Opis:
In the medieval Poland, elements of the remembrance of the deceased were present in most Christian holidays and related folk customs. The whole year was imbued with ritual contacts with the dead, awaiting their arrival, presence and supporting them in various established ways. Such practices are recorded in the fourteenth and fifteenth century synodal statutes, parts of sermons and reflections of theologians, scholars and chroniclers who studied the attitudes and behaviour of the faithful which grew out of the native traditions and contained reflections of the archaic notions of the fate of the dead. The souls of the dead which were properly taken care of after death were leaving the mundane world with the prospect of subsequent numerous visits. The establishment of contact with the dead in their own world, outside the human settlements, at the crossroads, on graves or in other places was to make the souls share their knowledge of the future with the living. As beings which belonged to another world, they were believed to possess the knowledge of its secrets and the ability to reveal signs of divinatory nature concerning the future of the living. These traditional beliefs and practices intertwined with the dominant Christian behaviour and attitudes associated with the death and the funeral, as well as the methods of supporting the soul of the deceased recommended by the Church.

The article focuses on the interpretation of the passive forms of the verb ἐγείρωused with reference to Jesus’s resurrection. It offers a detailed analysis of the deployment of the word in the Greek text of the New Testament as well as discusses the possibility of interpreting Greek passive forms in a reflexive way. The verb ἐγείρωappears in various contexts and it is analyzed here depending on its meaning in a given context (primarily “to raise” and “to raise someone”). When the verb means “to raise,” it is intransitive, and its passive forms should be interpreted as reflexive. When it refers to resurrection, passive forms may be interpreted in the same way, but since they refer also to other persons apart from Jesus (e.g. John the Baptist), they should be treated as passive. While Jesus – as God – could have raised himself, people could not have done the same on their own – they were raised by God. It is a theological argument, then, that plays a role here. Furthermore, it seems that when used with reference to resurrection, the verb should be treated as transitive (as corroborated by its active forms), which further justifies the interpretation of the passive forms as passive.

Commemoration in public space is usually associated with the creation of official objects related to important events or individuals, most often in the form of monuments or plaques. In the paper, the author considers alternative forms of commemoration which, by existing in the social space, invade privacy, taking into account not only artistic activities such as Stolpersteine/Gunter Demnig’s “stumbling stones” but also, for example, candles or flowers at accident sites. So, the author examines non-monumental forms of commemoration and considers the questions related to the reception of these objects, including their penetration into common cultural spaces.

The thesis that the Khirbet Qumran community was a branch of the larger Essene movement has dominated scholarship since the discovery of the first Dead Sea Scrolls. The number of books and articles challenging the theory that the Scrolls found in the caves belonged to a sectarian community that lived at Khirbet Qumran – and that these sectarians should be identified as Essenes – indicates that we are far from a consensus concerning the history of the Qumran history. What has largely been neglected in this debate is Flavius Josephus, who alone among the extant Second Temple Period authors claims to have been an Essene. This article examines the importance of Josephus as an eyewitness to Essene beliefs and practices in the first century C.E. It suggests that his descriptions of the Essene admission procedure matches the latest version of the Serek ha-Yahad, which documents changes in the practices and beliefs of this sect during the first century C.E. The study seeks to show that the Serk belonged to a sectarian library that is archaeologically connected with Khirbet Qumran and that this library was more widely dispersed among the caves than previously recognized. The article builds on this evidence to propose that we can connect the Serek and Josephus to Khirbet Qumran, and that this text was used as a sort of archaeological blueprint for this settlement. The evidence examined in this article reveals that Josephus is our only extant witness to life at Khirbet Qumran during its later occupational phase (Periods II–III, ca. 4 B.C.E.–73/4 C.E.).

