre analyse comparative du texte original et des diverses traductions roumaines mettra en évidence la place de la subjectivité du traducteur dans l’application des différentes stratégies traductives, sur le plan lexical et pragmatique, pour rendre en langue cible les différents degrés de la peur.

The article traces Polish translations of Dickinson’s poetry preceding and following the publication in the nineteen nineties of 200 poems by Emily Dickinson translated by Stanisław Barańczak. It comments on some Polish poets’ response to Dickinson in their own works and points to the growing body of publications online of private selections from Dickinson’s poems previously translated by established Polish poets (mostly Barańczak or Marjańska) as well as translations and original poems inspired by Dickinson’s work authored by less known poets, amateur translators and lovers of poetry. The article suggests that the increased Polish interest in Dickinson’s work is not only a kind of domino effect following Barańczak’s impressive translations. It also results from the growth of interest in translation studies and skills and must be related, too, to the fact that her poetry of private sensibility confronted with a dramatically changing world resonates with contemporary experience of the sensitive individual.

Artykuł został poświęcony kwestii błędów komunikacyjnych w procesie tłumaczenia polskiego tekstu prawnego na język ukraiński. Aktualność tematu badawczego wynika z konieczności zapewnienia ukraińskim prawnikom szerszego dostępu do polskojęzycznych aktów prawnych. Wzmożone zainteresowanie jest rezultatem sprawności wprowadzania przez Polskę europejskich praktyk w interpretacji prawa. W artykule został przedstawiony schemat komparatystycznej analizy polskich tekstów prawnych i prawniczych, scharakteryzowano grupy terminów prawnych pod względem trudności ich tłumaczenia na język ukraiński oraz określono najczęstsze przyczyny powstawania błędów komunikacyjnych. Tłumaczenie polskiego tekstu prawnego wymaga od tłumacza nie tylko doskonałej znajomości języka polskiego i ukraińskiego, ale także obowiązującego ustawodawstwa obu państw. Wspólna praca językoznawców, tłumaczy i prawników nad tworzeniem dwujęzycznych słowników terminologicznych pozwoli uniknąć błędów, które można zaobserwować w tłumaczeniach polskich tekstów prawnych na język ukraiński.
The article elucidates problems of translating Polish legal texts into Ukrainian. The topicality of the study consists in the necessity to provide Ukrainian lawyers with an open access to Polish legal acts. The importance of such an enterprise is enhanced by the fact of introducing European criteria of interpreting laws into the Polish legal practice. The author elaborates a scheme of comparative analysis of Polish legal texts, subdivides Polish legal terms into groups depending on difficulties of their translating into Ukrainian, describes common translation deviations. Adequate translation of Polish legal texts requires not only fluency in Polish and Ukrainian, but also some specialized knowledge of laws of both countries. The joint work of linguists, lawyers and translators will help to avoid typical mistakes found in translations of legal acts from Polish into Ukrainian.

Barbora Gregorová, překladatelka knižek Doroty Masłowské do češtiny, uvedla pro českého čtenáře velmi obtížnou pro překlad knižku — "Paw królowej" ("Královnina šavle"). Pokud srovnáme text originálu a překladu, najdeme několik druhů problémů, které se v českém textu našly, mezi nimi jsou: nečekaně silná rytmizace a vulgarizace textu, nesprávné použití obecné češtiny, redundance v překladu nebo chyby, jenž jsou výsledkem nepochopení překladatelkou textu orginálu. Tyto problémy ale nediskvalifikují český překlad, protože nedominují nad vynalezavými, dokonce bravurními překladatelskými náměty Báry Gregorové.
Barbora Gregorová, translator of Dorota Masłowska’s books to Czech language, presented to Czech readers a novel very complicated to translate — "Paw królowej" (Czech title: "Královnina šavle"). If we compare the text of original with the translation, we can find many groups of problems, which are present in Czech text, among them: unexpected strong rhythmization and vulgarization of the text, incorrect use of contemporary Czech language (obecná čeština), redundancy in translation or mistakes, which are the result of wrong understanding of original text by the translator. These problems do not disqualify Czech translation, because they do not dominate inventive, daring translating ideas of Bára Gregorová.

