Opis:
The aim of the article is to raise and discuss, according to contemporary research findings, the most important reservations regarding the concept of sustainable (harmonious) tourism development as well as the barriers to the implementation of its principles in practice. The author points to ambiguities in the interpretation of the term ‘sustainability’ and, as a result, the methodological implications for tourism studies including the problem of measuring and evaluating ‘sustainability’ in tourism development processes. In addition it considers the social hostility towards limiting consumption in tourism and the growing climatic, economic and political instability at tourism destinations hindering its implementation of the concept of sustainability. In conclusion, the author proposes a new paradigm for sustainable tourism which does not directly relate to the imperative of harmonious interconnection between differing development goals and values in tourism.

This paper is an overview, and its aim is to identify published research works on tourism in Łódź and around the city as well as the tourism trips of the city’s inhabitants. This target allowed around 100 articles to be gathered which have been divided into eight thematic groups and analysed for merit. Their names are the titles of subchapters: the city’s tourism resources, land use planning, tourism space, the tourism activity of the citizens of Łódź, the tourism product – tourism development strategies, and tourism research of surrounding areas in the metropolitan area of Łódź. In the final part, the author divides the research into stages leading up to an explanation of the current development of research on Łódź and its metropolitan area and then suggests further research directions.

Opis:
Since XIXth century, with trail widespread, traveling has become more available, however a breakthrough ensued in XXth century, when labor unions had fought their chance to paid leave. It has become a drive shaft of tourism, which by the end of the century had proclaimed as a number 1 industry in the world. Tourism is an economic and spiritual hope for the world. Profits from it reach more than 500 billion dollars per year, not counting the income from flight tickets. In many countries tourism is the most important economy department - provides workplaces, stimulates infrastructure development. Lately, more often we can see a tendency of tourism individualization. Forecasts say, that they are about to change. A more specialized individual tourism is showing up next to the mass tourism, heading to cultural and natural penetration. Nowadays, a tourist is more experienced, often not discovering the world for the first time, but acknowledging his own knowledge. Mass tourism is still going to exist next to the individual tourism, with all of its economical advantages as well as with its destroying force. If there is no proper limitation and protection, areas on which mass tourism is developing would annihilate. Since decades, year by year, the number of tourists and income from tourism has been growing. A breakdown occurred in 2001 when economy of Germany, Japan and USA weakened and after 11th September. After this tragedy incomes decreased dramatically all over the world by 11%(worst in the Near East-30%). Many countries have taken actions in order to secure tourists, since it is the most important thing today. Tourists will not visit a place where there is no security.

Opis:
Epistemologiczna refleksja nad turystyką powinna z kolei ułatwić przejście do problematyki metodologii badań nad tą dziedziną.
In his article, the author presented his reflexions on the ontological and epistemological grounds for tourism research, which are an important part of their methodological characteristics. It seems that particularly in this field of studies on tourism there prevails a significant regress both in Poland and abroad. The author proposes an arranged on the theoretical grounds programme of research of tourism. As a starting point there is taken into account in it the ontological approach where there is postulated search of an answer to the basic question concerning the essence of tourism. Later on, he proposed adoption of the epistemological perspective concerning the possibilities and directions of scientific cognition of tourism – in the scope determined at the ontological level. Th e epistemological reflexion about tourism should, in turn, ease the shiftto problems of the methodology of research of this domain. It is considered that there is much to do in this area. In the so far carried out research, scientists have been often using the methods borrowed from other disciplines, with a simultaneous lack of more definite attempts to integrate them.

Globalisation in education sector, intense competition between universities in Latvia, increase in requirements of applied teaching from private companies, growing exactingness from students – it all makes base to improve University curricula using different active teaching techniques for better knowledge capture. In the case study of University of Latvia tourism study programme authors included practice of active teaching method application used to improve student understanding and competences including research, surveys, observations, shadowing, monitoring and register of the tourist tracks, expert interviews and industry seminars, discussions and interviews with industry stakeholders, field trips, different tourism sector enterprise and organisation visits inspections, colloquiums, research result presentations in seminars and conferences, knowledge enhancing for sustainability, best practices and systems used by other countries. Many of active learning methods are as additional activities for students not included in the compulsory part of studies, therefore it is needed to establish an additional separate entity for tourism and sustainability activities for applied teaching and research at university – Tourism and Sustainability Research Laboratory. Separate research entity gives possibility to involve interested students from different study programmes and cooperation with other faculties.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to verify the reliability and user-friendliness of some of the most popular ways of collecting information from respondents. The article provides a synthetic review of the use of various research methods and techniques, which is supplemented by results of the author’s own survey of 280 people who visited guest farms in rural areas of Mazowieckie province in 2019. The respondents found online and paper-based surveys the most user-friendly method while they rated telephone interviews as the least user-friendly. Asked to assess the reliability of data collection techniques, the respondents considered covert observation and mystery shopping to be the most reliable, while the telephone interview was regarded as the least trustworthy. The assessment of the user-friendliness and reliability of different data collection methods and techniques varied by gender, age and the level of education. It can be expected that insights from the study can help to improve the methodology of rural tourism research.

