    The aim of this paper is to answer to the following question: How should theological propositions, originating from the language used to describe creatures, be understood so as to avoid idolatry, that is reducing God to the category of contingent entities? Using the theory of similarities formulated by Peter Abelard, I pointed out that the risk of committing theological errors decreases when language formulas are treated as models, and their meaning is understood in a figurative way. Such an attitude enables us to acknowledge the fact that language can be only partially adequate to the subject under discussion, and makes us aware that we describe only one aspect of a given theological phenomenon, as the chosen model may not correspond to other aspects. Such understanding of the theological language calls for a constant reinterpretation of theological propositions. If images used in theology are linked to the structure of  the world, each change in  the scientific understanding of  this structure brought by  empirical sciences, should lead to  changes in  the language used by theology. Lack of such changes in the system of religious beliefs will lead to a decrease in the credibility of theology and push its truths towards the category of myths and fables.

    The language of theology has always been liable to get to one of two extremes. The first one consists in an assumption that we cannot say anything about God as the Divine Being cannot be expressed in human language. The other extreme assumption is that theological terms can be used unequivocally both in the discourse on God and on man. One way to avoid those two traps is to adopt the method of analogy. A discrepancy between the „theory” regarding God and the experience” of His actions (or lack of action) in one’s life, poses a challenge for modern theology. The use of analogy in statements about God does not in itself prevent the conflict between commonly accepted statements about God and His experience in everyday life. However, metaphorical analogy provides a defined mediation, which may be qualified as an indirect recognition of some states of things by human mind. How does it influence the question of recognition and acknowledgment of God’s existence? Perhaps, we are doomed to everlasting shifts from one analogy to another in order to grasp the fact of His presence and activity.

    L’articolo sviluppa alcune riflessioni circa la conoscenza «teologica» di Dio, le sue condizioni di possibilità, la sua natura, i suoi strumenti e i suoi limiti. La conoscenza teologica di Dio è quella che scaturisce dalla sua libera autocomunicazione, ed è dunque distinta, senza esserne separata, dalla conoscenza «naturale». In primo luogo l’articolo presenta il concetto teologico di Mistero poi riflette i limiti e i modelli del linguaggio teologico su Dio; alla fine approfondisce l’idea dell’analogia, come regola cristiana del linguaggio su Dio. La conoscienza cristiana di Dio non è soltanto conoscenza dell’Essere assoluto, ma anche e propriamente dell’Essere personale e interpersonale in dialogo con noi. La conoscenza personale ha certo un momento concettuale, in quanto si tratta di conoscenza propriamente umana, ma anche e soprattutto una profondità a‑concettuale, in quanto si basa sulla simpatia o più profondamente sulla «connaturalità» (connaturalitas, per usare il termine di San Tommaso), che indica un momento di libera scelta (tendenzialmente reciproca), e sulla presenza del «Tu» come realtà della nostra vita. Ogni linguaggio teologico suppone un’esperienza religiosa come incontro personale col Dio della fede, incomprensibile e ineffabile.
    Artykuł prezentuje refleksje na temat „teologicznego” poznania Boga, jego założeń i możliwości, jego natury, narzędzi i limitów. Teologiczne poznanie Boga jest tym, co wypływa z Jego swobodnego komunikowania się. Autor przedstawia w pierwszej kolejności teologiczną koncepcję Tajemnicy, a następnie odzwierciedla ograniczenia i modele języka teologicznego na temat Boga; na koniec pogłębia ideę analogii, jako chrześcijańskiej reguły językowej mówienia o Bogu. Chrześcijańskie poznanie Boga to nie tylko, na miarę ludzkich możliwości, poznanie Bytu absolutnego, ale także i przede wszystkim poznanie bytu osobowego i międzyosobowego w dialogu z nami. Wiedza osobista posiada moment pojęciowy, gdyż jest wiedzą ściśle ludzką, ale także i przede wszystkim głębię a-pojęciową, gdyż opiera się na relacji, na „współodczuwaniu” (connaturalitas, używając terminu św. Tomasza), które wskazują na moment wolnego wyboru i na obecność „Ty”, jako rzeczywistości naszego życia. Każdy język teologiczny zakłada przeżycie religijne, jako osobiste spotkanie z Bogiem wiary, niepojętym i niewysłowionym.
    The article develops some reflections on the “theological” knowledge of God, conditions of its possibility, its nature, its tools, and its limits. The theological knowledge of God is that which springs from his free self-communication, and is therefore distinct, without being separated from it, from «natural» knowledge. In the first place, the article presents the theological concept of Mystery and then reflects the limits and models of the theological language on God; at the end he deepens the idea of analogy, as a Christian rule of language on God. The Christian conscience of God is not only knowledge of absolute Being, but also and properly of personal and interpersonal Being in dialogue with us. Personal knowledge certainly has a conceptual moment, as it is a strictly human knowledge, but also and above all an a-conceptual depth, as it is based on sympathy or more deeply on “connaturality” (Latin connaturalitas, to use the term of St. Thomas), which indicates a moment of free choice (basically reciprocal), and on the presence of the “You” as the reality of our life. Every theological language presupposes a religious experience as a personal encounter with the God of faith, incomprehensible and ineffable.

