Opis:
Henryk Mamzer’s conception is an interesting new contribution to the development of socalled constructivist approaches in archaeology. As such it is a good example of the basic assumptions underlying its theory and methodology. In this article I will argue with some basic assumptions of Mamzer’s theory, trying to show that constructivism doesn’t rescue archaeology from the problems, which he would like to avoid. In fact, it deals with the same problems.

Opis:
The main goal of this paper is to reflect on the perspectives and challenges of art and archaeology research. The paper investigates main objectives through the lens of the art historian and archaeologist. Even though, the study on relations between art and archaeology has a long tradition in archaeology and the most famous researchers reflected on those tensions (Colin Renfrew, Michael Shanks, Andrew Jones, Ian Russell, Paul Reilly, Paul Bonaventura), art and archaeology approach is still not a coherent and systematic methodological framework. To deal with this notable lack, the author revises previous studies and points at the possible advantages of the development of studies at the border of art, archaeology and aesthetics. The main problems are illustrated and discussed in reference to archaeological museums and the Polish contemporary art represented by Hubert Czerepok, Agata Ingarden, Agnieszka Kalinowska, Agnieszka Kurant, Robert Kuśmirowski and Joanna Rajkowska.

The reason for this article was the 90th birthday of Professor Stanisław Tabaczyński (born on April 1, 1930). However, at the last stage of editorial work, the sad news of his death reached us (November 28, 2020). All the more we would like to commemorate the Professor, recalling his achievements and merits, which place him among the most outstanding Polish archaeologists, including actual members of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He made a great contribution to the development of Polish and world archaeology in the area of theoretical and field archaeological research. Many of his scientific initiatives concerned the theory and anthropology of culture as well as the methodology of archaeological research and the syntheses of prehistory and the early Middle Ages. His achievements and influence on shaping the minds of archaeologists of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century cannot be overestimated.

Archaeological exhibitions from the last decade reveal a shift in the paradigm of thinking about the past. The role of humans in the narrative about prehistoric times has been decentralised in order to: (1) acknowledge and appreciate the part played by animals; and (2) make visitors more sensitive to the human vs. non-human being-in-the-world. By promoting symmetrical relationships between animals and humans, new archaeological exhibitions correspond to the most recent trends in the theory of archaeology: symmetrical archaeology, relational archaeology, and archaeological animal studies. Through implementing the demands of the current theoretical trends, the exhibitions are in line with the anthropocenic turn in museums displays and the humanities. Two examples of engaged critical archaeological museum studies are discussed: Neues Museum in Berlin and Lascaux IV – Center International de l’Art Pariétal. By joining the discussion on relations between humans and non-humans, biodiversity and past environments, they prompt a reflection on contemporary human attitude to nature and the current condition of the Earth.

Opis:
This article sketches the complex phenomenon of the city and the diverse understanding of archaeological practice within the city, both in cognitive and social terms. Three ways of approaching the city are examined – as material and semiotic cognitive phenomenon (perceived as historical and archaeological source of knowledge about the past), as the composition of past and present social interactions (that could allow archaeology to construct an inter-subjective understanding of the importance of material meaning), and as a subject conducive to establishing ethical foundations for contemporaneous social practice that produces discourses about past social processes and present social values. Ways to connect these three domains are explored – through a reconsideration of archaeological entities and archaeological practice via theoretical propositions of: re-socialized archaeology, second degree archaeology and ethics of social consequences. The author argues that urban archaeology has great potential to become the context for rethinking the nature of archaeological enquiry and the kind of history, narratives and representations based on it.

Opis:
Since the so‑called “bodily turn” in the humanities, it may pass as trivial that, as observed by Alva Noë, “experience is not a passive interior state, but a mode of active engagement with the world”. Nevertheless, it seems worth repeating especially that the most direct implication of this thought – that when humans actively engage with the world they do so by moving their physical bodies around – has apparently penetrated much less. This is especially true in the case of academic disciplines involved in the study of the past – history and archaeology – which seem unprepared to investigate past embodiment in a comprehensive manner. Hence, a new methodological proposition is put forth – archaeology of motion. It is inspired by anthropologists and ethnographers’ successful adaptation of participatory observation and auto- ‑ethnography to the study of embodied practices. It makes use of embodied research advocated by Ben Spatz as well as insights from ecological psychology of James J. Gibson and its various off‑shoots in order to propose a positive research programme for studies in past bodily motion. The paper is capstoned with a short account of a case study on a forgotten Polish folk wrestling style where the proposed theory was put into practice.

