The aim of the article is to examine the figure of an artist in the novel Charlotte by David Foenkinos. With his text, he desires to pay homage to Charlotte Salomon, a Jewish painter murdered at age twenty-six in Auschwitz. The Salomon’s biography and works became famous thanks to the novel by Foenkinos. The great merit of his book is to make the painter recognizable to a wide public. The interpretation of the text in which central figure is a painter should include a question about the generic status of the novel, thus the reflection about the Künstlerroman, and about the status of the image in the text, the narrative processes used to make the text more plastic, the ekphrasis, etc. The problem seems interesting because Charlotte does not correspond with the traditional definition of the Künstlerroman. The narrator refers the reader to the extradégétique reality in order to make a connection between the reader and Charlotte’s painting; therefore, he focuses his story on the conception of the image and not on the image itself.

The present paper will offer a postmodern reading of interdisciplinarity by investigating the multifaceted writing and the coexistence between various disciplines in Eugene O’Neill’s Mourning Becomes Electra (1931). Versatility in the O’Neillian text is elaborated through the intersection between psychoanalysis and Greek mythology. In this respect, the Oedipus complex will be analyzed from a Lacanian perspective. The rationale behind choosing Lacan is his efforts “[to transform] psychoanalysis from a modernist to a postmodernist discipline” (Horrocks 2001: 19). The paper will also examine the Electra complex from Jung’s perspective. What is specific about Jung is that “he was strictly a phenomenologist, to that extent a postmodern before postmodernism” (David 2003: 24). The inner psyche of the characters will be further interpreted through a postmodern reading of masks. Like the civil war which divided the States into a Northern and a Southern part, the inner self of some Mannons is composed of masks that are the outcome of the inner split between repression and free will. On the other hand, the postmodern reading of the play will focus on Barthes’ announcement of The Death of The Author. Interdisciplinarity will ultimately be mapped out with relying on Linda Hutcheon’s postmodern reading of intertexuality.

In the article I am taking reflection about the therapeutic value of art. I propose to juxtapose Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale The Girl with matches and Eric Emmanuel Schmitt’s book Oskar and Mrs. Rose with artistic expression and therapy through drama. I am paying attention to the subject raised by writers of the death being comforting and freeing. Understanding of this message, thanks to the participation in therapeutic classes, helps to discover the meaning of the life and at the same time allows you to overcome the fear of death and become familiar with its inevitability.

Hayden White did not directly examine the issue of the independence of history as a discipline of knowledge in his theoretical reflection. He did not ask about the subject of historical studies, the specificity of the methods used in it, the difference between history and other fields, or the economic and social conditions of historical discourse. In this article, I revise White’s writing and reconfigure the extant research using the concept of autonomy. White — primarily in his works from the 1970s and 1980s — devoted much attention to exposing and describing cultural compulsions resulting in historical practices and violating their autonomy. These actions also brought unexpected results. At first, the use of structuralism in these practices, and then poststructuralist concepts of “the death of the author” and textualism, suggested claims that freed historiography from its links with an author’s biography and world-view, and with the social context in which a given work is produced. Using Foucault’s descrip-tion of the order of discourse, in turn, brought the image of a strict rigor of historical discipline, which, however, is not equal to the strong autonomy of history. A stronger delimitation of the field of history appears in his — already in the twenty‑first century — offer to use Michael Oakeshott’s division into the practical past and the historical past. Whilst censuring academic historical writing as sterile and rejected by readers because it fails to answer contemporary existential, social and political questions, White, most likely unintentionally, described the independence of historians’ actions from the demands of the societies to which they belong. According to commentators, his remarks can be a productive inspiration for reflection upon the distinctiveness of the discipline of history.

