Opis:
The poem Colantonio – S. Gierolamo e il Leone, although it was written as early as the end of the 1950s, translated abroad and published, among others in the German book Inschrift, does not appear in any Polish collection of the poet's lyrical poems. A Polish reader could find the mentioned text among the young poet's letters to Jerzy Zawiejski or in a special edition of “Dekada Literacka” published in 1999. Among the considerable number of experts on the works of the author of Inscription only Tomasz Garbol devoted some attention to it in his valuable monograph “Chrzest ziemi. Sacrum w poezji Zbigniewa Herberta (Baptism of the Earth. Sacrum in Zbigniew Herbert's Poetry). The history of the text and its inter-texts allows verification of some of the researcher's theses about its interpretation. It seems that the poem is first of all about the relation between “I” and “another”, about an encounter. It is not without a sense of humor that the poet writes that the unexpected intensity of relations between the figures went much beyond the expected form of a conventional contact, it surpassed not only the mental habits of the society, but also surprised the main protagonists, who, owing to it, suddenly felt challenged in their own being and forced to undergo a drastic existential change.

Opis:
Anton Makarenko’s novel The Pedagogical Poem had been published in 1934–1935; after 20 years it was finally filmed (The Pedagogical Poem by Alexei Maslukov and Mechislava Mayevskaya, 1955). This article is an analysis of a specific relationship between Makarenko’s text and the cinematic variant of the “Poem”. The nature of transformation of literary text into film text is complex. It requires not only the adaptation of the novel to the linguistic requirements of the movie. The typological distinctions between the language of literary and cinematic Poems concern not only two spheres of the functioning of these works, but also two types of culture in which they were brought to life. The literary Pedagogical Poem was created as an autonomous work against totalitarian discourse, however it still participates in it. The key to its reading (which is specific for totalitarian culture) analyzed in this text results from the main function of narratives of this culture, i.e. the transmission of units of its mythological universe.

Opis:
Constantine the Emperor was the head of the religions and cults approved by the Roman Empire’s law. Thanks to him the persecutions of the Christians came to a halt (the Edict of Milan from the year 313 AD). To standardize the date of Easter and the text of the Creed in the Roman Catholic Church the Emperor convened in the year 325 AD the first in the Christianity’s history council called the First Council of Nicaea. The title character of the poem is a priest who is suffering from being torn apart due to the doubts about faith. The author of the work uses the poetical language to convey the truths of the faith. The deliberations that God calls the ‘undeserving’ Constantine to fulfil the great mission lead the subject to reflections on the destiny of us all.

Opis:
Since the (re) structuring collective memory always implies particular political processes, in the case of Ivan Goran Kovačić and his narrative poem The Pit (Jama), the fundamental text of the Partisan canon of Croatian literature, it may be divided into two periods with a transitional watershed of the 90s (or the disintegration of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia) as a historical turning point. Post-Yugoslav revisionist processes of the memory of World War II, which then started, inevitably had to influence the “myth about Goran”, up to that time in the conventional memory constructed around three key points. The first was his leaving Zagreb, together with Vladimir Nazor, to join the Partisans; the second was the revelation of Ustasha crimes in the epic poem The Pit and third his death by a “chetnikʼs knife”, which he prophetically hinted at in his poem “My Tomb”. Furthermore, the critical reception of The Pit from its first edition takes place on two plans of expression – artistic (fine arts) and literary. These “two lives” of one epic poem had different destinies and also attached to themselves different memories including forgetting strategies of (re)structuring collective memory.

This article is the first literary analysis which shapes the specifics and means of poetics in the poem Krakow. The manuscript, in which the author used the pseudonym Adel, dates back to 1850. It was placed in the famous manuscript along with the well-known Belarusian anonymous poem Stepmom. The nature of artistic means used in the poem Krakow, suggests, that the real author of this work is the well-known writer Gabriel Puzynya (1815 – 1869). This conclusion confirms the author’s earlier statement that G. Puzynya is the most likely the author of the Belarusian poem Stepmom.

The article consists of three parts. In the first part, the author interprets the poem of A. Blok as a modernist variant of a “Petersburg Text”, in the second – proposes and explains the formula of the “translation functionalism”, and in the third part, uses it in the analysis of the three Polish translations of The Twelve. The author proves that each of the translators: Wacław Denhoff-Czarnocki, Seweryn Pollak and Wiktor Woroszylski choose a different principle of coherence of the text. This is shown both in the modeling of the city area as well as the social features of the characters. Consequently, three different interpretations of enigmatic epilogue are created, in which the revolutionaries are preceded by Christ carrying a “bloody flag”.

