The paper presents a reconstruction and an analysis of the Vistula river bed changes in the 19th and 20th centuries, performed on the basis of topographic maps. The analysis took into account both natural (floods, changes in rock-debris supply) and anthropogenic (e.g., river regulation, construction of water reservoirs) causes, which resulted in significant changes of the morphology of the Vistula river bed. To estimate the river bed changes the author used such parameters as: the length of the banks and changes of their location, the width of the river bed, and the surface of the river bed forms and their share in the river bed surface area.

In many countries of the northern hemisphere during winter period ice forms appear on various water bodies, which results in significant changes of physical, chemical and ecological conditions. These changes are different in rivers, channels, lakes or once-through reservoirs. On the terrain of Poland ice always caused considerable problems affecting intensive inland navigation and other river use. These problems appeared especially on the Vistula River, which in 17th and 18th century was one of the most navigable rivers in Europe. The Vistula is the largest Polish river, which flows from the south in the Carpathian Mountains to the Baltic Sea in the north. It is the second largest river, after Neva, of the Baltic Sea catchment. The length of the Vistula is 1047 km and its catchment amounts to 194 thousand km2. The predominant part of the Vistula river basin (87%) is now on Polish territory and the remaining (13%) catchment is in Belarus, Ukraine and Slovakia. The course of the Vistula can be divided into three distinctly different sections: upper, middle and lower. These river sections have appropriate catchments with their tributaries. There are hydraulic structures on the main river course and on its tributaries which serve navigation, hydroenergy, flood protection, water supply and recreation. All over the Vistula catchment there are frequent floods during spring and summer time resulting from excessive precipitation but in winter caused by ice phenomena. Numerous flow problems appear especially along the lower Vistula course because of ice phenomena and they result very often in severe flood problems. The Vistula has a very variable time and spatial discharge, because of existing climate conditions over its catchment. The aim of the paper is to present hydraulic and hydrologic characteristics of the Lower Vistula river with special emphasis on the management of this river section for navigation, hydroenergy, flood protection and water supply in view of ice phenomena appearing there. Information concerning changes of water characteristics due to various water temperatures are presented as well as on the formation of various forms of ice in flowing water. Numerous ice studies were carried out in Poland and especially on the Lower Vistula section as it was very ice prone and where many ice jams and ice-jam floods occurred. A special hydraulic situation existed at the mouth of the Vistula, which caused important floods in the 18th century and resulted in the construction of a special direct channel to the sea (Przekop Wisły) solving flood problems in this area. Information is presented on changes in open channel flow due to the appearance of ice cover and other ice forms. The paper includes ample information on the run, consequences and studies connected with a very important ice-jam-flood on the upper part of Włocławek reservoir in 1982.

This paper presents the perception of the Vistula river, the most important of Poland's rivers, by high-school students from selected Vistula towns and cities. The study of the perception of this river, conducted in 2006-2007, concerned, among other things, the symbolism of the Vistula, its role in nature and landscape of Poland, as well as the course of the river flowing through Poland. It was ascertained that most students perceive the Vistula as a symbol of Poland or the longest river in Poland, but they do not notice, for instance, its ecological role, although they are aware of its role in the landscape of Poland. The results of the study determine the direction and the topics of the geographic education concerning the Vistula river in Polish schools.

The study discusses accumulation and erosion processes which occurred in the bowl of Włocławek Reservoir in the period 1971-1992, and were analysed using digital batimetric maps. It also provides the results of the work of other authors concerning the assessment of the river sediments accumulated in the reservoir. Analysis of digital batimetric maps has shown that the materiał deposited in Włocławek Reservoir in the years 1971-1992 totalled about 18.3 million m3, which corresponds to approximately 0.87 million m3 of sediments per annum, and means a 4.5% loss of the reservoir's storage capacity. The volume of accumulation and erosion, assessed in this manner, approximates the earlier calculations performed using different research methods; it corroborates the fact that accumulation prevails in the balance of the sediments.

