The article presents the outcome of an analysis of archival volumes of the periodical „Rocznik Literacki” (1932-1984), publishing annually general overviews of Polish literature. The text aims at tracing back the perception of the reportage and the prevailing convinctions on its definition and borders. Essays written by prominent Polish critics and scholars show the evolution of the genre and its theory. A recurring issue is the problem of literary techniques possible (or, in some opinions, forbidden) in the reportage.

Opis:
The present paper considers the antonymous and synonymous relations that can be observed in the literary texts of A. Tchekhov with regard to the paradigm with the dominant of radostʼ – gorie. In the paradigm in question the first lexeme appears in antonymous relations with the other 11 lexical units: skorbʼ, grustʼ, pechalʼ, muka, stradanije, bolʼ, skuka, toska, dosada, otchajanie, uzhas. The units quoted above are synonymously connected, even though they refer to different synonymous groups. Such determined the synonymy demands a description of differences between the opposites. The differences can be more emphasized as a result of seme analysis that aims at relating semes to particular units in the paradigm. The antonymous and synonymous connections presented in the paper can be recognized as a specific kind of the writer’s speech since to a considerable degree they shape the Tchekhov’s style.

The purpose of the article is to describe the model and method of management of the Literary Institute and “Kultura” by Jerzy Giedroyc using the categories of circles, networks, and relations, verifying in this way the editor’s legend. The analysis covered the entire period of the Institute’s operation (1946-2000), comparing the internal periodization of the activity with the changes of the authors in the “Kultura” circle, which made it possible to distinguish between the friendly and home circle and three authors’ circles. The diaries, biographies, and letters provided the grounds to emphasize the significance of the network for building the position of “Kultura” as an opinion-forming magazine and a place of help for emigrant writers. Managing “Kultura” is presented, which is focused on creating relations and being objective. Synthesis, content analysis, and comparative methods have been used. This problem has not been discussed so far in the extensive literature on the subject.

Four Polish printed matters from the end of 16th century were highlighted in the article. Three of them, The Life and Death of a Princess from Parma (1581); Republic (1594); Joseph the Righteous (1596) refer to Lives of the Saints by Piotr Skarga. This is proof that the book was highly appreciated by the author’s contemporaries as a counter-reformation speculum, outstanding reading for women, and a point of reference for clergymen who wanted to prepare their own speeches. The forth printed matter is another sign of The Lives of Saints popularity (The Benedictine Rule circa 1597). What we find there is a slightly altered version of St. Benedict’s life, which does not mention the name of Piotr Skarga.

In my article I reconstructed the picture of literary and theatrical Cracow in the years 1918– 1939, represented in the memorials Młodości mej stolica. Pamiętnik krakowianina z okresu między wojnami (the extended edition, 1984), written by Tadeusz Kudliński. The author was an active participant of the cultural life of this city and a bystander of the great social and historical changes after Poland regained its independence in 1918. I tried to confront his subjective view of the important artistic events and processes in the interwar period with the objectivism of historical studies. Kudliński presented a complete and detailed image but, naturally, he paid more attention only to some facts, disregarding or briefly mentioning others. I wanted to understand the motivation behind thematic selection of the material. In the first part of this article, I analysed Kudliński’s „gallery of the portraits” of Cracovian writers and theatre people, paying special attention to the applied genre convention and description method. In the second part, I presented some individual elements of the literary Cracow panorama: professional organisation and institutionalisation of the literary life, the functioning of the publishing market, the development of local newspapers and periodicals, the financial situation of the writers and the meaning of tradition and avant-garde. In the third part, I reconstructed the image of the theatrical Cracow and the author’s views on the philosophy and aesthetics of the theatre. My main objective was to show the great documentary value of Kudliński’s memories – due to their factographic credibility and variety of content Młodości mej stolica can be a valuable source of knowledge about the history of Cracow.

