The article offers various systematisations of career theories. In the most general spectrum of classification, two criteria can be found: the content of the theory: content theories; process theories; content-and-process theories, and the constitutive factors of career: prescriptive theories; lifecycle theories. The highlighted classifications of career theories integrate and synthesise accounts, whose structural contents indicate a variety of different sources and cognitive perspectives, constituting a review of the thought regarding the career development process in a particular historical context, as a time period in which they have been established. Various contexts of apprehending the career issue lead to changes in its “theorising”.

Opis:
Two major approaches have dominated the field of the sociology of development: theories of modernization, which focus on developed countries, and theories of development, which concentrate on Latin America, Africa, and East Asia. The social transformations in China, Russia, and the other European former socialist countries since 1989, however, have challenged both the traditional approaches of Sociology of Development with a series of new issues: how should one evaluate the various pathways to development in different countries and regions? how should one examine the state–society relationship in social development and transition? how can one deal with the social inequality in the process of development? These topics have expanded the scope of the Sociology of Development and provided an opportunity to construct new theories. I suggest that, in response to the practice conditions of ongoing socioeconomic transformation, new theories of transition, in addition to theories of modernization and theories of development, is the imperative need in the field of the sociology of development.

The article analyses texts regarding the opera character, or indirectly linked to it, by a number of authors from the late eighteenth century to the last decades of the nineteenth century: Sulzer, Rousseau, Hoffmann, Stendhal, Baudelaire, Wagner. The author focuses on their theoretical texts and artistic prose. The analysis indicates a strong multilateral involvement of the reflection on the topic of character in contemporary aesthetic views and anthropological concepts.

Opis:
This paper offers a specific analysis of speculation bubbles in the economic history of the world, and then tries to identify the causes and effects of the speculation bubble on the real estate market in the USA, which was the main cause of the subprime crisis. The first part of the paper aims at defining the phenomenon of economic fluctuations and speculation bubble and presenting the most popular theories of overinvestment, which emphasize the importance of speculation phenomenon. The next part of the article describes direct causes of subprime crisis. Special attention has been paid to the processes taking place on the real estate market in the USA in the past fifteen years. The final section of the paper is a synthesis of theorems by the economists of Austrian School and Hyman Minsky, and then confronting them with real processes in the US economy in recent years.

The aim of this article is to show ethical aspects of the so-called normative accounting theory (NT), with particular emphasis on the ethical and normative theory (ENT), important for the development of accounting as a science, taking into consideration its social function. Attention is focused on the so-called axiological layer with regard to the methodological foundation (pragmatic methods and related metascience) concerning the work of theorists in Western Europe. Although in the years 70s shall be considered as unscientific and begin the process of domination positive theory of accounting. It seems that the 21st century has brought about a rebirth of specific ethical and social topics in the field of accounting. The importance and usefulness of ethics in accounting have been growing due to changes in accounting and social needs driven by a turbulent environment, as well as changes in science.

This article aims at considering the question whether various migration theories, especially in the fields of demography and sociology, could be useful in the analysis of migration from Poland to Australia in the 1980s. The author is not able to propose definitive answers, however he suggests that the division between political and economic migration, commonly used by researchers, does not provide an effective instrument for describing this specific social group. The article shows that the majority of Poles who did have an official refugee status did not in fact fit well into the definition of a refugee. Meanwhile, among the migrants who did not obtain the refugee status, one could find many active members of the Solidarity movement and also people persecuted by the Polish authorities. Within the research on migration motives, migration transfer, adaptation processes and, to some extent, political activity of Polish migrants in Australia, the author found the following models most useful and applicable: various social network theories, Oded Stark's relative deprivation model, the model of decision-making process developed by Gerald Haberkorn or the concept of Oddyssean and Rubicon refugees by Danièle Joly. None of these theories can provide a universal tool which could allow the researcher to cover all methodological problems related to the subject of Polish migration to Australia between 1980 and 1989 – especially in the area of understanding migrants’ public activity in the new country.

