The Christian spiritual life, the essence of which is holiness, needs an example that sheds clear light on the path of love for God and neighbor. In her teachings, Bl. Bolesława Lament indicates that the example of the Holy Family of Nazareth’s life is especially helpful in for man’s spiritual development. The Holy Family’s example can help shape the spiritual life of believers according to the Incarnation. The essence of the Holy Family’s example is its deep focus on the mystery of Incarnation and, thus, union with Christ, the Incarnate Word. Moreover, the hidden life of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph provides a solid foundation on which apostolic life can take on form.

The spiritual life constitutes an integral experience of any person being led by the Holy Spirit toward full communion with God. It is never something abstract, divorced from Sitz im Leben, in either the psychological aspect or the socio-cultural dimension, thus it always bears certain signs of one’s temperament, environment, and history. The present paper proposes a methodology of research into the natural basis of the spiritual life (psychological and socio-cultural), which influences the way God’s grace is received and experienced. The natural structures of the spiritual life constitute the ground, which is submitted to God’s salvific action and bears fruit in various forms. The description of the spiritual life demands the use of the appropriate methodology, which can be based on the combination of the doctrinal-sapiential (deductive) approach and the existential-anthropological (inductive) approach. An important auxiliary role in the description of the spiritual phenomenon can be played by psychological methods, for instance those that derive from the psycho-biographical approach, which allows us to capture what is unique in human functioning.

Dzieje Kościoła pokazują, że Boże miłosierdzie od zawsze było siłą dająca możliwość osiągania świętości życia tym, którzy bezgranicznie ufają Bogu. Stąd miłosierdzie jest, w jakimś sensie, kuźnią świętości życia chrześcijan, gdyż zawiera w sobie istotę Ewangelii. Boże miłosierdzie to również wymiar osobistego zaangażowania się w życie duchowe przepełnione łaską miłości i nadzieją na zbawienie. Dzięki miłosierdziu człowiek przekonuje się, że to nie grzech zwycięża, lecz drogą łaski oczyszczenia Bóg dalej mieszka w swoim stworzeniu. Dziś, jak nigdy dotąd, jest wielka potrzeba nowej wrażliwości i wyobraźni na to, co Boskie i święte. 
The Church history demonstrates that the Divine mercy has always been a force that makes it possible to achieve the holiness of life to those who trust God immensely. Hence, mercy is, in a sense, the forge of the sanctity of Christian life as it contains the essence of the Gospel. God’s mercy is also a dimension of personal commitment to spiritual life filled with the grace of love and the hope of salvation. Because of mercy we realise that it is not the sin that dominates, but that, through the grace of purification, God still lives in his creation. Today as never before a new sensitivity and imagination is needed for the divine and the sacred.

Lorette Nobécourt is a living French writer (she was born in 1968). In her work takes place a quest of the "Word", the holy name she gives to literature. A great feeling of spirituality comes out from her texts. From 1999 to 2012 she wrote three texts about three different pictural works : La Raie by Chardin (french painter), L’Ordre du monde by Sujata Bajaj (indian artist) and L’Usage des jours by Guillaume Bardet (french designer). Trough her texts appears her literary and spiritual evolution. Literature proved to be a spiritual ritual, like a memento mori, but also an real prayer, an hymn in praise of the « living life ».

St. Urszula Ledóchowska- the founder of the Ursulines Sisters of the Order of Dying Heart of Jesus (Sióstr Urszulanek Serca Jezusa Konającego) – whose personality is usually discribed by the formula – Polish and European – lived and worked in difficult times in the first half of the twentieth century. Above all, she was the mistress of the spiritual life. In her attitude towards the the world and people, she was able to perfectly combine contemplation and activity. In the center of her spirituality, she has placed the mystery of Jesus Crucified – The Dying Heart and His Mother. A strong faith in God, putting trust in Him, should – according to her beliefs – shape human life that should be giving constant witness to the Risen Christ. At the same time the Saint was a person deeply involved in the problems of everyday life. Since her entrance to the Ursulines (Urszulanki) in Kraków, St. Urszula Ledóchowska gave great importance of girls education. During her stays in Russia, Sweden, Denmark, and then after returning to the free Poland, to Pniewy; she established schools with a modern program of education, where intellectual development was closely connected with the development of spiritual and religious. The school was supposed to be a community shaped like a ‘small church’ and its purpose was to teach and educate. St. Urszula Ledóchowska demanded from the teachers not only education and good manners, but primarily tolerance and ‘cheerfulness’ that comes from the certainty of faith in God. Therefore, her life was ‘a rosary embodied in an act’ and the act were Faith, Hope and Love.

