Opis:
Introduction and aim. Atypical or mixed presentations of neurodegenerative disorders may postpone or confound the final diagnosis. Molecular imaging with positron emission tomography (PET) and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) radioligands provide target-specific information and may anticipate the diagnosis by “in vivo” detection of the neuropathological substrate, as Aβ deposition, nigrostriatal dopaminergic depletion or tau inclusions. This concise review will discuss the potential of PET and SPECT imaging as a solid guide to better characterize atypical phenotypes of neurodegeneration in the clinical routine, with the potential to drive personalized interventions, improve cohort uniformity for clinical trials, and serve as biomarkers for targeted molecular therapies. Material and methods. Literature search was performed focusing on the role of PET and SPECT imaging in assessing atypical phenotypes of neurodegeneration, using the electronic source of database PubMed/MEDLINE and the web-based search engines Google, Google Scholar. Analysis of the literature. New disease-modifying drugs may increase their effect with early initiation, which is especially important in working persons and younger subjects presenting atypical symptoms. In older individuals, the coexistence of neurodegeneration, age-related changes, cerebrovascular lesions, or depression makes challenging a definitive diagnosis. Quantitative tools able to measure tracer distribution increase the accuracy of molecular neuroimaging creating topographic maps that compare subject’s data with healthy controls databases. Conclusion. Atypical phenotypes may be associated with quantitative key-pattern allowing a more precise and early diagnosis of the neurodegenerative disorder. Finally, quantitative assessment of the pathological substrates allows us to track the disease process and measure treatment response.

Opis:
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging has become a useful tool in medical diagnosis over the past 25 years, because of its ability to visualize intracellular structures at high resolution. The main objective of this work is to add electronic feedback to the optical coherence tomography setup to increase its sensitivity. Noise added to the measured interferogram obscures some details of examined tissue layered structure. Adjusting signal power level in such a way to improve signal-to-noise ratio can help to enhance image quality. Electronic feedback is added to enhance system sensitivity. A logarithmic amplifier is included in the OCT setup to automatically adapt signal level. Moreover, the resolution of the optical spectrum analyzer is controlled according to the farthest layer detected in the A-scan. These techniques are tested showing an improvement in obtained image of a human nail.

Opis:
This review article presents an analysis of 36 scientific papers focusing on modern three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction techniques in computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for their applications in medical diagnostics. The objective of this review is to present the current state of knowledge regarding the development and utilization of 3D reconstruction techniques, as well as to identify key trends and challenges in this field. The first part of the study focuses on the advancements in MRI and CT. The analysis reveals the major trends in the evolution of these diagnostic methods, such as increased accessibility of CT and MRI examinations for patients, reduced scan duration, greater utilization of artificial intelligence, and expanded applications in interventional radiology. The second part of the article highlights the potential and effectiveness of 3D modelling in diagnostic imaging. Creating 3D models of anatomical structures is a complex and multi-step process. Through the review, it was determined that 3D models derived from MRI can be equally accurate and diagnostically valuable compared to the more commonly used CT-based reconstructions. In the future, fusion imaging of MRI/CT is expected to play an increasingly significant role in orthopaedic imaging. The review demonstrates the significant potential of 3D modelling in diagnostic imaging. However, further research is still required to better understand the capabilities of 3D modelling in diagnosing complex anatomical structures. The integration of information technology in medicine will be crucial in advancing this field.
Tworzenie trójwymiarowych modeli struktur anatomicznych to złożony i wieloetapowy proces.

Introduction and aim. This study aims to estimate the age of a population in Central India by analyzing the mental foramen using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). The objectives of the study are to determine the parameters for age determination and study bilateral variations in mental foramen dimensions using CBCT. Material and methods. One hundred and twenty CBCT scans, HD LED monitor, GALAXIS GALLIEOS viewer. Results. Results from the study show significant values for various parameters such as the upper and lower borders of the mandible and mental foramen. Bilateral variations were also observed. The age regression model indicates a significant correlation between estimated and original ages for individuals aged between 31 to 50 years. While the study only analyzed five parameters of the mental foramen, it suggests that a more comprehensive assessment of mental foramen parameters with a larger sample size can yield more definitive results for age determination. Conclusion. As only five parameters of mental foramen had been assessed in this retrospective study, so a comprehensive assessment of various other parameters of mental foramen with an increased sample size may be done for more definitive results for gender and age determination.

