    Odwołując się do tezy D. Roberta DeChaine’a zawartej w „Border Rhetorics: Citizenship and Identity on the US-Mexico Border”, w której autor postuluje zwrócenie uwagi na retoryczne funkcje granic artykuł analizuje polemikę z doksą granicy. W artykule omówione są wybrane przykłady artystycznego aktywizmu (artivism) z pogranicza meksykańsko-amerykańskiego oraz w obrębie Morza Śródziemnego od 2000 roku. Retoryczne znaczenie granicy, związane z wartościami, przekonaniami i postawami rozumiane jest jako doksa pogranicza, wpływająca na społeczne postrzeganie granic i migrantów. Omawiane w artykule prace artystów kwestionują związane z granicami narracje i podważają zasadność granic ze względu na ich szkodliwe skutki: tworzenie podziałów między ludźmi, społecznościami i środowiskiem naturalnym.
    Referring to D. Robert DeChaine’s argument in Border Rhetorics: Citizenship and Identity on the US-Mexico Border in which the author puts forward the need to analyze rhetorical functions of the border, the article examines the examples of challenging of the border doxa. Thereby the article discusses selected examples of border artivism taking place at the U.S.-Mexico border and the Mediterranean since the 2000s. The rhetorical meaning of the border related to values, beliefs and attitudes is understood as a border doxa that influences the social perception of borders and migrants. The works of the artists discussed in the article challenge border related narratives and question the legitimacy of borders, due to the detrimental effects they have, creating divisions between people, communities and the environment.

    Even though border scholars have for a long time reached a consensus regarding arbitrariness of borders as artificial human constructs, it seems that in the second decade of the twenty-first century “political borders separating peoples remain pervasive and problematic” (Ganster 2016, xv). Globalization and people’s flows at the beginning of the twenty-first century both opened some borders to international trade or services and at the same time turned other borders into almost completely impenetrable territories with its status reinforced by legislation and militarization, with the U.S.-Mexican border as the best example of the play between those antagonistic forces pulling together and pushing apart at the same time people and spaces on both sides of the border. As such the U.S.-Mexico border “provides a paradigmatic case of global border development” (2016, xvi) and hence the purpose of this paper is to analyze how the transformations of the concept of the border that took place at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries are reflected in American popular media on the basis of the TV series, The Bridge (2013-2014). In addition, the article will also examine the way the region is presented in the series, thus creating specific borderlands tales and contributing to the scholarship on the border.
    Pomimo tego, że badacze zajmujący się problemami granic i pogranicza już dawno doszli do wniosku, że granice są sztucznym tworem ludzkim, wydaje się, że w kolejnych dekadach XXI wieku „granice polityczne oddzielające od siebie ludzi pozostają wszechobecne i problematyczne” (Ganster 2016, xv). Globalizacja oraz przepływy ludzi na początku XXI wieku otworzyły niektóre granice, umożliwiając międzynarodowy handel lub przepływ usług. Jednocześnie zaś inne granice zamieniły się w nieprzenikalne terytoria, których status jest wciąż umacniany przez zabiegi legislacyjne oraz militaryzację. Granica meksykańsko-amerykańska jest doskonałym przykładem ścierania się tych antagonistycznych sił, które jednocześnie przyciągają do siebie i rozdzielają zarówno ludzi jak i miejsca po obydwu stronach granicy. Dlatego też celem tego artykułu jest analiza, w jaki sposób zmiany definicji granicy, które pojawiły się w literaturze przedmiotu na przełomie XX i XXI wieku są odzwierciedlane w popularnych mediach amerykańskich na przykładzie serialu The Bridge (2013-2014). Ponadto artykuł analizuje, w jaki sposób region ten jest przedstawiany w serialu i jak na podstawie tych reprezentacji powstają opowieści graniczne, które stanowią kolejny głos w dyskusji dotyczącej granic.

    The question of the U.S.–Mexico border has always been important for Latinx living in the U.S. and its versatile roles as well as its influence on border crossers and the environment have been presented by various Latinx and non-Latinx authors and artists. Their artistic productions illustrate the transformations of space into a contact zone and challenge the rationale of the wall. They vary in form from immediate responses to those interventions undertaken with the privilege of preparation, i.e. time. The purpose of this article is to examine how those post-millennial re-visions of the border re-define the conflicted and contentious space of the U.S.–Mexico border and how the time-determined form of selected examples of post-2000 border artivism influences those transformations.
    Kwestia granicy amerykańsko-meksykańskiej zawsze była ważna dla Latynosów mieszkających w USA, a jej wszechstronne role, a także wpływ na osoby przekraczające granice oraz na środowisko, są przedstawiane przez różnych autorów i artystów latynoskich i nielatynoskich. Ich artystyczne produkcje ilustrują przemiany tej przestrzeni w strefę kontaktu a tym samym kwestionują racjonalność budowanego na granicy muru. Różnią się one formą – od działań, które stanowią natychmiastową odpowiedź na pojawiający się na granicy problem po interwencje podejmowane z „przywilejem” przygotowania, tj. czasem. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zbadanie, w jaki sposób re-wizje granicy pows`tałe po roku dwutysięcznym na nowo definiują skonfliktowaną i sporną przestrzeń granicy amerykańsko-meksykańskiej oraz jak wybrane przykłady artystycznej aktywności społecznej wpływają na te przemiany.

    As the mainstream representations of the contested space of the U.S.-Mexico border often neglect to reflect the diversity of border stories and miss rhetorical dimension, the aim of this paper is to analyze Ana Teresa Fernández’s most recent act of border artivism – her performance, At the Edge of Distance (2022) and its documentation, from the visual rhetoric’s perspective. This analysis is to examine the argumentative power of images created by the artist as well as their function. The article explores versatile border stories Fernández’s paintings convey and analyzes how they function as a call for action – to challenge hostipitality Latinx experience in the U.S. and replace it with acts of transborder conviviality.
    Jako że reprezentacje nurtu głównego, które przestawiają sporną przestrzeń granicy meksykańsko-amerykańskiej często nie uwzględniają różnorodności historii granicznych oraz pomijają wymiar retoryczny, celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza z perspektywy retoryki wizualnej efektów najnowszego przykładu artystycznego aktywizmu Any Teresy Fernández – jej performansu At the Edge of Distance (2022) i jego dokumentacji. Analiza ta ma na celu zbadanie siły argumentacyjnej obrazów stworzonych przez artystkę, a także ich funkcji. Artykuł bada uniwersalne historie graniczne zawarte w obrazach Fernández i analizuje, w jaki sposób funkcjonują one jako wezwanie do działania – do zakwestionowania wrogościnności, która dotyka Latynosów mieszkających w Stanach Zjednoczonych i zastąpienia jej aktami ponadgranicznej solidarności społecznej.
