    This publication analyzes the specificity of the denominational policy of the communist state in the period 1956–1970 through the prism of the pastoral ministry of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński, the Primate of Poland. The main research goal of the article is, therefore, to expose the “post-Stalinist” stage of the history of the Church in the context of the then socio-political situation in Poland, dominated by the rule of Władysław Gomułka’s regime. The exploration of the research topic will be based on the analysis of source texts and studies using the historical method in order to reconstruct historical facts and their reinterpretation using the inductive-deductive method. Interpretation of source materials focuses on showing the role and significance not only for understanding that period of history characterized by the struggle of Cardinal Wyszyński with the atheistic state of “real socialism,” which - as a totalitarian system - used all possible means - both party and administrative - to fight with the Church and the Nation rooted in the thousand-year Christian tradition.

    Opis:
    The times of the Second World War led to a deep degradation of human dignity. In addition, the communist decades in Poland also gave the humans lost their dignity, which was associated with numerous abuses of power and violations of human rights. The Primate Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski, who headed the Church in Poland, proposed in the context of the program called ‘The Great Novena’ the religious and moral renewal of Poles. In that way in the years 1957-1965 it was the main aim to prepare people for the celebration of the millennium of the Baptism of Poland. The essence of this program The Great Novena was to rebuild the sense of dignity of the believers who is not afraid to profess and practice his faith, keeping the moral virtues. In this way, the Primate wanted to bring up a “new man” who had a sense of his own dignity, who respected the traditional national values, caring the family life and he is sensitive to other people and common good. In many points the program the Primate was against of the communist policy of that time which breaks the pillars of social life (such as freedom of speech, the right of association, the freedom of conscience, the values of truth and law) and building the new corresponding to the concept of an atheistic socialist state. Thanks to the wide response of the Polish society and the personal involvement of Primate Stefan Wyszynski, the Great Novena program allowed to be strengthen the Catholic Church in Poland, but also brought up the Solidarity generation.

    The aim of the article is to present in comparative way main events organized in 1966 by the Catholic Church for the „Millennium of the Baptism of Poland” and competitive celebration of the ”Millennium of the Polish State” in the interpretation of „Trybuna Mazowiecka” and „Gość Niedzielny”. All cultural, economic and social aspects are the background of the research.

    Mija ponad trzydzieści lat od śmierci prymasa Polski, kardynała Stefana Wyszyńskiego, znanego również jako Prymas Tysiąclecia. Jego duszpasterska i powszechna działalność dla dobra Narodu odbywała się w czasach wielkich przemian społecznych i politycznych w Polsce, Europie świecie. Był dziedzicem swego poprzednika kardynała Augusta Hlonda w jego otoczeniu pojawiłaś się jeszcze inna wielka osobistość - kardynał Karol Wojtyła. Po wyborze na papieża dał on świadectwo o kardynale Wyszyńskim.
    It is now more than thirty years since the death of the Primate of Poland, Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński, known also as the Primate of the Millennium, on May 28, 1981. His pastoral ministry and widespread activity for the good of the Nation took place at a time of great social and political changes in Poland, Europe and eventually the whole world. Cardinal Wyszyński led the Nation through years of restrictions enforced by the dictatorship of an imposed Communist rule. He was the heir of his predecessor Cardinal August Hlond and there was yet another great personality to emerge by his side - the pastor of Krakow, Cardinal Karol Wojtyła, the now Blessed John Paul II. After being elected pope he gave the highest testimony to Cardinal Wyszyński by saying, „[...] there would not be on St. Peter's See this Pope from Poland, who today full of God's fear, but also full of confidence begins a new pontificate, if it were not for your faith that did not step back in fear of imprisonment and suffering, if it were not for your heroic hope, your complete trust in the Mother of God, if it were not for Jasna Góra and the whole period in the history of the Church in our Motherland connected with your ministry as bishop and primate."

