Opis:
In his Meditations, the emperor-Stoic Marcus Aurelius very often goes back to the motive of passing and transitory nature of human life. On the one hand this permanent and pessimistic motive may be interpreted as a certain kind of spiritual exercises, practised not only by Stoics. On the other hand we cannot exclude that they are a manifestation of the author’s personal views and experiences. Marcus often touched upon the topic of death, a fact that was not an expression of his fear before what was inevitable, especially that according to the Stoic doctrine death belongs to the immutable order of the world and is compatible with nature, hence it is completely acceptable. Marcus Aurelius is afraid rather of the transitory nature of the moment given to us to be used. He stresses that life “is running down” each day and at the same time he is tormented with the lack of time that must be filled with good and respectable behaviour, with life in conformity with the orders of reason, or the deity. Marcus Aurelius is not frightened by death itself, but the possibility to lose control over one’s life, loss of consciousness, and the ability to reflect (in the case of a illness or old age). He also stresses firmly the importance of favours that we may and should render to others, for despite the proper shape of one’s soul this is the goal of human life.

While speaking of the deepest experience of God, some Christian mystics mention that it takes place within the essence of the soul or within its centre, which is sometimes called spirit. Since a soul does not have parts, spirit is a counterpart of some specific „acting" of a soul which consists in passive opening towards God's action. Man experiences God in spirit. Such experience is something more than faith in God's presence within us. In spirit man feels God's presence. For Carmelite mystics, such moments are man's highest personal acts. Therefore one can say that a person fully expresses oneself just in this passive capability to open to this contact with God. Hence one can state that a person is a soul in a dimension of acting independently of the matter and in the dimension of giving oneself and receiving the other person.

Opis:
The mystery of human being as a creature of God has been explored by many generations of philosophers and theologians. This article is an attempt to analyze of the some aspects of anthropological thought of famous contemporary Greek thinker – Christos Yannaras. The starting point is a depiction of the creation of human being as an act of God. His love constitutes man as an existential event of personal communion and relationship and a partaker in the freedom of love which is true life. The second part of the article relates to the issue of God’s image in human being. The Greek Fathers interpreted the image of God in humanity trying to avoid dualistic and monistic conceptual definitions. The patristic interpretation sums up the truth of the words “in the image” in the triadic character of personal energies (mind, reason, spirit) or in the “sovereignty” and “self-‑determination” which sum up the ontological differentiation of the person with regard to nature. The distinction between the sexes, namely the differentiation of man and woman, in relation to the image of God has been examined in the third part of the article. From the biblical narrative of man’s creation follows that man should realize life as communion with the other sex and it is the way for human life to be constituted in new personal hypostases and to have dominion over the earth (Gen 1:28). The distinction of sexes does not function in man as it functions in the animals where it is exclusively subordinate to the natural necessity of propagation. The distinction of the sexes has its foundation in human nature, but it is not identical with this nature, just as it is not to be identified even with the hypostasis of man. How to understand the reality of soul from the Christian point of view? Some possible answers for this question are presented in the four part of the article. There are many meanings of the word soul in the Bible and in Christian literature. The soul it is often identified in the Old Testament with the manifestation of life on earth, while in the New Testament it appears also as a bearer of eternal life. Today what we call soul is a dynamically effected event, a complex of ceaselessly effected functions which reveal and express the living existence of man. For these functions we use various names: we speak of reason, imagination, judgment, creativity, ability to love, etc. The final part of the article shows relations between soul and body. Yannaras underlines that soul and body do not determine the mode by which the human person is, but are determined and marked as differentiations of the result of natural energy, that is of the universal-ecstatic reference of the bicomposite essence or nature. Both the body and the soul are energies of human nature. What each specific man is, this inmost I which constitutes him as an existential event, is identified neither with the body nor the soul. The distinction between soul and body refers to the semantic differentiation of the result of natural energy and does not refer to the mode by which humanity is as nature and person.

Opis:
In a succinct formula, Jn 17,19 describes the foundation of the Church as our sharing in the holiness and truth to which Jesus commits himself. To ponder the depth of this verse the article calls on René Girard’s mimetic theory and Jan Patočka’s phenomenology. The latter’s notion of ‘care of the soul’ in Socratic sense illustrates what it means to shun any distraction from commitment to the ‘wholeness of the world’, whereas Girard’s theory of the dominant mimesis shows how this openness is constantly pulled into the mechanism of scapegoating and rivalry. Together they portray the immense challenge of humanity, being called to a total truthfulness of integrity, to which the faith of Christ opens the way. For them the truth has a practical dimension: responsibility for oneself and the world (Patočka) and overcoming in oneself sacrificial logic.