The text is an attempt to indicate innovatory terminological solutions and their critical reception of the so-called cultural theory of literature, being formed in the last decade, on the basis of the last proposal included in Poetyka doświadczenia (“Poetics of Experience”) by Ryszard Nycz. The author of the essay concentrates on the fundamental humanistic notions, for example experiencing, happening, paradigmaticality, interdisciplinarity in the studies into literature or intertextuality, which, from this viewpoint, are subject to redefinition and a kind of conceptualization. A separate place in these considerations is occupied by the comparison of the stance of the author of Sylwy współczesne with the recent writings of Michał Paweł Markowski and the argument with the analysis of specific case studies included in the ending of Poetics of Experience.

Artykuł omawia nowe koncepcje teoretycznoliterackie, które wskazują na stopniową restytucję znaczenia poetyki w refleksji literaturoznawczej. Zdaniem autora, poetyka powraca jako rodzaj niezbędnej wiedzy sytuacyjnej, która pozwala wzbogacić proces lektury, a zarazem pojawia się w trakcie czytania, aby uniknąć niewczesności wiedzy charakteryzującej w znaczącym stopniu dawniejszą poetologię.
The article discusses new concepts of literary theory that indicate a gradual restoration of poetics to a place of importance in literary studies thought. In the author’s opinion, poetics is making a comeback as a form of essential situational knowledge that enables the enrichment of the reading process, and also arises during the act of reading, avoiding the untimeliness and abstraction associated with poetics’ former incarnation.

This article is composed of three main parts: the first part briefly presents Prof. Jaworski’s professional and creative accomplishments, the second part provides a description of the most important research questions addressed by Prof. Jaworski in his scholarly work, while the last section of the article is devoted to personal recollections by the present writer, highlighting the profiles and roles of Professor Jaworski as a lecturer, scholar, intellectual, editor, science organiser and discourse partner. Stanisław Jaworski was a prominent expert in the Kraków Avantgarde group and the subsequent history of this avant-garde movement in Polish poetry in Poland as well as on changes and literary recurrences in modern Polish and European literature. His literary research techniques include a comparative perspective as an important element, whereas interpretations of poems still play a substantial part. Prof. Jaworski has written a groundbreaking work Piszę, więc jestem? [I write therefore I am?] introducing new ideas and methods in genetic criticism, the approach to the study of literature Prof.Jaworski adopted and developed. The present article identifies common ideas and ways of thinking in research and poetical creative work.

Творчасць беларускіх пісьменнікаў, грамадзян Польшчы, у якой знайшлі адлюстраванне тэмы беларускай і польскай рэчаіснасці, культуры і гісторыі, выклікае складанасці ў аналізе для польскіх і беларускіх літаратуразнаўцаў. У артыкуле звяртаецца ўвага на тое, што даследчыцкая перспектыва адыгрывае важкую ролю пры класіфікацыі творчасці «белавежцаў». Падкрэсліваецца, што натуральнымі з’яўляюцца разыходжанні паміж польскім і беларускім разуменнем характару творчасці членаў БЛА «Белавежа», аднак наробак аўтахтонаў Беласточчыны не можа быць вычарпаны супастаўленнем толькі з адной нацыянальнай літаратурай і ўпісвацца ў літаратуру Крэсаў ці рэгіянальную. Гетэрагенічны і памежны «белавежскі» плён узрастае з беларускіх каранёў і ў значнай ступені належыць беларускаму кантэксту і спадчыне, з’яўляецца заканамерным этапам развіцця беларускай літаратуры ўвогуле.
This article analyses the phenomenon of the Belarusian Literature Association “Belavezha” in Poland. The organisation was founded in 1958 on the wave of Belarusian revival processes in the Białystok region. The works of Belarusian writers, Polish citizens, in which the themes of Belarusian and Polish reality, culture and history are reflected, make analyses difficult for Polish and Belarusian literary scholars. The research perspective is an important factor in the classification of the works of “Białowieża people”, which is included in the Kresy (regional or borderland) literature. The article notes that the research perspective is an important factor in the classification of the work of “Białowieża people”.It is emphasized that discrepancies between the Polish and Belarusian understanding of the nature of the work of BLA “Belavezha” members are natural, although the works of the inhabitants of the Białystok region cannot be depleted by comparison with only one national literature and inscribed in the literature of the Borderlands or the region. Heterogeneous and borderland “Białowieża” literature originates from Belarusian roots and to a large extent belongs to the Belarusian context and heritage, and is generally a natural phase in the development of Belarusian literature.