The paper is a reply to the polemic with my article "The Structure of Scientific Theories and Systems of Values", which presented a number of analogies between methodological and metaethical problems. These analogies can be seen if we acknowledge the information surplus of evaluative statements in comparison to normative statements (similarly in science theories are stronger than observational statements), which is indicated by the examples of actual moral questions. The basis for the polemic is the fact that its authors deny the existence of this surplus, claiming that evaluations are equivalent to and not stronger than norms. Moreover, as they reduce metaethics to the issues of meaning, and methodology to the issues of justification, they have to deny the possibility of these two domains meeting on the ground of similar problems. The paper also illustrates the reasons for a modification of meanings of certain philosophical terms that appeared in my previous article.

Regardless of the fact that economics distinguishes itself from other social sciences by a high level of formal deductive modelling, it is a social science due to the essence of the economic process where a human is a subject and an object at the same time. In recent years this issue has been more frequently emphasized by economists in ongoing discussions. In the discussions, a good deal of time is devoted to economic models and, mainly, their relations with the socioeconomic reality and coherence of empirical evidence. The article presents a thesis that some mainstream economic theories have not always constituted the background to their practical applications, which led - and still can lead- to the dogmatic and inflexible use of model solutions for economic phenomena which are difficult to forecast in a non-variant rigid model. The aim is to critically analyse the beliefs about the usefulness of universal economic models in the economic reality advocated by mainstream economists, and to prove that not all economic models have constituted the background to their practical applications.

The article attempts to analyse the Polish experience relating to the integration of immigrants in a broad macro-historical context, mainly European. The article starts with the presentation of the theoretical conceptions of integration. Next, different challenges of the European socio-historical context of integration and integration policies in Europe are presented. Subsequently, the concepts and practices of the integration in Poland as well as the present state and the prospects of development of the field are discussed in relation to internal and external conditions. The text shows the integration of immigrants as affected, on one hand, by Europeanization and globalization, and on the other, by the Polish special circumstances linked both to a wider social context and to the characteristics of the immigration to Poland.

After the London bombings in July 2005, the concern of terrorism scholars and policy makers has turned to “home-grown” terrorism and potential for political violence from within the states. “Radicalization” became a new buzz word. This article follows a number of reviews of the literature on radicalization and offers another angle for looking at this research. First, it discusses the term “radicalization” and suggests the use of the following definition of radicalization as a process by which a person adopts belief systems which justify the use of violence to effect social change and comes to actively support as well as employ violent means for political purposes. Next, it proposes to see the theories of radicalization focusing on the individual and the two dimensions of his/her motivation: whether that motivation is internal or external and whether it is due to personal choice or either internal (due to some psychological traits) or external compulsion. Though not all theories fall neatly within these categories, they make it possible to make comparisons of contributions from a variety of different areas thus reflecting on the interdisciplinary nature of the study of terrorism in general and radicalization as a part of it.

Opis:
Basing on the two most influential theories in the literature on idiom comprehension (Glucksberg 2001; Vega Moreno 2003, 2004, 2005) as well as on the account of familiar metaphor comprehension (Wilson – Carston 2006), the present author proposes an account of comprehension of familiar idioms as metaphorical expressions. Unfamiliar metaphors are comprehended on-line in a relevance-guided comprehension procedure which involves adjustment of concepts encoded in idiom constituents. When the metaphorical denotation of the idiom is memorised, the well-known idiomatic string is comprehended just as familiar metaphors in the sense of Wilson – Carston (2006), i.e. in the process of disambiguation of two encoded senses.

