Aim. The aim of the study was to analyze the impact of the disease (breast cancer) and treatment on sexuality patients after mastectomy as part of the project „Sexuality women after mastectomy,” N N404 165640. Materials and methods. Examined were 120 women, firstly 18 months and then again 5 years after radical mastectomy. To investigate their sexual satisfaction and quality of life, self-prepared surveys and standardized questionnaires such as HADS, SQoL-F, QLQBR23 and QLQ-C30 were used. Results. On the basis of these studies it has been shown that breast cancer affects the sexuality and the quality of life of women both 18 months and five years after radical mastectomy. The sexuality of women 18 months after the surgery has been defined as less severe than that in the case of women five years after the surgery. Both groups of women agreed that the most important aspect to them is the emotional contact. A similar level of perceived anxiety and depression have been found among the respondents.

Opis:
In this paper, we are discussing the question of particular attitudes expressed by the professionals (teachers and therapists) in the context of sexual abuse of people (including children) with intellectual disabilities (ID) which we identify as tacit un-knowledge. Drawing from the concept of tacit knowledge introduced by Michael Po-lanyi we are looking closely into some sort of professional passivity and indulgence in reacting to the sexual abuse of people with ID and lack of adequate professional education and training on the other hand. These observations led us to formulate a Polanyi-inspired notion of un-knowledge expressed as a culture-based response to directly or indirectly reported incidents of sexual abuse of people with ID. Data discussed in this paper is a part of a broader research project on sexual abuse of people with disabilities in the narratives of teachers and therapists conducted by one of the authors. The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relation-ships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this article.

Opis:
“A Sketch of the Past” is an essay in which Virginia Woolf recollects her childhood memories and reflects upon certain events, while trying to understand why she remembers them and forgets others. She mentions the concept “moments of being”, though without providing the reader with a clear definition. The idea refers to the bits of our lives in which we experience something beyond the ordinary daily routine – the intense feeling of being alive. The author describes it as “a sudden violent shock; something happened so violently that I have remembered it all my life” (Woolf, A Sketch of the Past 71) and contrasts such intense revelatory moments with “the cotton wool” (70) of non-being that defines most of our living. The concept “moments of being” is of great importance to the writer, as she herself states: ”And so I go on to suppose that the shock-receiving capacity is what makes me a writer” (72). The present article discusses the concept “moments of being” and attempts to capture its meaning by analysing selected passages from one of Virginia Woolf’s most famous novels, Mrs Dalloway.

Opis:
Po ucieczce z niemieckiego obozu śmierci w Sobiborze 14 października 1943 r. Dov Freiberg i Semyon Rozenfeld ukrywali się w okolicach Chełma do przybycia Armii Czerwonej w lipcu 1944 r. W 1945 r. Freiberg złożył zeznanie przed Centralną Żydowską Komisją Historyczną, a w 1988 r. opublikował obszerne wspomnienia zatytułowane To Survive Sobibor (Przetrwać Sobibór).
After escaping the German mass killing facility in Sobibór on 14 October 1943, Dov Freiberg and Semyon Rozenfeld survived in hiding near Chelm until the arrival of the Red Army in July 1944. In 1945, Freiberg testified before the Central Jewish Historical Commission, and in 1988, he published his much more extensive memoirs To Survive Sobibor. Both texts cover the period of hiding, during which Freiberg, Rozenfeld and the brothers Dawid and Józef Serczuk were taken in by two women. The two sources reveal an episode of male sexual barter, as the male group established rational relationships with the two women in order to stabilize a precarious situation. By comparing both of Freiberg’s texts, it becomes clear that so-called late testimonies are rich and unjustly underrated source-material.

Last year, Homini Publishing House published a Polish edition of The Latin Sexual Vocabulary by J.N. Adams. The translation was made by J. Janik. In comparison with the original English version, the Polish edition has been enriched with translations of its Latin quotations. In this paper, I will carry out a critical review of the Polish edition of the book.Hoc superiore anno in lucem prodiit Polona editio libri The Latin Sexual Vocabulary a I.N. Adams conscripti, quem Polonice reddendum curavit Ioanna Janik.

Modern and Post-Modern discourse espouses a subjective understanding of gender. As a result, confusing new problems erupt in discussions as practical as marriage and as theoretical as questions of human meaning and purpose. Catholic theology, drawing primarily from the personalistic approach to gender contained in Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body, provides a consistent account of gender that is also compatible with the best evidence available in support of a purely rational approach. A defense of this approach could lead to a better understanding of ourselves and our relationships, to the betterment of culture as a whole.

