Opis:
The present paper explores Durtal’s conversion as the refusal of any fixed reference. The reflections of the hero on his personal experience, but also on the social transformations are characterised by the metaphysical seriousness and semantic experiments. The constant lexical substitution arouses the curiosity of the reader: its referential opacity is only apparent. Thus, the writer emphasizes that going beyond the beaten path requires a new mode of expression where meaning no longer depends on the rehashing of commonplaces, but relies on semantic mismatches and prolonged tensions between juxtaposed terms. Likewise, social transformations strongly disapproved of by the hero become the source of paradoxical reasoning where truth is expressed through the negativity of judgment. Nevertheless, despite the lucidity of his social and ethical judgments, Durtal remains blind to the imperfection of his own conversion. Moreover, the frequent recourse to paradox demonstrates that the protagonist is still in doubt which announce a long spiritual path of true conversion.

Opis:
Strängnäs Cathedral, located in an old town 80 km from Stockholm, houses a rich 17th cen-tury library. In the collection are mainly spoils of the Thirty Years’ War, including Polonica. Altogether, the library stocks 2000 volumes comprising 4000 titles, most of which are writ-ten in Latin and German. In addition to theological dissertations and Bible translations are books on such subjects as law, history, philosophy, medicine, mathematics and grammar. The Polish collection, which was brought over mainly from Olomouc, is relatively small, but early and not known well. On the author’s initiative, it is now being studied within the auspi-ces of the project “Polonica in the Cathedral Library in Strängnäs”.

The name ‘chapter’ is the Latin word ‘capitulum’, which stands for eccle- siastical bodies consisting of the clergymen, or a meeting and deliberation of this body. The community referred to as chapter was a derivative phenomenon of the canonicate, assuming institutional and corporate features. The chapters existing by the bishops’ cathedrals played an important role in the history of the Church, since they led the common life and performed a festive service for the God in the cathedral church; they fulfilled the role of the advisory body for the bishop, and from 12th century they elected bishops. The chapters functioning by churches other than the cathedral ones, known as the collegiate, never had such rights. Their essential task was to perform the cult of God in their churches. As a result of Trident Council there was a distinction made between the role of chapter houses and they were subjected to ordinaries.

Louis MacNeice translated Aeschylus’ Agamemnon in such a way that some were reminded of T.S. Eliot’s playMurder in the Cathedral. Both plays were staged in the mid-1930s in England, and the authors correspondedwith each other. At first sight, this is the story of a minor figure imitating greater stylishness. A closer analysis, however, reveals that Eliot drew largely on Aeschylus’ Agamemnon. This is new, yet on second thoughts, notsurprising: being obsessed by heritage and tradition, Eliot was surely a fervent reader of classical tragedies, perhaps even a fine connoisseur. Nevertheless, there is another story, lurking in the background so to say, thistime about a great poet indebted to a subtle and sensitive mind.

The article presents the results of the research on the careers of twelve clergymen who became members of the Warmia cathedral chapter in the first century of its existence. The author discusses the careers of two bishops from Warmia [Ermland] – Eberhard von Neisse and Johann von Meissen along with the careers of other clergymen who also held important positions in the Church beyond the Warmia canonry (parish priests, canons of other chapters, workers in the chancery of grand masters). Thanks to a wide range of sources and studies along with the reanalysis and reinterpretation of the sources already known, we have managed to establish new facts and eliminate old inaccuracies which had for decades been present in historiography.

Formation of the Vilnius Cathedral Chapter was a long process since its inception in 1388 to the middle of the sixteenth century. As the capital city of the cathedral chapter of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from the beginning of its existence in the system and the organization was inspired by the Cracow Cathedral Chapter. Under the papal foundation bull by pope Urban VI Pontifex Maximus to erect bishopric of Vilnius the first two of the Prelature were founded (provost and dean) and 10 canonries. All of them were endowed in 1387 by king Vladislav II Jagiello. The next four prelate names: custodian, archdeacon, scholastic and cantor, and two canonries were developed under the efforts of successive monarchs, bishops and Chapter. The structure of the Chapter was finally clarified around 1525, which since then consisted of six prelates and 12 canons. In such organizational frameworks the Vilnius corporation canons and prelates survived until the end of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Individual members of the Chapter had a specific range of privileges and obligations which in the case of prelates were assigned to each of the dignity of the individual. Competence of canons were evolving, depending on the current needs. In the reporting period, the corporation prelates and canons in gremio constituted under the church law a control body of the actions of diocesan bishops, which was de facto institution co-managering of the diocese.

In the literature on historical archives of the Catholic Church in Poland there is no scholarly monograph devoted to them. The only textbook is the one written by H.E. Wyczawski, Przygotowanie do studiów w archiwach kościelnych (Preparing for studies in church archives). The publications, appearing after the war, did not present any theoretical findings which could be applied in church archival studies (it refers to developing the theoretical decisions on creating archival fonds, their names etc.), but they certainly provided the impetus and encouragement to continue the action which was initiated before the war. The program developed in the interwar period was adjusted to the new conditions; emphasis was put on practical guidelines for activities related to the founding and functioning of a historical archive in the diocese.