Opis:
The author tries to interpret in a new light a few motifs from Norwid's masterpiece. It turns out that talking about Chopin changes into remarks on his art, which causes a certain difficulty in differentiating these two planes (biography and music). The motif of the dropped lyre (l. 9) playing spontaneously after Orpheus' death allows stating that one of the basic themes of Chopin's Piano is the problem of the life of art after the death of the artist. The poem makes one ask about this particular mystery that decides about the value and immortality of a work of art. Next the historical background is characterized of the origin of the poem and the circumstances and consequences are described of the attempt on the life of Governor Berg, that is, of the events that are thought to be connected with the genesis of the poem. In the last part a new interpretation is presented of the famous ending of the poem (l. 114-117), in which the significance of irony is lessened and the possibility is proposed of an almost literal understanding of the text. It is suggested that the ideal reaching the cobbles should be understood as an analogy to Christ's Incarnation.

The article presents the relationship between Frédéric Chopin and Zygmunt Krasiński both on the biographical level and in the relationship between the word and the sound that Krasiński often wrote about in his letters. A special expression of the dialogue between poetry and music described by the poet are Chopin’s compositions to the words of poets contemporary to him, which is especially true about the words of the motto from Krasiński’s poem Ostatni (The last poem). It is extraordinary in the context of Chopin’s songs as it is not only a musical illustration, but also a sophisticated interpretation of the text through music. The attempts to present poetic content through musical notation presented in the article lead to the conclusion about Chopin as a conscious recipient of a literary work who, like Krasiński, saw in the symbiosis of word and sound the possibility for expressing internal experience.

The article critically examines various aspects of Leibniz’s philosophy, such as the theory of pre-established harmony and the concept of monads, and above all the notion of the best possible universe. Moreover, selected aspects of Voltaire’s and Leibniz’s thoughts are compared. The article discusses the origins of one of the most renown poetic volumes by Anna Kamieńska, A White Manuscript. Today, the history of this book can be reconstructed only partially, on the basis of two poetic notebooks from 1968–1970. Reading A White Manuscript in the context of those two manuscripts makes it possible to see the metamorphoses of particular poems (e.g. blurring of the tropes leading to cycles appearing inside the volume); it also allows us to discover that at the end of the 1960s there appeared in Kamieńska’s verses motifs that became important in her later poetry. It was while the poet was working on A White Manuscript that her fully original vision of corporeality emerged, together with a poetic image which received its defi nitive shape in Kamieńska’s last poem.

Gerusalemme conquistata, ottava, dedication, dedicatory poem on the fly leaf, new reading, Renaissance literatur
Opis:
The goal of this article is to present a new reading of a short dedicatory poem offered by an outstanding poet of the Italian Renaissance, Torquato Tasso, to Stanisław Reszka, the abbot in Jędrzejów, the secretary of Stanisław Hozjusz, and, in this specific case, the ambassador of the Polish king Sigismund III to the Kingdom of Naples. The poet and the ambassador met in 1594 in Naples, where both were recovering from illnesses. Their meeting took place shortly after the publication of Jerusalem conquered, which was a recomposed version of Jerusalem delivered, published in 1593. The poet wished to present his newly created work to men of letters and in common opinion it would have been difficult to find in Naples anyone more estimable than Reszka in those days. Torquato Tasso offered to Stanisław Reszka a copy of his new book with a dedication in the form of a short, eight-verse poem of his own creation. Until now, the ottava was known from the transcription contained in Bibliografia critica by S. Ciampi and in the Italian edition of Tasso’s letters, published by C. Guasti. In Polish literary circles the text of the poem was known thanks to the work of Professor Windakiewicz, who at the close of the 19th century published it in Polish translation and some time later the original text of the poem. The lead to the British Library copy was discovered during the course of research on early printed books owned or written by Stanisław Reszka and preserved in the collection of the Jagiellonian Library. With the generous help of Stephen Parkin, the curator of the Italian collection in the British Library, the original of the autograph was found, and thus it became possible to compare the existing texts with the original. During the comparison it appeared that the transcription given by Ciampi with the help of the Roman bookseller Giovanni Petrucci differs in some places from the British Library original. The author proposes a new reading of several uncertain places based on his own palaeographic experience as well as on the help of relevant reference works from the epoch.

The article presents the strange vicissitudes of one of Cyprian Norwid's poems, namely, Italiam! Italiam! At present it is among the Norwidians that survived the ravages of war and were collected by Rev. Józef Jarzębowski MIC – a Marian. Rev. Jarzębowski (1897-1964) for years collected Polish national mementoes. Today they have become the core of the Museum bearing his name in Licheń Stary near Konin in the sanctuary complex of the Matka Boska Licheńska basilica. In the present sketch a description of all the collection and of its outlay is omitted, albeit it is hard to refrain from praising the standard of the organization of the Museum. The article concentrates on a description of manuscripts connected with Norwid that were collected by Rev. Jarzębowski and since 2007 have been in Licheń; and earlier they were kept in the English seat of Marians in Fawley Court near London. They are: 1) Italiam! Italiam!, the manuscript of the poem written at the turn of 1845 and 1846; 2) a letter to Władysław Zamoyski written at the end of June or beginning of July 1866; 3) a study of a portrait, sent to Leonard Niedźwiedzki; 4) [nine satisfied questions:] 1. Why conscription groundlessly changed into violence… 5) [an appeal to the Russian statesmen:] “Russian Statesmen!...”.