Opis:
Ever since its introduction, computed tomography has come a long way. No longer is it merely a method that is used in clinical diagnostics, but it is becoming more and more popular among palaeontologists because it can be used to analyse both external and internal structures of fossil remains, such as small insects, snail shells and plant remains. The present study describes non-destructive analyses of Late Cretaceous and early Holocene charophyte gyrogonites by using the micro-CT technique, from sample preparation (embedding, fixing) to visualisation and assessment of images obtained. In addition to this non-destructive examination, we wished to test whether or not computed tomography could be used to examine the gyrogonites. Our preliminary results have made it clear that the micro-CT technique is worth employing for further research. It has proved possible to visualise the samples in 3D, rotate them, and observe them from different directions. By using the appropriate parameters, we have also been able to observe density differences between parts of characean remains and to study several important defining features of these.

The research paper presents the concept of secondarily multimodal work, which problematizes the status of e.g.: visual elements added to further editions of an initially monomodal text in the context of its interpretation. This issue is discussed using the example of Bronka Nowicka’s volume To Feed a Stone (2015; 2017), which was expanded in the second edition with photographs and tomographs of the objects described. The analysis shows that some added graphic elements break up the coherence of the narrative and both reinforce and undermine the mimesis in the work. They function based on the principle of a Derridean supplement: they complement and condition the content of the verbal passages. The article concludes with a study of art volumes that are part of Nowicka’s intermedia project focusing on exploring the relationship between image and memory.

A numerical study and simulation of breast imaging in the early detection of tumors using the photoacoustic (PA) phenomenon are presented. There have been various reports on the simulation of the PA phenomenon in the breast, which are not in the real dimensions of the tissue. Furthermore, the different layers of the breast have not been considered. Therefore, it has not been possible to rely on the values and characteristics of the resulting data and to compare it with the actual state. Here, the real dimensions of the breast at three-dimensional and different constituent layers have been considered. After reviewing simulation methods and software for different stages of the PA phenomenon, a single suitable platform, which is commercially available finite element software (COMSOL), has been selected for simulating. The optical, thermal, elastic, and acoustic characteristics of different layers of breast and tumor at radiated laser wavelength (800 nm) were accurately calculated or obtained from a reliable source. Finally, by defining an array of 32 ultrasonic sensors on the breast cup at the defined arcs of the 2D slices, the PA waves can be collected and transmitted to MATLAB software to reconstruct the images. We can study the resulting PA wave and its changes in more detail using our scenarios.

Opis:
During the construction of a section of the S-7 Lubień – Rabka-Zdrój dual expressway, located in the area of the Carpathian flysch (Carpathian Flysch Belt, South Poland), damage to the embankment was observed, as well as cracks and depressions in the new pavement. An analysis of the geological and engineering conditions in the area of the road section under construction showed the existence of a complex tectonic structure of the flysch formations, a shallow groundwater table, and numerous landslides. In order to stabilize the road substrate, it was decided to carry out injections, and the locations of these injections were initially geotechnically tested. However, due to the high variability of the geological structure, the target method employed was electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), which performed the survey in two stages. In Stage I, the geoelectrical/geochemical structure of the near-surface zone was identified, and the probable causes of road damage were indicated. This stage was completed by performing the stabilization and sealing process of the ground with an injection mixture. In Stage II, studies were carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the injection process. The ERT method effectively identified the shallow geological structure and, in particular, delineated the zone of strong fractures in the flysch and areas associated with faults. Using the electrical resistivity tomography method, it was also possible to determine the injection mixture’s approximate penetration depth and the loosening zone’s degree of filling.

