    The article discusses the theme of melancholy in Polish prose of the 21st century, using four contemporary novels – Pokolenie Ikea [The IKEA generation](2012) by Piotr C., Wszyscy jesteśmy hipsterami [We are all hipsters] (2016) by Dariusz Radecki, Melanżeria [Melangery] (2011) by Anna Klara Majewska and Za pięć rewolta [Five minutes to a revolt] (2011) by Dawid Kain – as conspicuous examples of its presence. The author suggests that due to the increased pace of social and technological changes the generation of thirty-year-olds experiences a feeling of melancholy, formerly characteristic for elderly people and analyses the protagonists of the novels selected to present how they cope with a reality that does not fulfil them.

    Rozważania koncentrują się wokół problemów poetyki tekstów Jarosława Marka Rymkiewicza pochodzących ze zbioru „Zachód słońca w Milanówku”. Szczególnie interesujące wydaje się być, strategiczne w założeniu, połączenie struktury wierszowej, rażącej wręcz banalnością, z takąż samą najczęściej, szeroko rozumianą warstwą stylistyczną oraz eschatologiczną tematyką. W artykule próbuje się wykazać sensowność i celowość połączenia nadmiernie prostej formy z „wysoką” nutą podejmowanej problematyki, oscylującej wokół spraw ostatecznych - przemijania, śmierci, starości. Autorka jest skłonna uznać tego typu zabiegi za współczesny sposób prezentacji - pełen dystansu, ironii/autoironii - tematów ważkich, lecz powtarzalnych. To jakby poetycka samoobrona przed trywialnością: poprzez maksymalne ujawnianie banału – odejście od banału.
    The garden of poetic tradition. Some remarks on the "Sunset in Milanówek" by Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz The considerations revolve around the issues of the poeticsof the texts by Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz from his collection “Sunset in Milanówek”. Particularly interesting is the strategic connection of the poetic structure of the line, blatantly banal, with the same broadly defined stylistic aspect and eschatological themes. The article tries to show the wisdom and desirability of combining the overly simple form with the "high" note of the subject matter, oscillating around issues of final character – passing, death, old age. The author is willing to consider such actions as a modern method of presentation – distanced, full of irony /self-depreciation – weighty topics, but repetitive. It is like a poetic defence against the trivial: through the maximum disclosure of banality – adeparture from the banality.

    The author addresses the workshop etudes made by Filip Bajon, which he directed during his studies at the Lodz Film School. Comparing Contribution to the Theory of Linguistics from 1972, And others from 1973, and Blacks from 1973, she notes both a consistency in style and a similarity in leitmotifs between these and the director’s later works. These is, above all, a profound reflection on the issue of passing, of both inanimate objects and human existence, and also an attempt to capture causal changes by showing characters in situations that are groundbreaking for them.

    Artykuł jest dedykowany pamięci prof. Bożeny Chrząstowskiej jako badaczce doceniającej i popularyzującej poezję współczesną w szkole. Jednym z cenionych przez Nią twórców był Józef Baran (ur. 1947). Jego najnowszy tom pt. W wieku odlotowym potwierdza popularność liryki „środka”, wyprowadzonej z tradycji do Gałczyńskiego; przystępnej dla czytelnika i zarazem niebanalnej. Zbiór W wieku odlotowym ma charakter lirycznej autobiografii, przynosi też refleksję na temat sensu ludzkiej egzystencji. W tomie tym konwencja elegijna miesza się z autoironią i humorem. Poeta pisze o przemijaniu jako doświadczeniu bardzo osobistym i zarazem uniwersalnym, wpisanym w harmonię bytu.
    The article is dedicated to the memory of prof. Bożena Chrząstowska as a researcher appreciating and popularizing contemporary poetry at school. One of the people appreciated by her was Józef Baran (born 1947). His most recent volume entitled Before Departure refers to the popularity of the poetry of the "middle", derived from Gałczyński’s tradition, accessible to the reader and, at the same time, original. The collection Before Departure has the character of a lyrical autobiography, it also brings reflections on the meaning of human existence. In this volume, the elegiac convention is mixed with self-irony and humor. The poet writes about transience as a very personal, but also a universal experience, inscribed in the harmony of being.