The article aims at describing the forms of the theme of the Vistula River in Czesław Miłosz’s poetry. For this purpose, it transpires to be necessary to take account of Miłosz’s biographical conditions and consider the attitude of the writer towards the poetic tradition of the theme. Above all, the article is an attempt to reflect on its symbolic meanings and metaphysical functions. Reading poems or fragments of poems dedicated to the Vistula River (from the 40s and 50s) enables the development of the following thesis: the presence of this theme serves as means to identify the specificity of Polish history and diagnose the essence of Polish historical fate.

Opis:
On the basis of hydrographic maps in the scale 1:50,000, an inventory of crenological objects in the lower part of the Vistula basin up to the Drwęca river basin in the south was made. The total number of these objects in the analyzed area is 308, with the highest number of solid sources – 161, followed by leakages – 125 and periodic sources – 17. The total efficiency of all outflows is very low, as it was estimated at 0.075 m3∙s–1. The most efficient source reaches only 1.0 dm3∙s–1, and only a few 0.7 dm3∙s–1.

The ditch through the Vistula Spit, connecting the Vistula Lagoon with the Baltic Sea is the huge investment, which may effect on the environment during the building and exploitation. Idea of this controversial investment still revives. Hypothetical effects of the ditch through the Vistula Spit on the ecosystem of the Vistula Lagoon and especially on its biodiversity of macrozoobenthos near the onvestment are discuss.

Celem pracy jest zbadanie znaczenia Wisły jak rzeki granicznej zarówno w kontekście historycznych podziałów kraju, jak i w obowiązującym podziale administracyjnym. Na podstawie map i literatury możliwe było określenie, na jakich odcinkach i w jakich okresach Wisła stanowiła granicę zapożyczoną z natury i gdzie rola Wisły jako rzeki granicznej cechuje się największą stabilnością.
This work concerns the importance of the Vistula as a border borrowed from nature in historical and current divisions of Poland. Forms of this division have changed over the centuries several times. The first form of spatial government was the so-called neighboring communities – opola. In the Middle Ages there were new forms of organization of space such as a province and castellany. In the following centuries these forms changed and evolved. There were counties, municipalities and provinces. The period of the partitions of Poland, as well as two world wars brought changes to the internal division of the country, imposed by the invader administration. Political boundaries were repeatedly changed too. In many of these divisions, the Vistula River served as a natural basis for the designation of a border. It should be noted, that there are places where the border is more than five hundred years old. The current administrative landscape of Poland is a result of government reforms in 1999, which established a three-tier division of the country. The role of the Vistula as a border in this division is also clearly visible.

Historic arcaded houses are part of the material heritage of the Vistula Delta. Unfortunately, their number is decreasing year by year. The article is the result of a query of available sources and field research carried out by the author in 2015-2020. The paper presents the current state of preservation the historic arcaded houses in Vistula Delta listed in the National Inventory of Historical Monuments. Criteria for the selection of test objects are described. The author has prepared a tabular list of arcaded houses with information about their location, type according to Kloeppel statistics, date of construction, technical condition and functions. The summary of the analysis are pie charts with a statistical presentation of the data collected by the author during the research.
Zabytkowe domy podcieniowe stanowią część materialnego dziedzictwa ujścia Delty Wisły. Niestety ich liczba z roku na rok maleje. Artykuł jest rezultatem kwerendy dostępnych źródeł oraz badań terenowych wykonanych przez autora w latach 2015-2020. W pracy przedstawiono aktualny stan zachowania zabytkowych domów podcieniowych Żuław Wiślanych. Opisano kryteria doboru obiektów do badań. Autor wykonał tabelaryczne zestawienie domów podcieniowych z informacjami o ich lokalizacji, typie wg statystyki Kloeppla, dacie budowy, stanie technicznym i funkcji. Podsumowaniem analizy są wykresy kołowe przedstawiające statystyczne ujęcie danych zebranych przez autora w trakcie badań.
