Issues related to women’s history and feminism occupied a central place in Maria Bogucka’s research. It is not without significance that her work in this area corresponds to the dynamic development of research on the history of women in Western Europe and the United States. Women, often overlooked in historical research, represented important heroines not only as queens or saints, but also as characters whose group portrait was essentially worth recreating. Maria Bogucka looked to address women’s (and feminist) issues in biographies, monographs, articles and essays. To this end, she introduced the findings of foreign researchers into Polish historiography, and emphasised the specificity of the situation of women in Poland over the centuries.

W artykule podjęto rozważania dotyczące wybranych metafor obecnych w feministycznych projektach historycznoliterackich. Autorka szkicu sformułowała pytania o znaczenia i – krytyczne, opisowe – możliwości związane z metaforyką fali, lądu i marginesu. W przypadku opisu literatury kobiet pytania te wyznaczają nie tylko podstawowe dylematy wynikające z prób konceptualizacji literatury kobiet w szerszych, syntetyzujących perspektywach, ale także pozwalają na wskazanie najważniejszych sposobów ujęć kobiecego pisarstwa w jego relacjach ze społeczno-politycznymi przemianami, pisarskimi i badawczymi biografiami, kanonem.
This article takes up a consideration of certain metaphors present in feminist projects of literary history. The essay’s author formulates questions about the meanings and critical and descriptive potential of the metaphors of the wave, the land, and the margin. In the case of describing women’s literature, these questions  highlight not only the fundamental dilemmas resulting from attempts to conceptualize women’s literature in broader comparative perspectives, but they also allow us to identify the most important means for grasping women’s writing in terms of its relation with sociopolitical  transformations, academic and literary biographies, and the canon.

This article was written on occasion of the centenary of political rights of women in Poland. On 28 November 1918 Józef Piłsudski, First Marshall of Poland, signed a decree on the electoral system to the Polish Parliament (Sejm Ustawodawczy), which conferred equal political rights to men and women. Soon after first women became Members of Parliament. Poland became one of the first European countries which equated political rights of all citizens. In the second part of the article it is shown, in the form of a calendar with illustrations, how the women’s path to the legal profession has evolved since the second half of the 19th century (especially to the Bar) in the United States and especially in Poland.

Opis:
The article concentrate on several aspects related to the person of Saint Thecla. One of the most important issues is the presentation of Thecla as historical figure and her role – a female Saint equal to the apostles – in the history of Christianity. Another aspect of the considerations is the searching for this saint woman iconography based on the analysis of the oldest surviving examples in comparison with the content of the hagiographic “Acts of Paul and Thecla”, which were written in the 2nd and 3rd centuries after Christ. The considerations were used in the development of an iconographic pattern, which contains historiographic premises of presenting the first martyr Saint Thecla on the Deacon’s Doors into the orthodox church of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker in Topilec village.

This article offers a survey of the careers of 54 Polish female historians who received the habilitacja degree in 1945–1989 at seven Polish universities – four of those were founded soon after the Second World War (University of Łódź, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, University of Wrocław, Maria Skłodowska‑Curie University in Lublin), while three had been established earlier (University of Warsaw, Jagiellonian University in Kraków and the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań). Analysis of personal files and various biographical materials has led the author to a number of conclusions about female historians’ academic careers. The careers reflected the discipline’s development, both in terms of the expansion of its field of inquiry, as well its methodological diversity and the conditions in which it operated. Career paths followed by women were not much different from those followed by men. Neither advancement requirements, nor employment policy at the schools of higher learning were discriminatory towards any of the sexes. However, as far as the female career advancement is concerned, there were some differences between the old and new universities: it was easier for women to obtain managerial positions at the latter.

The aim of this paper is to point to the aspect of subjective sense of personal causative power amongstfemale professors who held their seats during the People’s Republic of Poland. In her research, the authorseeks an answer to the question whether the female deputies distinguished by their double role had a senseof subjective causative power, analysing their personal reflection expressed on the subject in availablesources. The research in a broader aspect contributes to the question whether women, especially thosewith a high professional and social status, playing political roles in the Real Socialist system had a real impacton changing the existing reality and whether their activity translated into specific normative decisions orsolutions of a permanent nature.