Opis:
The subject of death and reflections on the subsequent fate of the human soul have repeatedly inspired the creation of literary, musical and artistic works over the centuries. This motif was also used in Polish musical folklore. An example can be the songs: the medieval song Dusza z ciała wyleciała (Eng. Soul Flew Out of the Body) and a song from the second half of the 20th century Ach, mój smutku (Eng. Ah, my sorrow). One of the outstanding Polish composers of classical contemporary music who took up the subject of the fate of the soul after human death was Wojciech Kilar. Lament was written in 2003, in the last phase of the composer’s work, widely known as the national-religious trend. The Lament was composed for a mixed a cappella choir. The composition is distinguished by simplicity, the author abandoned the sonoristic sounds characteristic of his work in favor of modest arrangements referring, among others, to the tradition of Gregorian chant.
Tematyka śmierci i rozważania dotyczące późniejszego losu duszy człowieka na przestrzeni wieków wielokrotnie stawały się inspiracją do stworzenia utworów literackich, muzycznych oraz plastycznych. W polskim folklorze muzycznym motyw ten był również wykorzystywany. Przykładem mogą być pieśni: średniowieczna Dusza z ciała wyleciała oraz pochodząca z 2. połowy XX wieku Ach, mój smutku. Jednym z wybitnych polskich kompozytorów klasycznej muzyki współczesnej, którzy podjęli temat losu duszy po śmierci człowieka, był Wojciech Kilar. Lament powstał w 2003 roku, w ostatniej fazie twórczości kompozytora nazywanej nurtem narodowo-religijnym. Lament został skomponowany na mieszany chór a cappella. Kompozycję wyróżnia prostota, autor zrezygnował z charakterystycznych dla swojej twórczości sonorystycznych brzmień na rzecz skromnych układów nawiązujących między innymi do tradycji chorału gregoriańskiego.

Author of the article starts with a question about the meaning of the activity that is writing. He looks for answers in ‘The Order of Things: An Archaeology of the Human Sciences’ by Michel Foucault, which – according to the author – emerged from the experience of the laughter, triggered by the book of Jorge Louis Borges, in which he included an excerpt from the Chinese encyclopedia describing the classification of animals. The author is analyzing this phenomenon in detail, inter alia in the context of what about the laughter thought Georges Bataille, who greatly inspired Foucault. However, the author does not end his deliberation with an answer to the question: ‘Why Foucault wrote ‘The Order of Things’’, where the philosopher announced ‘the death of man’ for the first time. He is trying to go deeper and answer the question: ‘why the man had to die?’

Opis:
The main subject of the article is to show the changes that have taken place in the media, including the newspapers. The starting point is the title of the book by B. Poulet „La Fin des Journaux et l’avenir de l’information” („The End of Newspapers and the Future of Information”, 2011). This article presents the changes that have occurred in the printed newspaper, with special attention to the description of the components of the press release. The paper also focuses on the significance of the image and its interaction with the text and the issues associated with the return of iconic and visual culture. The traditional newspaper is compared with an electronic, on-line version of the newspaper in the context of presenting the information and its geneology. Furthermore, the paper shows the transformation of the information into infotainment.

An analysis have been performed of the autopsies performed in the years 2008–2009 at the Forensic Medicine Department, Medical University, Wrocław, Poland to choose the death cases of people aged 60 years and above. Using the results of the review of the literature and the autopsy reports 4 main groups of problems influencing the forensic practitioners work, pertaining the old people, have been identified: loneliness and isolation resulting in quite a big delay in finding out corpses and advanced post-mortem changes at the time of autopsy, old people susceptibility to serious injuries resulting from even minor trauma, coexisting advanced chronic diseases complicating the decision whether or not they constituted a real cause of death and susceptibility of the old people corpses to post-mortem changes. It has been successfully connected to the forensic autopsy results. The abovementioned issues constitute the specific problems in forensic opinion giving in cases of the old people deaths. The high incidence of various level alcohol intoxication in old people who died because of various causes suggests that the problem of alcohol abuse in this age group may be of quite a big importance.
Przeanalizowano materiał sekcyjny Zakładu Medycyny Sądowej we Wrocławiu z lat 2008–2009 i wybrano przypadki zgonów osób powyżej 60. r.ż. W oparciu o wyniki badań sekcyjnych i literaturę wyodrębniono 4 główne grupy mających wpływ na pracę medyka sądowego problemów dotyczących osób starszych, takie jak: samotność i izolacja powodujące opóźnienia w ujawnieniu zwłok i znaczny stopień zaawansowania ich zmian pośmiertnych w chwili badania, podatność na poważne obrażenia w wyniku urazów o stosunkowo niewielkiej sile, zaawansowanie współistniejących chorób przewlekłych utrudniające ustalenie ich rzeczywistego wpływu na zgon oraz łatwość występowania na zwłokach osób starszych zmian pośmiertnych. Na podstawie analizy wyników sekcji zwłok wykazano, iż problemy te znajdują swe odbicie w wynikach sądowo-lekarskich sekcji zwłok. Wymienione zagadnienia stanowią o specyficznych trudnościach w opiniowaniu sądowo-lekarskim dotyczącym zgonów osób w podeszłym wieku. Znaczna częstość stwierdzanego u zmarłych z różnych przyczyn osób starszych różnego stopnia zatrucia alkoholem może wskazywać na istotność problemu nadużywania alkoholu w tej grupie wiekowej.

