    The work aims to show the importance of photography in tourism and recreation promotion. A diagnostic survey in the form of a questionnaire was used to collect the test material. The group of respondents was positioned by tourists and travel agency employees. Analysis of research results has shown that photography is an inseparable part of the offers presented in tourist travels, which is therefore part of the promotion of tourism and recreation. For tourists and recreational is also an important issue, thanks to the pictures are offered interested in a given trip or recreation.

    Opis:
    Due to the development of social media, posting one's photos is becoming increasingly popular; they often take the form of, so called, ‘selfie’. The phenomenon of photographing oneself has also occurred in cultural institutions, including museums. The museums are implementing various strategies of reacting to people taking pictures of themselves with exhibits at the background. The article presents an analysis of these reactions, and, based on that, various ways of defining the functions and role of the contemporary museum. The author also attempts to provide an answer to the following question: is posting photographs by visitors an element of creating their own image (‘the Culture of Narcissism’), or is it rather a form of interaction with heritage, of a dialogue with the presented contents (‘remix culture’)?

    Opis:
    Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie możliwości wykorzystania w badaniach geograficznych jednej z metod socjologii wizualnej – analizy fotografii. W niniejszej pracy analizie poddane zostały wykonane przez turystów zdjęcia, które według nich najlepiej oddawały pobyt w Łodzi. Oprócz typowego dla badań socjologicznych odczytania treści fotografii, znaczeń oraz informacji o autorze, badanie zostało rozbudowane o aspekt przestrzenny, uwzgledniający miejsca wykonania fotografii i ich powiązania m.in. z lokalizacją najpopularniejszych atrakcji turystycznych miasta. W wyniku tej pracy powstała mapa, wyzna- czająca „przestrzeń turystyczną Łodzi” według kryterium wizualnego, która pokazuje jedną z możliwości wykorzystania analiz fotografii w badaniach geograficznych związanych z turystyką. W artykule zaprezentowano, jakie wyniki można otrzymać y zdjęć, wykorzystując cztery różne podejścia i metody interpretacji (strukturalistyczną, hermeneutyczną, semiologiczną oraz geograficzną).
    The aim of this paper is to present the possibility of using visual sociology method – photographic analysis – in geographical research. In this case study, the author analyzed photographs taken by tourists during their stay in Łódź which, according to them, “best reflect their stay in this city”. In addition to approaches typical for sociological research, the study was expanded by the spatial aspect including the places where the photographs were taken and their association with the most popular tourist attractions of the city. The outcome of this work is a map delineating the “tourism space of Łódź” (according to the visual criterion) which shows one of the possibilities of using analysis of photographs in geographical research. The paper presents the results that can be obtained from the analysis, using four different approaches and methods of interpretation (structuralist, hermeneutical, semiological and geographical).

    Opis:
    The intention of photography as a medium is to faithfully represent the reality (Barthes). However, given the advancement of photographic processes, particularly in the digitisation age, camera users are frequently reduced to involuntary executives of the will of algorithms whose opus operandi is no longer within our comprehension (Flusser). Alternative photography-focused movements are emerging that try to go beyond this mainstream. Their rebellion-inspired activities revolve around the search for the forgotten paths, both in the analogue photographic processes (e.g. paper negative, daguerreotype, talbotype) and optical systems reduced to a minimum (e.g. camera obscura). Their works are to provoke the viewer to focus on the surface of the photography rather than treat it as a transparent medium. This phenomenon is analysed in terms of post-tourism defined in opposition to the practices of mass tourism industry. The photographic projects discussed in this article (Decyk, Klupś, Krawiec, Sternak) reveal the potential of the ‘Antiquarian Avant-Garde’ (Rexer) in shifting the accents from must-sees and selfies to mindfulness-mediated personal travel experiences.