Artykuł omawia powstanie i działalność Żeńskiego Oddziału Kuriersko-Wywiadowczego, na czele którego stała Aleksandra Szczerbińska. Po wycofaniu się z Kielc Oddziałów I Brygady 30 października 1914 r. Aleksandra Szczerbińska „Ola” objęła komendę nad oddziałem kobiecym z rąk Kazimierza Sawickiego. Dowodzony przez nią Żeński Oddział Wywiadowczy jako część Oddziału Wywiadowczego podlegał najpierw I Pułkowi Piechoty Legionów, a następnie I Brygadzie. W oddziale tym służyło 46 kobiet. Były to członkinie Związku i Drużyn Strzeleckich, które miały kilkuletnie wykształcenie wojskowe. W oddziale kuriersko-wywiadowczym służbę pełniły również kobiety należące do politycznych organizacji niepodległościowych. Postawa, odwaga, determinacja wywiadowczyń z Żeńskiego Oddziału Kuriersko-Wywiadowczego wielokrotnie znajdowała uznanie w opiniach Józefa Piłsudskiego.
The paper presents the origins and activities of Women’s Courier and Intelligence Unit commanded by Aleksandra Szczerbińska. She became a Head of this Unit after it was retreated from Kielce together with troops of the 1st Brigade on 30th October 1914. This Unit was earlier commanded by Kazimierz Sawicki and was firstly a part of Intelligence Unit in the 1st Infantry Regiment, then in the 1st Brigade. The Unit consisted of 46 women, previous members of Shooting Troops, having few years of military experience. Some of them were also active members of independent political organizations. Bravery and skills of the members of Women’s Courier and Intelligence Unit were strongly appreciated by Józef Piłsudski.

The article discusses the latest trends in research on women’s history in Poland. Attention is drawn to the increasing number of biographies, and an attempt is made to answer the question of whether and in what direction this type of writing is changing our perception of women’s roles in Polish history. The article discusses the autobiographical literature written by women, whose publications reflect a growing interest in individual history and are a response to the demand to give a voice to previously unheard groups. It raises questions about the role of memoirs in describing past societies and gender order. The role of oral history methods in gaining insight into the past of women and society is also discussed.

Opis:
The main idea of the paper is the rarely investigated holistic issue of the literary, historical and cultural influence of ancient Greece on the nations of Central and Eastern Europe from the beginnings of their statehood up until modern times. Special attention is paid to three crucial centuries: 15th, 16th and 17th when Greek was taught in Central Europe; works of this era created in this language by the Germans, the Polish and the Silesians have survived up to the present day as old prints in special collections of many libraries. However, so far not much attention has been paid to them, while some of these works, written especially in Silesia, constitute interesting examples of occasional literature, different from the more common literature found in that region of Europe, New-Latin literature. Special emphasis shall be put particularly on works by Ursinus Velius, who also willingly brought up women’s issues, using Greek language to create and pass on to posterity the ideal of Silesian woman having Venus’s beauty, the goddess of persuasion Peitho – Πείθω’s pro-nunciation, Calliope’s maturity, Themis’s mind and Minerva’s palms. The Silesian humanists published their works in Latin more often than in Polish and German, and it should be taken into consideration that the fluency and literary knowledge of Greek at that time in Europe was, using Polish historian Henryk Barycz's comparison, as prestigious as the study of nuclear physics was in the middle of the 20th century. The presented paper also addresses the historical contacts and re-lations between Greece and the aforementioned part of Europe in modern times, especially after World War II, when a number of Greek people settled in Poland, including Silesia.

Społeczno-Obywatelska Liga Kobiet działała w Polsce Ludowej w latach 1945–1949. Jej pierwszy oficjalny organ prasowy, którym była „Praca Kobiet”, zaczął ukazywać się dopiero w 1946 r. Periodyk wydawał warszawski Zarząd Wojewódzki stowarzyszenia. Ogólnopolskie pismo „Nasza Praca”, będące organem Zarządu Głównego, trafiło do czytelniczek dopiero z początkiem 1947 r. Na jego łamach kontynuowano publikację informacji o działalności zagranicznych ruchów kobiecych i zrzeszających je organizacjach międzynarodowych takich, jak Światowa Demokratyczna Federacja Kobiet. Wartość poznawcza tych publikacji była zróżnicowana. Wpływ na to miał język przekazu dziennikarskiego (nowomowa) i propagandowy (pozamerytoryczny) dobór odnotowywanych i pomijanych faktów. Ich analiza pozwoliła jednak odkryć mechanizmy funkcjonowania (współdziałania) lewicowych ruchów kobiecych na forum międzynarodowym w drugiej połowie lat 40. XX w.
The Social and Civic Women’s League has acted in Communist Poland in the years 1945–1949. Its first official press release, which was “Praca Kobiet”, started its publication only in 1946. Periodical publishing had been issued by Warsaw Regional Board of the association. The national magazine “Nasza Praca”, an organ of the General Board, has been received by the readers just before commencement of 1947. In texts published on its sites it was continued a publication of the information concerning the activity of foreign women’s movements and their international organizations such as the World Democrat Women Federation. Cognitive values of such publications varied a lot. This was significantly influenced by the journalist language used to transfer (newspeak) and propaganda (non-substantive) choice of recorded and disregarded facts. Their analysis however helped to discover mechanisms of functioning (interaction) of the leftist women’s movements on the international front in the second half of the 1940s.
