Opis:: Artykuł charakteryzuje procesy demograficznego starzenia się miast województwa opolskiego w latach 1960–2007 na podstawie odsetka mieszkańców w wieku powyżej 60 lat wśród ogółu ludności oraz indeksu późnej starości, wyrażającego relacje liczby osób w wieku powyżej 80 lat do liczby osób przekraczających próg starości (60 lat). Województwo opolskie utworzono w 1950 r. na ziemiach włączonych w granice państwa polskiego po drugiej wojnie światowej. Wśród jego mieszkańców wyróżnić można dwie grupy ludności – miejscową (autochtoniczną) oraz napływową – które reprezentowały odmienne typy struktury demograficznej, rzutujące na przebieg procesów demograficznych w regionie w latach 1950–2007. Procesy te na Opolszczyźnie były też uwarunkowane intensywnymi migracjami (zwłaszcza ludzi młodych), mającymi wpływ na pogłębienie zjawiska starzenia się populacji regionu.
The article presented includes the characteristics of demographic ageing process in cities of Opole in years 1960–2007 based on the percentage share of aged 60+ in the total population and on ADL index (advanced old age index ) i.e. proportion of aged people (80 years old and more) to the whole group of people over 60 years old. Opole Voivodeship, formed in 1950, on the joined to Poland after World War II, is populated by the people of various regional roots. Two main groups can be identified: immigrant population and natives. The immigrant population settling on the territory of Opole voivodeship represented the demographically younger structure than the natives. It influenced further process of demographic changes including the present state of advanced demographic old age. In years 1950–2007 the demographic process of ageing in cities of Opole was progressing, reducing at the same time the differences in the scale of ageing between the cities on the territory populated by immigrants and the cities on the territory populated by the natives. The percentage share of aged 60+ in the total population decreased in the group of cities where natives dominated whereas the percentage share of aged 60+ in the total population increased in the cities on the territories populated by the immigrants.

Opis:: The aim of this article is to introduce volunteering and lifelong learning as activities that have positive impact on senior citizens’ quality of life. First, the author introduces the importance of different types of activities and their benefits for eldery people and the community. Next section in devoted to volunteering among the eldery (particularly the ways to promote this kind of activity in Poland) and University of the Third Age, i.e. an institution whose aim is to educate and stimulate pensioners. The last part of the article presents barriers to activity of senior citizens.

Opis:: The aim of this paper is to describe population ageing in member countries of the European Union and its dynamics in the period 1990-2030. Furthermore, we show chosen social consequences and challenges caused by demographic ageing. In the introduction, we present definition of the population ageing and describe measures used in the paper. The analytical part consists of three sections. The first one is about growth of older population (at the age of 65 and over, and 80 and over) in the years 1990-2030. The next one comprises an evaluation of progress in demographic change in the EU countries, which is based on chosen measures of population structure - aging index (population 65 and over to population 0-14), and potential support ratio (population 15-64 years to population 65 and over). In the analysis, we use also positional measures. The last part focuses on explaining regional differences in progress of demographic ageing of particular countries. The last section of the paper focuses on chosen socioeconomic consequences of ageing in the EU countries. One of them is an expected increase in number of disabled people. Another one is growth in the number of single person households of the elderly, who need familial and extra-familial care.

Opis:: The aim of this paper is to provide a statistical description of the demographic structure of the members of the Open Pension Funds as well as its dynamics. The paper also describes the process of ageing of the Open Pension Funds' members taking into account the whole operating period of the funds. Selected demographic measures were used to analyze the demographic structure changes of the funds' members in total and by sex and age. To describe the process of ageing some alternative measures based on central moments of the empirical distributions were employed. The analysis reveals a significant differences of the process of ageing between the funds.

Opis:: Population aging affects almost all areas of social life. In less than a quarter of a century, almost every third inhabitant of Poland will be 60 or over 60 years. Needs of society will change mainly due to the change in population age structure. The increasing need for care will be impossible to be satisfied only by the family. Greater involvement of informal support networks, NGOs, religious associations, local government and state will be required to ensure an adequate standard of care for seniors. The aim of this paper is to analyze the demographic, social and economic factors affecting the demand for nursing services provided in both the older person's living environment as well as in specialized institutions and the ability to meet the needs of care by shrinking and aging labor force. The paper first discusses the factors influencing the increasing demand for support. The second part discusses the factors affecting the ability to meet care needs.

