Opis:
Based on the amount and duration of external temperature, degree day values are determined according to whether the selected equilibrium temperature is lower or higher than the air temperature. Degree day values are calculated according to the fluctuations in ambient temperature. It can be understood whether heating or cooling systems are necessary within the calculated periods. In this study, the meteorological data of Antalya region dating back many years and the temperature values suggested according to the cultivation periods of tomato in greenhouse environment have been used as material. The daily average temperature values recorded for many years have been compared with the equilibrium temperature values selected for the tomato plant thereby calculating the heating and cooling day values for each cultivation period. Tomato cultivation in greenhouses is carried out in 2 periods in the region in spring and autumn. At the end of these two periods, it was determined that the heating degree days in autumn were determined to be higher than that in spring. Whereas cooling degree days were determined to be greater for autumn cultivation in comparison with that of spring cultivation. Information regarding the energy consumption of an agricultural structure can be obtained beforehand via the heating and cooling degree day values. It has been surmised that such studies will help in making estimations regarding the energy need of various agricultural structures as well as gaining insight in the planning of the design stages that are directly related to the energy consumption of the building such as heating, cooling and ventilation.

Effects of the phosphorus content in a nutrient solution (15 or 50 mg P dm-3), growing substrate (rockwool or coconut fiber) and the plant growth stage (for roots: 71 or 113 days after transplanting DAT; for leaves: 71 or 92 DAT) on the chemical composition of roots, the phosphorus content in leaves and the expression of genes encoding proteins involved in the transport of phosphorus from the medium to the plant were investigated in tomato cv. Admiro F1 grown in a foil tunnel. A fertigation system without recirculation was used. Regardless of the plant age and growing substrate, tomatoes fertilized with a nutrient solution containing 50 mg P dm-3 had more phosphorus, iron, boron and copper in roots and more phosphorus in leaves. Irrespective of the stage of plant growth and phosphorus level in the medium, the content of almost all macro- and microelements was higher in roots of plants grown in rockwool than in coconut fiber. The stage of plant growth significantly affected the mineral composition of roots as well as the P content in tomato leaves. More phosphorus was stored in roots of younger plants, whereas the phosphorus content was lower in younger than in older leaves. Our analysis of the gene expression showed that transporters encoded by LePT1-LePT4 were involved in phosphate nutrition. Expression of the genes was generally (except LePT4) higher in plants treated by the solution containing 15 mg P dm-3 than in plants treated by 50 mg P dm-3. The expression of genes LePT2, LePT3 in roots of older plants (113 DAT) was generally higher than in young plants.

We examined the response of maturing tomato fruit exposed for 7 days to fluridone (1-methyl-3-phenyl-5-[3-trifluoromethyl(phenyl)]-4(1H)-pyridinone). Fluridone was applied in lanolin paste in the form of a 2–3 mm wide strip from the top to the base of the fruit. As a control, a similar stripe of lanolin was applied in the same way on the opposite side of the same fruit. The content of major carotenoids, as well as flavonoids, and free and bound phenolic acids were determined using a HPLC and HPLC-MS-MS methods. Fluridone almost completely blocked the biosynthesis of lycopene and substantial declined content of ß-carotene and lutein in the tomato fruit. The fluridone caused a decreased content of quercetin, rutin and naringenin, and increased level of epicatechin. The herbicide did not affect the content of p-coumaric acid, but reduced the level of caffeic acid, both free and ester form, and declined the content of free ferulic and chlorogenic acids. Changes in phenolics composition observed for the first time indicate that fluridone interferes with the biosynthesis of further products of the metabolism of p-coumaric acid, both flavonoids and phenolic acids.