Pouczenia zawierają wiele odniesień do duchowości hezychastycznej, którą Teofan nie tylko sam praktykował, ale i wprowadzał w jej arkana swoje córki duchowe.W perspektywie zaleceń hezychastycznych w artykule została przedstawiona charakterystyka wewnętrznego i zewnętrznego życia mnichów i mniszek oraz pojmowanie wspólnoty monastycznej jako ikony Kościoła.
The Instructions to the Reverend Nuns About What Monastic Life Requires Of Them is the collection of 20 sermons of the Orthodox bishop and archimandrite St. Theophan the Recluse (1815-1894). He preached them out to the nuns from different hermitages of the Diocese of Tambov and the Diocese of Vladimir of the Russian Orthodox Church in the years 1859-1864. The main theme of The Instructions is revealing of the aim and the sense of monastic life, especially in its community aspect. The Instructions include many references to the hesychast spirituality. Theophan not only practiced it himself, but introduced into it his spiritual daughters as well. In view of the hesychast advices, the article presents the characteristic of the interior and exterior life of the monks and nuns and understanding of the monastic community as an icon of the Church.

John Paul II during his pontificate always reminded of the standing value of human life, of a complete need of respecting it. The man, despite of the stage of his life, has got the right to live longer, to develop, and to satisfy his needs. Today, however, we can notice that family situation has reached crisis point. This is true also about the Polish family. The statement saying that the recall to accept the abortion law is a regress on the way to democracy, and it is one of the biggest absurdities, which can be told by the thinking man. What makes sense for the country which is going to exist, is to serve- without exceptions- and to protect the lifethe fundamental thing of the world. This is why the attempt to kill the unborn people made under the majesty of the law is the democracy suicide, the stroke imposed into its heart. The catholic church has become alarmed with the lack of respect for the natural laws and for the disappearance of the life value. It is confirmed by the huge amount of the Church Documents devoted to this question. The catholic church is definitely against the abortion. To support this point many different pastoral forms of protection the unborn were worked out and introduced to the church life. The pastoral aims taken up for that are the following: the prayers, intensifying the knowledge, starting the Holly Life Days or Weeks, the Prayer Crusade to Protect the Conceived Children, the Spiritual Adoption of the Conceived Child, the Lonely Mothers’ Houses, the Window to the Life.

Article paying attention to the quantitative growth of the elderly population, brings up the subject ethical indexation of old age in the context of the crisis associated with the fear of the inevitable approach of death, and the same doubts about the meaning of life. Subject important in itself, but also because of the a strong cult of youth, widely prevalent in popular culture and ideology of consumerism. The consequence for this phenomenon has become almost a general reducing social status of the elderly, and consequently, changes in of attitudes of people and social thinking about old age. Author writing about the necessity of finding the meaning of life in old age, encourages to appreciate old age. The article is a kind of postulates to create a new axiology of old age based on a theological value as a significant stage eschatological road for connecting with God.