    Reflection on the role of the method in theology aims to show that the method remains an extremely important tool for theology as a science. Theology, like other scientific disciplines, must be based on an appropriate methodological system when it undertakes to explain the religious and supernatural element in the world. Without this element, theology loses its significant cognitive value and ceases to inspire human thought. Today, one of the most important tasks of theology as a science is to establish the necessary balance between the deep sense of faith and religious practice.
    Refleksja na temat roli metody w teologii ma na celu ukazanie, że właśnie metoda pozostaje niezwykle ważnym narzędziem w odniesieniu do teologii jako nauki. Teologia podobnie jak inne dyscypliny naukowe jeśli ma odgrywać ważne posłannictwo w dziejach ludzkich, a zwłaszcza przy wyjaśnianiu pierwiastka religijnego i nadprzyrodzonego w świecie, to musi opierać się na odpowiednim systemie metodologicznym. Bez niego traci na znaczeniu jako wartość poznawcza i inspirująca myśl ludzką. Obecnie jednym z najważniejszych zadań teologii jako nauki pozostaje zapewnienie niezbędnej równowagi między pogłębionym zmysłem wiary a praktyką religijną.

    Mężczyzna i kobieta są określeni przez swoją płeć nie tylko na poziomie biologicznym, ale osobowym. Dzięki niej mają zdolność tworzenia communio personarum. Na tej zasadzie także ludzka płciowość uczestniczy w obrazie i podobieństwie człowieka do Boga. Poprzez płeć zostaje udzielony ludziom dar macierzyństwa lub ojcostwa, który swe źródło ma w Bogu. Człowiek jest obrazem swego Stwórcy, ale natura Boga przewyższa wszelkie stworzenia. W Starym i Nowym Testamencie Bóg objawia się człowiekowi, posługując się ludzkim językiem, pojęciami i obrazami. Także język teologii często posługuje się analogią. Gdy Pismo św. nadaje Bogu cechy męskie lub żeńskie, kiedy porównuje miłość Boga do miłości ojca lub matki, to czyni to przez analogię. Użyte porównanie idzie w parze z nie-podobieństwem, gdyż Bóg zawsze jest Inny. Boże ojcostwo i macierzyństwo nie są tego samego poziomu co ludzkie rodzicielstwo. Bóg jest ponad płciowością. Język Biblii, a za nim język teologii, posługuje się kategoriami antropomorficznymi. Mówi się zatem w teologii o odwiecznym rodzeniu, które stanowi element wewnętrznego życia Boga. Jest to rodzenie ponadpłciowe. Nie jest ani męskie, ani kobiece. Jest Boskie ze swej natury. Również o Bożym ojcostwie mówi się w nadludzkim sensie. Chrystus, Syn Boży, objawia Boga jako Ojca właśnie w znaczeniu ponadcielesnym, całkowicie Bożym. W Biblii są także obrazy miłości Boga porównane do miłości macierzyńskiej. Biblia jednak nie nazywa Boga Matką, ale właśnie Ojcem. Tak jest w tekstach modlitw Starego Testamentu i w przekazie Ewangelii (zob. Mk 14, 36). Bóg jest czystym duchem, w którym nie ma miejsca na różnicę płci (KKK 370), ale człowiek, będąc obrazem Boga, realizuje go osobowo poprzez swoją płciowość: jako matka albo ojciec. W związku małżeńskim poprzez communio personarum kobieta i mężczyzna najwyraźniej