Opis:
In the present study the impact of need for cognitive closure (NFC) manipulations via time pressure and explicit closure goal activation on executive control was investigated. Although there is some evidence that NFC, measured as an individual variable, is related to better performing in attentional tasks involving executive control, these results have never been validated across different manipulations of NFC. Thus, in the present study we induced NFC via internal and external time pressure and tested the impact of these manipulations on the performance in tasks that measure executive control, i.e., the Stroop and switching tasks. The results revealed that induced high (vs. low) NFC, indeed boosted performance in executive control tasks. Moreover, there was no difference in the effect of both NFC manipulations on task performance. The implications regarding the role of executive control and specific NFC manipulations in social cognition are discussed.

Challenging job demands are those which require the use of high energy and thus may impair health but bring positive consequences too. The present study aimed to construct a measure for challenging job demands for university teachers. Methods: The study is based upon the model developed by Makhdoom and Malik (2018) which proposed three challenging job demands including Regulatory Load, Social Load, and Cognitive Demands. On the basis of the literature review, Time Pressure was also studied as a factor. First of all, the authors created an initial item pool of 19 items which were categorized into four factors. The finalized item pool was administered on two independent samples drawn from various universities of Pakistan. In the first stage, the university teachers (N = 201) from three universities of the Punjab province were approached. EFA concluded three-factor and 13 items, which were then administered upon a sample of university teachers (N = 600). Results: The CFA confirmed the three-factor structure of challenging job demands including Time Pressure, Cognitive Demands and Social Load. All the fit indices were within an acceptable range. The values of factor loadings and Cronbach Alpha justified the internal consistency and psychometric soundness of the newly developed measure. Discussion: The study concludes a psychometrically sound scale to measure challenging job demands in university teachers which will be helpful in future studies. The limitations of the study along with suggestions for future research and important theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Opis:
A theoretical ballistic analysis of tubular rocket propellants burning in the progressive mode was carried out with the objective of ascertaining the effects of the burning rate index on the average pressure and the total burning time of the pressure time profiles. A constant ‘H’ is introduced to obtain close-form expressions for the initial pressure, the maximum pressure, the area under the pressure time profile, the total burning time and the average pressure. The derivation of the total burning time for a progressive burning tubular rocket propellant is a new approach described in this paper. It is observed that the average pressure during propellant combustion varies with the burning rate index. A higher burning rate index of the propellant leads to a lower average pressure for lower burning rate propellants (8 mm/s at 7 MPa) and a higher average pressure for higher burning rate propellants (10 mm/s at 7 MPa). A unique situation occurs for an intermediate burning rate propellant (9 mm/s at 7 MPa), where the maximum pressure was obtained theoretically for a specific value of the burning rate index (0.69).

Opis:
Dotyczy to szczególnie pierwszej fazy zjawiska.
Transient flow with water hammer characteristics is not a common occurrence in pressure systems. However, its effects can lead to serious problems in the management of pressure networks. This complex phenomenon is influenced by several factors. One of them is the impact of the pressure wave downstream of the valve that enforces the phenomenon. This involves concurrent excitation of pressure waves with opposite signs in the upstream and downstream conduit. The research confirmed significant influence of the downstream pipeline length on the hydraulic impact parameters. In particular, this applies to the primary phase of the phenomenon. The effect of the pipeline length on delay of the phenomenon was demonstrated, namely on the time between the start of the valve closure and start of the pressure increase. Furthermore, the pipe length influenced the time of pressure increase and the value of pressure increments. For equal lengths of the pipe upstream and downstream of the valve, delays in the pressure increase were the smallest. The biggest delay time values were observed in the extreme valve positions – near the beginning or the end of the pipe. For a simple water hammer, the measured values differed slightly from those calculated from the Joukovsky formula. For non-simple (complex) impacts, the variations between the pressure increases obtained for different pipe lengths reached up to 40%.

Opis:
Discharge measurement using the pressure-time (Gibson) method typically involves mounting measurement instrumentation on the outside of the penstock. In the case of a hydropower plant where the penstock is built over concrete, an innovative approach is necessary in order to install instrumentation inside the penstock. Such instrumentation has been implemented for the purpose of efficiency tests of the upgraded small Kaplan turbine. The pressure-time method, in its classic version, requires sending pressure signals from both penstock cross-sections to the differential pressure transducer by means of connecting tubes. This raises the question on the influence exerted by dynamic properties of the connecting pipes/transducer system on the discharge measurement results. Calculations carried out using previously developed method enable authors to demenstrate that the connecting pipes/transducer system had exerted a negligible influence on the discharge measurement results.

