    In October and December 2005, trial archaeological excavations were conducted on the north side of the Podgórska Street in Krakow, in an area of Medieval city wall of Kazimierz, in its fragment which currently constitutes a fence of the Hospitallers Hospital. Results showed that the structure of the stone defensive wall is not uniform and phases of its changes related primarily to the modern superstructures of authentic Gothic part can be observed. According to historical sources, the basic sections of stone fortifications of Medieval Kazimierz were erected between 1362 and 1369.

    The article presents the territorial brand as a category that can be analyzed in a broader theoretical context of the presence of dominant symbols in local culture. The research data indicate that territorial marketing is a specific strategy for the design and implementation of cultural contents that can be used by local actors at the borderland. The town’s brand appears as an important component of the symbolic space of the local community and local practices. Adoption of marketing assumptions by local actors strengthens their belief that there is some set of professional practices which lead to strengthening the brand as a dominant symbol. The article points to specific examples of actions which show some local mechanism of applying or practicing the town’s brand. There is the great facility of recognizing various cultural contents as the potential town’s brands. Therefore, local actors imagine that practically all activities and symbols in the sphere of culture can be applied to the local brand. However, moving these contents to the level of common appreciation and recognizing them as branded dominant symbols is already very difficult. The achievement of such appreciation depends both on the nature of cultural content promoted as branded, the local environment in which the cultural content is promoted and the position of the institution promoting the brand in this environment. So there are more potential brands than real ones, which means that many symbols (cultural contents) that are indicated as brands do not have the character of dominant symbols.

    Artykuł przedstawia zarys zmian urbanistycznych z okresu PRL-u na Starym Mieście we Wrocławiu. Intensywne działania budowlane rozpoczęły się już pod koniec lat 40. XX w. Początkowo polegały głównie na rekonstrukcji zniszczonej zabudowy staromiejskiej, skoncentrowanej wokół Rynku i pl. Solnego. Od 1956 r. zaobserwować można powrót do idei przedwojennego modernizmu. Nowa architektura i urbanistyka miała być symbolem nowej organizacji życia społecznego oraz postępu technologicznego. W latach 70. i 80. XX w., pomimo ambitnych planów przekształcenia centrum Wrocławia w wielkomiejskie centrum usługowe, tempo inwestycji budowlanych zdecydowanie zmalało. Pod koniec epoki PRL, dzięki stopniowemu odejściu od gospodarki centralnie planowanej, znacznie wzrosła ilość zabudowy plombowej na Starym Mieście.
    The article is a short brief about urban changes in the Old Town in Wrocław during the Polish People’s Republic. Intensive rebuiliding activities have begun at the end of 1940’s. Historical buildings around the Main Square and Solny Square were the first to be reconstructed. However, since 1956 the return to pre-war modernism ideas has been observed. New architecture and urbanism were supposed to be a symbol of new social order and technological progress. Despite of ambitious plans of transforming Wrocław’s city centre into a modern downtown the pace of rebuilding of The Old Town dropped dramatically in the 1970’s and 1980’s. At the end of the communist era in Poland, thanks to the gradual departure from the centrally planned economy, the number of infill buildings in the Old Town has increased considerably.

    Therefore, the Czech Ore Mountains, represented an area where means of early modern wartime logistics had been fully applied. The collected contributions were subject to strict supervision and inventory on the side of the city or state officials, for which the documentary evidence is provided by the increasing bureaucratization of the early modern state. At that time the Ore Mountains as a link between Saxony and Bohemia were carrying a considerable (definitely not negligeable) degree of the war load.
    Rudawy Czeskie były obszarem, na którym w pełni zastosowano wczesną nowoczesną logistykę wojenną. Zebrane składki podlegały ścisłemu nadzorowi i inwentaryzacjom ze strony miasta lub urzędników państwowych, na co istnieją dowody w postaci dokumentów wytwarzanych przez rozbudowywaną biurokrację wczesnego nowoczesnego państwa. W tym czasie Rudawy, jako łącznik między Saksonią a Czechami, ponosiły obciążenie wojenne w znacznym stopniu.

    The article presents a description and edition of a foundation charter issued by Jerzy Iwanowicz Ilinicz for a church in Biała Podlaska. The information contained makes it possible to determine, among other things, a new date of the establishment of the parish or lists of patron saints. The charter also includes the oldest mention of Biała Podlaska as a town.