Opis:
Abstract: The article discusses theoretical assumptions and the terminology of underwater archaeological research and specialized areas of interest included in it, such as maritime and nautical archaeology. The introduction briefly describes the evolution of scientific underwater research in a pan-European context and Polish approaches. The main part of the text attempts to present and set in order most of the theoretical assumptions that are already in existence, which seems to be poorly known by the Polish archaeological community. The article is based on the studies by K. Muckelroy, S. McGrail, M. E. Jasinski and J. Adams. Special emphasis was placed on determining the scope of the research area in terms of maritime, underwater and nautical archaeology, which often are used in Poland interchangeably and the areas that currently need improvement or changing. In a separate sub-section, the issue of maritime cultural landscapes are presented. It is a concept which was framed by Ch. Westerdahl and presents the meaning of artefacts related to a „water” environment, but which have been deposited on land. Their inclusion yields a wider and more holistic understanding of past relations and cultural landscapes. The potential for widely understood underwater research conducted in Poland does not yet seem to have been fully exploited. It is appropriate, therefore, to use the material that already exists and exploit it in a wider theoretical framework rather than simply working on gaining new material

On March 23rd, 2023 the 100th anniversary of Professor Jan Żak’s birth was marked with an exhibition and a seminar meant to present the modern archeology he had been creating. In addition to Professor’s scientific achievements, there were fragments presented of three documentaries to illustrate his involvement into popularization of archeology. The article discusses also Professor’s work and scientific activities in the field of early medieval archeology, methodology of archaeology and general prehistory, widely recognized and appreciated not only in Poland but also abroad. In 1945 Jan Żak took part in the military operations of the 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division, and his professional life took place in the realities of the People’s Republic of Poland. Particularly important were his organizational achievements as well as scientific contacts with researchers from Western Europe. The article also presents the direction of contemporary archeology methodology established by J. Żak, continued by his students and subsequent generations or archaeologists.

Opis:
The article presents the nineteenth-century philosophical dispute between Karol Libelt and Stefan Pawlicki on the subject of anthropogenesis. This was initiated by the archaeological discoveries in Lake Czeszewskie, a part of Libelt’s estate. In fact, the controversy concerned the problem of whether the chronology of human history set out in the Bible could be questioned, or was still relevant. Libelt advocated the overriding importance of empirical evidence, while the conservative position was pursued by Pawlicki. Thus, it was a controversy pitting two worldviews against each other, in which — for both polemicists — archaeology was only a tool to justify their own beliefs. The article discusses the arguments used by both philosophers to defend their positions, and considers how they sought to interpret archaeological discoveries. In conclusion, it assesses the impact that this dispute had both on the philosophers themselves and on Polish science.

This paper is an attempt at outlining the current state of discussion about the ethnogenesis of the Slavs, mainly within the framework of Polish scientific research, with particular consideration of archaeological theories, both in terms of their differences as well as any similarities. The discussion covers the allochthonic theory (which is predominant in the science), autochthonic theory, as well as the concept defined by an American archaeologist, Florin Curta, which falls outside these two main discourses. The rationale proposed within this paper could support the resumption of a harmonious discussion among the archaeologists on the problem of the ethnogenesis of the Slavs.

Opis:
According to intelligent design theory, certain biological and cosmic phenomena were designed by an intelligent being, which could just as well be natural as supernatural, and this design is scientifically detectable. Critics claim, however, that this theory is unscientific because it employs solely negative argumentation and thus it is an invalid argument from ignorance or an attempt to place God in the gaps of scientific knowledge. In the article, I show that intelligent design theory employs – and must employ – both negative and positive argumentation. The methodological basis of this theory is not an argument from ignorance but the so-called inference to the best explanation which is a form of abductive reasoning. It could be shown that inference to the best explanation has wide application in science – evolutionary theory is based on it too – especially in sciences engaged in the design detection, such as archaeology or forensics. In itself, it does not settle the scientific status of intelligent design theory but it could be a strong indication of this.