Opis:: The process of ageing affects all the European Union Member States, including Poland. According to forecasts by the Central Statistical Office, in 2035, the population of Poland will decrease in relation to 2010 by more than 2 million, and the share of people aged 50+ in the total population will increase from 34.8% to 46.6% (Prognoza ludności 2009). In the context of current and projected demo-graphic changes, a discussion is taking place and actions are taken to – on the one hand – extend the period of Poles' economic activity and – one the other hand – implement age management systems in enterprises, enabling the efficient exploitation of the potential of workers aged 50+. The paper considers the problem of the situation of people aged 50+ in the Polish labour market. The main objective is to find out whether in Poland there is a need for the work performed by people aged 50+. The employers' views on work-ers 50+ and the possibilities and conditions of employment of this group are pre-sented. The paper uses and confronts statistics related to the labour market (BAEL) and the results of quantitative and qualitative research carried out by selected Polish research centres within the framework of projects co-financed from EU funds.

Opis:: Since the beginning of the twentieth century in Europe a process of aging is hastening. Initially the demographic transformation focused on the "old EU", now it is affecting the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, including Poland. Poland has exceeded the threshold of demographic old age in 1967. In 2010, the share of people aged over 65 in the total population of country amounted to about 13%. OECD forecasts show that in the year 2050 the elderly population (over 65 years old) will constitute 50% of the Polish population. The European Union and national governments face the challenge of mitigating the socio-economic effects of population aging. At EU, national and regional levels there are implemented the programs of active aging, affecting the elderly in the following dimensions: professional, social and individual. They are addressed primarily to the elderly, but also to other target groups. They counteract the ageism and build the awareness of demographic changes' processes. Education is an extremely important aspect of active aging. It performs two vital roles: delaying the individuals aging process, and furthermore, facilitates adaptation to old age. The essence of the article is to present the concept of active aging, and education functions it that. The study presents the educational activity of the elderly in Poland, too.

Celem niniejszego tekstu jest przedstawienie przyczyn i przebiegu wzrostu liczby osób w czwartym wieku w Polsce w trakcie ostatniego stulecia oraz długookresowych konsekwencji tych zmian. Szczególna rola przypisana została prezentacji społeczno-demograficznych charakterystyk tej podzbiorowości, z uwzględnieniem subpopulacji stulatków, z uwagi na specyfikę potrzeb osób bardzo starych.
Population ageing is a demographic phenomenon described as one with dual character – increase in number and percentage of older people is accompanied by very rapid increase in numbers of people aged 80 and more. The article is to present reasons, progress, and long-term consequences of the increase in numbers of the oldest old in Poland. Special attention will be paid to presentation basic socio-demographic characteristics of the subpopulation – with focus on centenarians – due to specificity of needs of the population under study.

Opis:: From the 1990s. we note the considerable decrease in the fertility rate in Poland and the rise in the proportion of persons aged 60 years and more in population. The article is to demonstrate the dynamics of changes of both processes and to correlation between the two processes. For the description of the changes in the value of the fertility rate and the share of persons aged over 60 years we use a linear function of the trend, and to describe the relationship of both processes multiple linear regression.

Opis:: The aging of the population both in the global and regional aspect causes a number of negative effects. The most important are: aging of the workforce as well as its loss, which sharpens the basic economic problem associated with limitation of resources. Particularly important is to initiate actions to activate senior people by increasing the age of ability to work as well as by introducing solutions which will increase absorption of these people's work to the labor market. The current situation of senior people on the labor market indicates that there are many barriers which prevent them from entering the labor market. The complexity of the problem requires a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach.

Opis:: Methods of spatial statistics are used to identify spatial patterns and spatial dependency. Testing occurrence of spatial dependency boils down to verify the hypothesis of the existence of spatial autocorrelation in the data spatially localized. The evaluation of spatial autocorrelation requires the knowledge of the extent and specificity of spatial diversity, i.e. diversity of characteristics of individual sites and geographic regions. The main objective of this paper is to study the dynamics of an aging population as well as analysis of the spatial dependences of the ageing index. Research will be conducted using measures of global and local spatial autocorrelation. The data used in analysis come from the Local Data Bank of the Central Statistical Office. All calculations and presented maps were made in the R CRAN.

Opis:: Elderly care and support in their daily lives is one of the most significant challenges of an ageing population. The increasing demand for various types of support (both in the community and in institutions) should be considered in the context of existing socioeconomic- cultural-demographic characteristics. This article presents models of care for dependent elderly people and the analysis how various models fit the situation of dependency care in Poland. Five models describing the dependencies and coupling between informal help provided within the family network and community support networks and formal help are: hierarchical compensatory model, substitutional model, specificity model, supplementation model, complementarity model. The organization of care for the elderly in Poland introduced by the authority can be established that is consistent with the hierarchical compensatory model. This model is most effective, but in Poland is still not completely implemented, and the fragmentation makes that seniors do not receive optimal support.
