    Przestrzeń publiczna zlokalizowana w centrum miasta ma szczególne znaczenie. Pełni nie tylko istotne funkcje gospodarcze, społeczne i kulturowe, ale jest także nośnikiem tożsamości miasta, współtworzy jego wizerunek i wpływa na atrakcyjność miasta jako całości. Jakość przestrzeni publicznej centrum przekłada się na konkretne korzyści w sferze ekonomicznej, buduje spójność społeczną, wzmacnia identyfikację mieszkańców ze swoim miastem i podnosi jakość ich życia. Przestrzeń publiczna może także korzystnie wpływać na zdrowie poprzez umożliwianie aktywnej rekreacji oraz na poprawę bezpieczeństwa publicznego dzięki zapewnianiu obecności użytkowników w przestrzeni miasta o różnych porach dnia. Jakość przestrzeni publicznej zależy od wielu czynników, o charakterze fizycznym i społecznym, obiektywnych i subiektywnych. Dopiero połączenie tych czynników stanowi o wysokiej jakości przestrzeni publicznej. Miasta, dążąc do zapewnienia wysokiej jakości przestrzeni publicznej centrum, powinny świadomie ją kształtować i zmieniać oraz dostosowywać do współczesnych potrzeb. 
    Public space located in town center is of particular importance: it fulfills fundamental economic, social and cultural functions, at the same time being the carrier of town identity, creating its image and influencing attractiveness of town as a whole. The quality of public space of town center evokes economic benefits, underpins social cohesion, enhances the identification of inhabitants with their town and increases their quality of life. Public space can also positively influence the public health due to enabling active recreation and public safety thanks to the presence of users in urban space at the different times of the day. The quality of public space depends on various factors, of physical and social character, objective and subjective ones. Only combination of these factors can constitute the high quality of public space. Towns which want to assure the high quality of public space of town center should strive to develop and transform it, adjusting it to contemporary needs and ensuring realization of all essential factors.

    Public space is an important element of urban structure, playing various spatial, social and economic roles in towns/cities. Its quality influences the quality of life of the inhabitants and the attractiveness of the town as a whole. Public space located in town center is the most representative of its identity and image, and also serves multiple functions and activities. The quality of urban space depends on different factors, which have been discussed in professional literature for the last few decades. The author of this paper developed a model for assessment of the quality of public space in town centers based on studies of methods already used in Poland and abroad, and the analysis of trends and ideas which should be taken into consideration while constructing a set of criteria for assessment methods. The main goal of this paper is to present the methodology of research on the quality of public space in town centers using this model. An important element of the model is the proposed method of delimiting the research area – the town center – based on identification of key public space of a town. The model comprises three methods, which can provide valuable information on the quality of public space, and also serve as a basis for constructing ratings of towns in each of these methods and the model as a whole. The research conducted using this model in chosen medium-sized towns of the Łódź region showed that the results of ratings obtained using particular methods and the whole model coincide with subjective opinions on public space in town centers given by its users and professionals evaluating it.

Work focused foremost on research and presentation of remains of two streets, running east and south of the southeastern corner of the main town square, and the adjoining monuments. Research and conservation continued also on the remains of public Roman baths dating from the 1st to the 3rd century AD, located in the area south of the square. Maintenance conservation was carried out in Houses H21c and H1 and in the ancient town center. Land grading to enhance exhibition value and ensure rainwater drainage was carried out in some areas.

    W ramach RPO 2007-2013 regiony dosyć dowolnie kształtowały swoje polityki rewitalizacyjne. Na podstawie badań ewaluacyjnych prowadzonych dla województw dolnośląskiego, małopolskiego i podkarpackiego sformułowano rekomendacje, które odpowiednio wykorzystane pozwolą na lepsze programowanie rewitalizacji w kolejnym okresie 2014-2020.
    One of the most interesting urban quarters of the XIX-century building in Bytom center, located at the present Kosciuszko Square, was demolished in the 80's with mostly political reasons. Over the next 30 years in its place worked very crudely decorated square. It was in 2010, completed the reconstruction of the historic quarter of the urban structure, in a modern, but referring also a feature of this history A similar process was established in adjacent Kwietniewski street quarter. It seems that this reconstruction can trigger a number of positive changes in the center of Bytom.