Članek obravnava problem svobode prevajalca pri prevajanju naslova proznega dela. To vprašanje se zdi bistveno ne samo zato, ker mora naslov v ciljnem jeziku ohraniti svoje glavne funkcije (identifikacijsko, obvestilno, pragmatično); potrebna sta tudi celovita analiza razmerja med izvirnim naslovom in delom ter upoštevanje „reprezentacijske” vloge naslova v drugotnem kulturnem okolju. Posebna pozornost je namenjena naslavljanju prevodov zbirk kratke proze s poimenovanji, ki so v izhodiščni kulturi že uveljavljeni kot naslovi drugih publikacij (Terra incognita, Noc w Lublanie). Prevajalec s tem zavede bralca in zlorabi prevajalsko svobodo. Članek analizira tudi prevode naslovov, ki ohranjajo značilen element tujosti (Čefurzy raus!), in naslove, ki zelo odstopajo od naslovov izvirnikov (Słońce w dolinie, Białe czereśnie, Pies). Največ možnosti za ustvarjalno svobodo ima prevajalec pri naslovih, ki vsebujejo element tujosti, takih, ki drugotnemu naslovniku ne vzbujajo skoraj nobenih asociacij. Zdi se, da je med omenjenimi praksami še najprimernejša opustitev izvirnega naslova in poimenovanje dela z naslovom, ki je plod interpretacije besedila ali navezave na eno izmed pomembnih tem ali motivov dela. A prevajalčevo svobodo tudi v tem primeru omejujejo pragmatične in etične zahteve. Prevajalca mora pri izbiri novega naslova voditi predvsem želja, da bi delu zagotovil čim širši krog bralcev v novem kulturnem okolju.
The article concerns the issue of the interpreter’s freedom concerning translations of the titles of prose works. The matter seems important not only because of the necessity of reserving the title’s essential functions (identification, information, pragmatics), not only because of the need of a complex analysis of the original title — work relationship, but also because of the ‘ambassadorial’ role of — this title in the secondary cultural space. Attention was drawn to the praxis of giving the interpreted collections of short stories (Terra Incognita, Noc w Lublanie) titles already existing in the initial culture and given to other publications. It is malpractice and misleading to a secondary reader. Also, the titles with a remaining foreign dominant element (Čefurzy raus!) and titles significantly different from the original titles (Słońce w dolinie, Białe czereśnie, Pies) were discussed. The space of freedom and the opportunity of a creative attitude appears especially in cases of titles containing a the foreign element, those which do not evoke almost any associations to the secondary reader. In these cases, the most appropriate practice seems to be deleting the original title and giving a new one, one dependent on the work’s interpretation or containing its important subject or topos. Then, the interpreter’s freedom is limited due to the nature of pragmatic and moral imperatives. In choosing the new title, the interpreter should be guided principally by the desire to ensure that the work reaches as many readers in the new cultural space as possible.

