Opis:
It is assumed that the radical changes that have taken place in theoretical linguistics over the last 3 decades or so has led to a rejection of the conception of language seen exclusively as an independent and autonomous system of signs. Having set this conception against the background of the major 19th century approaches to language, we claim that the autonomy postulate seems to have been giving way to the idea that language is a symbol of human experience. The article presents, then, a brief, yet systematic, historical survey of the from-motivation-via-arbitrariness-to-motivation projection of linguistics since the 19th century, and identifies some of the practical implications of this projection.

Opis:
This paper describes the CoreGram project, a multilingual grammar engineering project that develops HPSG grammars for several typologically diverse languages that share a common core. The paper provides a general motivation for doing theoretical linguistics the way it is done in the CoreGram project, and is therefore not exclusively targeted at computational linguists. I argue for a constraint-based approach to language rather than a generative-enumerative one and discuss issues of formalization. Recent advantages in language acquisition research are mentioned and conclusions on how theories should be constructed are drawn. The paper discusses some of the highlights in the implemented grammars, gives a brief overview of central theoretical concepts and their implementation in the TRALE system, and compares the CoreGram project with other multilingual grammar engineering projects.

The Current Evolution of Slavic Languages in Central and Eastern Europe in the Context of the EU Multilingualism PolicyThe respect for and protection of cultural and linguistic diversity have long been guaranteed in various international and European legislative acts. More recently, the European Union has also developed laws aimed at the preservation and promotion of multilingualism. Linguistic diversity has long been seen as an obstacle to the effective functioning of EU institutions. Recently, however, it has been considered as a valuable “heritage” of the EU.In our article, we will present a brief overview of policies promoting multilingualism in Europe, and more specifically, in the EU. Subsequently, we will compare this framework to the changes occurring presently in modern Slavic languages of Central and Eastern Europe. The tendency of these languages towards increased analitism transforms these predominantly synthetic languages into more analytical ones. These conclusions have led us to the following question: What is the current state of modern Slavic languages and how far may their evolution be addressed by policies promoting multilingualism? Our analysis consists of two parts: first, we scrutinised various European legislative acts promoting multilingualism; second, we analysed modern Slavic languages by means of the parallel corpora of chosen languages from the Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure project (including UNESCO and EU legislation, etc.).

Multilingualism and DictionariesThe Russian-Bulgarian-Polish dictionary that we (Wojciech Sosnowski, Violetta Koseska-Toszewa and Anna Kisiel) are currently developing has no precedent as far as its theoretical foundations and its structure are concerned. The dictionary offers a unique combination of three Slavic languages that belong to three different groups: a West Slavic language (Polish), a South Slavic language (Bulgarian) and an East Slavic language (Russian). The dictionary describes semantic and syntactic equivalents of words between the languages. When completed, the dictionary will contain around 30,000 entries. The principle we build the dictionary on is that every language should be given equal status. Many of our data come from the Parallel Polish-Bulgarian-Russian corpus developed by us as part of the CLARIN-PL initiative. In the print version, the entries come in the order of the Cyrillic alphabet and they are not numbered (except for homonyms, which are disambiguated with Roman numbers). We selected the lemmas for the dictionary on the basis of their frequency in the corpus. Our dictionary is the first dictionary to include forms of address and most recent neologisms in the three languages. Faithful to the recent developments in contrastive linguistics, we begin with a form from the dictionary’s primary language and we define it in Polish. Subsequently, based on this definition, we try to find an equivalent in the second and the third language. Therefore, the meaning comes first and only then we look for the form (i.e. the equivalent) that corresponds to this meaning. This principle, outlined in Gramatyka konfrontatywna języków polskiego i bułgarskiego (GKBP), allows us to treat data from multiple languages as equal. In the dictionary, we draw attention to the correct choice of equivalents in translation; we also provide categorisers that indicate the meaning of verbal tenses and aspects. The definitions of states, events and their different configurations follow those outlined in the net model of verbal tense and aspect. The transitive vs. intransitive categorisers are vital for the languages in question, since they belong to two different types: synthetic (Bulgarian) and analytic (Polish and Russian). We predict that the equal status of every language in the dictionary will facilitate easier and faster development of an electronic version in the future.

Opis:
The aim of this study is to demonstrate the impact of subjective stylistic factors on the style of contemporary theoretical professional communication written in the Czech language. The paper presents the quantitative characteristics of selected expressional means used in contemporary Czech written scientific discourse through analysing representative material from selected monographs produced in the selected areas of scientific domains. The research material base comprised a corpus of current Czech theoretical-scientific monological communication amounting to 5,000 pages. The corpus included collective or single-author monographs, thematically divided into five groups of fields recognised by the Czech Science Foundation (hereinafter GAČR) as: (1) technical sciences (1TEXT1, 1TEXT2, 1TEXT3); (2) sciences of inanimate nature (2TEXT1, 2TEXT3); (3) medical and biological sciences (3TEXT1, 3TEXT2); (4) humanities and social sciences (4TEXT1, 4TEXT2); (5) agricultural and biological[1]environmental sciences (5TEXT1, 5TEXT2, 5TEXT3). The term “contemporary scientific communication / contemporary scientific discourse” is understood as scientific monological Czech monographical communication produced approximately within the last 15 years. The proper aim of our study is to verify through sufficiently conclusive material whether contemporary Czech written theoretical scientific monological communications feature any differences that hold across diverse scientific fields, which would result from subjective stylistic factors. The analysis of selected expressional components in the corpus did confirm the (certifiable) occurrence of subjective stylistic factors in contemporary Czech theoretical discourse, yet present to a very limited extent. Individual differences were mostly manifesting in the representation of foreign words, rhetorical questions, platitudinous or rhetorical means of expression and also in expressing similarity. The biological factors, i.e. the author’s age and sex and the stylistic opposition of collective v. single-author monograph were not evidenced in the examined textual corpus. The most conspicuous differences between the analysed monographs resulted from the field affiliation of particular monographs, namely from (dis)respect for the ruling communicative norms in the given field/s.

To the memory of Professor Violetta KoseskaThis paper is devoted to an outstanding scholar. Violetta Koseska was a professor of synchronic linguistics and the author and co-author of many major theories in contrastive analysis. One only needs to mention theoretical contrastive analysis with mediating semantic language, which plays a key role in equivalent simultaneous description of multiple languages, or descriptions of semantic categories of: time (using Petri net theory) and definiteness/indefiniteness (using quantifier calculus), among other things – to realize the significance of Professor Koseska’s work. Pamięci Profesor Violetty KoseskiejTekst poświęcony wybitnej uczonej – profesor językoznawstwa synchronicznego Violetcie Koseskiej, autorce i współautorce wielu ważnych teorii z zakresu badań konfrontatywnych. Opis:
The issue of built-in argument positions is not particularly popular in contemporary Slavic studies. However, some developments have occurred since the introduction of predicate-argument logic in semantic-syntactic studies. This paper focuses not only on theoretical developments but also on conclusions arising from the study of two Slavic languages: Bulgarian (an analytic language) and Polish (a synthetic language). Until now, the issue of incorporating an argument position in the form of a predicative expression has been viewed as a lexical issue. However, both lexical and morphological means can be used to express a type of proposition. The peculiarities of the distinction between word and sentence are also discussed.
