Opis:
The research was carried out to verify the impact of incorrect care practices on the value of trees. The research was carried out on a fragment of a lime-tree alley, located on a local road connecting Wólka Świątkowa and Krynka in the Lublin province. One side of the alley has been subjected to abnormal cuts, exceeding 50% of the volume of the crown, while the other remains intact. For this purpose, an analysis of the impact of the applied treatments on the condition of trees on the Rollof scale, analysis of life prognoses using the SULE method and the analysis of tree values and the assessment of tree loss as a result of cuts ensuing from the use of incorrect treatments were conducted. The analyses confirmed that the use of incorrect cuts contributed to the decline in the value of trees. The loss is so large that 1/3 of damaged trees have no chance for long and safe; moreover, these trees have lost 68% of their value.

Opis:
In this work, the authors investigated the influence of proton-irradiation on the dark current of XBp longwave infrared InAs/GaSb type-II superlattice barrier detectors, showing a cutoff wavelength from 11 μm to 13 μm at 80 K. The proton irradiations were performed with 63 MeV protons and fluences up to 8∙10¹¹ H+/cm² on a type-II superlattice detector kept at cryogenic (100 K) or room temperature (300 K). The irradiation temperature of the detector is a key parameter influencing the effects of proton irradiation. The dark current density increases due to displacement damage dose effects and this increase is more important when the detector is proton-irradiated at room temperature rather than at cryogenic temperature.

Opis:
Consistent with our previous studies, we continue to evaluate the antioxidant potential of representatives belonging to the Papaveraceae family collected from the coastal region of northern Poland using different cell models, namely the muscle tissue of rainbow trout. Therefore, in the current study, oxidative stress biomarkers [2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), carbonyl derivatives of oxidative modification of proteins (OMP), total antioxidant capacity (TAC)] were used for evaluating the antioxidant activity of extracts derived from stalks and roots of Chelidonium majus L. (CM) at final dose 2.5 mg/mL. The muscle tissue of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum) was used in the current study. The supernatant of the muscle tissue was used to incubate with extracts derived from stalks and roots of CM (in a ratio of 39:1, final concentration 2.5 mg/mL) at room temperature. The control samples (muscle tissue) were incubated with 100 mM Tris-HCl buffer (pH 7.2) (in a ratio of 39:1). The results of the current study revealed that extracts derived from stalks and roots of CM exhibited cytotoxic effects on cellular structures of muscle tissue by increasing the level of lipid peroxidation and decreased of the total antioxidant capacity. These results suggest the possibility of using CM extracts at a final dose of 2.5 mg/mL for pro-oxidant effects and warrant further studies to evaluate their therapeutic potential. The levels of aldehydic and ketonic derivatives of OMP were significantly decreased after in vitro incubation with the extracts derived from stalks and roots of CM collected only from rural agglomerations. Screening of plants for other biological activities, including antioxidant activity, is essential and may be effective in the search for preventive measures in the pathogenesis of some diseases, as well as in the prevention and treatment of some disorders in human and veterinary medicine.

Opis:
Objectives The objective of the study was to reveal morphology, electrolyte and chosen biochemical parameters in terms of health risk in runners in reference to their age and running speed in the case of running a distance of 100 km, which occur after 12 h or 24 h of recovery. Material and Methods Fourteen experienced, male, amateur, ultra-marathon runners, divided into two age and two speed groups took part in the 100-km run. Blood samples for analyses indexes were collected from the ulnar vein just before the run, after 25 km, 50 km, 75 km and 100 km, as well as 12 h and 24 h after termination of the run. Results The sustained ultramarathon run along with the distance covered (p < 0.05) caused an increase in myoglobin (max 90-fold), bilirubin (max 2.8-fold) and total antioxidant status (max 1.15-fold), which also continued during the recovery. Significant changes in the number of white blood cells were observed with each sequential course and could be associated with muscle damage. The electrolyte showed changes towards slight hyperkalemia, but no changes in natrium and calcium concentrations. There were no significant differences between the age and speed groups for all the parameters after completing the 100-km run as well as after 12 h and 24 h of recovery. Conclusions Considering changes in blood morphology and chosen biochemical parameters in ultra-marathon runners during a 100-km run it can be stated that such an exhausting effort may be dangerous for human health due to metabolic changes and large damage to the organs. Negative metabolic changes are independent of age of an ultramarathon runner and occur both in younger (32±5.33 years) and older participants (50.56±9.7 years). It can be concluded that organ damage and negative metabolic changes during a 100-km run occur similarly in participants less experienced as well as in well trained runners.