ujawniają, że są stworzeni na obraz i podobieństwo Jedynego Boga w Trójcy Świętej. Ojcostwo Boga jest źródłem ludzkiego bycia matką czy ojcem. Dlatego dziecko jest przede wszystkim dzieckiem samego Boga, bo wszelkie życie pochodzi jedynie od Boga, a każdy człowiek jest bezpośrednio na Jego obraz. Genealogia każdej osoby ludzkiej w Bogu znajduje swe źródło i tylko w Jego Ojcowskich ramionach może znaleźć dopełnienie (zob. Łk 23, 46 i Ef 1, 20). Człowiek świadomie czerpie z miłości Trójcy Świętej, gdy w Duchu, z pokorą i ufnością, woła do Boga: Ojcze nasz... Tego nauczył człowieka Boży Syn.
    The man and woman are expressed by their sex, not only on the biological level, but personal level. They by their sex may form communio personarum. On this principle also the human sexuality participates in image and likeness of man to God. By their sex is given to people the gift of motherhood and fatherhood that originates in God. The man is the image of his Creator, but the divine nature transcends all creatures. In the Old and the New Testament God reveals himself to man, using the human language, terms and images. The theological language often uses an analogy. The Sacred Scriptures give the attributes masculine or feminine to God and compare God's love to a love of father or of mother, doing that by the analogy. This likeness accompanies a no-likeness, because God always is a Different One. The divine fatherhood and motherhood is not the same level as the human procreation. God is among a man's sexuality. The biblical language, and also the language of theology, uses the anthropomorphic categories. The theology says about the eternal generating, that is an element of the interior God's life. This generating among sexuality is not masculine nor feminine. This generating in its very nature is divine. Also the divine fatherhood is among human things. Christ, the Son of God, reveals God as Father in ultra-corporeal meaning. That is the divine meaning. In Sacred Scriptures, too, the God's love is compared to a mother's love. The Sacred Scriptures don't call God Mother, but Father. That is in the text of prayers in the Old Testament and in the Gospel (cf. Mk 14:36). God is pure spirit in which there is no place for the difference between the sexes (CCC 370). However the man, being the image of God, realizes that as the person by his sex: as mother or as father. In marriage by communio personarum the male and the female most clearly show that they are created in the image and likeness of the One God in the Holy Trinity. The divine fatherhood is the source of human being mother or father. This is why the child as a priority is the child of God, because only God gives the life and each man is created directly in His divine image. The genealogy of each human person has the source in God and only in His fatherly arms can be perfection (cf. Lk 23:46 and Eph 1:20). The man possesses knowingly the love from the Holy Trinity, when in Spirit, with a humility and a trust, calls God: our Father... The man has learned it through the Son of God.

