    The Bolshevik offensive against Poland during the years 1919–1920 forced landowners who had lived in the Eastern Borderlands for generations to escape hastily from their estates. The formation of the Polish border in the east after the treaty of Riga made it impossible for most of them to return to their family lands. The refugees from the Eastern Borderlands were not only deprived of their houses and land, but also financial resources. They arrived in large numbers in the major cities where they tried to find work and some financial means of survival. Other landowners purchased small farms in the new Rzeczpospolita. The most attractive were farms in Pomerania abandoned by the Germans. Immigrants from the Eastern Borderlands found it hard to adapt to new conditions of life and work. Demoted socially, they indulged in nostalgia for the past and longing for their lost motherland. They felt insulted by the Polish government, misunderstood and alienated. It was frequently difficult for them to renounce their old habits in administering their estates, which meant that they often failed to succeed in the changed economic circumstances and on a much smaller area of land. Younger landowners exhibited a greater mobility and found it easier to find work. They did not feel attached to the Pomeranian land and found it easier to make the decision to leave the region.

    Cinematographic shows were held in Pomerelia several months after the invention of the Lumiere brothers had been presented for the first time in Paris. At the beginning of the 20th century such shows, originally organised as touring forms of entertainment, were very popular both in the major and smaller towns of the region. The fascination with the new medium affected the whole population irrespective of the ethnic origin of the inhabitants of the region. WW I resulted in an increased ideologisation of cinematography; the forms of state control over the content of films became stricter. In the interwar period, cinematography became an element of cultural competition between Poland and Germany. The prevalence and popularity of film along with the influx of American images influenced the morality and mentality of people living in the Pomeranian voiodeship in the interwar period.

    Problematyka demograficznego kurczenia się miast pojawiła się w literaturze polskiej na przełomie XX/XXI w. i stała się niezwykle ważnym problemem badawczym, bowiem proces shrinking cities ma wpływ na przekształcenia społeczne, gospodarcze i przestrzenne wraz z ochroną środowiska w miastach. Celem niniejszego opracowania jest przedstawienie uwarunkowań demograficznych i wskazanie na wybranych przykładach konsekwencji społecznych kurczenia się miast w województwie zachodniopomorskim, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem starzenia się demograficznego, opieki nad osobami starszymi, wyzwań dla systemu edukacji oraz zagadnień dotyczących mieszkalnictwa. Do zebrania materiału faktograficznego wykorzystano metodę analizy danych zastanych (desk reserach), którą zastosowano w odniesieniu do danych statystycznych. Materiał statystyczny pochodził z oficjalnych baz statystyki publicznej, tj. Banku Danych Lokalnych oraz bazy Demografia, a także Oddziału Rodziny i Pomocy Społecznej Zachodniopomorskiego Urzędu Wojewódzkiego. Wykorzystano również metody niereaktywne, dokonując analizy dokumentów i raportów. Z kolei na podstawie kwerendy bibliotecznej dokonano przeglądu literatury w kontekście prowadzonych badań. Przeprowadzone badania jednoznacznie wskazują, że rozpatrywane narastające problemy społeczne w miastach woj. zachodniopomorskiego mają uwarunkowania demograficzne. Spadek zaludnienia miast to efekt ubytku naturalnego ludności oraz rosnącego ujemnego przyrostu migracyjnego. W konsekwencji zdecydowana większość miast reprezentuje regresywny typ ludności, z utrzymującą się tendencją spadkową mieszkańców do 2050 r. Przyczyn depopulacji miast województwa zachodniopomorskiego należy dopatrywać się w zmianach stylu życia ludzi młodych, a przede wszystkim zachowawczych postawach prokreacyjnych, a ponadto w rosnącym odpływie ludności z miast na obszary podmiejskie oraz zagranicznej migracji zarobkowej. Demograficzne kurczenie się miast znalazło odzwierciedlenie w obszarze konsekwencji społecznych. Depopulacja miast prowadzi do starzenia się demograficznego mieszkańców, co wiąże się z koniecznością zapewnienia opieki nad osobami starszymi. Jak wynika z badań, coraz większe zainteresowania pozostaje zinstytucjonalizowanymi formami działalności, o czym świadczy rosnąca liczba domów pomocy społecznej, a także liczba osób starszych objętych usługami opiekuńczymi. Inną ważną konsekwencją kurczenia się demograficznego miast województwa zachodniopomorskiego pozostaje problem szkolnictwa. Malejąca liczba dzieci i młodzieży staje się wyzwaniem dla władz samorządowych, które ze względu na rosnące koszty utrzymania szkół muszą podejmować decyzje o ograniczeniu liczby placówek oświatowych. Niezmiernie ważnym ze społecznego punktu widzenia jest posiadanie własnego mieszkania. Niestety, nawet w kurczących się demograficznie miastach zachodniopomorskich utrzymuje się deficyt mieszkań, chociaż liczba nowo oddanych budynków i mieszkań wykazuje tendencje wzrostowe oraz wzrasta liczba mieszkań niezamieszkanych. Reasumując, współczesne przemiany demograficzne w miastach zachodniopomorskich wskazują na procesy kurczenia się demograficznego miast, co z pewnością przyczyni się do nawarstwienia konsekwencji społecznych. Miasta więc w obliczu współczesnej rzeczywistości powinny rozważyć przygotowanie nowych dokumentów strategicznych i planistycznych z nową wizją rozwoju miast.
    The issue of the demographic shrinking of cities appeared in Polish literature at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries and has become an extremely important research problem, since the process of shrinking cities affects social, economic and spatial transformations along with the environmental protection offered by cities. The aim of this study is to present demographic conditions and indicate, using selected examples, the social consequences of the shrinking of cities in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship, with particular emphasis on demographic aging, care for the elderly, challenges for the education system and housing issues. To collect factual material, the desk research method was used, and applied to statistical data. The statistical material came from official public statistics databases, i.e. the Local Data Bank and the Dermographia database, as well as the Family and Social Welfare Branch of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship Office. Non-reactive methods were also used to analyze documents and reports, while, based on a library query, a literature review was carried out in the context of the research. The research clearly shows that the growing social problems in the cities of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship have demographic conditions. The decline in the urban population is the result of a natural decline in population and the growing negative migration rate. As a consequence, the vast majority of cities represent a regressive type of population, with a downward trend of inhabitants continuing until 2050. The causes behind the depopulation of cities in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship can be traced to changes in the lifestyle of young people and, above all, conservative reproductive attitudes, as well as the growing outflow of people from cities to suburban areas and foreign economic migration. The demographic shrinking of cities was reflected in the area of social consequences. The depopulation of cities leads to the demographic aging of residents, which is associated with the need to provide care for the elderly. As the research shows, there is an increasing interest in the institutionalized forms of activity, as evidenced by the growing number of social welfare homes and the number of elderly people covered by care services. Another important consequence of the demographic shrinking of the regional cities is the problem of education in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. The decreasing number of children and young people is becoming a challenge for local authorities, which, due to the rising costs of maintaining schools, must decide to limit the number of educational institutions. Having your own apartment is extremely important from a social point of view, but unfortunately, even in the demographically shrinking West Pomeranian cities, there is still a housing deficit, even though the number of newly completed buildings and apartments shows upward trends and the number of uninhabited apartments is increasing.  To sum up, contemporary demographic changes in West Pomeranian cities indicate the processes of demographic shrinkage of cities, which will certainly contribute to the accumulation of social consequences. Cities, in the face of contemporary reality, face the challenge of preparing new strategic and planning documents with a new vision of city development.