    In the ‘‘Trial of Mary and Joseph”, a play from the late fifteenth-century N-Town cycle, Mary and Joseph are tried for adultery and breaking a public oath. The trial is the result of an indictment brought about by the public rumour concerning the origins of Mary’s pregnancy and possibility that Joseph is not the father of the child. The setting of a contemporary fifteenth-century ecclesiastical court introduces a legal and procedural approach which cannot properly process such an extraordinary event as the miraculous origins of Mary’s pregnancy. As a result, Mary cannot be acquitted in accordance to the fifteenth-century regulations and a legal modification in the procedure must be implemented. However, a direct change would have a negative effect on the credibility of the play and the legal system it represents. Therefore, a subtle alteration is introduced: a transition from a strictly rational and commonsensical ecclesiastical ex officio trial to the common law trial by jury as outlined in the Assize of Clarendon, which legally utilized ordeal as a form of purgation. As a result, Mary could be legally acquitted, and the system’s credibility would not have suffered from an intentional and highly irregular alteration, while the audience of the play would have been assured that a medieval legal system could deal with cases even as extraordinary as a miraculous virgin birth. The argument will unfold through a detailed comparative study of both procedures, their similarities and disparities, presented in the context of the social and legal perceptions of a contemporary audience.

    The paper presents the research work which made in underground objects location along Town Walls from Water Tower to Knight's Tower in Bystrzyca Kłodzka. There were inventory control open basements under ten apartments houses, accommodations of old prison and Town Wall. All the underground objects was draw on the city map. There was realized detailed description of technical state with view, crosssections and photographic documentations. The realized work was part of city revitalizations plan.

    A Forgotten Town, the Village and Manor Zwanowo. Contribution to the Studies into Late Mediaeval and Modern Settlement Complex in Niedźwiedziny (Hamlet Dzwonowo), Administrative District Wągrowiec, Great Poland. The article presents a preliminary interpretation of vegetation dissimilarities recognized due to the analysis of an orthophotomap published on the Internet site www.geoportal.gov.pl. The dissimilarities in question, visible in the grounds of the village of Niedźwiedziny (hamlet Dzwonowo), administrative district Wągrowiec, Great Poland (Wielkopolska), have been construed as the remains of a unique mediaeval settlement complex: oval-shaped village, chartered town and a mediaeval (?) and modern manor. During visits to the abovementioned sites, the area of the old churchyard cemetery was traced. On the basis of the written sources, it has been established that Dzwonowo was the main centre of the joint properties owned by Dobrogost – Poznań voivode, and subsequently his descendants.

    We wstępie wymieniono przyczyny źródeł zagrożenia. Omówiono czynnik historyczno-cywilizacyjny (obecność wielokondygnacyjnego, podziemnego labiryntu komór i korytarzy drążonych w XIV-XVII w. do składowania towarów) oraz czynnik geotechniczny (podłoże z lessu, który uplastycznia się lub upłynnia w miarę nawadniania). Następnie opisano zakres programowy prac ratunkowych (roboty badawczo-poszukiwawcze, likwidacyjno-zabezpieczające i fundamentowe). Prace te realizowano z zaangażowaniem wykonawstwa górniczego, przy znaczącym udziale większości branż i sektorów budownictwa. Wycinkowym rezultatem tych prac jest podziemna trasa turystyczna "Podziemia Opatowskie". W osobnym rozdziale przedstawiono aspekt nakładu inwestycji oraz rolę koordynacji i nadzoru - w myśl metody Z-S. Wyjaśniono również istotę i znaczenie tej metody. Podsumowanie zawiera krótkie zestawienie wyników akcji z perspektywy 40 lat.
    Reasons of endargement were mentioned at the beginning of the article. In this part both historical (the presence of multi-storey, underground labyrinth with chambers and galleries, which were bored in XIV-XVII century in order to store articles of trade in them) and geotechnical (the loess ground which becomes plastic or liquid as the result of watering) aspects were discussed. Than the programme of rescue works (recognition, liquidation and protection operations) was described. Those works have been conducted by engaging the specialist of mining and building sectors. One of the result of those works is the underground touristic route. In another chapter the aspect of investors engagement and the role of coordination and supervision - in accordance with Z-S Method were described. This chapter explains the essence and meaning of the abovementioned method. Recapitulation presents the quantity results of action in perspective of 40 years.