Opis:
In course of over half a century the test teams of the Szewalski Institute of Fluid-Flow Machinery (IMP PAN) have conducted numerous performance tests of small hydropower (SHP) installations on various occasions and motivations, including updating or establishing performance characteristics of old machines, acceptance of new units, checking or optimising the cam correlation of new or refurbished double-regulated turbines, checking performance of prototype turbines under field conditions. The discharge measurement techniques have included currentmeter, pressure-time and acoustic methods. Index tests, using the Winter-Kennedy and other differential pressure methods, as well as current-meter and acoustic techniques, have been employed quite frequently to optimise the cam curves of double-regulated machines. In one case a simplified technique based solely on the power/wicket gate opening relationship was checked. This paper discusses some techniques applied when determining the absolute efficiency and optimizing cam correlations by means of absolute and index test methods. Cubic spline formulae as applied to integrate the flow velocity field in a hydrometric section are derived. Results of a discharge measurement by means of the current-meter and pressure-time method are compared as a special case study. Finally, practical recommendations addressed both to the power plant owners and the test team members are formulated.

The paper emphasizes the role of linguistic intuition in current L2 processing. Intuition, as a mental disposition operating in implicit systems, is in close correlation with working memory. It infers quick, almost immediate meaning of un unknown word which appears in a context. Linguistic intuition has a regulatory function, i.e. it allows to continue language activities and overcome linguistic deficits. In the second part, Timed inference test as a tool for developing and testing vocabulary is proposed as well as the results of the empirical study on intuitive behaviour in L2. The results of the study show that inference of word’s meaning under time constraint is lower that the results of inference without time pressure. The study involves a group of 102 students of French as a foreign language at B1 level.

Metody uderzenia hydraulicznego i młynków hydrometrycznych są najczęściej używane do pomiaru natężenia przepływu podczas badań energetycznych turbin wodnych. Liczne doświadczenia w stosowaniu ww. metod pomiaru były przesłanką do wprowadzenia nowych elementów, które udoskonalają sposoby całkowania zmierzonych wielkości w procedurach obliczania natężenia przepływu. Modyfikacje te mają na celu poprawę dokładności pomiaru natężenia przepływu rozważanymi metodami.
The hydraulic current meters method and pressure-time method are most commonly used in measuring of the hydraulic turbines. Gained experience in application both mentioned methods in flow rate measurements was basis for the introduction into them new elements that are supposed to improve the accuracy of integration of the measured values. For the pressure-time method, in comparison to the IEC 60041 standard, the calculation procedure has been changed by introducing modifications that concern: (1) the procedure for calculating the hydraulic losses, and (2) determining the upper limit of integration. For current meter method, the calculation procedure has also been changed by introducing modifications that concern: (1) the boundary layer calculated by means of von Karman formula in which some parameters have been introduced instead of the recommended by the ISO 3354 standard, and (2) the way of integrating of the measured velocity field in which NURBS have been applied that allow to avoid some improper shapes of the interpolated profiles. New procedure is compared with other procedures – (1) compatible with ISO 3354, and (2) based on the natural cubic splines. Assessment of the two modified methods was based on the results of the simultaneous flow rate measurement in Polish hydropower plant equipped with Kaplan turbines with penstocks (Fig. 5). The comparison of the results confirmed the validity of new elements introduced to the procedures (Fig. 6).

This paper presents the effect of the main parameters of fuel injection, such as injection angle and injector opening time, on the combustion process in a self-ignition engine. The study continues the research aimed at optimising the bi-fuel feeding of self-ignition engines with a main fuel dose of methane (CNG). The results described in the paper apply to a HATZ 1B40 one-cylinder engine, which was adapted for being powered with methane. Examinations of the engine powered with a pilot dose of mechanically-injected diesel oil revealed the necessity to adjust the fuel injection advance angle. To this end, the mechanical system offuel supply was replaced with a Common Rail, with controllable fuel injection pressure, fuel injection advance angle and injector opening time. The results presented in the paper show the characteristics of the injector output depending on the fuel pressure in the Common Rail and on the duration of the electric impulse which opens the injector. Moreover, the article presents examples of pressure courses in the combustion chamber at a constant fuel dose and with a different fuel injection advance angle. An example of the combustion pressure course at a constant fuel dose and variable injection pressure and injector opening time is given.