Artykuł podejmuje problematykę przestrzeni turystycznej zarówno w ujęciu subiektywnym (indywidualnym, percepcyjnym), jak i obiektywnym (z punktu widzenia miejsca obszaru jej występowania).
The author discusses the issue of tourism space both from a subjective (individual and perceptive) and an objective point of view (the place or area of occurrence). He also discusses types of tourism space as regards the territory they occupy as well as dynamically, as potential development phases for tourism space. As a result, he proposes a tourism space development cycle. In addition, the roles of different groups of tourism space 'actors' and the factors determining organizaUon and functioning of tourism space are described. The author further proposes a model research procedure aiming at a full description of tourism space.

Opis:
Research into tourism activity of seniors is a response to social changes taking place in European countries, including Poland. Because of ageing societies, senior tourism becomes an important and developing sector of the tourism market. The purpose of this study was to explore the travelling patterns of elderly people who are socially active in their day-to-day environment. Also, this study addressed some research problems which boil down to determining: how often do Polish seniors travel; what are the main reasons behind senior tourism; and how are their trips organized. This paper includes a literature review and presents findings from an empirical study based on a survey questionnaire administered to learners at the University of the Third Age of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences. Based on their research, the authors identified the need for stimulating social activity, including tourism activity of seniors. The respondents enjoyed taking part in organized domestic and international trips. Research also suggests that seniors had a preference for long (at least 5-day) trips, willingly used travel agency services, and enjoyed travelling by plane and staying in hotels.
Respondenci chętnie uczestniczyli w zorganizowanych wyjazdach krajowych i zagranicznych. Ponadto badania wskazują, iż seniorzy preferowali wyjazdy długookresowe, tj. minimum pięciodniowe, chętnie korzystali z usług biur podróży, transportu samolotowego oraz noclegów w hotelach.

The aim of the article is to identify research areas that are relevant from the perspective of management in the field of cross-border tourism. The analysis is based on bibliometric information included in the Web of Science and Scopus database. The main task of the analysis is to identify current problems in the field of cross-border tourism management, taking into account regional characteristics as well as forms and content of tourism services. The authors use bibliometric analysis supported by the VOSviewer software. In addition, the case study method is used to identify the most common features and tendencies in the study of cross-border tourism management. A review of the literature in the field shows that the management of tourism services in border regions is currently a new branch of management sciences, which has seen a dynamic growth as evidenced by the number of studies published since the middle of the first decade of the 21st century. Most of them analyse problems of cross-border tourism management in Europe, in the border regions of Germany, the Czech Republic, Spain and Portugal. The objectives of cross-border tourism management in this region are the background for sustainable development, harmonization of relationships at the regional level, concern for the state of the environment. One of the urgent problems is the management of health-related or medical cross-border tourism. A number of issues require more in-depth research, such as the management of transnational tourism services and products at the borders of the EU; European and world trends in the development of the tourism services market in the border regions; and the impact of cross-border tourism on local communities. The article’s contribution consists in providing a list of current problems in the study of cross-border tourism management and identifying research gaps in this field.

Łódź as a post-industrial city has great potential for post-industrial tourism. An attempt to utilise this has been the creation of the Łódź Industrial Architecture Trail, bringing together buildings related to its industrial past. According to the author, to make the trail a tourist attraction, the first people who should be aware of its value are the city’s inhabitants. The survey confirmed the very important role of social participation in creating the image of a city, and providing the basis for further work on its improvement and promotion. The article does not cover social participation as part of the process of development, but can serve as a contribution to a discussion of the role of a city’s inhabitants in shaping its tourism attractions. At the same time, the article confirms that social participation is an extremely important element of tourism research and forms an introduction to its effective use in practice.