    This article attempts to identify the issues of experiencing the city and its multi-faceted conceptualizations, which are rarely exhibited in research concerning women’s poetry, but often appear in contemporary literature. It offers interpretation of the works of some of the most interesting Polish poets representing various generations (the essay discusses works by Julia Hartwig, Anna Frajlich, and Anna Augustyniak) and worldviews, highlighting specific places and emphasizing the meaning of the senses and emotions in their concretization. It directs attention to the category of experience, examines its constitution and layering progressing in time. It distinguishes particular dimensions – the memory process, the feeling oftransience, irreversible loss – and various relationships between them. The analysis, focusing on depicting the sensual and affective experience of urban space, aims to characterize the category of the subject originally included in poetry and illustrates its transformations.

    Tym, co wyróżnia Zapiski myśliwego Turgieniewa i Zwierciadło morza Conrada, jest wierna obserwacja połączona z niezwykłą świadomością przedstawianych miejsc. W swoisty realistyczny i impresjonistyczny sposób obaj pisarze ukazują wieczną przyrodę – las i morze – jako potężną siłę obojętną na los przemijającego człowieka, jako zwierciadło życia, sumienia i problemów. Świat przyrody – kompletny i samowystarczalny – egzystuje doskonale bez ingerencji człowieka. Zarówno nieprzeniknione, ponure lasy, jak i bezkres samotnych wód są czynnikami mającymi wpływ na losy bohaterów Conrada i Turgieniewa lub kształtującymi je. Natura wpływa na emocje bohaterów i daje poczucie ciągłości istnienia. W Zapiskach myśliwego oraz w Zwierciadle morza człowiek żyje blisko natury, a nawet w jedności z nią. Refleksje nad przyrodą skłaniają do rozmyślań nad przemijaniem rzeczy i dążeniem do wolności. Podczas gdy w Zapiskach Turgieniewa przyroda jest wyznacznikiem wartości moralnych, kryterium oceny działań człowieka oraz obrazem jego wewnętrznego świata, u Conrada stanowi pretekst do wyrażania wartości etycznych – przede wszystkim etosu pracy, wierności, honoru, solidarności i poszukiwania sensu istnienia.
    Both Turgenev’s A Sportsman’s Sketches and Conrad’s The Mirror of the Sea demonstrate faithful observation and rendering of life and an unusual awareness of place. In a specific realistic and impressionistic manner they depict eternal nature – the forest and the sea – as a powerful force indifferent to transient man, as a mirror of life, human conscience and problems. Nature is complete and self-sufficient; the world seems to work perfectly well without man. Both the impenetrable, sombre forests and the vast solitude of waters become factors that affect or shape the destiny of Conrad’s and Turgenev’s heroes. Nature highlights the characters’ emotions and provides a sense of continuity of existence. In A Sportsman’s Sketches and The Mirror of the Sea man lives close to nature, even in union with it. Reflections upon nature lead to bewailing the transience of things and to similar communications of the theme of freedom. However, whereas in Turgenev’s Sketches, nature is a force capable to influence the character of man and determine his moral development, Conrad uses nature as a pretext for the expression of ethical values – mainly work, fidelity, honour, solidarity and a search for the meaning of existence.

    Although Hermann Hesse is perceived by his readers mainly as a prose writer, Paweł Moskała discloses Hesse’s other face, and draws his attention to Hesse’s poetry. In the article below Moskała reviews the array of the poet’s attitudes towards death.The author, analyzing the theme of death in Hesse’s poetry in various periods of his writing,concentrates on the evolution of poet’s attitudes, from existential-subjective to reflective. It should be underlined that the awareness of transience and theanticipation of death accompanied the poet during his whole life and in all his works, in which the desire to live interlaced with the humilitytowards death and the acceptance of volatility of life.

