Opis:
Sword is one of the most important identifiers of elite character of the burial in the Przeworsk Culture. The way of wearing double-edged sword is determined by scabbard slide and strap that passes through the slide. The side on which the sword was worn is also incontrovertible. More complicated dilemma can be observed while working on the interpretation of one-edged swords and their suspension system. In some cases there are preserved scabbard clasps and mounts still attached to the blade. This could happen when grave inventory was burnt together with sword hidden in its carrying case. By analysing the placement of the suspension rings with attached strap, we can get answers to such questions as: which side of the body was worn particular sword, what was its inclination towards the body and how high it was suspended. The sole interpretation of research results could give us incomplete view of the past. Running some tests with reconstructed artefacts could significantly influence and change final conclusions regarding analysed archaeological material.

Opis:
The article presents the results of archaeological field survey carried out by the Archaeological – Conservator’s Studio Alina Jaszewska on site 20 in Bnin in 2013. In the area with the width of 65 m, length: 75 m 60 features were uncovered related to population settlement of the Lusatian Culture (45), the Przeworsk culture (5) and from the early Middle Ages (10) and the modern times (2). The oldest phase of inhabiting this land alls in the Neolithic period, which links only single pieces of ceramics. The next, dated to the 5th EB and HaC, contains most numerous features forming a compact utility zone of the settlement and a set of 342 fragments of dishes. Late Roman period is the period of the residential feature and several utility buildings open in dispersion and 104 pieces of dishes. With regard to the early Middle Ages two phases are distinguished: older, connecting at least 5 features in a period from the 2nd half of the 7th –1 half of the 8th century, earlier to the 2nd half of the 8th century and 1st half of the 9th century. Dating an early medieval settlement uses the 14C analysis.

Eastern Zone of the Przeworsk culture
Roman Period
cemeteries
brooches
weapon graves
Opis:
In phase B1, and very prominently – in phase B2 of the Roman Period, tribal groups of the north-eastern territories of the Przeworsk culture displayed a number of characteristic regional elements. These elements are mostly seen in female outfits that become much richer and more varied than elsewhere within the Przeworsk culture territory. The features specific for the Eastern Przeworsk Zone, like e.g., a very high frequency of dress elements made of copper alloys, would be largely the effect of mutual relations of these people with communities of the Wielbark culture from Eastern Pomerania. Though outwardly only ethnographic, this specificity of the material culture may have deeper underlying causes, since starting with phase B1, there is evidence of two basic types of Eastern Przeworsk cemeteries. In both cases, the women’s grave furnishings display general Eastern Przeworsk characteristics. In cemeteries of the first group weapon graves disappear already in early phase B1. These cemeteries fell out of use before the end of phase B2 and reflect the full, or nearly full withdrawal of the ‘Przeworsk’ community from that area. The second group form Przeworsk cemeteries with ‘standard’ weapon graves. From phase B2/C1 on, the Wielbark culture newcomers continued to use many of these cemeteries. Many of them were then continuously used from phase B2/C1 by the Wielbark culture newcomers. It appears that a part of the Przeworsk population from the Eastern Zone probably joined Gothic (Wielbark) tribes then moving south. Recently many brooches recognized traditionally as definitely ethnographic markers of the Przeworsk culture (types Almgren 43 and Almgren 129) have been registered in the western provinces of nowadays Ukraine. However, these finds are already much more numerous than those from the ‘core’ territory of the Przeworsk culture – for the time being, this phenomenon seems to be inexplicable.

Opis:
The skeletal graves from Czeladź in Górowo county represent an interesting element of the burial rites in the late stage of the Przeworsk culture. One of the graves was equipped with ceramic utensils (both hand-formed and thrown on a potter’s wheel) as well as clips with bevelled hoops, which were probably analogous to artefacts discovered in other archaeological sites in Lower Silesia. Two of the graves contained no equipment typical of other Lower Silesian burials in the late Przeworsk culture. Perhaps the habit of not equipping the dead with any items should be attributed to the specific posthumous garment or shroud worn. The stones found in the graves were probably inspired by the Wielbark culture or the Scandinavians.

Opis:
From the accidently discovered “grave I” from Łęg Piekarski (Turek County, Poland) comes a unique bronze bowl with a perforated wall and an enamelled, zoomorphic spout, which finds analogies among the Late Celtic vessels from the British Isles. A re-analysis, which took into account the increase in the reference material, made it possible to present a new interpretation of this unusual find, both in regard to its form and supposed use. The strainer and spout suggest that the vessel might have been used to prepare herbal infusions. We do not know if it was used in this manner in the territory of the Przeworsk Culture.

Three years ago, with the knowledge and support of the restoration services of the Museum of the First Piasts at Lednica, together with the Wielkopolska Exploratory and Historical Group ‘GNIAZDO’ Association, surface penetration of the areas located around Lake Lednica began, within the Lednica project. So far, the research conducted with the use of the latest remote sensing and measurement techniques has yielded numerous finds of metal relics, with a chronology spanning from the Bronze Age to the present day. The finds include twenty four fibulae from the period of Roman influence. Their formal analysis is the subject of this article.

Opis:
The artefacts described in the paper come from the Przeworsk culture settlement in Kwiatków, where more than 100 fibulae were discovered. Among the artefacts acquired were three knee-shaped brooches with a semi-circular shield on the head. One of them was discovered in a well; the other two came from the surface of the site. This paper is mostly concerned with issues related to the technological aspects of the production of these items. In addition to the analysis of traces of craftsmanship found on the fibulae, XRF tests were performed to determine the material from which they were made. This approach allows one to supplement the typological findings and reconstruct the process of creating a given object. The brooches were microscopically examined for traces of craftsmanship. The attempt to determine the foundry method which had been applied failed to produce the expected results. Usually, individual instances of knee-shaped fibulae have been recorded at sites in Poland and other countries, such as the Czech Republic. In Kwiatków, however, the discovery contained as many as three such artefacts, though they had not been made in a workshop of one craftsman, although two display a high level of similarity.

Opis:
Archaeological finds document Przeworsk culture peoples' migration towards the southeast in phases B2 of early Roman Period and C1a of younger Roman Period. Finds of graves, mostly with grave goods typical of male burials are known from this period in the territories of eastern Slovakia, Transcarpathian Ukraine, north-east Hungary, and north-west Romania. We can correlate this migration with the historically documented expansion of Vandals in the direction of Dacia. Chair of Iron Age Archaeology of Institute of Archaeology of Jagiellonian University has led a series of excavations on the sites in the region of Sanok, both on the settlements (Pakoszówka, site 1, site 26, Sanok 54) and cemeteries (Prusiek, site 25, Pakoszówka, site 33). The concentration of settlements from the Roman period in the region of Sanok can be treated as a link etween the sites of Przeworsk culture in the San River middle catchment basin and from the Tisa River catchment basin. The presence of Przeworsk culture in the Carpathian Basin in the younger and late Roman Period is not evident. We can, therefore, conclude, that they have assimilated – after a phase of migration, they have entered a phase of stability.