    In 2012 and 2013, the Polish–Egyptian Conservation Mission to Marina el-Alamein focused on research and conservation in the public part of the ancient town, the dwelling houses and the necropolis. A site presentation program was continued in the area south of a public square, where remains of Roman public baths, in use from the 2nd to the 4th century, have survived. Current maintenance and conservation was carried out on the site of dwelling houses and, in 2013, on the aboveground mausoleum of tomb T21 in the necropolis. Conservation of mural paintings was undertaken also during the seasons.

    Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie wyników badań przeprowadzonych na podstawie autorskiej metody oceny jakości przestrzeni publicznej centrum miasta, wykazujących związek pomiędzy jakością przestrzeni publicznej centrum a procesem rewitalizacji tej strefy miasta. Jakość przestrzeni miejskiej ma współcześnie istotne znaczenie zarówno dla jakości życia mieszkańców, jak i atrakcyjności miasta dla użytkowników zewnętrznych i inwestorów. Przestrzeń publiczna rozumiana jako przestrzeń otwarta o ogólnej dostępności pełni ważne funkcje społeczne, kulturalne, gospodarcze, rekreacyjne i turystyczne, jest nośnikiem tożsamości miasta, a także buduje jego wizerunek i jest czynnikiem identyfikacji dla mieszkańców. W związku z tak ważną rolą przestrzeni publicznej, szczególnie usytuowanej w centrum miasta, zasadnicze znaczenie ma jej wysoka jakość. Aby określić jakość przestrzeni publicznej centrum miasta opracowano autorską metodę oceny, składającą się z trzech elementów: waloryzacji graficznej, waloryzacji tabelarycznej i badań kwestionariuszowych. Metoda ta umożliwia ocenę jakości istniejącej przestrzeni publicznej, ale może stanowić też istotną przesłankę w projektowaniu przestrzeni publicznej oraz programowaniu inwestycji i działań w niej zachodzących. Rewitalizacja centrum miasta stanowić może ważny instrument poprawy jakości przestrzeni publicznej, w przypadku właściwie zaprogramowanego procesu rewitalizacji, uwzględniającego istotne czynniki jakości przestrzeni publicznej, rzutujące na: witalność, spełnianie potrzeb, dostępność, kompozycję i czytelność, bezpieczeństwo oraz spełnianie zasad zrównoważonego rozwoju. Badania przeprowadzone na grupie sześciu wybranych miast średnich regionu łódzkiego wykazały zależność pomiędzy wysoką jakością przestrzeni publicznej miasta a rewitalizacją jego centrum.
    The goal of this article is presentation of research results led on the basis of author’s method of assessment of quality of public space. The research revealed the connection between the quality of public space of town center and the revitalization process of this area. The quality of urban space has in our times important meaning as well for the quality of life of inhabitants as for the attractiveness of town for investors and other outer users. Public space conceived as an open space of common accessibility constitutes the element of urban system, fulfilling different functions, being also an important element of town’s identity, creating its image and standing for a strong factor of identification for inhabitants. Due to the important role of public space, especially this located in town center, its quality is of fundamental role. In order to determine the quality of public space of town center, the method of assessment was elaborated, consisting of three elements: graphic valorization, checklist valorization and surveys of users’ opinions. This method enables the evaluation of quality of the existent public space, but it also can be a helpful instrument in process of designing of public space and programming the investments and events in the future. Revitalization of public space of town center can be an important instrument of improvement of its quality, but only in case of the properly programmed revitalization process, taking under consideration essential factors of quality of public space, influencing: vitality, fulfillment of needs, accessibility, composition and legibility, public safety and coherence with rules of sustainable development. Research led in six middle-sized towns of Łódź region revealed the relation between the high quality of public space and the revitalization of town center.

    Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badań jakości przestrzeni publicznej centrum miasta przeprowadzonych w wybranych miastach średnich regionu łódzkiego, przy zastosowaniu autorskiej metody oceny. Metoda ta składa się z trzech elementów: waloryzacji graficznej, waloryzacji tabelarycznej i badań sondażowych, w wyniku których otrzymywane są rezultaty liczbowe, umożliwiające dokonywanie analiz porównawczych przestrzeni publicznej miast w różnych aspektach. Ostatecznym efektem metody jest ranking miast, którego wyniki można przeanalizować stosując przyjęte kryteria. Badania wykazały, że najważniejszym czynnikiem wysokiej jakości przestrzeni publicznej centrum miasta jest właściwie zaplanowany i przeprowadzony program rewitalizacji, który wywołuje pozytywne zmiany we wszystkich aspektach zidentyfikowanych jako czynniki jakości przestrzeni publicznej, w tym animację nowych aktywności.
    This paper presents the outcomes of research on the quality of public space of town center, led in chosen medium-sized towns of Łódź region, using the authors’ method of assessment. Method consists of three elements: graphic valorisation, checklist valorisation and surveys, each of them giving numerical results, which enables comparison of the quality of public space in different aspects. The final effect of the method is ranking of towns, which can be analysed applying adopted criteria. Research revealed that the most important criterion of the high quality of public space of town center is well planned and executed revitalisation program, which introduces positive changes in all aspects identified as factors of quality of public space, between them animation of new activities.

    Przedmiotem artykułu jest analiza uwarunkowań socjalno-ekonomicznych i kierunków rozwoju przestrzennego małych miast obwodu lwowskiego, leżących w 30-kilometrowej strefie przygranicznej. Na charakterystycznych przykładach Mościsk i Rawy Ruskiej opisano w porządku chronologicznym rozwój przestrzenny ich centrów w drugiej połowie XX wieku, kładąc nacisk na brak efektywnych rozwiązań uwzględniających takie czynniki, jak kształtowanie przestrzeni publicznych, ochrona zabytków i obsługa międzynarodowego ruchu turystycznego. Opisano koncepcje projektowe kształtowania przestrzeni publicznych w centrach wymienionych miast.
    The subject of the article is to analyse the socio-economic backgrounds and directions of spatial development of small towns in the 30 km border area of Lviv region. The spatial development of the centres of Mostyska and Rava-Ruska, as typical examples, is chronologically described in the second half of the XX century. Emphasizing the lack of effective solutions for the public space formation, protection of historical heritage and maintenance of international tourism. We describe the design concept of the public spaces formation in the centers of these cities.

    Nowadays, it is impossible to ensure sustainable development of the state without using innovative policies of territorial development, one of which is a city revitalization policy. This article defines the main causes of city center degradation and typical approaches to revitalizing city centers in Europe and North America. The New Urbanism principles are outlined as regards city center revitalization, with an emphasis on their potential importance for sustainable urban development. The evolution of Town Centre Management (TCM) and the features of its application are characterized by authors with a focus on the mechanisms of anti-crisis management professionalization in the conditions of degrading city centers. A model of the public policy on city center revitalization based on the TCM concept is presented, which envisages the functioning of a TCM manager (office) of (with a list of the main tasks); objectives and the sequence of policy implementation stages; application of tools for public participation and a public-private partnership in this process; city center revival through an integrated effect on various spheres (community, economy, space and environment), and, as a result, achievement of a multiplicative effect for the promotion and development of the entire city. The study used a set of general scientific and specialized methods that are based on the modern scientific principles of public administration and its related sciences (geography, economics, sociology, culturology, etc.), and interdisciplinary and systematic approaches.

Jednym z opisanych środków niezbędnych do osiągnięcia jedności cywilizacji światowej jest rekonstrukcja programów edukacyjnych, a także postaw współczesnych społeczeństw wobec ludzkości całego świata. Dlatego autor wyjaśnia główne założenia rekonstrukcji społecznej i przedstawia edukację nie tylko jako środek, ale także jako cel głębokiej rekonstrukcji.
    The shopping center is now an important element of economic development. It sets modern solutions, creates architectural trends, changes the lifestyle. It becomes an element of the urban structure. The article presents an attempt to show the shopping center in the urban structure and the evolution of its functions that contribute to the development of trade. The research methods used are a review of current literature on the subject and own analysis using SWOT analysis.