Opis:
In the paper, I present one of the most important contemporary attempts of defeating fundamental problems concerning justification in the context of doxastic assumption. Goldman rejects thesis that we cannot take account of anything except insofar we have believes about it, assumption accepted by foundations and coherence theories. Instead of faulty (above mentioned) views, Goldman indicates reliable cognitive processes as perception, memory, and reasoning. In my paper, I present the whole gamut of arguments against Goldman’s theory but as decisive I consider faults on the ground of reliability concerning perception.
W artykule prezentuję jedną z najważniejszych współczesnych prób pokonania zasadniczych problemów związanych z kwestią uzasadniania w kontekście tzw. założenia doksastycznego (doxastic). Goldman, odrzucając tezę, iż w uzasadnieniu nie możemy brać pod uwagę niczego innego niż przekonania, tezę przyjmowaną przez prezentowane w artykule stanowiska fundacjonistyczne i koherencjonistyczne, przyjmuje pogląd eksternalistyczny. Zamiast wadliwych (wyżej wspomnianych) stanowisk Goldman wskazuje na reliabilne procesy poznawcze w postaci przede wszystkim ujęć percepcyjnych, ale i danych pamięciowych oraz rozumowań. W artykule przedstawiam wachlarz argumentów krytycznych wobec koncepcji Goldmana, ale za zasadniczy uznaję brak podstaw w jego teorii dla akceptacji wiarygodności procesów percepcyjnych.

Celem artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na możliwość wykorzystania wybranych konstruktów teorii wymiany, do modelowania interakcji społecznych. Nie byłoby nic nowego w tym ujęciu, gdyby nie fakt zakotwiczenia rozważań w kontekście potrzeb, a ściślej mówiąc, dostarczania bezpieczeństwa i wzajemnym udziale w jego kreowaniu. Autorka zakłada, że bezpieczeństwo − zdefiniowane jako usługa dostarczana przez państwo w sposób kolegialny − może być istotnym przedmiotem wymiany społecznej. Przez prześledzenie wybranych teorii potrzeb, hierarchizujących konieczność ich zaspokajania oraz przywołanie głównych tez twórców teorii wymiany, podjęto próbę ukierunkowania rozważań na rodzaje interakcji oraz na to, co warunkuje ich istnienie.
The aim of this study is to draw the attention to the possibility of using selected constructs of the exchange theory to the model of social interactions. There would be nothing new in this approach, if not the fact anchor considerations in the context of the needs, and more specifically the provision of the security and mutual participation in its creation. The author assumes that security defined as a service provided by the state in a collegial way can be an important subject of the social exchange. Through selected theory of needs which hierarchies and also recalls the main founders of the exchange theory an attempt to focus discussion on the forms of the interaction, and on the factors which determine their existence was made.

This paper focuses on the negative narratives of the transformation in Poland, which describe the Round Table talks in 1989 as having been an act, showing at least the domination of the communist leaders, if not the betrayal by the opposition leaders. This is continued in the institutionalized procedures of lustration, in searching for secret police agents amongst others. The persistence of the topic as the foremost in the post-1989 political life of democratic Poland is explained by reference to the dramaturgical structure of the transformation as an emancipation that should have led to a cathartic culmination. In fact, in Poland the social drama (Turner 1974 ) had started much earlier, witnessed by the summer strikes of 1980 and the establishment of Solidarność but was spoiled by martial law which was introduced by the communists on January 13th, 1981. Thus the freezing stage followed instead, while the emancipation was effected ten years later from above as a result of negotiated compromise. Apart from that emancipation, this meant the introduction of a capitalist economy while political freedom and democracy were the only elements kept on the publicly agreed upon agenda of the anti-communist movement. The negative narratives result from frustration, which in turn leads to symbolic lustration attempts at scapegoating the opposition leader(s).

Among all the different types of penalties that exist in the various juridical systems around the world, capital punishment, also known as the death penalty, is one of the most controversial ones. The discussion about its legitimacy and legality crosses social, philosophical, cultural, religious and historical fields. The present article aims to first analyze how capital punishment is treated in different parts of the world, whether it is present or not, and to later on focus on the attempts to justify such a harsh punishment, by both the retributive and utilitarian theories of punishment.

The article presents the analysis of some chosen arguments from Karol Wojtyła’s The Acting Person in consideration of the opposition between the realist and constructivist theoretical standpoints. It ponders the attractiveness of the realist position both for the social and personal dimension of human existence by considering such issues as freedom, autonomy, alienation, truth, receptivity, and community. Finally, it points to the ecological problem of the rightly understood “inactivity,” which is contrasted with the late modern hyperactivity of social constructivism.
