Writing an academic history of Polish art was an urgent task of art historians after World War I, when the country regained its political independence. An important and creditable achievement in that respect was a study by Michał Walicki and Juliusz Starzyński, published in 1934 as a kind of supplement to the monumental Geschichte der Kunst von der altchristlichen Zeit bis zur Gegenwart by the Marburg historian Richard Hamann, translated at that time into Polish. In 1936, the work of the Polish scholars was published again in the form of a separate book. The paper focuses on three problems that were addressed in it: the cultural and artistic ties of Poland to the West, the vernacular features of Polish art, and the presence of the “Eastern art” in Polish artistic heritage. The author examines also the question whether those issues were related to the political, social, and cultural reality of the Second Polish Republic.

Opis:
The research paper focuses on the dystopian reality depicted in Suzanne Collins’s the Hunger Games trilogy. I shall primarily discuss the social and political relations established in the post-apocalyptic country – Panem, and how they affect the quotidian life. Crucial here is the clash between two realms comprising the world represented in the novels – dystopian districts and the seemingly utopian Capitol. The juxtaposition of two completely different ‘constituents’ of the country shapes the mutual relations between the Panem inhabitants – these within the districts, amongst them and between the center and the peripheries. The Hunger Games (2008), Catching Fire (2009) and Mockingjay (2010) consecutively portray the history of dystopian civilization from the entropic reality succeeding after the Dark Days, through a coincidental chain of events initiated during the 74th Hunger Games, to the ultimate armed conflict bringing hope and the promise of a new beginning. Pivotal in the oppressive world is the concept of the savior in the person of Katniss Everdeen who, initially unconsciously and unintentionally, contributes to igniting the final revolt against the dictatorial regime of President Snow. The aim of the paper is to analyze how the author represents the realm of Panem with regard to the complex relations between the center and the periphery.

W Archiwum Centrum Dokumentacji Zsyłek, Wypędzeń i Przesiedleń Uniwersytetu Pedagogicznego w Krakowie gromadzone są zbiory związane z szeroko pojętymi przymusowymi migracjami obywateli polskich. Zbiory te w większości nie mają charakteru instytucjonalnego, ale są związane z losami konkretnych osób lub rodzin, które doświadczyły zsyłek, wypędzeń i przesiedleń. Znaczna część zbiorów dotyczy polskich Sybiraków. Cennym i wartościowym materiałem do badań ich losów są zgromadzone w archiwum źródła epistolarne (które ze względu na zewnętrzną formę można podzielić na trzy grupy: listy, kartki pocztowe i grypsy). Przede wszystkim są one „materiałem dowodowym” i swego rodzaju potwierdzeniem, że konkretne osoby zostały wywiezione do Związku Sowieckiego. Ponadto umożliwiają prześledzenie drogi, którą przebyli Sybiracy oraz poznanie ich losów w różnych okresach czasu i miejscach - od okresu przedwojennego i życia na Kresach II RP, przez pobyt na zesłaniu, opuszczenie Związku Sowieckiego, życie w polskich osiedlach w Afryce, Indiach, w Nowej Zelandii, przyjazd i życie w Wielkiej Brytanii, czy Polsce. Co więcej, dają informacje o realiach życia codziennego, warunkach bytowych, stosunkach społecznych np. w przedwojennej Polsce, na zesłaniu w ZSRS lub w Afryce czy Indiach w latach czterdziestych XX w. W końcu mogą stanowić przyczynek do analizowania postaw i zachowań, które prezentowali polscy zesłańcy w kryzysowych sytuacjach.
The Archive of the Centre for Documentation of Deportations, Expulsions and Resettlement of the Pedagogical University of Kraków collects the records concerning the broadly defined forced migrations of the Polish citizens. Most of these records do not have an institutional character but are rather linked to particular individuals or families affected by the deportations, expulsions and resettlements. The largest part of the records concerns the so-called Polish 'Sybiraks', or deportees to Siberia, including the epistolary materials, which, based on their external form, can be divided into three groups: letters, postcards and secret messages smuggled in or out of prisons. In the first place, these sources are the evidence and confirmation that particular individuals were deported to the Soviet Union. Furthermore, they allow us to trace the way the Sybiraks moved, and to reveal their fortunes at different times and places: from the interwar period and life at the 'Kresy' (Eastern Borderlands) of the Second Polish Republic, through the exile in the Soviet Union, their rescue and life at the Polish settlements in Africa, India and New Zealand, to the arrival and life in the United Kingdom or Poland. In addition, these records provide us with some information on the realities of their everyday life, conditions of existence and social relations in the different settings. Lastly, the sources might contribute to the analysis of the attitudes and behaviour of the Polish deportees in emergency situations.

We study the integrability of two-dimensional autonomous systems in the plane of the form $\dotx=-y+X_s(x,y)$, $\doty=x+Y_s(x,y)$, where X_s(x,y) and Y_s(x,y) are homogeneous polynomials of degree s with s≥2. First, we give a method for finding polynomial particular solutions and next we characterize a class of integrable systems which have a null divergence factor given by a quadratic polynomial in the variable $(x^2+y^2)^{s/2-1}$ with coefficients being functions of tan^{−1}(y/x).

