Opis:
This article analyzes typical problems that arise when translating scientific and technical texts in the field of geodesy from the Russian language into Ukrainian. The analysis of complex cases that appear in the process of translation of scientific texts gives us grounds to assert that their distribution into lexical and grammatical aspects is rather conditional, since in each language, including Ukrainian, the grammatical is combined with the lexical, and transmission methods in the translation of grammatical forms and structures often depends on their lexical content. The ways of overcoming these problems are suggested, which will contribute to the process of affirming in the scientific style specific traditions, inherent in the Ukrainian language, both at the lexical and grammatical levels. These traditions have taken the back seat under the influence of a long period of the Russian language dominating in the field of science.

Since modern Slavic studies lack a uniform concept of the Ukrainian redaction of the Church Slavonic language, this article analyzes the major achievements of Ukrainian linguistics in the study of this phenomenon. Applying the method of linguistic historiography, the author describes the emergence of a national concept, according to which written sources – reflecting the features of the Ukrainian language from different periods of its formation – attest to the existence of a single Ukrainian redaction. The development of views on the Church Slavonic language is evidenced by the works of M. Maksymovych, I. Ohienko, G.Y. Shevelov, V. Nimchuk. Today different schools are primarily concerned with the quantitative interpretation of particular features of the Ukrainian redaction. Such an interpretation is largely premised on the 19th‑century Russian philological tradition which does not take into consideration the historical differentiation of East Slavic. Burdened with problematic terms like Russian, such an approach remains in contrast with Ukrainian linguistics, which accepts the existence of the Ukrainian redaction of Church Slavonic since the times of Kyivan Rus’.

The article opens a series of planned publications, in which the authors present rare, dialectical, sometimes archaic lexical units extracted from the recently published dictionaries by Ivan Vahylevych. In two variants of Idyotykon and in the Dictionary of the South- Ruthenian Language they managed to search for about 700 lexical items, which either were omitted in the Etymological Dictionary of Ukrainian Language, or require more detailed lexicological commentary. 32 words start with A-B are discussed in the article.

This work describes specific morphological and syntactic features of Ukrainian scientific and technical speech in the context of the appearance of non-substantiated norms of the literary Ukrainian language of passive verbal constructions, and provides adequate methods for the translation of passive constructions from Russian into Ukrainian. The most common mistakes are found in the translation from the Russian language into Ukrainian syntactic constructions with passive verb forms, the causes for the appearance of these false constuctions are analyzed, and their inexpedient use is justified, as well as the need to use specific Ukrainian constructions when translating from Russian passive verbal constructions to the Ukrainian language.

Opis:
The article considers the phonetic and orthographic means that create the uniqueness of the national ethos. The deformation of Ukrainian phonetic features is revealed to have been caused by a number of social factors, which include: the lack of a state language policy, the consistent destruction of the native language of the nation, systematic Russian expansion in the areas of information and culture, the results of the colonial past, and state intervention in the internal laws of the language. The impact of alien (Russian) speech on the phonetic system of the Ukrainian language is shown, which has resulted in numerous pronunciation errors. The destruction of linguistic, melodic, volume, vocality and other language characteristics is described. The suggestions and the experience of the Spelling Project of 1999 on the phonetic system of the language are analysed.