This article is a inquiry about how Barrès (1862-1923) handles the religious rite of pilgrimage. Barrès stages in his writings three successive forms of pilgrimage, revealing what is sacred to him at different times. The pilgrimage to a museum or to the birthplace of an artist is typical for the egotism and the humanism of the young Barrès, expressed in the Cult of the Self (1888-1891). After his conversion to nationalism, Barrès tries to unite the sons of France and to instill in them a solemn reverence for “the earth and the dead” ; for that purpose he encourages in French Amities (1903) pilgrimages to historical places of national importance (battlefields; birthplace of Joan of Arc), building what Nora later called the Realms of Memory. The third stage of Barrès’ intellectual evolution is exemplified by The Sacred Hill (1913). In this book the writer celebrates the places where “the Spirit blows”, and proves open to a large scale of spiritual forces, reaching back to paganism and forward to integrative syncretism, which aims at unifying “the entire realm of the sacred”.

An analysis of sermons 56-62bis showed that Peter Chrysologus’ doctrine of the universal resurrection of the dead is not original and exhaustive. He presented to the catechumens the two most important arguments, explaining the truth of the faith: God’s omnipotence and resurrection of Christ. Bishop of Ravenna, commenting on the phrase “credo in carnis resurrectionem” also used the analogies referring to the cyclicality of the phenomena of nature (day and night, the seasons). Despite the developed reflection on this topic in the writings of early Christian writers of the fourth and fifth centuries, Peter Chrysologus did not use the arguments defending the truth about the resurrection of the dead resulting from: the purpose of life, the human structure and justice. His sermons also lack other topics: the relationship of the universality of the resurrection to the universality of redemption (Hilary of Poitiers), reflection on the properties of the resurrected body – his spirituality (Cyril of Jerusalem, Ambrose) and comparison of its properties to the body of an angel (Hilary of Poitiers, Jerome, Augustine). There is also no biblical argument that has been used, for example in the writings of St. Irenaeus of Lyons, or in the commentary of Venantius Fortunatus to the Symbol. Despite these shortcomings, Peter Chrysologus’ comment to an article about the general resurrection of the dead, deserves to be acknowledged – it is a testimony of faith of the Church in the 5th century Ravenna and the expression of his pastoral care of the faith of the community.

The modern pop-culturization of All Saints’ Day has encouraged the author to explore the profane sphere of this festival, using selected examples from Łódź cemeteries, as well as to write a short comparative description of a Latin American festival honouring the dead celebrated in early November. In the 20th century, visiting cemeteries in Poland on 1st November acquired some attributes of recreation and cultural tourism, visible in the atmosphere of a country fair and the ludic character of the cemetery surroundings, as well as the visitors’ commemorative, contemplative and cognitive motivations. Due to cultural changes, All Saints’ Day is increasingly perceived as a tourist event or even a cultural tourism product. The article presents a comparative description of the All Saints’ Day celebrations in Poland and the Day of the Dead in Latin America, and an analysis of visitors at selected Łódź cemeteries along with a description of the cemetery surroundings on 1st November 2019. The author has used unpublished research results from 2004, as well as discussing the secular and recreational aspects of All Saints’ Day.

Opis:
This article addresses the issue of intersemiotic translation of a painting, taking as the basis the functioning of Arnold Böcklin’s work The Isle of the Dead in European culture. The theoretical part of the article relates to the basic components of the theory of intersemiotic translation; in particular, it notes the importance of the difference between the closed system of signs and the possibility of their transposition into other sign systems. This part of the article also discusses the terminology used in intersemiotic translation. Since the creation of the first version of The Isle of the Dead in 1880, this work has been regarded as a masterpiece, though frequently – due to its numerous transpositions into various forms of art – as balancing on the border of kitsch. The descriptive and analytical part of the article, divided into four subsections, refers to the ways the painting has been transposed and has functioned in culture. The first subsection outlines the history of the work’s creation and discusses the fundamental changes in its reception, which were influenced by the political and cultural situation in European history. The subsequent parts of the article overview different art forms that have been inspired by Böcklin’s painting thus far. Examples of plastic art include copies, reproductions, and art forms that rupture the border between the image and the word (such as comic books) as well as three-dimensional realizations (such as theatrical sceneries and architectural designs). Examples of works of literature that were inspired by Böcklin’s painting include elements of prose, poetry, and drama (such as works by Strindberg, Aragon, and Tetmajer), whereas the inspirations found in music include musical poems composed by Rachmaninoff and others. Finally, this paper presents an analysis of film productions that have made reference to The Isle of the Dead, ranging from works created in the 1940’s to a commercial movie made in 2013.