Opis:
Landowners and intelligence are two layers of Polish society that had complemented each other and played an important role in maintaining of the Polishness in the era of partitions, and seriously contributed to regaining independence in 1918. An educated landowner, or an intellectual of landowner origin, it was often difficult to define belonging to a particular social layer. After the January Uprising, publicists were writing about gentry as “country intelligentsia”, which had to play an important role in the modernization of the Polish countryside. In the light of the previous findings of historiography, it appears that indeed the landowning environment became one of the main groups of recruitment of the Polish intelligentsia in the second half of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. An analysis of the sources of various provenance shows that one of the most important intellectual professional groups, to which were getting first sons and then daughters from the landowners families, were scientists. The main research problem is the attempt to characterize people of science, who had abandoned the mansions and decided to pursue a career at universities in Cracow, Lviv and Warsaw, and after independence, also Poznań, Vilnius and Lublin. This issue will be discussed both in the broader context of collective fates as well as selected individual biographies of Polish scholars on landed genealogy. An important selection criterion will be their simultaneous involvement in various political and social ventures.
W świetle dotychczasowych ustaleń historiografii wynika, iż rzeczywiście środowisko ziemiańskie stało się jedną z głównych grup rekrutacji polskiej inteligencji w drugiej połowie XIX i pierwszej połowie XX w. Analiza źródeł różnej proweniencji wskazuje, iż jedną z najważniejszych inteligenckich grup zawodowych, do której trafiali najpierw synowie, a następnie i córki z rodzin ziemiańskich, byli naukowcy.

Opis:
In 1920, the Poles withdrew from Podole under the pressure of Bolshevik army. Leaving Latyczów with the Polish army, the local parish priest took the miraculous image of Our Lady of Latyczów. For ten years it was in the chapel of the middle school of Cecylia Plater-Zyberkówna Educational Society in Warsaw. In 1930, the Bishop of Łuck Adolf Piotr Szelążek decided to transfer it to the Diocese of Łuck. As the high altar in the Cathedral of Łuck had not been adapted to the image yet, it was placed for a few months in the parish church of Luboml. The image was in Luboml for several years, longer than it had been expected. Only at the end of 1935, after receiving disturbing news from Warsaw, Bishop Szelążek ordered to transport it secretly to Lutsk and hang it in the high altar, which had not been ready yet. The new high altar in the Cathedral Church of Łuck was ready only for the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of Bishop Szelążk’s priesthood (10-11 September 1938). It was designed probably by an architect from Warsaw, prof. Kazimierz Skórewicz, and another architect - Władysław Sawicki – improved some details and oversaw its installation in the Cathedral of Łuck. The image of Our Lady of Latyczów was in the Cathedral of Łuck for ten years. A few months after the end of World War II, on 6 August 1945, it was secretly deported from Łuck by the members of the Cathedral Chapter of Łuck and non-habited nuns of the Congregation of the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate, who were leaving Volhynia. Finally, the image found a haven in Lublin. For several years it was in the chapels of the Sisters Servants - first at 3 Bernardyńska Street (1945-1984), then at 9 I Armii Wojska Polskiego Street (1984-2014). Since 2014 the image has been worshiped in the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Bursztynowa Street.

The Archive of the Cracow Chapter contains a series of 160 account books (from the first half of the 16th century to the beginning of the 20th century). The first 145 books refer to modern times. A dozen or so books concern the 19th and early 20th centuries, and the oldest book dates back to 1513. These account books were produced by the procurators of the Chapter, later – officials subordinate to them. The books contain information on the expenses related to the property of the Chapter (houses, villages, manors, landed property), individual canons, liturgy celebrated in the Cathedral (both daily and such celebrations as funerals of bishops or royal coronations), remuneration for people working for the Chapter (e.g. notaries, procuratores, rectors of the cathedral school). In addition, any renovations, changes in the equipment of the cathedral and the chapter buildings were carefully recorded in them. Due to the amount and variety of information, the account books are a mine of knowledge for historians, art historians and conservators; however, these books have sporadically been used by researchers so far. There are many similarities in the account books that make up the series, which is why the same form was used for their description; it was only slightly modified over the decades. In the collection marked with the reference number R.Cap., there are other account books concerning only some of the Chapter activities such as expenses for the cathedral sacristy, the sums stored in the treasury and rough drafts.

The main aim of this study was to present the outstanding composition created by Bartłomiej Pękiela, Missa Pulcherrima, giving the historical, biographical, and stylistic context. The author succinctly depicted, first the historical background in which the composer lived and created, sketching the rulers of Poland of the time: Sigismund III, Vladislaus IV and John Casimir, against the important political events of the period. Having delivered the most up-to-date research, he carried on to a closer presentation of the composer himself, with a few biographical details, like these of his work as the Royal Choirmaster in Warsaw, and then the Cathedral Choirmaster at the Wawel Castle in Cracow. The author of this paper drew heavily on the studies made by eminent Polish musicologist, Rev. Hieronim Feicht (1894–1967), whose research on the biography and compositions of Bartłomiej Pękiel has not be rivaled so far by anything equally insightful and exhaustive. This study is an attempt to show Pękiel’s Missa Pulcherrima in the context of mass service compositions, proving that in its extraordinary composing and stylistic values it definitely differs from the other mass pieces by this composer written in the old style (stile antico). The said composition was created after 1655, when Pękiel moved from Warsaw to Cracow so as to undertake the position of the Cathedral Choirmaster at the Wawel Castle. Most probably, it was his last composition. A liable review of Bartłomiej Pekiel’s Missa Pulcherrima was rendered by expert in the Old Polish Music, Ewa Obniska: “Without doubt, it is the most outstanding old Polish mass, the stunning composition of outstanding artistry and unparalleled subtlety of melodic side […] the most tremendous religious masterpiece of the Polish Baroque – amongst those few which have lost nothing of their influential power despite centuries passing”.

Opis:
The article presents additional volumes found in the collections of the former Cathedral Library, formerly owned by the Canon of Gniezno Leonard Walkonowski, (around 1550-1617). The author pays special attention to the bindings of the volumes, trying to determine when and where they were made. On the other hand, thanks to a thorough analysis of the supralibros, it was possible to determine Walkonowski's affiliation with the Poraj family.
