    The aim of the article is to bring up the picture of Egypt back in the days of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The first part of the article is discussing non-biblical sources, as well as archaeological discoveries. In this way we’ll be able to have a quick glance at the ancienthistory of Egypt – the Old and Middle Kingdom to outline the epoch in which it is likely that Abraham, the biblical patriarch, appeared. The second part of the article will present you an image of the old, patriarch-driven Egypt. We want to look at the details provided by the Book of Genesis.
    Celem artykułu jest przybliżenie sytuacji Egiptu w czasach Abrahama, Izaaka i Jakuba. Pierwsza część artykułu poświęcona jest omówieniu źródeł ozabiblijnych, a także odkryć archeologicznych. W ten sposób krótko spojrzymy na historię Egiptu – Starego i Średniego Państwa, żeby zarysować tło epoki, w której prawdopodobnie w Egipcie pojawił się biblijny Patriarcha – Abraham. Natomiast w drugiej części tego artykułu przybliżymy biblijny obraz Egiptu z czasów patriarchów. Przyjrzeć się chcemy, co na temat Egiptu znajdziemy w Księdze Rodzaju.

    The Pontifical Biblical Commission’s document The Jewish People and their Sacred Scriptures in the Christian Bible, calls attention to a threefold connection between the two parts of the Christian Bible: continuity, discontinuity, and newness. The paper offers an analysis of a passage as an example of this relationship. The Epistle to the Hebrews (11:8–22) gives a particular emphasis to the desires of the patriarchs among other attitudes of the heroes of faith. They were looking for what was promised to them and desired by them: a city with the solid foundations planned and built by God. Now these desires can be fulfilled: the everlasting life with God is offered to all who believe in Jesus Christ.

    This article deals with the process of the formation of the traditionsconcerning the three patriarchs in the book of Genesis. It can already bestated that the traditions concerning Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were initiallyformed independently of each other. Chronological priority shouldbe assigned to the tradition concerning Jacob. It was originally somehowcombined with the tradition concerning Isaac (in Amos), and at the timebefore the exile it constituted the earliest point of reference for seeking theroots and identity of Israel. Only by the end of the exile did the particulartime and situation cause the local Judaean traditions concerning Abrahamto play a greater role also from a theological aspect. Abraham then becamenot only a model of faith and an example of behaviour for the exiles and therepatriates, but also from a the first link in the chain of the three patriarchs.It is possible that at that time some of the motifs of the story of Abrahamwere borrowed from the traditions concerning Isaac (cf. Gen 26).

    The popularity that the Book of Genesis enjoyed among the membersof the Qumran community (28 or more copies) undoubtedly accounted forthe great number of the works inspired by its content that functioned as theparaphrase of the biblical material. Hence, in the scrolls interpreting thenarrative of Gen 12–50 there were found in the Dead Sea Scrolls there arerelatively many references and allusions to the patriarchs Abraham, Isaacand Jacob. Unfortunately, most of the texts – apart from the Genesis Apocryphon(1QapGen) – survived in a very fragmentary state only, thereforetheir interpretation meets serious difficulties and any conclusions should bedrawn with the extreme cautiousness. Nevertheless, it can be acknowledgedthat, in many cases, the authors of the Qumran texts paraphrasing Gen12–50, on the one hand enriched the biblical material with new elementsby extending and supplementing it and, on the other hand, as in the biblicalnarratives of Gen, portray the patriarchs in a standard sequence listing theirnames (i.e. Abraham – Isaac – Jacob) in the context of the covenant and ofthe divine promises, and present them as the models of obedience, loyaltyand faithfulness to God.

    Opis:
    Die Welt ist „die Gesamtheit des Bösen“. Mit diesen Worten charakterisiert Ildephons Schober (1. Abt von Seckau und 3. Erzabt Beurons) die Welt und faltet vor diesem Hintergrund den Sendungsauftrag des Mönchtums aus. Das Verhältnis zur Welt zeigt sich bei Schober in einem dreidimensionalen Koordinatensystem, das in der vertikalen Dimension eine Distanzierung zur Welt fordert, in der Horizontalen einen aktiven Kampf gegen diese verlangt und sich dabei stets als dritte Dimension dem Erbe der Vorgänger verpflichtet weiß. In diesem Verständnis steht auch heute jedes Kloster vor einer enormen Herausforderung, eine ausgewogene Verhältnisbestimmung zu allen drei Dimensionen zu finden. Das Leben von Ildephons Schober kann hier Richtschnur und Auftrag sein, dieses „spirituelle Koordinatensystem“ im richtigen Maß konkret werden zu lassen. Doch wer war Ildephons Schober? Geboren am 23.02.1849 (als Friedrich) in Pfullendorf, trat er mit 21 Jahren in die Benediktinerabtei Beuron ein. Durch den Kulturkampf 1875 zunächst ins Exil nach Volders und Prag geflohen, wurde Schober im Jahr 1887 zum ersten Abt von Seckau postuliert und offenbarte sich dort als brillanter materieller sowie geistlicher Bauherr. 1895 zum Visitator der portugiesischen Klöster sowie 1896 zum Generalsuperior der gerade entstehenden Missionsbenediktiner von St. Ottilien ernannt, wirkte Schober neben seinen Tätigkeiten für Stadt und Land auch äußerst segensreich über das eigene Kloster hinaus. 1908 zum dritten Erzabt Beurons gewählt, wurde ihm bis zu seinem Tod am 28.02.1918 schließlich auch das Erbe der Gründerväter Maurus und Placidus Wolter anvertraut, mit denen er gemeinsam zu den drei Erzvätern der Beuroner Kongregation gerechnet werden kann.
    The world is generally evil. With these words Ildefons Schober (the first Abbot of Seckau and the third Archabbot of the Beuron Abbey) describes the world and against this background he indicates the mission of orders. Schober's attitude to the world can be explained through a three-dimensional system of coordinates. This system in the vertical dimension requires the distance from the world, in the horizontal dimension it demands an active battle against the world, and the third dimension is the feeling of commitment to the ancestors' legacy. As it is, even today every order meets the challenge of balanced self-determination against these three dimensions. The life of Ildefons Schober can act as a beacon and a call for a proper specification of this spiritual system of coordinates. However, who was Ildefons Schober? He was born on 23 Feb. 1849 (as Friedrich) in the town of Pfullendorf, when he was 21 he entered the Benedictine Beuron Abbey. After he was exiled due to Kulturkampf in 1875, he went to Volders and Prague. In 1887 he was appointed to the position of the Abbot of Seckau, where he turned out to be a great administrator, in both practical and spiritual sense. In 1895 he was appointed as a Portuguese orders' inspector, and in 1896 he became a general for the newly-arising Benedictine mission in St. Ottilien, he brought many benefits not only to the town and country, but also to his own order. In 1908 he was elected to be the third Archabbey of Beuron, until his death he occupied the position inherited from the founding fathers – Maurus and Placidus Wolter, and together with them he is among the patriarchs of the Beuron Congregation.