The paper contributes to the discussion regarding the Corinthian opponents of the resurrection of the dead (1 Cor 15:12). In particular, it attempts to re-examine the thesis of the Epicurean framework of this controversy. The first part focuses on the main lines of interpretation of 1 Cor 15:12 and the presentation of the Epicurean thesis. It is followed by an analysis of Paul’s polemical statements against the thesis of his Corinthian opponents, “there is no resurrection of the dead” (1 Cor 15:12; cf. vv. 19, 29-34, 35). It is assumed that Paul clearly says that his opponents deny a bodily resurrection and future life – there is nothing after death. The third part of the paper reconsiders some hermeneutic factors concerning the identity of the Corinthian opponents of the resurrection. 1 Cor 15 contains terminological and ideological parallels to Epicureanism, especially, by way of opposition. Yet, the valuation of these data remains an open question.

For had he not expected the fallen to rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to pray for the dead, whereas if he had in view the splendid recompense reserved for those who make a pious end, the thought was holy and devout. Hence, he had this expiatory sacrifice offered for the dead, so that they might be released from their sin (2Ma 12:44-45). Alluding to those sentences from The Books of the Meccabean many Catholic authors encourage people to pray for the dead. In preamble of The Second Book of the Meccabean Poznań Bible we can read that “comtemporaneous Jewish maintain the belief of effectiveness of offering and pray for the dead”, and thanks to comment to verse 12,45 we find out that Judah directed the contribution so priests in Jerusalem made a propitiation, those who had left this world in sin can get God’s forgiveness which give them opportunity for resurrecting. What aim and sense had the offering for the dead? Since Torah did not predict such a pray , it had no sense and could not be made. On the other hand if the offering made by Yehuda Meccabens had some kind of sense, predicted by Torah, we can not ascribe to it any other sense, because prays for souls suffering in Purgatory are not predicted by Torah.

The intensity of the literary movement that took place in the Slovak territory integrated within the Kingdom of Hungary due to the Enlightenment policy of the ruler Joseph II can be properly illustrated by the genre-varied works of Ladislav Bartholomeides, an Evangelical priest and teacher. His first literary work Rozmlouvání Jozefa Druhého s Matějem Prvním Korvínus řečeným v království zemřelých, 1790 (The Conversation of Joseph II with Matthias I, Called Corvinus in the Kingdom of the Dead, 1790) is, in the first place, a significant evidence of the impact of the antique dialogue on the Slovak literary works. Bartholomeides updates the conversation of the dead, a popular genre form of the Enlightenment literature. Based on his predecessors’ assertions, he shapes the image of Joseph II as a clever and kind-hearted ruler. The Hungarian monarchs that Joseph II meets after his death defend his Enlightenment reforms. A critical reflection can be heard from Joseph’s lips. In terms of the contemporary Enlightenment writing, Bartholomeides put emphasis on the aesthetic category of “ingenuity”. In his attempt at an objectified interpretation of Joseph II’s political actions, he appeals also to his compatriots’ national sentiments. By the fact that the relationship of the Hungarian rulers with the Slavic ethnicity and its language is positive, he indirectly encourages them to cultivate their mother tongue. He gives the conversation also distinctive religious characteristics, he points out the connection between the earthly and the eternal life, since it is only immortality that gives purpose to the ruler’s earthly journey.

Third part contains a critique of the Chestertonian ideas carried out in the spirit of John D. Caputo’s radical hermeneutics. One of the main goal of this hermeneutics is breaking the unity of tradition. In the fourth part they are presented concrete examples of the struggle of Polish (the construction of the Temple of Divine Providence) and Swiss (debate on changing the national anthem) democracy with the traditions of their ancestors.

The basic legal act that regulates the management of cemeteries is the Act of 31 January 1959 on cemeteries and burial of the dead, which sets forth that the maintenance and management of municipal cemeteries lies with the respective mayors or governors of the towns and cities where cemeteries are located. NIK auditors examined whether self-governments met their duties in this respect. The detailed audit objectives comprised the evaluation of the regularity of the organisation of tasks related to management and maintenance of municipal cemeteries, the regularity of setting, collecting and accounting for payments for graves, and the regularity of expenditures related to cemeteries maintenance.