Opis:
Tomato though a day neutral crop, is predominantly cultivated during the cool dry harmattan partly due to low incidence of diseases and favourable low temperature. The scarcity of fresh tomato outside this season needs to be considered to meet the teeming demand of the populace. Knowledge of the nature of association between yield and its components is of great necessary in any breeding programme. It was against this background that a field experiment was conducted in 2008 and 2009 at Salam Farm of Ngaburari village of Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State (Lat. 12°N and Long. 13°13’E) in the Semi-Arid Region of Nigeria to determine the relationship between yield and other agronomic parameters as affected by mulching and cultivars of tomato (Lycopersicon lycopersicum L. Karst) during the heat period to provide effective tool for breeders. The treatments consisted of five cultivars of tomato (Tandino, Danbaga, Roma VF, UC82B and Dansyria) and six grass mulch (Pennisetum pedicelatum Trin) levels (0 t/ha, 2.5 t/ha, 5 t/ha, 7.5 t/ha, 10 t/ha and 12.5 t/ha) which were laid out in a strip-plot design and replicated three times. The parameters studied include plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, leaf area index, number of branches per plant, days to first and 50 % flowering, number of fruits, weight of fruits per plant and yield in t/ha. Data collected were subjected to Correlation Analysis using Statistic 8.0 and the results of the combined years for cultivars indicated that total fruits yield was significantly and positively correlated with plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, leaf area index, days to first flowering and weight of fruits but significantly negatively correlated with days to 50 % flowering. Similarly, correlation of parameters as affected by mulch indicated significant and positive correlation of fruit yield with plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, leaf area index days to first flowering, number of fruits and weight of fruits but significantly negatively correlated with number of branches and days to 50 % flowering. Days to first flowering had significant positive correlation with days to 50 % flowering, number of fruits and weight of fruits both as affected by cultivar and mulch. Hence selection for high yield during heat period in the semi arid region of Nigeria should be based on earliness to flowering.

Iron deficiency is a major nutritional disorder in crops. Inorganic Fe-compounds and synthetic Fe-chelates are commonly used to control chlorosis but their use arise environmental concerns. We recently developed a new iron fertilizer using a β-cyclodextrin-based nanosponge complex (Fe-NS). In this study, a pilot trial was performed on hydroponically cultivated horticultural plants in order to evaluate the effect of Fe-NS. Sweet corn and tomato were used as model plants analyzing chlorophyll, dry matter and Fe content. Fe-NS effect was compared to FeSO4 and Fe-DTPA. Fe-NS had a positive effect on re-greening and growth in sweet corn and tomato plants.
Wpływ Fe-SN porównano z FeSO4 i FeDTPA. Fe-NS miał pozytywny wpływ na nowe zazielenienie oraz wzrost roślin słodkiej kukurydzy i pomidora.

Opis:
Experimental cucumber and tomato plants were cultivated under glasshouse conditions with or without PGPR. Young plants were infested with spider mites (T. urticae - cucumber and T. cinnabarinus - tomato). Leaves were analysed for protein and amino acid concentration. In infested leaves of the cucumber cultivar, susceptible to spider mites (Corona), an important decrease in protein content occurred in both bacterized and nonbacterized plants. Amino acid content was higher in mile infested leaves and the presence of PGPR did not influence this phenomenon. The content of proteins was also studied in the leaves of the less susceptible cucumber cultivar (Aramis). Spider mile feeding caused a small decrease in their concentration. The presence of bacteria in the root system caused an increase of soluble proteins in the leaves. In infested leaves of the highly susceptible tomato cultivar (Romatos), cultivated without bacteria, an evident increase of amino acid content was found opposite to plants with PGPR. The protein concentration was also increased in injured leaves of this cultivar but the presence of bacteria in the root system of mite infested plants caused a decrease of these compounds in their leaves. lnjured foliage of the less susceptible tomato cultivar (Sionka) had a lower protein concentration in bacterised plants as compared to those nonbacterised and both controls.
Rośliny ogórka i pomidora uprawiano w warunkach szklarniowych, w obecności bakterii sfery korzeniowej (PGPR) i bez bakterii. Młode rośliny porażano przędziorkami (Tetranychus urticae Koch - ogórek i Tetranychus cinnabarinus Boisduval - pomidor).