Opis:
The Medieval imagery in the representations of the Genesis are profusely analysed in the literature of the subject. This is owing to the fact that the images in question cumulate a large number of interrelated religious motifs and ideas. The paramount motif is that of the Creator, whose presence was usually represented graphically by the figure of Christ with the crossnimbus. Other figures were also used as substitutes of God the Father. Figures of angels taking part in the consequent stages of creation are a frequent iconographic element, too. Irrespective of the above, the bodies and the carnality of Adam and Eve has been discussed only marginally, or completely ignored in the research on the Medieval imagery of the Genesis. Despite the common belief that Medieval art had no intense interest in the human body, the scenes depicting the creation of the human being reveal the artists' attempts to take up the theological discourse on the nature of carnality, bearing “God's image.” This paper points at a selection of patristic texts and those written by other authors who interpreted carnality in the context of the mystery of the human soul, intellect, human senses as well as the conditions relating to the sexual divide. The analysis is based on the most outstanding Medieval miniatures and reliefs that represent the relationship between the human being and the Creator in the moment of creating, first, Adam and then Eve. Special emphasis is placed on the artists' efforts to carefully represent the gestures of the Creator, which are to tell the spectator about the dignity of the human body as created by God. Also discussed are images that pinpoint the difference in the artistic positioning of the representation of God in relation to Adam and Eve. Some of the images show closeness and affinity, when God leans down towards the world in the act of creating man. In others, God sits on a globe, creating man by means of a divine gesture, but staying in a distance to His creation. A vital element in the way in which the first parents' bodies were painted was how a given artist emphasised or understated the anatomical features of Adam and Eve. Some artists even presented them as children, in an apparent need to give their own interpretation of their age. Yet another significant aspect in the analysis of how the human body was depicted is that of surroundings. The representations of the garden of Eden present nature, with special exposition of the ground on which the newly-created Adam is lying, a rock as well the trees and rivers in paradise.

The article presents insights on the nature of the Church which are to be gained from reading the autobiographical book of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, The Story of a Soul. As indicated by the title of the book, the soul is the central personal reality and agency of spiritual transaction. It is within the sphere of the soul that the person first lives the sacramentality of the Church as a source of encounter with God that opens onto the possibility of a relationship of love. Divine love in turn expands the natural capacities of the soul to encompass others, even strangers, in the life of one’s soul as a living member of the community of the Church, thus also giving them a share in the spiritual gifts of Christ mediated by the Church. Special attention is paid to the conformity of Thérèse’s experience of soul transforming divine love with that of other saints and mystics throughout history, as expressed by the metaphor of iron and fire.

The content of the last meeting of Hryhoriy Skovoroda with his pupil and his close friend Michael Kovalinskiy is discussed in the above article. A teacher discusses his vision of the essence of immortality. He appealed to prophet Ezekiel, who prophesied to the spirit, as he entered the spirit in the resurrection of the body, as they stood, the whole multitude, full of strength. So the Lord put into them the spirit and put them on the ground. And the prophet Isaiah told of chilled, like grass, bones, of the alive dead, of the uprising of dead bodies. The teacher says when man began his own law, he appreciated the desire to do good simply because of the good, then he is not bound by duty to follow the strict influence of "the stars", he is freed from the influence, which is called fate. Then the man voluntarily obeys the laws, which he knows and understands, he consciously works on the influences that have come to be known as a perfect means to achieve perfection. Skovoroda prophesies that in the future of mankind materialistic knowledge, knowledge about the superiority of the solid, the car will take place in almost all the spiritual life of people.

The author of the paper proposes that the basic element of the reception of German philosopher’s thought in the works of the genius Pole is ‘the Dionysus’ from Nietzsche’s early writings understood as a universal cosmic force connected with sexual desire, and not a voluntary concept of ‘the overman’.

The article “The Origins of the Human Life in Patristic Comments” tries to show the richness of thoughts and ideas presented by various writers in the early times of Christianity. Their views dealt with the prenatal stadium of a human being. Among main matters concerning the beginning of the human life analyzed by first Christian writers were: time of animation (the moment of union of the body and soul), abortion, the status of the human embryo, pre-existence of the soul referring to the belief that each individual human soul exists before conception, the origin of the soul. Among these issues, very present and lively discussed in the communities of early Christians, we can also find the reflection concerning the embryonic stages of Christ’s life.

The man in the vision of St. John of the Cross is seen as a psychosomatic unity as well as diversity. Author subjected to a detailed analysis of the two spheres of human life: physical and spiritual. The aim of this paper is to present metaphilosophical issues in Boethius’s De consolatione. His work takes up and continues the discussion of some ways of understanding philosophy and dimensions of philosophy, the sources of which are in the ancient tradition. In this paper I am going to point out that for Boethius philosophy is an art and a way of life. Having made this assumption, two other aspects of philosophy can be considered – the “tragic” and the “therapeutic” ones. While philosophical therapy has been frequently discussed by scholars as a dimension of Boethius’s “love of wisdom”, the “tragic” and “the way of life” aspects have not been rightly appreciated in their unity. The close relationship of these ways of understanding philosophy is evidenced by the fact, that their presentation in Boethius’s work takes the form of the sequence of events. At first we can see philosophy as a way of life, next there is a tragic end, and finally we can see philosophical therapy as a reaction to the tragedy. This paper aims at resolving the problem of philosophical ethos which combines the multidimensional approach to philosophy and makes the drama of “the way of life” so closely linked to the need of consolation.

The metaphysical idea of “nature” is one of these tuning ideas of the philosopher of the Enlightenment, Rousseau. On one side, we see the romantic and wild picture of nature, like “the ocean, the mountains, the rocks, the waterfalls”, on the other side there is nature tamed by the humans. The mountain’s soul looked like phenomenon of unexpected (something which surpasses the expectations and reveal the dramatized, restless nature), is something which escapes its being (in the metaphysical sense) and which confronts this soul in a kind of terror. Also we underline that the sublime of the mountain provokes some sort of terror. The push of Rousseau’s thought shows nature as an association with the state of the soul within an internal experience. We can conclude that the “polarity of the subjective – (emotional) inner and of the objective external (the natural world)” opens the possibility to question this dispute.
