Opis:
The nutrient composition of some neglected and less familiar plant seeds was studied. The seeds showed wide variation in constituents and could be compared with commonly consumed food articles. The protein content ranged írom 29.2 g /kg in Callitris intratropica to 253.5 g/kg in Percopsis elata, while the carbohydrate content was found to be between 330.5 g/kg and 734.8 g/kg in P. elata and Dracena mannii, respectively. The highest fat and fibre content of 215 g/kg and 290.5 g/kg occurred in P. elata and C. intratropica, respectively. P. elata, D. mannii and C. intratropica promises a good source of protein, carbohydrate and fibre, respectively. The legumes showed high ash content but most seeds were rich in Mg, K and F and defficient in Na and Cu. Investigation of the antin utrients and possible toxic effects of the seeds is necessary before their full utilisation.

The Bahia Blanca Estuary includes a large tidal plain with an area close to 1150 km2.Mud is predominant in its sediments, where a significant population of the crab Chasmagnathus granulata lives during the whole year.Mo reover, there are important urban and industrial discharges into this environment. Cd and Pb concentrations were determined in samples of water (for both dissolved and suspended particulate matter) and surface sediments (total and <63 μm fractions).Or ganic matter was analysed in the sediments, while temperature, salinity, pH and dissolved oxygen were measured in the estuarine water The metal concentrations determined in this study were: 1.47 ± 1.08 μg Cd g−1 and 14.68 ± 4.31 μg Pb g−1 in surface sediments; 2.21 ± 1.33 μg Cd g−1 and 25.70 ± 7.09 μg Pb g−1 in the <63 μm sediment fraction; 0.18 ± 0.11 μg Cd g−1 and below the analytical detection limit of Pb in suspended particulate matter. Furthermore, dissolved Cd and Pb were lower than the norms for marine and estuarine waters (2 μg dm−3 for Cd and 5 μg dm−3 for Pb, E.P.A.). Simultaneously, the effects of Cd and Pb were studied on recently hatched larvae of Ch. granulata, through 96-hour semi-static acute assays.Via bility was the criterion assessed in the assays.LC 50 (96 h) for Cd was 46.43 μg dm−3 (36.92 − 56.34 μg dm−3), whilst that for Pb was 1. 0 mg dm−3 (0.79 − 1.23 mg dm−3), which demonstrates that Cd is more toxic towards larvae.F inally, both LC50 values determined for Cd and Pb were higher than the corresponding metal concentrations measured in the Bah´ıa Blanca environment.

The investigations aimed to determine the impact of cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa (K¨utz.) K¨utz. and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (L.) Ralfs ex Bornet et Flah., both toxic algae, on the grazing intensity of Daphnia magna Straus. In order to determine the parameter permitting the quantitative determination of the grazing intensity of herbivorous organisms, methods based on the following techniques were applied: microscopy, to determine the degree of gut fullness; spectrophotometry, to determine the levels of chlorophyll a and its degradation products in the food composition; high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to determine the content of exogenous and endogenous carotenoids. Each of these methods confirmed that the tested algae species inhibited grazing intensity in D. magna Straus. The most obvious effects were obtained when M. aeruginosa (K¨utz.) K¨utz. was used as food. With these cyanobacteria, the gut fullness indicator did not exceed 58%, and the chlorophyll a content in the digestive system of the tested D. magna was three times lower than that in the control organisms. It seems that the defensive reaction of organisms was a reversible process. However, the possibility of a long-term, sublethal influence of cyanobacteria on the physiology and internal processes of this species cannot be ruled out.

There is a linear interrelationship between the logarithm of the dose of ASE and mortality of pregnant mice. Opis:
During the early epoch of biological evolution, aluminium was not available for the primitive organisms because of the low solubility of aluminium compounds. This can explain why aluminium is toxic for the present-day living organisms. We studied the toxic effect of aluminium by feeding Drosophila melanogaster adults for 24 hrs. with a 1% sugar solution containing different concentrations of aluminium sulphate. The effect of magnesium chloride was also tested in combination with aluminium. After 24 hrs. we calculated the survival rate, and solubilised the flies in concentrated nitric acid in a microwave oven. The Al, Na, Mg and Zn content of the solubilised flies was measured with the ICP-AES method. We found no change in the Zn content while the Al and Mg content changed according to the treatment, and the Na content decreased significantly (20-30%) in all the cases. We suppose that the flies were mainly killed by the elevated sodium efflux resulting in a decreased intracellular pH. The cause of the elevated Na efflux could be the increased rigidity of the cell membrane caused by the aluminium. We discuss the experimental results and the supposable mechanism of toxicity.

On the basis of the use of mathematical model of the molecular dynamics of alternative effects ot xenobiotics, a number of regression methods to analyze experimental data has been proposed. Three groups of experimental animals were used: Cypris pubera, Brachidanio rerio and Pseudorazbora panva. Ali of them were examined for yarious, fixed in time concentrations of ions of copper, nickel and ammonium in aquatic environment. Yalues of: threshold (Tg) and characteristic (τ) times of the effect, the concentration limits (minimum toxic) of toxicants (Cg), internal activity of the "xenobiotic -macromolecule of organisms" formed complexes (α) and apparent constants rates of the balance of their decay (Kapp) were set out. Several methods of detecting the influence of subacute effects on the overall dynamics of toxic effect of xenobiotics at its Iow concentrations in the aquatic environment were proposed.

Chromium is one of the most common toxic metals present in the environment that induces various toxic effects in plants. A pot experiment was conducted to determine the effects of chromium on germination percentage, seedling growth, chlorophyll ‘a’, ‘b’ and proline content of Sesbania sesban (L.) Merr. The seedlings were treated with different concentrations of control, 0.10, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00 g kg-1 of chromium. The parameters such as germination percentage, root and shoot length, seedling fresh weight dry weight, chlorophyll ‘a’, ‘b’ and proline content of leaves were measured. Our results indicated that a significant inhibitory effect was observed at all levels of chromium compared to control. Increasing the concentration of chromium to 1.00 g kg-1 showed a significant decrease in seed germination, shoot and root length, fresh weight, dry weight and chlorophyll ‘a’ and ‘b’ content of plant. While proline, catalase and peroxidase contents were increased by increasing Cr concentration. It was also noted that accumulation of chromium in the roots was much higher than the shoots of the seedlings under treatment.