    Immediately after the Second World War the religious services outside churches (perhaps the processions connected with Corpus Christi holidays) were not supressed by authorities. Their status was regulated on between war Act of 1932. The greatest of all processions in Corpus Christi holidays regularly rounded the town Square. But after 1960, the policy about catholic Church in Poland were more restricted. The parliament 29th of Mart 1962 edited the Assembles Law, which ordered that the religious assembles need had got especial permission from the local authority. At that time the processions were pushed to the side streets. Similar cases also took place in other localities of Wadowice county. This situation lasted until 1981, when the first “Solidarity” won a longer route of the Corpus Christi procession. Since 1990 after the basic political changes in Poland all religious assembles take place freely.

    W artykule przedstawiono geotechniczne i konstrukcyjne metody kompleksowego zabezpieczania Staromiejskiej Dzielnicy Opatowa. Opisano początkowe prace w tym zakresie oraz budowę geologiczną formacji lessowej występującej w rejonie Opatowa wraz z występującymi zagrożeniami w rejonie podziemnych obiektów. Przedstawiono również zakres prac badawczo-rozpoznawczych oraz zabezpieczająco-likwidacyjnych te obiekty. Opisano sposób zagospodarowania staromiejskich podziemi jako trasy turystycznej. Przedstawiono także podstawowe elementy Metody Z-S, stanowiącej schemat postępowania przy zabezpieczaniu staromiejskich dzielnic.
    The geotechnical and construction comprehensive methods of securing the old-town district of Opatów have been presented. The beginnings of securing works with the geological characterization of the loess formation occurring in the area of Opatów as well as hazards occurring in the area of the underground objects have been described. The scope of research and reconnaissance as well as security and liquidation of these objects was also presented. The method of developing the Old Town underground as an tourist route was described. Also the basic elements of the Z-S Method, which illustrates the procedure for securing old districts has been presented.

    The Amendment to the Education Act has introduced compulsory preschool education for children from the age of 5 and an obligation for the parents to register their child for such compulsory education.     Opis:
    Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie przemian struktury przestrzennej tzw. Nowego Miasta – jednej z dwóch historycznych części śródmieścia Mysłowic. Geneza tej przestrzeni sięga XIX wieku, gdy rozpoczął się jej rozwój funkcjonalno-przestrzenny w oparciu o funkcje graniczne oraz transport kolejowy (ważny węzeł międzynarodowy od 1847). Podstawowym źródłem informacji o stanie morfologicznym obszaru badań były archiwalne i współczesne plany miasta, przedstawiające Nowe Miasto w poszczególnych etapach jego ewolucji. Metodyka postępowania badawczego polegała na chronologicznym zestawieniu wybranych materiałów kartograficznych, zgodnie z metodą analizy planów miasta M.R.G. Conzena. Kolejny krok obejmował interpretację, weryfikację oraz analizę porównawczą treści planów poprzez ich nałożenie na siebie. Efektem badań była wizualizacja dynamiki przemian struktury przestrzennej obszaru badań w latach 1859–2013. Wyróżniono trzy fazy (stadia) rozwoju struktury przestrzennej Nowego Miasta: inicjalną (druga połowa XIX w.), maksymalnego wypełnienia urbanistycznego (początek XX w.) oraz regresu przestrzennego (początek XXI w.).
    The author’s aim was to present the spatial structure transformations within one of the old part of the Mysłowice city – Nowe Miasto (New Town). The genesis of this area dates back to 19th century, when its functional and spatial development connected with boundary functions and railway transport (an important international railway hub since 1847) was observed. Fundamental source concerning the morphologic state of Nowe Miasto are archival and contemporary town plans, showing different evolution stages of study area. Research procedure was based on chronological comparison of these cartographic materials, according to M.R.G. Conzen’s method. The next step of research included interpretation, verification and comparative analysis of the plans through their overlapping. The final result is visualization of spatial structure dynamics within the study area over the 1859–2013 period. Three phases of the spatial and functional development of Nowe Miasto urban space were identified: initial (second half of 19th cent.), culminate (early 20th cent.) and spatial regression (the are of 21th cent.).

