The aim of the paper is to present an analysis of the thematic-rematic structure of Polish equivalents of interrogative sentences such as What do you think he had done?, namely of questions about some component of subordinate clause. In Polish, an interrogative pronoun has to be placed within the subordinate clause (it can be moved to the beginning of the sentence, but such an operation is connected with the contrastive intonation of the pronoun). The author claims that questions of the given type are to be interpret just as other wh-questions. She cites the theory of thematic-rematic structure of questions of A. Bogusławski and modifies this theory in order to account for interrogative sentences with counter-factive predicates, such as to lie.

The article discusses Polish sentences which are based on the same pattern: '...w taki sposób, że...'. The semantic analysis of phrases with the sequence sposób 'manner' has shown that the basic context for the concept of a way, or manner, of doing something accounts for the relational character of this idea. The relation in question occurs between the action, which is mentioned in a sentence, and its description. This meaning can be found/indicated thanks to the thematic-rhematic structure of sentence which distinguishes two functions of '... w taki sposób, że...': expressing the process of doing something, and expressing the manner of doing the thing in question.

How to analyze contextuality of metatextual language units? Notes on the relation: TRS – particle semanticsThe presented article is devoted to further (after Kisiel 2010) discussion about contextuality of metatextual language units, especially particles. Having selected contextual particles as an example, the author shows how specific structuralisation of TRS is strictly connected with particle meaning. The observation leads to the conclusion that examination of TRS cannot be avoided when analysing particles. Untangling particles meaning has to be based on describing the TRS they work on. Such a procedure has been only recently applied to Polish lexicography.

Research background: Although agricultural competitiveness is not a new topic, it is worth noting that it has recently come back to the attention of researchers due to various factors such as climate change, food security, price uncertainty, or structural transformation. Consequently, a growing number of articles have emerged on this subject, leading to shifts in overarching research trends and the structure of research within this domain. Purpose of the article: This study aims to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the research constituents within the field of agricultural competitiveness. Additionally, it seeks to unveil the intellectual and cognitive frameworks spanning the years 1990 to 2022. This exploration will enable the identification of thematic clusters that both shape and guide the field, shedding light on current research trends. Methods: This research employs bibliometric analysis, specifically employing performance analysis and science mapping techniques like bibliographic coupling and co-word analyses. These tools are harnessed to scrutinize the constituents of research and the underlying intellectual and cognitive structures inherent to the agricultural competitiveness field. A dataset of 622 articles from the Web of Science database was subjected to analysis using the VOSviewer software. Findings & value added: The findings prominently illustrate a notable surge in research activity within this domain, with a substantial proportion of articles originating from the United States. The study further identifies six distinct research topics within agricultural competitiveness: (1) energy efficiency and bioenergy, (2) price fluctuation, uncertainty, and market behavior, (3) structural transformation of agriculture, (4) rural development, (5) policy issues, and (6) climate change. Moreover, the research offers insights into potential future research avenues. The uniqueness and value of this work stem from its pioneering approach, being the first to synthesize agricultural competitiveness research through an amalgamation of bibliometric techniques. Furthermore, the study contributes substantially to the theoretical advancement of agricultural competitiveness research.

The author reflects upon a possible empirical interpretation of Wittgenstein's well known thesis 7 in his Tractatus, as applied to some problems encountered when dealing with TRS. The most general idea is that TRS is what 'shows', in Wittgenstein's sense, rather than what can be rendered in terms of words; the reason being the threatening infinite regress behind any attempt at reducing the phenomena of TRS to primitive concepts as represented by definite segmental units. Subsequently, the author touches upon certain more specific themes in the relevant domain. One of them is the problem of how to account for non-restrictive attributes or "appositions". The author stresses the fact that they do not yield to interpretation in terms of something p such that 'speaker said that p'. Another issue is that of an adequate interpretation of 'I'. The author shows irreparable inadequacies inherent in Wierzbicka's as well as in his own (previous) accounts of 'I'. According to his new proposal, 'I' is equivalent to 'someone' with the first subscript (in an arbitrary list of subscripts) appended to the organism / body of the current speaker; the latter just shows in Wittgenstein's sense.

