Opis:
The aim of this study is to show the essence of unbelief based on the views of Saint Thomas Aquinas. Because in his view unbelief is the opposite of faith, speaking about the unbeliever inevitably requires a knowledge of what faith is. Therefore, Thomas’s views on the topic of unbelief are interwoven in the content of the problem of faith. Due to the participation of human authorities, the structure of unbelief is the same as faith, that is, it is constituted by reason and will. Reason is their subject, and will be the agent. However, unbelief as the abandonment of the truth and goodness contained in the revelation is at the same time the non-acceptance of grace, without which the supernatural faith does not exist. Because Saint Thomas understands faith as an act of reason which, under the influence of the will and with the cooperation of grace, recognizes as truth the content contained in the Gospel, all other activities which omit even one element included in the faith consistently recognize as unbelief. As a result of the new forms of unbelief and reflection on them, some philosophers postulate a reverse order to Thomas, that is, the priority of unbelief before faith.

Opis:
In his article the Author deliberates on non-metaphysical arguments for the existence of God in the doctrine of Saint Thomas Aquinas. The author presents problems of pre-philosophical cognition of the existence of Good, such as the cognition through religious faith and through religious experience. The basic purpose of the text is to give an answer to the question: do the non-metaphysical arguments for the existence of God confirm theistic theses? In the light of Saint Thomas’ doctrine the answer to such a question must be negative.

Opis:
The writings of the saints speak against self-love as a hindrance to friendship with God, while Aristotle speaks of self-love as the basis for virtuous friendship. What causes this apparent discrepancy? Not only is there a difference between good and bad self-love, such that bad self-love must be eradicated, but there is also the cessation of the act of good self-love as the soul progresses spiritually. Then only the love for God remains in act within the perfection of charity and Union with God.

Antonia Fitzpatrick argues clearly throughout Thomas Aquinas on Bodily Identity that the Dominican saint never consistently achieves a coherent, unified understanding of the nature of the continuity of bod-ily matter across the human lifespan, death, and future resurrection. This inconsistency stems largely from Aquinas relying partly on Aris-totle and partly on Averroes’ commentary on the ancient philosopher without ever committing to either, the author comes to conclude...

The author considers a possible dialogue between Saint Thomas Aquinas and representatives of the New Atheism. His interest focuses on the controversy about the existence of God. The paper is divided into three parts. In the first part the author presents main claims of the doctrine of the New Atheism. In the sec-ond he shows different conceptions of mind (reason) and rationality. In the last he presents Saint Thomas’ conception of rationality based on his metaphysical system. Undertaken considerations lead to a conclusion that the correct concep-tion of mind (reason) is a possible starting point in possible discussion with the New Atheism.

In his article the author reviews Cajetan’s different positions on the problem of the immortality of the human soul, and investigates possible reasons which led the Cardinal to dissent with the position of Thomas Aquinas. For this purpose, he invokes selected interpretations of distinguished scholars, with special reference to the approach of Étienne Gilson. Against the background of his analyses the authors attempts to give a synthesis which, as he hopes, can become a modest contribution to contemporary comments on the thought of this great French medievalist about the problem of the immortality of the human soul in Cajetan.

The article attempts to clarify an important aspect of St. Thomas Aquinas’s theory of human action, namely to show these acts of man which are immediately caused by the will. According to some contemporary philosophers, the acts of the will are limited to those of trying or of intending. Do they exhaust the whole possibility of the will to act? The author seeks to answer this question basing his considerations on the analysis of the Summa Theologiae by St. Thomas Aquinas.

Opis:
This article deals with the issue of the immutability of God in Himself. What is meant by “immutability” and why God should (or must) be immutable? Doesn’t He –  whom Christians preach –  contradict His immutability by showing interest in man? These questions, taken by a number of philosophers and theologians have appeared more or less frequently throughout history. The article is devoted to the immutability of God as one and the Holy Trinity on the grounds of Christianity. The article quotes the thoughts of representatives from the Church in the West and in the East – Tertullian and Origen. This thought formed in an era when Trinitarian heresy flourished and had a significant impact on the further development of theological reflection. Then the theological and philosophical position of Thomas Aquinas is taken into account as one who in his investigations on the nature of God used the components of ancient Greek philosophy.