W 2007 roku ukazał się mój artykuł zatytułowany Wyrazy niejasne w „Матеріалах до словника писемної та книжної української мови XV–XVIII ст.” J. Tymczenki. Starałem się w nim przyjrzeć bliżej 204 wyrazom, które nie zostały zadowalająco zidentyfikowane i zinterpretowane pod względem znaczeniowym lub w ogóle nie podjęto próby takiej interpretacji, co zostało zasygnalizowane znakiem zapytania. W wyniku moich żmudnych poszukiwań liczbę wyrazów nierozpoznanych co do formy lub znaczenia udało się ograniczyć do 56 jednostek. Spośród tych wyrazów, o których w artykule z 2007 roku napisałem, że „nie poddają się jednoznacznej interpretacji formalnej lub semantycznej”, aż 36 udało się całkowicie lub częściowo rozpoznać i opisać w niniejszej pracy w oparciu o nowe źródła historyczne i etymologiczne języków wschodniosłowiańskich oraz języka polskiego. Należy mieć nadzieję, że z biegiem czasu uda się zidentyfikować także pozostałe 20 wyrazów, które wciąż jeszcze skutecznie strzegą tajemnicy swojej proweniencji.
My article entitled Wyrazy niejasne w „Матеріалах до словника писемної та книжної української мови XV–XVIII ст.” J. Tymczenki (“Unclear words in Матеріали до словника писемної та книжної української мови XV–XVIII ст. by J. Tymczenko”) was published in 2007. In that article, I took a closer look at 204 words, which hadn’t been identified and interpreted in terms of meaning or had not even been the subject of any attempt at interpretation which. I signaled this with a question mark. As a result of my extensive research, the number words unrecognised in form or meaning has been reduced to 56. Among those 56 words about which in the article of 2007 I wrote: “they do not submit to unambiguous formal or semantic interpretation” as many as 36 have now been completely or partially recognized and described in this paper, based on new historical and etymological sources of East Slavonic and Polish languages. I hope, the remaining 20 words which still successfully guard the secret of their provenance will also be identified at some time.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest analiza głównych tendencji kształtowania się zasobu leksykalnego odmiany języka zachodnioukraińskiego w Galicji —na terenie dawnych AustroWęgier. Na specyfikę rozwoju oraz kształtowanie się ukraińskiego języka literackiego w opisywanym regionie wpłynęła wielojęzyczność środowiska, w którym miała miejsce aktywna interakcja międzyjęzykowa powodująca zapożyczenia znacznej części słownictwa z innych języków. Ówcześni językoznawcy przyczynili się, pod wpływem idei odrodzenia języków słowiańskich, do stworzenia podstaw gramatyczno-leksykalnych ukraińskiego języka literackiego w oparciu o język potoczny. W rezultacie spowodowało to zastosowanie form dialektalnych na płaszczyźnieogólnogalicyjskiej. Jednocześnie brak jednostek leksykalnych w języku potocznym został zrównoważony poprzez wprowadzenie zapożyczeń z języka starosłowiańskiego, rosyjskiego, polskiego oraz częściowo niemieckiego, jak również zastosowanie derywatów typowych dla języka ukraińskiego.
The article presents the analysis of main tendencies of the vocabulary formation of the western Ukrainian variant of standard Ukrainian in the territory of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, especially in Galicia. The specificity of the development and formation of the Ukrainian standard language in this region was a multilingual environment which comprised an active interlanguage interaction. These factors contributed to the borrowing of a significant part of the vocabulary from other languages. In addition, artists of that time, who were influenced by the idea of the Slavic languages’ revival, promoted the creation of grammar books and the lexical basis for the Ukrainian standard language through the use of a folk-colloquial variant. Consequently, this resulted in the use of the dialectal layer, including both general Galician words and peculiarly dialectal ones. The lack of lexical units in the colloquial speech was offset by borrowings from Church Slavonic, Russian, Polish and, in part, German according to the word-building models which were typical of Ukrainian

The article focuses on the concept of historical memory on the basis of the Ukrainian linguistics ofthe 1920s and 1930s. The aspects of the scientific work of linguists of the Kharkiv Philological School (O. Vetukhov, M. Yogansen, O. Kurylo, M. Nakonechnyi, K. Nymchynov, V. Simovych, O. Synyavskyi, S. Smerechynskyi, M. Sulyma, B. Tkachenko, О. Finkel), who were in creative interaction with the Slavic and European scientific circles, are characterised; the influence of the ideas of the Prague linguistic circle, in particular its structural-semantic paradigm, on the directions of scientific research of Ukrainian linguists during the mentioned period is noted. Attention is focused on the main achievements of Ukrainian linguistics in the field of stylistics. The work of O. Kurylo Attention on the modern Ukrainian literary language (1920) is analysed in view of the terminology apparatus of stylistics, including theoretical and methodological principles of Ukrainian and Slavic linguistics in general. The stylistic advisers of M. Gladkyi, which highlight the cultural aspects of journalism and literature, and peculiarities of word-formation in the language of the press and fiction, are discussed. The work Ukrainian phrase. Short Sketches (1928) by M. Sulyma, devoted to issues of stylistic morphology and stylistic syntax is investigated as well as the terminology of stylistics used in the work of S. Smerechynskyi Essays on the Ukrainian syntax (in connection with phraseology and stylistics) (1932); M. Yogansen’s scientific discoveries Elementary laws of versification (1922) and How the narrative is constructed. Analysis of Prose Samples (1927) as well as O. Finkel’s: A Brief Introduction to Theoretical Stylistics (1927), L. Bulakhovsky’s The Basics of Linguistics (1931–1932) are scrutinised. The course of B. Tkachenko’s Essay of Ukrainian Stylistics (Kharkiv, 1929–1930?), created under the influence of French stylistics by S. Bally is noted, in which for the first time in Ukrainian linguistics, the necessity of studying stylistics as a separate educational discipline was proved, its purpose and task were articulated, and conceptual apparatus outlined; the essence and nature of the interrelations of the literary language with individual and folk-colloquial language are investigated.