Artykuł ten przedstawia część wyników badań, które autorka przeprowadziła w ramach pracy nad niepublikowaną rozprawą doktorską pt. Projekt wzorcowy buddyjskiego ośrodka odosobnieniowego. Badania bazują na różnorodnych metodach: autorka bada in situ wiele różnorakich buddyjskich obiektów architektonicznych na Wschodzie i na Zachodzie, projektuje wnętrza ośrodków buddyjskich na Zachodzie i analizuje, które aspekty architektury buddyjskiej są ponadczasowe i ponadkulturowe, a które są efektem lokalnych wpływów. W efekcie tych badań wyłania się warstwa symboliczna architektury obiektów buddyjskich, która warta jest zachowania we współczesnych obiektach kultu buddyjskiego w trakcie transpozycji buddyzmu ze Wschodu na Zachód. Wyraźne również staje się, które z uwarunkowań kształtujących tę architekturę i architekturę wnętrz mają znaczenie tylko kulturowe, które zaś socjologiczne.
This article presents part of research results, which author was performing as part of a non-published PhD work: Design of a model Buddhist retreat center. The work is based on different methods: author is testing “in situ” many different Buddhist architectural objects in the East and in the West, designs interiors of Buddhist centers in the West, and analyses, which aspects of Buddhist architecture are timeless and intercultural, and which are the result of local influences. As a result of that research, some symbolic layer of architectural Buddhist objects emerges. It is worth of being preserved in the contemporary Buddhist centers, during transposition of Buddhism from the East to the West. It becomes as well very clear, which conditions, shaping this architecture and interior design have only cultural or sociological meaning.

Usługi społeczne związane z czynnościami mającymi na celu zaspokajanie podstawowych potrzeb społeczeństwa są istotnym czynnikiem aktywizującym społeczności lokalne. Samorządy gminne podejmowały takie przedsięwzięcia na podstawie ogólnych przepisów ustawy o finansach publicznych i samorządzie gminnym. Z dniem 1 stycznia 2020 r. weszła w życie uchwalona w dniu 19 lipca 2019 r. ustawa o realizowaniu usług społecznych przez centra usług społecznych, określająca zakres usług społecznych, sposób tworzenia centrów usług społecznych i ich strukturę organizacyjną. W opracowaniu przedstawione zostały podstawowe zagadnienia dotyczące określenia usług społecznych w doktrynie oraz w wyżej wspomnianej ustawie, a ponadto zwrócona została uwaga na przewidziany prawem sposób tworzenia centrów: bądź jako nowych jednostek organizacyjnych gminy, bądź przekształcanie dotychczasowych ośrodków pomocy społecznej. Zadania w zakresie usług społecznych określono jako zadania własne o charakterze nieobowiązkowym, stąd gminom pozostawiono ocenę potrzeby tworzenia takich centrów. Przedstawiona została też krótko struktura organizacyjna centrum, ze zwróceniem uwagi na pozycję prawną dyrektora centrum usług społecznych.
Social services related to activities aimed at meeting the basic needs of society are an important factor activating local communities. Commune self-governments undertook such projects on the basis of general provisions of the Act on Public Finance and commune self-government. On January 1, 2020, the Act on the provision of social services by social service centers, adopted on July 19, 2019, entered into force, specifying the scope of social services, the method of creating social service centers and their organizational structure. The study presents the basic issues concerning the definition of social services in the doctrine and in the aforementioned Act, and moreover, attention was paid to the method of establishing centers provided for by law: either as new organizational units of the commune or transforming the existing social welfare centers. Tasks in the field of social services were defined as own, non-obligatory tasks, therefore communes were left to assess the need to create such centers. The organizational structure of the center is also briefly presented, with attention being paid to the legal position of the director of the social services center.

Text is a novel of manners with elements of a thriller, a noir, and a detective novel (but the above-mentioned complementary elements fulfill only a supportive role, because the criminal intrigue exposed at the very beginning is treated marginally amounts to a starting point for deeper considerations of the psychological and sociological nature). Due to the peculiar presentation of the image of the Center (here: Moscow), Text fits into the vision of Moscow as the core of Russian predatory capitalism, exuberant consumerism, glitz, semblance and ruthless struggle for recognition in the ranking of successful people, which is presented in contemporary Russian literature. Its fundamental value is the fact that the realization of the author's idea is mainly due to the confrontation of megalopolis with images of the periphery, which can be regarded as satellite cities of the capital. In his perception of Russia, Glukhovsky is close to Roman Senchin and, similarly to the latter, he believes that the traditionally understood center-periphery, city-village conflict is disappearing, because eventually it turns out that (despite the spatial and social diversity) none of these places (mainly because of conspicuous regressive tendencies) does not give a person a chance for free development and self-realization.