    Opis:
    Public space is a special place especially in rural areas because it has a key social significance (integration place of residents) and spatial. It determines the quality of life, competitiveness and attractiveness of the region – tourism, settlement and investment. In the article, on the example of the competition “The Best Public Space of the Pomeranian Voivodeship”, the problem of shaping public space in rural areas were presented. The competition has been organized uninterruptedly since 2006. The aim of this competiton is public assets of the Pomeranian region promotion and to honor the municipalities in which the best undertakings related to its development were implemented. Projects presenting high quality solutions adapted to the nature of the surroundings are awarded. This study presents the awarded and won projects in the competition of rural public spaces in the Pomeranian region.
    W niniejszej pracy poruszono zagadnienie wiejskich przestrzeni publicznych. Podjęto próbę ich zdefiniowania, wykazania ich specyfiki i charakteru oraz roli, jaką odgrywają one w życiu mieszkańców wsi. Podjętą problematykę badawczą zaprezentowano na przykładzie konkursu „Najlepsza Przestrzeń Publiczna Województwa Pomorskiego”. Konkurs organizowany jest nieprzerwanie od 2006 roku, a jego celem jest promocja walorów ogólnodostępnych przestrzeni regionu pomorskiego oraz uhonorowanie gmin, na terenie których zrealizowane zostały najlepsze, zdaniem komisji konkursowej, przedsięwzięcia związane z jej kształtowaniem. Nagradzane są projekty prezentujące wysokiej jakości rozwiązania, dostosowane do charakteru otoczenia. W niniejszym opracowaniu analizie poddano nagrodzone (wyróżnione) w konkursie projekty zagospodarowania wiejskich przestrzeni publicznych regionu pomorskiego. Przestrzeń publiczna jest miejscem szczególnym, zwłaszcza na terenach wiejskich, gdyż posiada kluczowe znaczenie społeczne (miejsce integracji mieszkańców) i przestrzenne (dominanta funkcjonalna i kompozycyjna). Decyduje o jakości życia, konkurencyjności i atrakcyjności regionu – turystycznej, osiedleńczej i inwestycyjnej.