The soil water retention curve (SWRC) represents a fundamental part of the characterization of the soil hydraulic properties. The establishment of SWRC is usually time-consuming and presents several problems such as the difficulty of a correct judgment of the time of equilibrium. This work presents a new methodology that involves gammaray beam attenuation technique associated with the traditional pressure chambers, having as objective the more precise judgment of the time to attain equilibrium. The gamma-ray source used has an activity of 3.7 GBq consisting of 241Am, with peak energy of 59.54 keV. For the determination of retention curves using the gamma-ray attenuation technique, an acrylic pressure chamber was projected and constructed to be positioned between the source and detector with the gamma-ray beam crossing the center of the chamber and the soil sample during water extraction. The proposed technique allowed, through a specifically elaborated software for data acquisition, to evaluate with precision the exact instant of the equilibrium and, consequently, to obtain the right moment to change the chamber pressure to a new desired level, leading to a reduction of the time required for the whole retention curve determination. The results obtained show that the gamma-ray attenuation technique can be very useful as an auxiliary tool to evaluate SWRC, utilizing the Richards chamber.

The knowledge of transient flow in pressure pipelines is very important for the designing and describing of pressure networks. The water hammer is the most common example of transient flow in pressure pipelines. During this phenomenon, the transformation of kinetic energy into pressure energy causes significant changes in pressure, which can lead to serious problems in the management of pressure networks. The phenomenon is very complex, and a large number of different factors influence its course. In the case of a water hammer caused by valve closing, the characteristic of gate closure is one of the most important factors. However, this factor is rarely investigated. In this paper, the results of physical experiments with water hammer in steel and PE pipelines are described and analyzed. For each water hammer, characteristics of pressure change and valve closing were recorded. The measurements were compared with the results of calculations perfomed by common methods used by engineers – Michaud’s equation and Wood and Jones’s method. The comparison revealed very significant differences between the results of calculations and the results of experiments. In addition, it was shown that, the characteristic of butterfly valve closure has a significant influence on water hammer, which should be taken into account in analyzing this phenomenon. Comparison of the results of experiments with the results of calculations? may lead to new, improved calculation methods and to new methods to describe transient flow.

Opis:
Aim/purpose – This paper aims to examine connections between the exchange, equity, commodity and commodity markets of a set of Central and Eastern European (CEE) economies using monthly time-series data. In particular, we examine whether stock – or commodity – price changes might put pressure on these currencies to depreciate, and whether these pressures are transmitted within the region or from larger neighbors. Design/methodology/approach – This paper creates monthly indices of Ex-change Market Pressure (EMP) from 1998 to 2017 using a combination of currency depreciation, reserve losses, and changes in interest-rate differentials for the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Ukraine, Bulgaria, and Romania. After examining these indices for evidence of currency ‘crises’, and their components for evidence of changes in currency policy, Vector Autoregressive (VAR) methods such as Granger causality and impulse-response functions are used to examine connections between EMP, domestic and foreign stock returns, and changes in commodity prices in the first four countries listed. Findings – While EMP increased in 2008, and the degree of central banks’ currency- -market interventions decreased afterward, this paper uncovers key differences among countries. In particular, the Czech Republic is relatively insulated from international transmissions, while Hungary is more susceptible to global spillovers and Poland is exposed to events originating elsewhere in the CEE region. Ukraine shows bidirectional causality between its EMP and stock indices, and finds that pressure on the hryvnia increases if commodity or oil prices decline. Research implications/limitations – This study adds to the relatively limited literature regarding this region, and highlights particular vulnerabilities for both individual countries and specific neighbors; further research is necessary to uncover the channels of transmission using economic modeling. Originality/value/contribution – This study explicitly models two major economic processes in a part of the world that is relatively rarely examined. These include events in Central and Eastern European exchange markets and central bank intervention, and also interlinkages among regional currency and equity markets, foreign equity markets, and global commodity prices. This will allow policymakers to assess integration between these countries, the rest of the European Union, and the global economy.