Opis:
The All Souls’ Day (Yü-lan-p’en) in Chinese Buddhism dates back to the eighth century and is celebrated till modern times. The present author introduces the origin of this feast, its doctrinal justification and its relationship to the Chinese ancestors’ worship. Then he shows the course of the holidays based on a publication by J.J.M. de Groot from the late nineteenth century. In the last part of the article, the author discusses the meaning of the holidays, the unique ability to adapt Buddhism and universality of expressing the honour to the dead. Although Christianity possesses a doctrine of last things and its influence in the eighth century in China was significant, however, Buddhism was capable to better enter the traditional ancestors’ worship, and the worship of the dead gained popularity that is enjoyed till today.

The author juxtaposes the little-known dialogue treatise of Jakub Zajączkowski’s Rozmowy filozoficzne (Philosophical Conversations, 1780) with its French prototype, Observations philosophiques (1771) by François Xavier de Feller. The works refer to the Pre-Enlightenment and Enlightenment philosophical and theological discussions in which issues in the field of natural science, geology, astronomy, and physics arise. The comparison yields some interesting conclusions.

Opis:
During the first cholera epidemic in Vilnius in 1831, a hospital for cholera patients was set up in the Pohulanka district. Over a thousand patients were treated there, of whom approximately half died. Although it was intended for the Roman Catholic population, people of various faiths were admitted. The article is an attempt at a demographic and social analysis of those who died during the epidemic, with the source for the research the register of those who died of cholera, drawn up and kept between April 10, 1831 and January 3, 1832 by Father Kazimierz Kontrym. Thanks to the preserved data, it was possible to determine the age structure of 553 men and women, their religion, social status, information on whether they received the last rites and where they were buried.

Opis:
The paper analyses the significance of the role of parenting and guardianship in the digital games The Walking Dead and Heavy Rain. The aim is to present, analyse and explain the phenomenon of myth, mythical structures in digital games, culture, and brand identity. R. Barthes’ semiotic theory was used, which analyses constructs through denotation, connotation, and myth. The units of research analysis are scenes from the games that will be presented, described, interpreted, and understood by deconstruction analysis. In the first part, the phenomenon of myth is theoretically elaborated, and then the mythic structure in digital games is analysed. The focus is on myth as a phenomenon, which from a pedagogical point of view, shows the role of parenting and guardianship. Also, the analysis of the connotative sign shows the influence of the media on digital culture, but also on the creation of elements of brand identity of digital games. We will confirm these theses by analysing the content of the mythical structure. The unit of analysis is the mise-en-scène and refers to everything that interacts with the digital game and the player. The central concept is a semiotic analysis of the psychological concept of fidelity that is connected to the model of brand identity through the model of attachment. Finally, through a semiotic analysis of the attachment construct, the attachment construct from the aspect of brand identity is also presented. The brand was observed according to J. N. Kapferer’s theory and analysed at the message and sign level. The contribution of this study is manifested in an interdisciplinary approach to work through marketing, psychology, pedagogy, media theory and semiotics.

Opis:
In this progressing virtualization, time has come also for the realm of death, which in a natural way joined the cyber-reality, shaping a new dimension of commemorative-funeral practices present in the funeral culture. The internet has become not only a vehicle for memory, but also a place for creating its new forms. The article attempts to identify and general characteristics of the activities of Polish Facebook users connected with the memory of loved ones, in the context of the possibilities provided by the portal itself. The methodology of the work encompassed the analysis of the lite-rature and the review of the above portal from the media perspective, without considering the religious perspective.
W artykule podjęto próbę zidentyfikowania i ogólnej charakterystyki przejawów aktywności polskich użytkowników portalu Facebook związanej z pamięcią o bliskich zmarłych, w kontekście możliwości udostępnianych przez sam portal. Metodologia pracy objęła analizę literatury przedmiotu oraz przegląd portalu z perspektywy medioznawczej, bez uwzględnienia perspektywy religijnej.