Th is paper examines the thematic structure of written media texts published in two national Polish and British dailies, namely Gazeta Wyborcza and Th e Guardian. Th e investigation, based on traditional content analysis methods, includes over a thousand articles published between January 14, 2010 and February 10, 2010. Th e analysis of data includes a study of frequency of occurrence of individual topics. Results are interpreted with reference to Hofstede’s 5D model and Hall’s division of societies into high-context and low-context cultures. Th e investigation reveals signifi cant correlation between the frequency of occurrence of individual topics and cultural patterns characteristic to national culture, especially in the dimensions of uncertainty avoidance and individualism vs. collectivism. It is argued that the results of the study support a belief that culture wields an infl uence on language. Th e author concludes that the impact that culture has on language in press starts at the level of news values — the criteria of prominence of media texts.

The paper examines the relationship between the abstractly understood Thematic-Rhematic Structure (TRS) of utterances, a theoretical approach initiated by Bogusławski (1977), and the "online" processing and interpretation of utterances in real time by the hearer. Focusin on three Polish examples, we propose a more dynamic approach to TRS based on ideas from Relevance Theory (Sperber and Wilson 1995), and redefine the notions "theme" and "rheme" in dynamic terms, from hearer's perspective. We present a formalis for modeling how the multi-level nature of TRS emerges out of real-time processing mechanisms: different theme-rheme divisions may arise at different (earlier or later) stages of processing. A main claim is that presuppositional and stylistic effects related to the flexibility of sentence stress position and word order in Polish can be explained well in such a dynamic model. On the sub-utterance level, both stress position and word order ("exponents" of TSR) serve to guide the hearer's investment of effort into positing and verifying hypotheses about the explicit and implicit content of the utterance as a whole, while processing by the hearer is still underway.

The aim of the article is to survey the markers of the thematic-rhematic structure in Latin. Since Latin is an inflected language with so called 'free' (or rather 'flexible') word order, the word order itself is the main marker of the thematic-rhematic structure. Besides word order, there are also other means serving as markers of theme or rheme in Latin. Rheme can be indicated by the cleft construction, well known in many languages. More varied markers serve to express the theme constituent. Among them there are the so-called correlative constructions qui/quod... is/id, syntactically independent propositional phrases de + ablativus, the so-called nominativus pendens, and the expression quod pertinent ad... However, the means mentioned above seem to be the emphatic markers of the thematic-rhematic structure.

Omawiana operacja wprowadza do wypowiedzi ukryty kontrast, wskazując, że mowa w niej właśnie o X, a nie o jakimkolwiek innym możliwym do pomyślenia temacie ani też nie o obiekcie, który można by wybrać z jakiejś sygnalizowanej wcześniej klasy. Towarzyszy jej następująca intencja: ‘mówię o X, a nie o Y, Z... itp.’. Zaciera ona wyrazistość podziału na część tematyczną i rematyczną i tym samym wpisuje się w charakterystyczną dla Norwida strategię mówienia, w której zarówno główny temat, jak i remat wypowiedzenia wydają się równie ważne.
Topicalization, understood as highlighting the topic of an utterance, has different syntactic, lexical, and punctuational exponents. Punctuational exponents are specific to Norwid, constituting a peculiar equivalent of suprasegmental exponents of the thematic-thematic structure in a written text. The discussed operation introduces a hidden contrast, indicating that the topic of an utterance is X rather than any other conceivable topic, or an object which could be selected from a previously signaled class. This is accompanied by the following intention: ‘I am talking about X, not about Y, Z… etc.’, This blurs the clear distinction into the thematic and rhematic part, and hence represents Norwid’s characteristic strategy of speaking, in which the main topic and rhemat seem equally important.