    W historii Polski po II wojnie światowej szczególnie ważny był rok 1966. Kościół katolicki w  przeżywał wtedy wydarzenia, które otrzymały nazwę Milenium Chrztu Polski. Nawiązano w nich do rocznicy przyjęcia chrztu przez księcia Mieszka I. Każda diecezja przeżywała swoje centralne wydarzenie milenijne, w którym uczestniczył prymas Stefan Wyszyński. W diecezji chełmińskiej diecezjalne obchody milenijne odbyły się w dniach 10-11 IX 1966 r. Na miejsce głównych uroczystości wybrano miasta: Toruń oraz Chełmżę. Obchody milenijne diecezji chełmińskiej znalazły swoje echo w różnych źródłach, przede wszystkim w tekstach samego prymasa. W niniejszym artykule odwołano się do zapisów odnoszących się do uroczystości milenijnych, które spotykamy w kronice parafii św. Józefa w Toruniu.
    In der Geschichte Polens nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg war das Jahr 1966 besonders wichtig. Die katholische Kirche erlebte damals Ereignisse, die als „Sacrum Poloniae Millenium“ bezeichnet wurden. Man knüpfte dabei an den Jahrestag der Taufe des Herzogs  Mieszko I. an. Jede Diözese feierte ihr zentrales Tausendjahrereignis, an dem Primas Stefan Wyszyński teilnahm. In der Diözese Kulm/Chełmno fanden die Jahrtausendfeierlichkeiten am 10. und 11. September 1966  statt. Die Städte Toruń und Chełmża wurden als Orte der Hauptfeierlichkeiten ausgewählt. Die Tausendjahrfeierlichkeiten in der Diözese Chełmno fanden ihr Echo in verschiedenen Quellen, hauptsächlich in den Texten des Primas selbst. In diesem Beitrag wurde auf die Aufzeichnungen über die Tausendjahrfeierlichkeiten angeknüpft, die in der Chronik der Pfarrei St. Josef in Thorn zu finden sind. 
    The year 1966 was particularly important in the history of Poland after World War II. The Catholic Church experienced the events that were called the Millennium of the Baptism of Poland. They refer to the anniversary of the baptism of Duke Mieszko I. Each diocese experienced its central millennium event, in which Primate Stefan Wyszyński participated. In the Chełmno diocese, the diocesan millennium celebrations were held on 10 and 11 September 1966. The cities of Toruń and Chełmża were chosen as the place of the main celebrations. The millennium celebrations of the Chełmno diocese found their echo in various sources, mainly in the texts of the Primate himself. In this article, reference is made to the records relating to the millennium celebrations that can be found in the chronicle of the parish of St. Joseph in Toruń.

    Artykuł przybliża rolę kieleckiego „Magazynu” „Słowa Ludu” w popularyzacji dziejów narodowych, w ostatnim roku obchodów Tysiąclecia Państwa Polskiego (1966 r.). Dzielący los całej ówczesnej prasy polskiej „Magazyn” miał wówczas wykazać szczególną ofensywność w polemice z przeżywającym Millennium Chrztu Polski Kościołem katolickim, promując świecką wizję historii narodowej. Szczegółowa analiza wszystkich numerów „Magazynu” z 1966 r. wykazała jednak, że poza ideologiczno-propagandowym oddziaływaniem tygodnik ten spełnił również pozytywną rolę. Aktywnie włączył się w promocję historii regionalnej, pogłębiając tym samym świadomość historyczną mieszkańców Kielc i okolic
    This article examines the role of the ‘Magazyn’ supplement of the Kielce daily Słowo Ludu in popularizing Polish history in the last year of the celebrations of Poland’s Millennium (1966). Like the rest of the Polish press the Magazyn was expected to take part in the ideological offensive against the Catholic Church’s idea of the Millennium. Although the Magazyn did adopt the outlines of the secular narrative sanctioned by the authorities, it also managed to bring in a lot of material dealing with the history of the region. In this way it did a good job of raising the historical awareness of the residents of Kielce and its environs