The purpose of this study is to find out how people of the literary milieu reacted to the famous historical moment in Poland – October 1956, also known as the Polish October. After Stalin’s death in 1953 and the famous Nikita Khrushchev’s speech in 1956 (On the Personality Cult and its Consequences), the process of de-Stalinization comprised the territory of the Soviet Union and the entire Eastern Block, including the People’s Republic of Poland (PRL). After Władysław Gomułka’s election to the office of the First Secretary of the Polish United Workers’ Party (PZPR) during the 8th Plenum meeting, numerous Polish writers hoped that the new government would give them back the freedom of creativity, which they had lost after the Second World War. Initially Gomułka declared “the new cultural policy” – more liberal attitude towards both the literary milieu’s views and the perception of reality. Yet, it soon turned out that Gomułka’s oral declaration would not be fulfilled. The study proves that the time when the First Secretary was in power, brought a lot of disappointments in the literary milieu, in particular among members of the Union of Polish Writers (ZLP).

Opis:
Most Królowej Jadwigi, the three-volume novel by Bydgoszcz novelist Jerzy Sulima-Kaminski, is one of the few literary records of the history of the city on the Brda river. The narrator of the novel lists almost all the churches existed in Bydgoszcz before the Second World War. The majority are Catholic and Protestant churches, and next to them there is a synagogue, pulled down by the Nazis, and one a tiny orthodox church (also non-existent today). The author of the novel focuses on the towers of the churches. A special place in the literary and linguistic picture of the churches in Bydgoszcz is Jesuit church in the Old Market (destroyed by the Nazis). Sulima-Kaminski uses the noun kościół and names a narrower meaning, as zbór, kircha, bóżnica, synagoga and cerkiewka. In the picture of Bydgoszcz churches people connected with some of these temples play a major role: the priest Rolski, the canon Stepczyński, the priest Godek, Father Kaluschke, the pop Smoktunowicz. But the organist Jankowski (who became a legend of the church of Sacred Heart of Jesus at the Piastowski Place) is the most colorful character. The linguistic and literary picture of churches in Bydgoszcz is characterized by strong positive emotions. The churches are the components of the identity of the author’s hometown and a small part of his childhood homeland.

The Jewish war by Henryk Grynberg is a record of emotions and experiences related to the Holocaust. By creating their image, the author combines individual, childhood mem-ories with the memory of his mother and the survivors from his immediate environment. Linguistic expression plays a fundamental role in their presentation.In Grynberg’s work understatements marked with ellipsis are very important, which testifies to its multilayeredness. The goal of my article was to show the motivation of human behavior in specific situations and psychological defense mechanisms.

The main aim of the article is to present selected works from the corpus of the oldest Polish texts showing the figure of St. Anne. In the article the characteristics in the lyrical genres (such as little hours, song of Saint Anne) are compared with those present in the prose (such as apocrypha, hagiographic works). The booklets for the members of the Society St. Anne, which are collections of different types of song, are also mentioned. In the article there is the answer if and in what way the genealogical character of the work describing the Saint Grandmother of Christ and the time in which the work was created influenced the content and ideologies present in the selected texts. The majority of the argument is based on the chronology of the creation of works.

The article is dedicated to the literary criticism of Filozofia Leśmiana Eksperyment krytyczny (1946), a literary sketch by Artur Sandauer. It is also a strong distractor from noticing the “cracks” in the text, which are labelled as problem-based places in teaching interpretation. By using the appropriate aspects of theories of interpretation, (de)construction, phenomenology, and over-interpretation) we observe and analyse such places in text. The goal of this paper is to create the frame for the new (problem-based) way to read fairy tales, to separate the levels of interpretation, and to illuminate the systematic development path of the young reader (in literature teaching).