    W pracy zaprezentowano badania dotyczące analizy studni miejskiej zlokalizowanej Na płycie rynku w Bieruniu. Z realizowane zostały w kontekście postrzegania jej jako elementu szczególnego w otoczeniu, posiadającego znamiona wyjątkowości i unikatowości wynikające z ważności i różnorodności wpisanych w nią treści – ideografii – które wpłynęły na jej powstanie. Ślady aktywności człowieka, zawierające się w jej strukturze funkcjonalno – przestrzennej, odczytano na następujących płaszczyznach: kultury, sztuki, historii, techniki oraz zmian zachodzących w środowisku przyrodniczym pod wpływem działalności człowieka i działań natury. Stwierdzono, że studnia jest wyróżnikiem miejsca lokalizacji, nośnikiem informacji historycznych i kulturowych. Jest obiektem małej architektury, który poprzez dominującą na niej grupę rzeźbiarską Utopców, w sposób zmaterializowany wprowadza w jedną z najważniejszych przestrzeni publicznych miasta – rynek – legendy i podania przekazywane z pokolenia na pokolenie. Może być także odbierana/odczytywana na płaszczyźnie swoistej syntezy, upamiętnienia nieistniejących i/lub zdegradowanych obiektów budowlanych oraz cech środowiska naturalnego i jego przekształceń.
    The publication presents an analysis of the urban well located in the town square in Bieruń. This analysis has been completed in the context of perceiving it as a special monument in the environment. The well has the character of exceptionality and uniqueness resulting from the importance and diversity of the inscribed content – ideography, which influenced its creation. The traces of human activity contained in its functional–spatial structure were analysed on the following levels: culture, art, history and technology. The above traces were also analysed as changes occurring in the natural environment under the influence of human activity and nature activities. It was found that the well is a distinguishing feature of the location, a carrier of historical and cultural information. It is an object of small architecture, which through its dominant sculptural group of ‘The Drowners’, visibly introduces into one of the most important public spaces of the city – the t own square. The legends and stories of ‘ The Drowners” are passed down from generation to generation. The well can also be perceived as a commemoration of non-existent and / or degraded buildings and the characteristics of the natural environment and its transformations on the level of specific synthesis.

    The article is an anthropological reconstruction of the microcosm of the Wrocław district called the Bermuda Triangle in the first half of the 1960s. The author describes a specifically small-town community and its space-time identity, largely free from the oppressive media practices of global culture remaining in the shadow of the Catholic type of religiosity. The culture of the Triangle at that time turned out to be a collection of urbanized behaviours as well as a type of slightly archaic, face-to-face private-public discourse, marking the coexistence of original communications placed in the collective field of view and preserved in collective memory. The basic principle organizing the notes of an anthropologist of the (photo)past is the analysis of relics and artefacts.