    The crisis of the theological language has been a subject of heated debate for a long time. Johann Baptist Metz even stated that the “Gotteskrise” (crisis of God) is in the first place a crisis of language. However, the identification of a new and appropriate language is not an easy task and – as the History of the Church shows – it is always a work of several generations. The following text refers to the importance of metaphors for theological language. A metaphor is understood not only as a literary form, but also as a method which next to understanding touches on emotions and the imagination giving it a special persuasive power. It should not replace the reflective language of theology, but complement it. The Polish philosopher Krzysztof Michalski discovered in the work of Nietzsche the idea that a metaphor on the one hand has a concrete effect, but on the other hand shows that the most important thoughts can only be expressed in this form. Simple terms can never encompass all of life, there is always a greater sense to them than the mere words suggest. Therefore, metaphors in  Nietzsche’s texts become metadefinitions, which always refer to something else, to something larger, to the limit of our knowledge. Even though the metaphor will not solve the problem of the crisis of language in theology, it points to an important aspect of religious speech. It is a suitable – though not the only one – means of reflection on the Revelation, which ultimately does not only provide information about God, but aims at our life and wants to lead us to a communion with God.

     W artykule została zaproponowana korekta w ujmowaniu relacji między modelami soteriologicznymi. Zwykle określa się ją mianem komplementarnej. Po skrótowym przedstawieniu stanu dyskusji nad ideą idei modeli w teologii i zasadą komplementarności zwrócono uwagę na specyfikę modeli soteriologicznych: ich wielość, która wymyka się konstruowaniu dychotomicznych układów (typowych dla wzorcowej idei komplementarności i stosowalnej np. w trynitologii), a także ich niejednorodność wynikającą z niejednakowego powiązania ze źródłami wiary. Relacje między modelami w soteriologii są na tyle skomplikowane, że nie zawsze pomaga w ich wyjaśnieniu „standardowa” zasada komplementarności, choć zawsze pozostaje w mocy reguła niewyrażalności tajemnicy zbawienia przy pomocy jednego tylko wyjaśnienia, a zatem także reguła uzupełniania się różnych (poprawnych) ujęć. Pojawiające się w teologii próby syntetycznego ujęcia soteriologii nie mogą się tym regułom sprzeciwiać, ale też ich podejmowanie świadczy o tym, że można odstawiać na bok tezę o pozostawaniu poszczególnych modeli we wzajemnym, nieusuwalnym napięciu.
    The article proposes a correction in the recognition of the relationships between soteriological models. Usually, the relation is referred to as complementary. After briefly presenting the state of discussion on the idea of models in theology and the principle of complementarity, attention is drawn to the specificity of soteriological models: their multiplicity, which eludes the construction of dichotomous systems (typical for the model idea of complementarity and applicable e.g. in trinitology), as well as their heterogeneity resulting from connections with sources of faith. The relationships between the models in soteriology are so complicated that the „standard” principle of complementarity does not always help in their explanation, although the rule of the inexpressibility of the mystery of salvation using only one explanation and therefore the rule of complementing different (correct) approaches always remains in force. The attempts of a synthetic approach to soteriology appearing in theology cannot oppose these rules, but the sole undertaking proves that one can put aside the thesis that individual models remain in mutual, irremovable tension.

    From 1826 to 1903, about 80% of the students of Seinai Theological Seminary were ethnic Lithuanians, and Lithuanian was their or their parents’ native language. The question about Lithuanian activities of the Lithuanian students at the seminary is therefore well founded. During first decades of its existence, national consciousness of the Lithuanians was not relevant. For performing pastoral work in Lithuanian parishes, the Lithuanian brought from parental home was sufficient. Using the Lithuanian language at Seinai Theological Seminary was stimulated by the reforms of Bishop K. I. Łubieński and encouragement of Professor Stanisław Jamiołkowski. First of all, the use of Lithuanian manifested itself through the singing of Lithuanian folk songs. Singing Lithuanian songs stressed the ethnic difference between the Lithuanian and Polish students of the seminary. Officially, the Lithuanian language was not taught at the seminary until 1904. For this reason, Lithuanian students started learning Lithuanian secretly: they realised they would need it in their pastoral work. Seminary students spoke Lithuanian among themselves, thus demonstrating their national awareness, but they also learned Polish at the seminary. The students’ Lithuanian activities should be viewed in the context of Lithuanian nationalism. National revival was raising specific requirements to the Church and it was important that the seminary trained future clergymen to meet the demands of the public. The students engaged in Lithuanian activities through participation in a secret association of future Lithuanian priests. One of the forms of its activities was distribution of the banned Lithuanian press. The students not only distributed banned literature but also contributed to its printing and publishing: they produced hand-written newspapers in the seminary and wrote articles, first for illegal publications and later, after the ban on the Lithuanian press was lifted, for legally published periodicals.