Opis:
Magdalena Płotka, known for numerous publications regarding the philosophical thought of the medieval ages, this time analyses the matter of pleasure in the texts of Aquinas. The book is an extensive study of this topic and the Author herself attempts to show the referred matter in an organised way, with a coherent language, quoting a various bibliography of the subject (for the most part in English-language). The discussed book consists of: the introduction, particular chapters which are seven in numbers, the ending and practical appendices such as the index of abbreviations, bibliography and the index of names. The first chapter titled Przyjemność i jej postacie (Pleasure and Its Shapes), contains the preliminary statements which are further developed in details in the following chapters. At first, the Latin terms which are employed by Aquinas when he speaks of pleasure are enumerated. In the second chapter Magdalena Płotka analyses the topic of pleasure as feeling. Above all she speaks of feelings of the appetitive faculty and then she turns to the comparative study of pleasure and joy. The purpose of this comparison is to answer the question whether we may classify them – pleasure and joy – as feelings. Next, the third chapter, titled: Formalno-materialna struktura przyjemności (Formal-material structure of pleasure) is dedicated to a comparative study between pleasure spiritual and corporeal. In the fourth chapter we find issues regarding the reason and purpose (aim) of pleasure. The fifth chapter offers study on the moral context of pleasure. In this chapter there are included such topics as eutrapelia and sexual pleasure. In the sixth chapter the Author speaks of issues regarding the aesthetic dimension of pleasure. It poses a question whether beauty can be a source of pleasure and in what way. The last, seventh chapter, concerns the topic of pleasure which is the participation of the saved. Thereby the entire domain of responses of human appetitive faculty has been explained, encompassing also the whole human compositum including human condition after death.

Opis:
It is very popular among scholars to reduce the question of medieval embryology only to so called “delayed animation”, with a little reference to important philosophical background of the topic. This article present the concept of “life” in the perspective of thomistic doctrine, especially putting the emphasis on the issue of the soul as the principle of life and what does the virtus generativa means for Aquinas. He exposes in six stage of embryogenesis, which we can discover in his writings, the identity of the embryo in all process of his development. The changes of substantial forms, from vegetative one to human’s form, is contemplated by Aquinas in logical, not chronological order. That’s why for saint Thomas the abortion is considerate always as heavy moral offense contra naturam. For the integral understanding of Thomas’s view on the status of human embryo is important to take account of christological themes.

Second, it looks at the beginning of inquiries on the nature and sources of the good. Three, it analyzes the originality of one of the most interesting solutions in this controversy surrounding the good, which appeared in the thirteenth century and which was contained in the short sentence, “bonum sequitur esse rei”—the good is a consequence of the existence of a thing.

The purpose of the article is to show the relationships between the concept of will and understanding of faith. It is about demonstrating that the adopted concept of the will affects the understanding of faith. Selected concepts of will (realistic, a priori, positivist) were presented in terms of their pursuit of God. When it turns out that God is the object of the will, faith acquires a natural foundation. This means that the will that naturally reaches God comes into a relationship with Him even before faith develops. Consequently, it must be recognized that there is a natural and moral foundation for faith. This kindof foundation exists on the basis of a realistic concept of will. In a priori morality, due to the concept of the will, only moral faith is possible. Positivist philosophy replaces the will with social feelings. That is why faith is understood as trust and is only natural.

Originative apprehension often has been examined in recent decades in light of Aquinas’ reflections. Yet there has not always been agreement in regard to what constitutes such, often due to different emphases given by interpreters to aspects of St. Thomas’ analyses articulated in different contexts. Arguably, it is possible to reconcile certain seemingly divergent important interpretations by reflecting on an important, yet somewhat recessive, theme that Thomas adverted to sparingly throughout his career in utilizing analyses of predecessors to forge his own synthesis to explain cognition in terms of being that is centered on the reciprocal priorities of judging and concomitant incomplex abstracting.