In the article, I present a proposal for a new approach to spirituality in the field of psychology – the spiritual sensitivity (a disposition to experience spirituality, manifested in the embracement of the nature of things in the transcendent and final perspective, in moral sensitivity, and the ability to find meaning in paradoxical and limiting situations), which consists of individual, interconnected competences (Holism and Harmony Wisdom, Awareness, Meaning; Religiosity and Faith; Ethics and Moral Sensitivity/Conscience; Openness to  Other People; Spiritual Commitment; Aesthetic Sensitivity). The proposed theoretical framework relates spirituality – abstract, ideational realm – to the specific, individualized, everyday life of a person, i.e. to the selection of objectives and measures for their implementation, as well as it allows to operationalization the spirituality in easier way in research studies. In the article, I briefly present the method for measuring spiritual sensitivity – Spiritual Sensitivity Inventory (SSI) (Straś-Romanowska, Kowal, Kapała) – and indicate some regularities detected in a series of studies on the nature of the phenomenon and its role in human life, e.g. its importance for the sense of subjectivity and subjective quality of life of people.
W artykule została przedstawiona propozycja nowego sposobu ujmowania duchowości w obszarze psychologii jako wrażliwości duchowej (dyspozycja do doświadczania duchowości przejawiająca się w ujmowaniu zdarzeń w perspektywie transcendentnej i ostatecznej, we wrażliwości moralnej oraz umiejętności odnajdywania sensu w sytuacjach paradoksalnych i granicznych), na którą składają się poszczególne, połączone ze sobą kompetencje (Holizm i Harmonia; Mądrość, Świadomość, Sens; Religijność i Wiara; Wrażliwość Etyczno-Moralna/Sumienie; Otwartość na Drugą Osobę; Zaangażowanie Duchowe; Wrażliwość Estetyczna). Proponowane ramy teoretyczne odnoszą duchowość (sferę abstrakcyjną, ideacyjną) do konkretnego, codziennego, zindywidualizowanego życia osoby, np. do wyboru celów i środków służących do ich realizacji. Ponadto pozwalają na jej łatwiejszą operacjonalizację w badaniach naukowych. W ramach omówienia krótko została zaprezentowana metoda pomiaru wrażliwości duchowej – Inwentarz Wrażliwości Duchowej (SSI) (Straś-Romanowska, Kowal, Kapała) oraz zasygnalizowano niektóre prawidłowości wykryte w serii badań, dotyczącyce natury zjawiska i jego roli w życiu człowieka, np. znaczenia dla poczucia podmiotowości i subiektywnej jakości życia osoby.

Dla protagonisty współczesnej dialogiki, Martina Bubera, życie duchowe stanowi nie tyle ontyczny wyróżnik istnienia człowieka, ile szansę, przed którą człowiek stoi i którą powinien wykorzystać z uwagi na swoją dialogiczną genezę, która zarazem określa specyficzny horyzont jego egzystowania. Egzystowania niepodobna zredukować do istnienia obiektu pośród innych obiektów, gdyż może ono i powinno wyrażać się obecnością – byciem osoby wobec innych osób, byciem Ja wobec Ty. Podstawowa różnica między „życiem duchowym” a „życiem w duchu” polega na tym, że pierwsze, w odróżnieniu od drugiego, nie zawsze bywa dialogiczne oraz na tym, że nie zawsze uzyskuje ono wymiar etyczny i niejednokrotnie spełnia się w samym tylko wymiarze estetycznym. Tymczasem życie w duchu wskazuje na transcendentny status i proweniencję ducha, który nie może być postrzegany w kategoriach zjawiska będącego rezultatem kulturowego progresu – jako sublimacja lub jako projekcja tego, co immanentnie ludzkie.
For Martin Buber, the protagonist of the modern philosophy of dialogue, spiritual life is not an ontic distinction of human existence, but an opportunity that man has and should use because of his dialogical genesis, which determines the particular horizon of his being. Existing cannot be reduced merely to the existence of a given object among others, since it may and ought to be expressed via presence – being a person to other people, being ‘I’ to ‘You’. The fundamental difference between ‘spiritual life’ and ‘living in the spirit’ lies in the fact that the former, as opposed to the latter, does not always happen to be dialogical, that it does not always have an ethical dimension, and often fulfils itself in an aesthetic dimension only. On the other hand, living in the spirit indicates a transcendental status and the provenance of the spirit, which cannot be perceived as the result of cultural progress – it is regarded as the sublimation or projection of what is immanently human.

This paper takes up Hadot’s call for more comparative work on Buddhism and Philosophy as a Way of Life by comparing Zen Master Hakuin Ekaku’s artwork Pilgrims with the graffiti artist Banksy’s The Street is in Play. Beyond the striking similarities in form and apparent tongue-in-cheek criticism of graffiti, this paper explains the context of Hakuin’s artwork and the text of his painting before exploring the importance of graffiti in the Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch. I argue that by taking up Hadot’s call for more comparative work we find that Hakuin’s Zen bears fruitful points of comparison with Hadot’s account of philosophy as a way of life. Furthermore, a comparison of the two artworks of Banksy and Hakuin helps us better understand both figures via thematic elements of humor and socially disruptive writings.