Nazwy flory określające przyrodę żywą stanowią bogatą i zróżnicowaną część polskiej, słowackiej i słoweńskiej leksyki. Istnieją opracowania dotyczące leksyki botanicznej jednego języka, mało jednak jest prac porównawczych. Nazwy roślin w języku polskim i słowackim są dwuczłonowe, to w zasadzie tłumaczenia nazw łacińskich. W nazwach botanicznych w języku słoweńskim często spotykamy się natomiast z nazwą jednowyrazową. Zdarza się, że we wszystkich trzech badanych językach mamy wyraz – homonim homogeniczny, np. drevo – drzewo – drevo. Są też przypadki, kiedy to dwa języki mają nazwę w tym samym rodzaju, trzeci język ma inny rodzaj, a nawet zupełnie inny leksem (pierwiosnek – trobentica – prvosienka). Ciekawe są przykłady, w których występuje przymiotnik oznaczający kolor (Anchusa azurea – smohla modrá – farbownik lazurowy). Dla tłumacza literatury fachowej ważne jest, żeby znał: normy językowe obu języków (wyjściowego i docelowego), budowę słowotwórczą wyrazów w obu językach, wszystkie znaczenia leksykalne i semantyczne, włącznie z odcieniami stylistycznymi, oraz orientował się w gramatyce i problematyce danej dziedziny.
The names of flora constitute a rich and differentiated part of the Polish, Slovak, and Slovenian lexes. There exist studies of the botanical lexis of the individual languages, there are, however, only a few comparative works. Plant names in both Polish and Slovak consist of two parts, being basically translations of Latin names. Botanical names in Slovene often consist of only one word.It happens that in all the three analyzed languages there is a homogenic homonym, e.g. drevo – drzewo – drevo. There can be cases that two languages have a name of the same gender, but the third language has not or the equivalent is a different lexeme (pierwiosnek – trobentica – prvosienka). Interesting are also cases when the adjective of colour is different (Anchusa azurea – smohla modrá – farbownik lazurowy). For the translator of scientific texts it is important to know language norms in both languages, to know the grammatical features of these lexemes, to know the word-formative structure and all lexical and semantic meanings, including the stylistic ones, and to be well orientend in the issues of the given field.

Odwołując się do metafory przeprawy przez niebezpieczne morze, można powiedzieć, że tłumacz własnego tekstu rzeczywiście zapuszcza się na jakieś nieznane wody, meandruje między górami lodowymi źródłowych i docelowych języków, kultur i tradycji pisarstwa akademickiego. Niniejszy artykuł jest zaproszeniem do prześledzenia procesu autoprzekładu na język angielski mojej własnej książki pt. Przekładanie obrazu świata. Językowy obraz świata w przekładzie artystycznym, wydanej po polsku w 2018 roku, a osadzonej tematycznie w (głównie) słowiańskich tradycjach etnolingwistyki i badań nad językowym obrazem świata. Książka ukazała się w języku angielskim w 2021 roku pod tytułem Translating a Worldview. Linguistic Worldview in Literary Translation. Rozważane w artykule aspekty autoprzekładu obejmują pamięć autora tekstu źródłowego (tj. moją własną) dotyczącą procesu pisania oryginału, polski i angielski styl akademicki, odtwarzanie terminologii (w tym kluczowego terminu językowy obraz świata – linguistic worldview/linguistic view of X, czy pojęcie/koncept – concept), sam tytuł monografii jako aspekt rekonstrukcji treści, a także zarządzanie cytatami. Co więcej, proces autoprzekładu okazał się niełatwy, bo wysiłek zrozumienia autora oryginału powiększył się o wymiar zmagania, by zrozumieć samą siebie: własne myśli i intuicje, zapisane jakiś czas temu.
To use the metaphor of a voyage across a rough sea, it can be said that a self-translator does indeed venture into some unknown waters, meandering between the icebergs of the source and target languages, cultures and academic writing traditions. This study is an invitation to trace back the process of self-translation into English of my own book Przekładanie obrazu świata. Językowy obraz świata w przekładzie artystycznym, published in Polish in 2018, and couched within the (mostly) Slavic traditions of ethnolinguistics and the study of linguistic worldviews. The book appeared in English in 2021 under the title Translating a Worldview. Linguistic Worldview in Literary Translation. The aspects of self-translation considered in the paper include the source-text author’s (i.e. my own) memory of the (original) writing process, the Polish and English academic styles, re-creation of the terminology (including the key terms językowy obraz świata – linguistic worldview/linguistic view of X, or pojęcie/koncept – concept), the title itself as an aspect of content reconstruction, as well as management of quotations. Moreover, the process of self-translation turned out to be no easy task as the effort to understand the original author was doubled by the struggle to understand myself: my own thoughts and intuitions, recorded some time ago.