Kara śmierci wzbudzała i wzbudza wiele emocji. Jakkolwiek istnieje od niepamiętnych czasów, przez kolejne stulecia podejście do niej zmieniało się, podobnie jak stosunek do karania w ogóle. Wydaje się, że przestano ją uważać, przynajmniej w europejskim kręgu kulturowym, za „naturalny” element porządku świata. Powinnością przeciwstawienia się zbrodni zabójstwa obciążony jest każdy człowiek. Każdy zaś z osobna odpowiedzialny jest za swoje własne czyny, dzięki głosowi sumienia poznaje prawo naturalne, nakazujące uszanowanie cudzego życia. Obowiązek ten spoczywa równocześnie na ustanowionej przez Boga władzy państwowej. To do niej należy zagwarantowanie spokoju życia społecznego i ochrona godności ludzkiej. W świetle tradycji Kościoła katolickiego kara śmierci jest dopuszczalna jako ostateczny środek obrony społeczeństwa przed przestępcami. Potwierdza to nauka Ojców Kościoła, wypowiedzi papieży, listy episkopatów katolickich oraz rozważania teologów. Podobnie problem ten ujmuje Katechizm Kościoła Katolickiego, którego orzeczenie zostało zrewidowane po opublikowaniu Evangelium vitae.
The death penalty has always been an emotionally charged issue. It has been employed since time immemorial, but attitudes towards it have changed over time, just like attitudes towards punishment in general. It seems that now the death penalty is no longer considered a “natural” element of the world order, at least in European culture. Everyone has the duty to oppose the crime of homicide. Every individual separately is responsible for his own actions and following the voice of his conscience, recognises the natural law mandating respect for another’s life. Similarly, the state authorities deriving their power from God, are entrusted with ensuring social order and protecting human dignity. The Catholic Church allows the use of the death penalty only as a last resort to protect society from aggressors. This position is confirmed by the teaching of the Church Fathers, comments made by Popes, letters of the Catholic episcopates as well as theologians’ reflections. It is also supported by the Catechism of the Catholic Church revised after the publication of Evangelium Vitae.

In 2018 prof. Wiesław Wydra found out an old printed version of the famous old-Polish work De Morte. Prologus. This epoch-making finding creates new opportunities for research on this text. The printed version contains the conclusion of the dialogue, which was omitted in the only witness known so far. Nevertheless, the printed version is rather a reworking, than a faithful reproduction of a pre-existing text. It corresponds neither to the transcription of the lost scroll nor to the old-Russian translation, which is in turn evidence of an active attitude of the translator towards the original text, so that it does not testify completely to the Polish original. The author compares the three extant versions of the work (the two old-Polish versions and the old-Russian one), and focuses on what this comparison can tell about the work with the text accomplished by the editor of the printed version, as well as the attempts at reconstructing the original medieval version.