Opis:
This article deals with manual labour in the life of monks as taught by St. Augustine in his treatise De opere monachorum. It describes the social context of the theme with particular reference to the situation in monastic communities of Carthage. Many monks in St. Augustine’s time were against manual labour. The article presents the structure of the Saint’s argumentation. St. Augustine clearly was in favour of the manual work of monks -and indirectly also of that of all Christians. The article analyses his exegesis of two Biblical texts (Mt 6:25-34 and 2Thess 3:10) that explain the need and beauty of work for daily spiritual growth. This is shown primarily on the basis of the teaching and example of the Apostle St. Paul, who was employed in various ways. Then the position of St. Augustine is discussed, according to whom the working monk gains the means of his support, cooperates with the Creator and continues His creative achievement. Work that allows the monk to attain some profit in temporal life and maintains the necessary equilibrium between the needs of the body and soul is shown above all to be a means for the attaining of the reward of eternal life. The monk, however, may be dispensed of manual labour, in part or even totally, in view of pastoral ministry, which plays a primary role in his vocation and mission.

Autor poddaje teologicznej analizie pojęcie migracji ascetycznej pojawiające się w życiu monastycznym. Stara się udowodnić, że niektóre formy życia mnichów przypominają duchową pielgrzymkę. Mnisi wykonują ruch w fizycznej sferze, odchodząc w odosobnione miejsce. Podejmują tam różne formy pokuty. To pozwala im na wejście w głębię swojego serca, poświęcenie się modlitwie i medytacji. Z drugiej strony spojrzenie z dystansu na doczesny świat i służenie światu zdobytą przez siebie mądrością. Autor interpretuje rzeczone pojęcia i formy monastyczne w świetle współczesnych dokumentów Kościoła. Formy realizowane dziś w życiu osób konsekrowanych, zwłaszcza współczesnych pustelników i zakonów kontemplacyjnych, stanowią kontynuację wielowiekowych doświadczeń i tradycji. Są nimi doświadczanie samotności i ograniczenie przestrzeni życia w celu osiągania wyżyn duchowości. Mnisi naśladują Paschę Chrystusa, już dziś duchowo pielgrzymując do radości nieba. Także wysiłek zdążania do świętości jest charakterystycznym elementem ich duchowej wędrówki. Autor wspomina istniejące w historii zjawisko mnichów – pielgrzymów wędrujących dla Chrystusa, głoszących Ewangelię i przyjmujących ciągłą podróż jako formę ascezy, jak też pielgrzymowanie do pustelników, u których szukano wsparcia. Kościół w życiu mnichów – pustelników znajduje wzór dla swej ponadczasowej duszpasterskiej misji. Kościół bowiem jest wspólnotą pielgrzymów, a życie każdego chrześcijanina jest pielgrzymką.
The author performs a theological analysis of a concept of „ascetic migration” arising in monastic life. The author endeavours to prove, that various forms of monastic life resemble a spiritual journey. Monks coming to an isolated place move physically, where they perform various acts of penance. On the one hand, it enables them to enter the depths of their hearts, devote themselves to prayer and meditation. On the other hand, seclusion, withdrawal from the present world, having a detached look at it result in acquiring wisdom, which allows them to minister to the world. The author interprets the concepts mentioned above and forms of monastic life in the light of a contemporary Church documents. Nowadays, ways of life led by the consecrated, especially by hermits and members of contemplative orders have been continuation of centuries-old tradition and experience, which are solitude and limited living space. These means are used in order to reach spiritual heights. Monks imitate Christ’s Passover here, on earth, by making a spiritual pilgrimage to the joy of heaven. An effort of striving toward holiness is a characteristic element of their spiritual journey as well. The author mentions two phenomena emerging in history such as: monks-pilgrims walking for Christ, who preached the Gospel and practiced unceasing journey as a form of asceticism and hermits to whom people seeking support used to come. The Church finds life of a monk-hermit as a model for her timeless, pastoral mission. This is because the Church is a community of pilgrims and life of each Christian is a pilgrimage.