Opis:
Celem niniejszego artykułu jest ukazanie ludzkiej seksualności w świetle posoborowego nauczania Kościoła katolickiego. Najpierw autor dokonuje wyjaśnienia najważniejszych terminów, a potem ukazuje drogę do pozytywnego i całościowego ujęcia ludzkiej seksualności w nauczaniu Kościoła. Najpełniej i w sposób pozytywny została ona ujęta dopiero w posoborowym nauczaniu Kościoła, a zwłaszcza papieży Jana Pawła II, Benedykta XVI oraz Franciszka.
The aim of the article is to discuss human sexuality in the context of the post-conciliar teachings of the Catholic church. First, the article clarifies the employed terminology to subsequently focus on the positive and comprehensive image of human sexuality in the church’s teachings. Further, the personal orientation and purposefulness of human sexuality is analyzed. Within the deductive method the following strategies have been deployed: analysis of source texts, interpretation, comparative analysis, synthesis, and deduction. The main conclusion of the article is that the Catholic church has been slowly uncovering the truth of human sexuality, for centuries having underscored its procreative goal. Human sexuality has been most fully and positively rendered in the post-conciliar teachings of the church, especially in the thought of Popes John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis.

The article proposes a critical reading of the father figure in Jonathan Littell’s The Kindly Ones. While taking into account various interpretative contributions to the analysis of thetheme, formerly neglected and subjected to Julia Kristeva’s theory of abject mother, this article explores an alternative, esthetic, culturally oriented approach to the phenomenon. By grouping together father and a man who, in the absence of the former, takes power over the son, the story’s protagonist, the figure of the father can be understood as a key-symbol of a Nazi perpetrator’s identity. However, the article aims to show that this image can stem from the specific cultural context of contemporary representations of Nazism and influence today’s perception of the perpetrators.

Opis:
Whereas the fields of poetic expression and pragmatist philosophy may seem some distance apart, a closer examination of the poetics literature from the early Greeks onward provides testimony to the more general viability of the pragmatist analysis of community life, particularly as this has come to be associated with pragmatism’s sociological derivative, symbolic interaction. Following a brief overview of the Greek, Roman, and Christian roots of contemporary fictional representations, attention is given to the ways that pragmatist concerns with human activity were addressed within the context of poetic expression in 12th-13th century France. Whereas the pre-Renaissance texts considered here exhibit pronounced attentiveness to Christian theology, they also build heavily on Latin sources (especially Virgil and Ovid [see Prus 2013a]). Among the early French poets who address the matters of human knowing and acting in more direct and consequential terms are: Alan de Lille (c. 1120-1203) who wrote The Plaint of Nature and Anticlaudianus; Andreas Capellanus (text, c. 1185) the author of The Art of Courtly Love; and Guillaume de Lorris (c. 1212-1237) and Jean de Meun (c. 1235-1305) who, in sequence, co-authored The Romance of the Rose. Given our interest in the ways in which those in the poetic community helped sustain an analytic focus on human lived experience, particular consideration is given to these early French authors’ attentiveness to (1) the relationships, identities, activities, and tactical engagements that people develop around romantic relationships; (2) the sense-making activities of those about whom they write, as well as their own interpretive practices as authors and analysts; (3) the ways in which the people within the communities that they portray knowingly grapple with religious and secular morality (and deviance); and (4) more generic features of human standpoints and relationships. Clearly, the poets referenced here are not the first to pursue matters of these sorts. However, their materials are important not only for their popular intrigues, creativity, and effectiveness in “moving poetics out of the dark ages” but also for encouraging a broader interest in considerations of the human condition than that defined by philosophy and rhetoric.

Opis:
For the ancient Mesoamericans the animal kingdom represented a way in which sacred forces could act on earth. For this reason they were considered representatives of the divine forces and, in turn, symbols of various concepts. Th is paper presents and analyzes some ideas about the symbolism of a particular animal, of which there is little written information: the scorpion. However, this time only two aspects of the way it was conceived will be analyzed. On one hand its identification as a sex offender, which linked it to peculiar concepts such as lust, sin and adultery. Furthermore, its negative charge, which linked it with punishment, bodily pain, the announcement of the death and conflict situations of life. Finally, to clarify these observations some areas are briefly highlighted where its image is associated with certain events that can be considered positive for human groups. To this inquiry it was necessary to use several pre-Hispanic and colonial sources. Therefore, the study of different elements with complex itself, such as sculpture, codices and chronicles was of invaluable aid. It was also essential to consider the testimony of ethnographic studies that allow us to track some old ideas still performing in contemporary indigenous peoples.