The paper attempts to propose a Christian reaction to the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche. The first part is a concise reconstruction of his anthropological project, undertaken on the basis of his later works. The second part presents the main reasons for the attractiveness of his work and the context in which it was written. In the last part, partly with some reference to Max Scheler’s Ressentiment and Christian Morality, the author sketches the framework of the Christian answer. (1) Placing of the idea of the fullness of new life in the center of Christian soteriology, (2) recognizing the merciful love of God to human beings as an expression of the divine perfection and power and (3) looking for new convincing descriptions of the ways to the divine transcendence against a background of the experiences of self-transcendence (eros and thanatos) are the main elements of the adequate Christian reaction to the proposal of the German philosopher.

The article deals with a matter of the redress for damage awarded due to the death of a close person. This paper provides a general overview of “the deceased person” term and entitled person to make a claim - “the close person” term. The text aims to briefly explain the available legal resources as well as the amounts typically awarded in such cases. Under the Polish Civil Code, the article 446 § 4 is the basis of a claim. The author describes conditions for an application and functions of the provision. The most important is that the bereavement dam- ages depend on size and intensity of the negative impact in the entitled person’s mental and emotional sphere. Compensation seeks to alleviate the pain after the loss of a close relative. The author also emphasizes the need for amendment in the Polish legislation and presents de lege ferenda postulates.

The theory which Jacob Masen presented in the work Ars nova argutiarum was well considered by him. The author wanted to present a diversity of possibilities which enabled building the argutia; he also attempted to arrange their multiplicity in clearly structured categories. He was interested in making reference to those acumens which occur in the grounds of the depicted reality as well as those which are based on the lingual devices. The whole of the lecture is strongly rooted in the philosophical analyses belonging to the old dialectics; it is especially based on Categories by Aristotle. Without a doubt, the lecture places itself in that scope of poetics which refers to a sophisticated poetry. The author leads the reader step by step, disclosing to him more new possibilities of creating the argutia. It is worth noticing that he generally makes references to the same contents. Within the scope of the presented epigrammatic cycle, especially to the Judas’ suicidal death. Skilfully infl uencing the fl ow of thoughts, controlling the occurring associations, using the game of words allowed the author to develop a rich epigrammatic collection. The works do not always present a proper level of artistry. They happen to be too simple in what they communicate. However, there are also such works which cause the intended surprise and joy of disclosing a thought conveyed in a veiled form by the poet. It is diffi - cult to determine whether Masen’s belief that actually every argutia can be assigned to the sources specifi ed by him is true. However, without a doubt he left an important tool for carrying literary research on this scope of Baroque literary works which used acumens. The question whether the theory presented by the Jesuit is an introduction into the poetic art or already a lecture on the sophisticated art still remains unanswered and a problem to solve. The epigrams concerned are not subjected to graphical forms. Apart from the fourth source, they generally lack solutions typical for the sophisticated poetry such as, for example, anagram. The presented epigrams do however contain something typical for the very essence of the sophisticated poetry. As a matter of fact, a juxtaposition of its vari ous forms shows that in each of them a line is assigned to a certain scheme, adopted by the poet. Generally, it is a graphical scheme, sometimes a scheme based on a game of letters or metrical devices. In case of Masen, it is also a certain scheme. However, this scheme is not related to the external layer of the work but it lies at its foundation. The point is that it concerns internal assumptions, the course of thinking and logical associations.

In the silent Weimar films of Fritz Lang, the heroines have sudden encounters with Death, conceived both as an allegorical figure and as an unexpected violent end of the life of their fiancé, husband or loved one. The nameless Maiden, the main heroine of Der müde Tod (The Weary Death, known in English-language countries as Destiny, 1921), while looking for her fiancé, who was kidnapped by Death, tries three times to regain his life and finally, overcome by Death, commits suicide. Two queens of Burgundy in Die Nibelungen (The Nibelungs, 1924), Kriemhild and Brunhild, motivated by resentment and vengeance, as well as by unfulfilled love, finally appear to be zombie-like self-destructive monsters, destroying the social and political order, and the lives of many human beings. The paper, with the use of the psychoanalytic concepts of melancholy and the mourning “not-worked-out” by the persons who have lost their loved ones, analyses the ambiguous attitudes and self-destructive acts of these “women in black”..