    W pracy zaprezentowano badania dotyczące analizy węzłów i punktów centralnych (knot) miasta Bieruń. Są nimi: kopiec, rynek, kościół pw. św. Walentego i plac św. Walentego. Można tutaj odnaleźć korzenie tożsamości społeczeństwa małego miasta i jego okolic. Bieruń historycznie położony jest na Górnym Śląsku, a dokładnie na Ziemi Pszczyńskiej. W 1387 roku otrzymał prawa miejskie. O rozwoju osady zadecydowały m.in. uwarunkowania środowiskowe oraz gospodarcze. Z historią istniejącego od początku XVI do początku XIX wieku Wielkiego Stawu Bieruńskiego oraz systemu rzek, potoków i małych stawów, wiążą się m.in. pozostałości zabytkowej Grobli oraz legendy o Utopcach – „stworokach bieruńskich”. Trwała obecność wspomnianych legend, podań, ich żywotność wśród – nie tylko dawnych – ale i współczesnych mieszkańców Bierunia i terenów przyległych, stoi u podstaw procesu wyłaniania się ludowej tożsamości w przestrzeni miasta. Niektóre z tych elementów wkomponowano w studnię miejską – zaprojektowaną i zrealizowaną na początku XXI wieku na bieruńskim rynku w miejscu nieistniejącej, historycznej studni. Tym samym wprowadzono w jedną z najważniejszych przestrzeni publicznych miasta – rynek – legendy i podania przekazywane z pokolenia na pokolenie. Wspomniana studnia stała się wyróżnikiem miejsca lokalizacji oraz nośnikiem informacji historycznych i kulturowych. Nie mamy tu zatem do czynienia ze zwykłym ozdobnikiem ale z materializacją idei wyrosłej z tkanki żywej społeczności. Jeszcze głębszym jej wyrazem jest umieszczony centralnie w przestrzeni rynku Pomnik Powstańców Śląskich, który na tej właśnie ziemi jest autentycznym wyrazem pamięci o poległych ojcach. Drugi, nawet ważniejszy poziom tożsamości kulturowej stanowi tutejsza głęboka religijność i kult świętego Walentego. Uznanie świętego Walentego za patrona miasta oraz podniesienie kościółka dn. 13.02.2015 roku do godności Sanktuarium stanowiło jedynie sformalizowanie istniejących przekonań religijnych. W jego sąsiedztwie powstał plac św. Walentego z centralnie zlokalizowaną kolumną świętego, będący niejako przedłużeniem miejsca kultu, a stanowiący zarazem uobecnienie postaci patrona w przestrzeni miasta. Wszystkie mogą być przykładem przekazu cząstki budującej tożsamość miasta. W 2016 roku Władze Miasta Bieruń podjęli uchwałę o utworzeniu Zespołu parków kulturowych. Nazwano je: „Park Kulturowy dla Obszaru Staromiejskiego” i „Park Kulturowy dla obszaru Grobli”.
    The publication presents analysis of the knots and focal points (knots) of the city Bieruń. They are: mound, Town Square with St. Bartolomeus church, St. Valentine’s church and St. Valentine’s Square. This is where we can find the roots of identity of society living in a small town and its surroundings. Historically, Bierun is located in Upper Silesia and Pszczyna region. Bierun was given municipal rights in 1387. The settlement started developing because of environmental conditions and economical conditions. The history of existing from the beginning of 16th until the beginning of 19th century, the Great Pond of Bierun, rivers, streams and small ponds is connected with residues of monumental dike as well as the legends of the Drowners – Bierun’s creatures. The presence of mentioned legends among previous and modern citizens of Bierun is the basis of a process creating country awareness in town’s area. Some of those elements are incorporated in city’s well – designed and made in the beginning of 21st century in the town’s market where historical well was located. This means that legends passed on from generation to generation became part of the most important area of the town. The well became an important indicator of historical and cultural information. Besides being just a simple decorative element, it is a materialization of an idea based on living society. The Silesian Insurgents’ Monument placed in the middle of town’s market is even greater example of living society, as in this area it is a true example of society’s memory of their killed fathers. The second, perhaps even more important level of cultural identity is local deep faith and cult of St. Valentine. It is a famous place of many miraculous recoveries as well as fiancés blessing. Recognizing St. Valentine as a patron saint of the town and the church as a sanctuary in 2015 was a proof of existing religious belief. In the vicinity of the church, authorities created St. Valentine’s square with his sculpture being an extension of the place of cult and a sign of patron saint presence in the town’s area. All they might be an example of an idea transfer, that creates town’s identity. In 2016 Bierun’s authorities undertook a decision of creating a set of cultural parks. They were named: “Cultural park for Old Town area” and “Cultural park for dike area”.

    The present article depicts the practice of holding office by two town notaries Władysław Łukaszewicz and Franciszek Waskielko in the small town of Knyszyn at the beginning of the 18th century. Franciszek Waskielko was a heir to Władysław Łukaszewicz but the former notary was committed to helping him out. A detailed analysis of the forms used by both notaries such as wills and contracts of sale points to the fact that Francizek Wa- skielko, while referring to forms used by his predecessor, was also capable of creating some new clauses. Most probably small-town notaries in the Polish-Lithuanian Com- monwealth who had not been formally educated in law at schools, gained professional knowledge during their work by reading court records and speaking with associates.

    Od 1942 roku w okupowanej przez Niemców Polsce, na polecenie Józefa Stalina, zaczęła działalność Polska Partia Robotnicza. Głęboko zakonspirowana, miała tworzyć polityczne zaplecze dla przejęcia władzy przez komunistów. PPR utworzyła swoje zbrojne ramię w postaci Gwardii Ludowej (Armii Ludowej), oficjalnie dla celów walki z Niemcami. Artykuł przedstawia historię jednej z grup GL o kryptonimie „Iskra”, która działała na terenie Rzeszowszczyzny. W tekście wykorzystano materiały źródłowe sporządzone już po wojnie. Wyłaniają się z nich dwa wizerunki „Iskry” propagandowy z czasów PRL, gloryfikujący komunistyczną partyzantkę, i rzeczywisty, oparty na wspomnieniach i zeznaniach świadków, według których „Iskra” była odpowiedzialna za wiele zbrodni dokonanych na Polakach oraz spowodowała niemieckie pacyfikacje wsi Przewrotne, Hucisko i Stobierna, w których ofiarami byli niewinni mieszkańcy. Podsumowując działalność „Iskry”, trzeba stwierdzić, że nie przyniosła ona żadnych korzyści, a stała się przyczyną tragicznych losów bezbronnych cywilów.
    The activity of the armed group Iskra in the Rzeszow region in the years 1942–1943 On the order of Joseph Stalin, Polish Workers’ Party was founded in Poland under German occupation in 1942. Deeply hidden, it was created as a political means of taking over by the communists. The party created its own armed force under the name People’s Guard (People’s Army), officially created in order to fight the Germans. This piece illustrates a story of one of such armed groups, code-named Iskra, which was active in the Rzeszow region. The source materials used in this article were compiled after the war. They depict two descriptions of Iskra, the propagandist take glorifying the communist guerilla warfare; and the factual one, formed on the basis of memories and testimonies of witnesses. According to these witnesses Iskra was responsible for many crimes committed against the Polish people, as well as being responsible for German pacifications of Przewrotne, Hucisko and Stobierna villages, where innocent people became the victims. To sum up the activities of Iskra, not only did it not bring any benefits, but it was also the cause of the tragic loss of helpless civilians.