    This article considers the art of translation through a comparative analysis of the translations of two selected theological texts taken from the French and Polish version of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC). Specifically, this study examines the Polish and French versions of CCC 748, which speaks about the relationship between the Church and Christ. As CCC 749 reveals, this relationship, pertains not only to the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, but also to the Third Person, meaning the Holy Spirit. Like the number that precedes it, CCC 749 is translated differently in both the Polish and French versions. Essentially, this article highlights the difficulty of translating and demonstrates how difficult it is to translate and how responsible the translator is for his translations of theological texts that pertain to faith.
    Niniejszy artykuł jest próbą analizy porównawczej z perspektywy sztuki translatorskiej dwóch wybranych teologicznych tekstów z wersji francuskiej i polskiej Katechizmu Kościoła Katolickiego. Zauważone uwagi, co do wersji polskiej i francuskiej Katechizmu, zgrupowane zostały wokół 748 punktu KKK, który w swej treści wskazuje czytelnikowi na relację, jaka zachodzi między Kościołem i Chrystusem. Jednak należy zauważyć, że powyższa zależność nie ogranicza się wyłącznie do artykułów wiary dotyczących Drugiej Osoby Trójcy Świętej, lecz także dotyka Trzeciej Osoby Boskiej, jaką jest Duch Święty. O tym mówi Katechizm w punkcie 749, który podobnie jak poprzedni punkt nie uchronił się przed różnicami, jakie zaszły między jego wersją francuską a polską. Artykuł pokazuje jak trudna i odpowiedzialna jest praca tłumacza zwłaszcza, kiedy problem przekładu dotyka tekstów teologicznych związanych z wiarą.

    The main thesis of the paper states that Catholic theology and Evangelical theology use different languages. The differences stem from the philosophical dispute about universals. The following positions emerged in the debate: radical realism (universalia ante rem), moderate realism (universsalia in re) and nominalism (notitia intuitiva et notitia abstractiva). The language of Catholic theology is a language of moderate realism, while the language of Evangelical theology is a language of nominalism. The linguistic differences result in a different understanding of important theological statements. The paper uses an analysis of selected fragments from a Catholic and an Evangelical catechism as a basis for the demonstration of the way the following issues are understood: (1) knowledge of God, (2) the concept of original sin, (3) the nature of the Church, (4) the origin of sacraments, (5) life in the world to come.
    Główna teza artykułu stwierdza, że teologia katolicka oraz teologia ewangelicka posługują się różnymi językami. Różnice są zakorzenione w filozoficznym sporze o uniwersalia. W sporze tym ukształtowały się następujące stanowiska: realizm skrajny (universalia ante rem), realizm umiarkowany (universalia in re) oraz nominalizm (notitia intuitiva et notitia abstractiva). Język teologii katolickiej jest językiem realizmu umiarkowanego, natomiast język teologii ewangelickiej – językiem nominalizmu. Różnice językowe mają wpływ na odmienne rozumienie istotnych twierdzeń teologicznych. W artykule pokazano – na przykładzie analizy wybranych tekstów z katechizmu katolickiego i ewangelickiego – różnice w rozumieniu i interpretacji takich kwestii, jak: (1) poznawanie Boga, (2) pojęcie grzechu pierworodnego, (3) natura Kościoła, (4) geneza sakramentów, (5) życie w przyszłym świecie.