In the article I consider the problem of sentence stress and its influence on the semantics of the adverbs modifying information on the intentionality of actions, i.e. expressions such as niechcący 'unwillingly', nieświadomie 'unconsciously', przypadkiem 'accidentally', celowo 'on purpose', specjalnie 'intentionally' etc., with special attention paid to the two expressions from this class -niechcący and przypadkiem. I try to demonstrate how their interpretation may differ according to the position they take in the sentence structure. I assume that these units of language - as they are adverbs - belong primarily to the dictum of the sentence, which means that one should take the rhematic position as basic in the explication; all the differences that result from moving them to the thematic dictum should be then intepreted as secondary (as the effect of thematizing).

Artykuł jest syntetycznym przeglądem polskiego piśmiennictwa językoznawczego z lat 1977–1997 pod kątem publikacji poświęconych strukturze tematyczno-rematycznej wypowiedzi. Umowne granice opisywanego okresu wyznaczają daty publikacji dwóch ważnych monografii (Bogusławski 1977, Wajszczuk 1997). W kolejnych paragrafach zebrane są m.in. informacje o pionierskich publikacjach z lat 70. XX w., najważniejszych kierunkach badań nad STR prowadzonych przez polskich językoznawców we wskazanym okresie (1977–1997), a także o pracach zorientowanych bardziej dydaktycznie.
The article is a synthetic review of Polish linguistic literature 1977–1997 from the point of view of publications devoted to the thematic-rhematic structure of utterances. The conventional boundaries of the described period are marked by the publication dates of two important monographs (Bogusławski 1977, Wajszczuk 1997). The following paragraphs gather information about, among other things, pioneering publications from the 1970s, the most important directions of STR research carried out by Polish linguists in the period indicated (1977–1997), as well as more didactically oriented works.

The paper presents the semantic structure of verb borrowing from German going out of use during the New Polish period. Lexical material included 86 semantic units extracted from Słownik języka polskiego (dictionary of Polish language) edited by Witold Doroszewski described as: archaic, obsolete, going out of use. The semantic structure shows that significant part of vocabulary was collected in 2 fields: ‹‹Work life›› and ‹‹Social behavior in the community›› occurring to extralinguistic circumstances like changes of work organization and realities of social life.

Artykuł wskazuje na główne problemy wiążące się z interpretacją wybranych wypowiedzeń z Vade-mecum oraz proponuje nową formułę opisu praktyki zdaniotwórczej Norwida. Przyjęcie założenia, że właściwym przedmiotem analizy nie są abstrakcyjne struktury składniowe, ale empiryczne, użyte i zaktualizowane wypowiedzenia, pociąga za sobą konieczność uwzględnienia ich wielowarstwowości i poziomów innych niż składniowy, zwłaszcza struktury tematyczno-rematycznej i metatekstu. Jak pokazują zaprezentowane analizy, wzięcie pod uwagę tych elementów pozwala z powodzeniem rozstrzygać niektóre dylematy interpretacyjne. Proponowane poszerzenie perspektywy oglądu umożliwia również uchwycenie cech, które współtworzą specyfikę Norwidowej „składni”, uruchamiającej i wykorzystującej różne poziomy wypowiedzenia.
This article indicates key problems related to the interpretation of selected enunciations in Vade- mecum,and develops a new formula for describing Norwid’s syntactic strategies. The assumption that the subject of analysis is not comprised by abstract syntactic structures but empirical, used and actualized enunciations entails the necessity to acknowledge their multi-layered character and the import of other levels than that of syntax, especially thematic-rhematic structure and metatext. As presented analyses show, taking these aspects into account helps to successfully settle certain interpretative dilemmas. The proposed expansion of perspective also allows one to grasp certain features that contribute to the specificity of Norwid’s syntax, which mobilizes and utilizes various levels of enunciation.