The author of the article analyses and summarizes research procedures, the results of application thereof to describe and map a special lateral area of existence in the Ukrainian language. It functions in a different area and temporal socio-lingual conditions in the form of resettlement dialects. Research into the multilingual and multidialectal areas prompts scientists to improve the methodology of dialectal research.

Proponowany artykuł ma dać odpowiedź na dwa, jakże ważne pytania: czym jest przekład audiowizualny oraz w jaki sposób zajęcia z przekładu audiowizualnego wpisują się w kwestię realizacji konkretnych zadań dydaktycznych, tzn. nauczania języka ukraińskiego na pewnym założonym poziomie. Wykonany przez studentów II roku cyklu magisterskiego projekt tłumaczenia warstwy dialogowej filmu Walentyna Wasianowycza Звичайна справа stał się probierzem ich umiejętności nie tylko w zakresie przekładu, ale i stopnia opanowania języka. W artykule przedstawiono i omówiono zarówno najczęściej pojawiające się błędy, jak również ciekawe rozwiązania translatorskie i sam proces tworzenia podpisów do filmu.
The present article aims at providing an answer to two important questions: what is audiovisual translation and in what do the audiovisual translation classes contribute to the execution of particular teaching tasks, i.e. the teaching of the Ukrainian language at a certain defined level. The project undertaken by the second-year students of Master’s programme involved the translation of the dialogue list of the film directed by Valentin Vasianovych „Звичайна справа”. It became the criterion, on the basis of which their skills not only of translation but also of their command of the Ukrainian language were assessed. The article presents the most frequent errors as well as interesting translation solutions and the very process of preparing film subtitles.

The study of the links between the style of Ruthenian deeds from the second half of the 16th – the mid-17th centuries and their Polish counterparts have just been started in Ukrainian historical linguistics. This paper aims to analyse the role of Polish acts and act language in the development of certain linguistic formulas in the Ruthenian privilege deeds from the second half of the 16th – the mid-17th centuries. The sections of inscriptio, promulgatio, salutatio, sanctio, datum, and subscriptio are at the heart of the research. At the stylistic level, in Ukraine the Ruthenian privilege deeds were proved to clearly follow the Polish documents, possibly due to the expansion of the Polish documents and the language: compulsory and prestigious among educated people. The influence manifests itself in the following way: the deeds where the inscriptio has a list of addressees became typical; the promulgatio went after the inscriptio; the salutatio received Polish-like linguistic formulas and – if this section appears – there was no promulgatio; the new prohibition formulas in the sanctio as well as the absence of corroboratio and vice versa; the establishment of formula sequence in the datum as well as the fixation of three date variants (short, medium, and expanded), and the modification of the datum formulas according to the Polish pattern; the Ruthenian deed subsciptio cogenty influenced by the Polish document (inter alia, king’s Latin signatures, Polish pattern of Ruthenian signatures); the presence of some clichés (not related to certain clauses) either formed according to the Polish pattern or used in the Ruthenian acts with expansion of such patterns; the support of verbal amplification as a mean of stylistic precept.

Artykuł poświęcony jest analizie metafory jako środka tworzenia terminów w terminologii biologicznej. Оkreślonа została rola metafory w naukowym obrazie świata w języku ukraińskim i polskim. Оpisano skojarzenia, które stały się podstawą przeniesienia metaforycznego.
The article focuses on the analysis of metaphor as a way of creating terms in a biological terminology. Тhe role of the metaphor in creation the scientifi c picture of the world of the Ukrainian and Polish languages has been described. It has been found out which associations became the basis of a metaphorical transfer.

The article presents methodological assumptions for textbooks aimed at Polish‑speaking students who study Ukrainian as part of a philological degree course. Particular attention has been paid to the inclusion of cultural context, the aim of which is not only to diversify strictly linguistic tasks, but above all to introduce the student to the world of a different culture.
Artykuł przedstawia założenia metodologiczne podręczników adresowanych do studentów polskojęzycznych, uczących się języka ukraińskiego na studiach filologicznych. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na uwzględnienie kontekstu kulturowego, którego celem jest nie tylko urozmaicenie zadań stricte językowych, ale przede wszystkim wprowadzenie studenta w świat innej kultury.