    Autobiografia mistyczna (Mystical Autobiography) by Marianna Marchocka (1603-1652), a discalced Carmelite, forms a heterogeneous corpus of notes hastily edited at the request of her confessor, who was to destroy them immediately after reading. Though Marchocka’s text is not free from linguistic errors, it is free from any aesthetic ornamentation, providing a „brute” and reliable testimony of a mystical experience. Despite atomization of the composition and stylistic defects, it is a reflection of the transcendence and inexpressibility of the experience, conveyed in a manner characterized by a low degree of theological conceptualization and a large number of evidently apophatic phrases scattered throughout the text. It is a theologically asystemic, unaesthetic and apophatic statement, and as such emphatically exemplifies the essence of a mystical text – an account of personal experience of the love of God, which evades the laws of doctrinal generalizations and literary conventions. The inconspicuous idiom of Marchocka’s spiritual rough notes combined with a richness of content calls for an analysis within the context of significant but presently downplayed domains of negative theology and the theology of silence.

    Teologiczna hermeneutyka języka wiary w ujęciu Grabnera-Haidera jest teologicznym sposobem wyjaśniania, rozumienia i interpretowania całości języka wiary. Austriacki metodolog religii wyraźnie rozróżnia interpretację naukową od interpretacji przednaukowej i praktycznej, a także od argumentacji. Zauważa bardzo trafnie, że przy tej interpretacji mamy do czynienia z dwoma logicznymi językami prawidłowymi (Orthosprache). Jednym z nich jest język prawidłowy interpretatora, którym on nie mówi wprost o samym przedmiocie tekstu. Drugim jest język prawidłowy tekstu przekształconego. Oba te języki mogą się wzajemnie korygować, krytykować i modyfikować. Możliwe jest przejście od prawidłowego języka autora tekstu do prawidłowego języka interpretatora. I tu język prawidłowy autora tekstu można nazwać „Interpretandum”. To jest to, co powinno być interpretowane, rozumiane lub tłumaczone, zaś język prawidłowy interpretatora można nazwać „Interpretans”, czyli ten, za pomocą którego dokonuje się interpretacji, rozumienia lub tłumaczenia. W teologii jest więc miejsce dla właściwej hermeneutyki. Naukowa hermeneutyka, która zresztą zakłada analizę językową, stanowi tu przejście od prawidłowego języka analizowanego tekstu do prawidłowego języka interpretatora. Można też powiedzieć, że jest ona rozumieniem systematycznie uporządkowanego tekstu za pośrednictwem systematycznie uporządkowanego języka.
    The theological hermeneutics of the language of faith proposed by A. Grabner-Haider is a theological method of explaining, understanding and interpreting the entirety of the language of faith. This Austrian methodologist of religion distinguishes in a programmatic way between the scientific and the pre-scientific, pragmatic type of interpretation and argumentation. Grabner-Haider is exactly right in observing that this primary divide leads to another one: between two canonical logical languages (Orthosprache). The former is the canonical language of an interpreter, which is used indirectly to talk about the subject matter of the text, while the latter is the canonical language of the transposed text. Both these languages can interact by reciprocal corrections, critical approaches and modifications. It is possible to move past the canonical language of the text’s author towards the canonical language of its interpreter. In this case, the canonical language of the author can be labelled “Interpretandum.” This means the text that is subject to interpretation, understanding or translation. The canonical language of the interpreter, on the other hand, can be labelled “Interpretans,” that is the one utilized for interpretation, understanding or translation. Consequently, it makes sense to believe that theology allows space for hermeneutics proper. The scientific type of hermeneutics, which as such assumes a need for language analysis, marks a passage from the canonical language of the analysed text to the canonical language of the interpreter. One can also say that scientific hermeneutics is a kind of understanding of a systematically ordered text via a systematically ordered language.

    In contemporary humanist reflection nearly every problem is posed and interpreted on the basis of the language that is the point of departure. This co-dependence is present also in the field of theology, and perhaps it is even more significant there. The problem of the language shows the tension, or maybe even contradiction, between the conviction about inadequacy of every human language in the face of the mystery of God, and the belief that actually this language refers to God Himself. The truth about an analogous and symbolical character of the theological language is a solution to this problem. Finally the work and the person of Jesus Christ (analogia Christi) is the basis for adequacy of the language in theology.