    Even though Gilbert Keith Chesterton remained a political Rousseauism-like radical throughout his life, with time the ideal of political liberty understood in line with the philosophy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau found less and less vivid expression inhis writings, leaving the most important element animating them virtually invisible for less knowledgeable readers. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate and explain thisfact on the basis of the analysis of one of the most famous poems penned by the English author, entitled To St. Michael, in Times of Peace (1929). The analysis follows the methodology devised by a distinguished Polish scholar, Stefan Sawicki.

    The article attempts to reveal a reconstruction of Piotr Chmielowski’s critical thought regarding the poetical works written by Adam Asnyk (pen-name E...ly). The starting point for the discussion is a set of variations for different editions of Zarys literatury polskiej as well as other works of the critic elucidating the specificity, importance and the character of the poetry of E…ly. The article attempts to show why it was just the figure of the poet that was necessary and constituted a model figure for revealing the attempts of saving continuance of not only Polish poetry but also national culture and heritage. In his critical reflection, Chmielowski tries to find continuity between the Romantic paradigm and the post-January insurgency paradigm that was to define the obligations and the status of poetry, as well as to identify, uphold important question for Chmielowski himself as to why it was necessary to find among the generation of post-insurgency Poles a figure that would resemble Ignacy Kraszewski, a man-institution, and thus provide an exemplary model, necessary and much needed model figure in upholding and maintaining national consciousness and in preserving continuity. It is the culture and literature of the latter half of the nineteenth century that Chmielowski investigates in search of poetry and the poet as an icon of the nineteenth centuryness and modernity in the post-January insurgency non-poetical times. Asnyk can be seen, in Chmielowski’s terms, as an icon of the modern poet, a keystone figure who straddled the line between what can be consolidated and what was left to be saved in order to preserve the paradigm of Romantic poeticalness and the necessity for adjusting to new cultural circumstances and contemporary expectations on the part of receivers.

    There is an apparent contradiction between the catholic doctrine of death as a result of the Original Sin and the fact that the biological death is a common and somewhat necessary phenomenon in the world of nature. Analysis of biblical data and interpretation of the Magisterium of the Church’s dogmatic teaching allows us to propose a solution to the problem by stating that the primary consequence of sin is spiritual death, that is, breaking communion with God, and bodily death is only a secondary, consequence result of sin, which means that the experience of bodily death has changed for man after the fall. This proposal is corroborated by opinions of some recognized contemporary theologians.
    Istnieje pozorna sprzeczność pomiędzy katolickim nauczaniem o śmierci jako skutku grzechu a faktem, że śmierć biologiczna jest zjawiskiem powszechnym i poniekąd koniecznym w świecie przyrody. Analiza danych biblijnych oraz interpretacja dogmatyczna wypowiedzi Magisterium pozwala na sformułowanie propozycji rozwiązania owej trudności. Zakłada ona, że obiektywnym skutkiem grzechu jest śmierć duchowa, czyli zerwanie komunii z Bogiem, natomiast śmierć cielesna jest skutkiem jedynie subiektywnym: w znaczeniu zmiany charakteru tego doświadczenia dla człowieka. Twierdzenia takie znajdują poparcie w myśli uznanych, współczesnych teologów.

    The noun heḇel is the most characteristic term in the whole Book of Ecclesiastes. Because of this word, many people perceive the book as the one which deals primarily with vanity and which posits that everything is futile (cf. 1:2 and 12:8). The present article aims to answer the question posed in its title: Does Qoheleth really claim human life to be futile? The first part of the article comprises the analysis of the noun heḇel in the Old Testament. Subsequently, the word’s usage and meaning in the Book of Ecclesiastes are explored. The final part of the article analyzes the texts that make use of the word heḇel to speak about human life (namely, 3:19; 6:4-12; 7:15; 9:9; 11:8-10). The interpretation of these texts and the supporting arguments resulting from the analyses conducted by other scholars (e.g. C.L. Seow, L. Mazzinghi, K. Bardski, G. Ravasi, A. Bonora, T. Krüger i L . Schwienhorst-Schönberger) lead to the conclusion that Qoheleth does not judge human life as futile. What he claims instead is that human life is brief, transient and passes quickly.