Objective: to present and to illustrate a new methodology for daily practice in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) interpretation and reporting in cleft lip palate (CLP) non syndromic paediatric patients. The proposed protocol is based on clinical experience and on systematic search of the literature. Material and methods: We performed two types of systematic search of articles: 1) articles related to the use of CBCT in CLP patients, and 2) articles related to the reporting and interpretation of the CBCT images by radiologists. We used two databases PubMed and Google scholar. Results: For indications of CBCT in CLP patients we found in PubMed 378 articles and 48 articles were selected for the review; in Google scholar we found 463 articles, and 9 articles were selected for the review. 2) For reporting in CBCT we found 956 articles in PubMed, and 9 articles were selected for the review. Conclusions: We presented the 6-steps system for interpretation and reporting information from CBCT of CLP paediatric patients: 1) Step 1 (axial view): presence or absence of bone bridge remnants of alveolar bone graft; Step 2 (3D dental tissue reconstruction): description of dental arch tooth by tooth, search for agenesis and supernumerary teeth, description of variation in the position of the tooth explaining the type of existing translation and rotation; Step 3 (coronal view): cleft palate pathway and its extension; anomaly in maxillary, ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses if existing; Step 4 (sagittal and coronal view): checking of the opening (calcification sites) of the sphenooccipital synchondrosis, and checking of anomalies of the occipital bone; Step 5 (3D bone tissue reconstruction): C1-C2 vertebra anomalies; Step 6 (3D soft tissue reconstruction): external ear anomalies. We illustrated our methodology with 46 figures from 5 CBCT of CLP patients.

Introduction and aim. Computed tomography severity index (CTSI) and Balthazar score are among the most frequently used scorings in the determination of severe acute pancreatitis. The primary purpose of this study is evaluation of the effects of biochemical parameters, Balthazar score and CTSI on mortality in acute pancreatitis. At the same time, correlations with biochemical parameters, CTSI and Balthazar score were evaluated in patients with AP. Material and methods. In this study, the amylase, lipase, CRP, and procalcitonin values of patients diagnosed with acute pancreatitis were retrospectively recorded. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) images obtained at the time of presentation to the emergency department or within seven days of admission were re-evaluated by two radiologists. The CTSI scores and Balthazar scores of the patients were calculated. Results. The study included 240 patients. The amylase level of the patients was positively correlated with the Balthazar score at a statistically significant level (R=0.189, p=0.003). In addition, the relationship between pancreatic scoring systems and mortality, the AUC value for CTSI was 0.9 (95% CI: 0.826-0.973) and was higher than other scoring systems. Conclusion. CTSI had better performance in the prediction of mortality in patients with acute pancreatitis.

The article presents a new concept for monitoring industrial tank reactors. The presented concept allows for faster and more reliable monitoring of industrial processes, which increases their reliability and reduces operating costs. The innovative method is based on electrical tomography. At the same time, it is non-invasive and enables the imaging of phase changes inside tanks filled with liquid. In particular, the hybrid tomograph can detect gas bubbles and crystals formed during industrial processes. The main novelty of the described solution is the simultaneous use of two types of electrical tomography: impedance and capacitance. Another novelty is the use of the LSTM network to solve the tomographic inverse problem. It was made possible by taking the measurement vector as a data sequence. Research has shown that the proposed hybrid solution and the LSTM algorithm work better than separate systems based on impedance or capacitance tomography.

Opis:
This paper presents the research results on the design of a three-dimensional head phantom for cone beam projection. The head model is based on a Shepp-Logan mathematical head model, which is used to simulate the operation of the CT scanner. The model is then compared with the reference data for structural similarity, reasoning, and shape. The geometric parameters of the obtained images are investigated. The reconstructed image is analyzed using the FDK method. The results show that the geometric parameters directly correlate with the number of projections. A mathematical framework of cone beam 3d reconstruction via the first derivative of the radon transform is presented.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań nad projektem trójwymiarowego fantomu głowy do projekcji wiązki stożkowej.