Opis:
The influence of PGPR on the susceptibility of glasshouse cucumber and tomato to spider mites was studied. lt was found that plants treated with PGPR suppressed the development of mile populations on both studied crops. The effect was more evident for cucumber, as compared to tomato plants. Mite population was smaller by more than 40% on the leaves of the susceptible cucumber cultivar, Corona growing in the presence of rhizobacteria, as compared to that without bacteria. The development of spider mile population on the bacterized susceptible tomato cultivar, Romatos was more inhibited on young leaves (43%) than on older ones (34%). As the injury of plants progressed the level of inhibition was decreased.

Opis:
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the antibacterial properties of a plant secondary metabolite - caffeine. Caffeine is present in over 100 plant species. Antibacterial activity of caffeine was examined against the following plant-pathogenic bacteria: Ralstonia solanacearum (Rsol), Clavibacter michiganesis subsp. sepedonicus (Cms), Dickeya solani (Dsol), Pectobacterium atrosepticum (Pba), Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum (Pcc), Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato (Pst), and Xanthomonas campestris subsp. campestris (Xcc). MIC and MBC values ranged from 5 to 20 mM and from 43 to 100 mM, respectively. Caffeine increased the bacterial generation time of all tested species and caused changes in cell morphology. The influence of caffeine on the synthesis of DNA, RNA and proteins was investigated in cultures of plant pathogenic bacteria with labelled precursors: [3H]thymidine, [3H]uridine or 14C leucine, respectively. RNA biosynthesis was more affected than DNA or protein biosynthesis in bacterial cells treated with caffeine. Treatment of Pba with caffeine for 336 h did not induce resistance to this compound. Caffeine application reduced disease symptoms caused by Dsol on chicory leaves, potato slices, and whole potato tubers. The data presented indicate caffeine as a potential tool for the control of diseases caused by plant-pathogenic bacteria, especially under storage conditions.

The present study was conducted to determine the quantitative effects of light and temperature on growth and development of organic tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) seedlings in a glasshouse under ecological conditions of Samsun Province of Turkey. Seedlings were grown in four different periods (seeds sown on 29 September for 1st period; 2 December for 2nd period; 18 March for 3rd period and 6 July for 4th period). In order to create different light intensities, shading material having a shading capacity of 50% in 1, 2 and 3 layers was used in each period after seeding. The effects of light and temperature on plant growth and development (leaf area, stomatal conductivity, leaf chlorophyll content, plant height, stem diameter and total plant vegetative dry weight) and the number of days from sowing to plantation of seedlings, were investigated. Obtained results revealed decreasing number of days from sowing to seedling plantation with increasing light intensities. Finally, the number of days from sowing to seedling plantation to be used in organic tomato seedling production was modeled based on the variations in temperature and light intensity (r2 = 0.92).

Opis:
Salt stress is known as one of the most severe abiotic factors limiting the plant production all over the world. In this study, three additives: (i) supplemental Ca (5 mmol L–1) to nutrient solution, (ii) foliar application of micronutrients (Fe, Mn and Zn at 60, 160 and 110 mg L–1, respectively), and (iii) combination of both of them were evaluated aiming to reduce the negative impact of salt stress on tomato plants cultivated in a soilless culture and improve the internal quality of fruits. The obtained results show that salinity reduced vegetative growth and physiological parameters, fruit yield and its components, and even more lowered fruit market classification of tomatoes. Salinity treatment reduced most of essential macro- and micronutrients in tomato fruit, whilst Na content was increased. Tomato productivity and fruit quality were ameliorated under saline conditions by increasing Ca into nutrient solution and applying a foliar application of micronutrients. A combination of both additives ranked the first to alleviate the adverse effects of salinity on tomatoes, followed by solo supplemental Ca into saline nutrient solution. On the other hand, the internal fruit quality of antioxidant compounds, such as vitamin C, lycopene, α-carotene, β-carotene and lutein as well as acidity, total soluble solid and dry matter percent, were increased under saline conditions.