The Government Administration Service Center in Warsaw is the leading example of application of a legal institution – an institution of the budget economy. This entity is part of the administrative apparatus and performs public tasks. At the same time, this entity conducts business activity, which allows it to be considered an entrepreneur. The basic question discussed in the article is the mutual relationship between the two roles of the subject. The practice indicates that combining them is not a simple matter, because there is a tendency in the activity of this institution to increase the role of the entity as an entrepreneur. Consequently, it may pose a threat to the basic role which the entity is designed to perform, that is implementation of public tasks.

Martin Luther war von Beruf Alttestamentler. Er verdiente seinen Lebensunterhalt als Professor für Bibelwissenschaft an der Universität Wittenberg und hat nur 13% seiner 43 Jahre Vorlesungstätigkeit dem Neuen Testament gewidmet (1515-17; 1531: Römerbrief, Galaterbrief, Hebräerbrief), 87% aber dem Alten Testament, v.a. dem Psalter und der Genesis. Schon dass er konsequent am Hebräischen Urtext als der Veritas Hebraica gearbeitet und alle zukünft igen Generationen von Theologen auf diese Methode verpflichtet hat, sichert ihm dauerhaft Geltung. Grundlage für seine Wertschätzung des Alten Testaments war seine konsequente christologische Exegese, die er mit dem Gedanken der „Mitte der Schrift “ verband. Am Beispiel von Ps 22 wird plastisch illustriert, wie Luthers Ansatz in die Textauslegung, ja sogar in die Textkritik hineinwirkt. Die großen Leistungen haben aber auch Schattenseiten: die unhistorische Verabsolutierung nur einer Rezeptionsform, der unerträgliche Antijudaismus und gewalthafte Umdeutungen.
Martin Luther was by profession an Old Testament scholar; he earned his living as a professor of Biblical Science at the University of Wittenberg. He devoted only 13% of his 43 years of lectures to the New Testament (1515-17, 1531: Letter to the Romans, Letter to the Galatians, Letter to the Hebrews), but 87% to the Old Testament, esp. to the Psalms and Genesis. He has consistently worked on the Hebrew “Urtext” as the Veritas Hebraica and has committed all future generations of theologians to this method; already this assures him permanent validity. Th e basis for his appreciation of the OT was his consistent christological exegesis. „What teach Christ“ was the „center“ of the Old Testament. Th e example of Ps. 22 illustrates how Luther‘s approach is applied to the interpretation of the text, and even to the textual criticism. However, the enormous achievements also have shadows: the unhistorical absolutisation of only one form of reception, the intolerable anti-Judaism, and the partly vigorous Christological reinterpretation.

Aziz Suryal Atiya was an Egyptian Coptic Studies expert, historian and orientalist specializing in the study of the Crusades era. He published several important books, including primarily The Crusades in the Later Middle Ages (1938). He contributed to the creation of the Institute of Coptic Studies in Cairo in the 1950s. He was also the originator and founder of the Middle East Center at the University of Utah, which today is one of the most important centers of wide science research on the Middle East. This article discusses the background and circumstances of the establishment of the Middle East Center and the Aziz S. Atiya Library for Middle Eastern Studies, both at the University of Utah, which is the fifth largest institution of its kind in North America.
Aziz Suryal Atiya był egipskim koptologiem oraz historykiem i orientalistą specjalizującym się w studiach nad epoką wypraw krzyżowych. Opublikował kilka ważnych dzieł, w tym przede wszystkim The Crusades in the Later Middle Ages (1938). Doprowadził do powstania Instytutu Studiów Koptyjskich w Kairze w latach 50. ubiegłego stulecia. Był również pomysłodawcą i założycielem Centrum Badań Bliskowschodnich na Uniwersytecie Stanu Utah, które do dzisiaj jest jednym z najważniejszych centrów nauki dotyczącym badań nad Bliskim Wschodem w szerokim kontekście. Niniejszy artykuł opowiada o tle i okolicznościach powołania Centrum Badań Bliskowschodnich oraz Biblioteki na Rzecz Badań Bliskowschodnich im. Aziza S. Atiyi na Uniwersytecie Stanu Utah, która jest piątą co do wielkości tego typu instytucją w Ameryce Północnej.

Opis:
The Polish legislator introduced a series of mechanisms limiting the possibility of turnover of agricultural real estate. The amendment to the Act on the Formation of Agricultural System, binding since 30 April 2016, has introduced several limitations in the acquisition of agricultural real estate. The rule has been adopted that only an individual farmer may be the acquirer of farming land, which excludes e.g. a commercial law company. These limitations also apply to the division of inheritance. The acquisition by relatives is not subject to the restrictions contained in the discussed regulation, but the inheritance by non-relatives is only possible under the statutory requirements. In the division of inheritance, the estate may be acquired by an individual farmer, or by other subjects who obtained the approval of the President of the National Center for Support of Agriculture. The inclusion of the above clauses in the inheritance section is not understandable and does not serve any purposes defined in the preamble to the law. It unnecessarily complicates the turnover. Fortunately, the most common divisions of inheritance, i.e. those in which relatives participate, are excluded from these constraints.