    In the Czech literary scene, it is Jáchym Topol who may justly be labelled the author most consumed with Central Europe, one who is constantly attempting to decrypt the message encoded in its scars and wrinkles. His fictional treatment of Central-European themes is preceded by thorough knowledge of both the history and present state of the region. However, Topol is not merely a historian; in his fictionalising he uses a poetic, complex perspective, and arrives thus at a unique expression. Particular recurring figures in his literary work seem to answer in a riddle the questions of present-day Central Europe. First one of those is the biblical image of the field or of the pile of bones. In Topol’s writing, it represents both the systematic violence in Central-European history, and universal onus. The second recurring figure is the figure of a good-hearted headsman. In Topol’s prosaic and dramatic texts, the headsman embodies the ambivalence of the Czech national character, but also its survival strategies. It is intertextually linked to the works of Jaroslav Hašek, and brings the notion “Czechs are a Švejk-like nation” to its absurd, augmented consequences. The third figure which keeps returning in Topol’s work combines the features of a character and of a symbol. It is the figure of Madonna, representing the spiritual dimension of Central European tradition, bound to Christianity. The various Madonnas—the Polish Madonna of Częstochowa, the War Madonna in fictionalised modern-day Russia and eventually the Czech Madonna of Poříčí create the Christian counterworld in Topol’s novels, and signalize the persistent role and presence of spirituality in the region. In Topol’s novel Citlivý člověk it is actually thanks to this Madonna that the whole discourse opens to a new type of perspective.
    Na czeskiej scenie literackiej Jáchym Topol uchodzi za autora najbardziej zainteresowanego Europą Środkową, nieustannie rozszyfrowującego przekaz zapisany w jej bliznach i zmarszczkach. Jego stosunek do tematów środkowoeuropejskich w tekstach fikcyjnych jest zawsze oparty na pogłębionym zapoznaniu się z historią i współczesnością tego obszaru. Topol nie jest jednak historykiem: tworząc fikcję, wykorzystuje złożoną, poetycką perspektywę i osiąga autorski typ ekspresji artystycznej. Określone, powracające symbole i figury zdają się w zagadkowy sposób odpowiadać na współczesne pytania Europy Środkowej. Pierwszy z tych symboli to biblijny obraz doliny suchych kości. Reprezentuje on zarówno metodyczną przemoc w historii środkowoeuropejskiej, jak i uniwersalną odpowiedzialność. Drugi to typ postaci występującej w wielu utworach Topola: dobry kat. Uosabia on ambiwalencję czeskiego charakteru narodowego, ale również jego strategię przetrwania. Postać dobrego kata intertekstualnie łączy się z twórczością Jaroslava Haška – przyjęte powszechnie przekonanie, że „Czesi są narodem Szwejków”, zostaje doprowadzone do absurdu. Trzecim symbolem pojawiającym się w twórczości Topola jest postać Madonny, reprezentującej duchowy wymiar środkowoeuropejskiej tradycji związanej z chrześcijaństwem. Madonny – polska Matka Boska Częstochowska, wojenna Madonna w fikcyjnej współczesnej Rosji, czeska Madonna z Poříčí – tworzą chrześcijańskie „przeciw-światy”. Madonny sygnalizują niezastąpioną rolę duchowości w Europie Środkowej, jej rozwój i stałą obecność. W ostatniej powieści Topola, Citlivý člověk (wyd. polskie Wrażliwy człowiek, 2019), dzięki postaci Madonny dyskurs uzyskuje nową perspektywę.
