Celem artykułu jest charakterystyka wybranych powieści Wandy Karczewskiej. Analiza niektórych aspektów twórczości pisarki, w szczególności zaś wykorzystywanych przez nią technik narracyjnych, będzie służyła usytuowaniu jej dokonań literackich w kontekście poetyk nowej powieści francuskiej – ówczesnego ruchu awangardowego, który miał niebagatelny wpływ na rozwój nowoczesnej prozy, w tym również powieści postmodernistycznej. Tekst ten jest także próbą zaprezentowania walorów powieściopisarstwa zapomnianej dziś kaliskiej autorki.
The aim of this essay is to discuss selected novels of Wanda Karczewska. The analysis includes only specific aspects of Karczewska’s writing, such as narrative techniques, and its major aim is to situate her literary works in the context of the New Novel, a French literary movement which had a significant influence on the development of modern prose, including the postmodern novel. The second, equally important, aim of this text is to present some of the virtues of Karczewska’s forgotten novels to a wider audience.

The article discusses the concept of race, which was used in the Polish novel in the years 1870–1930. At that time, the concept became very popular in the language of the intelligentsia. The analysis showed the existence of three types of categorization of race: a) ethnic (it included the semantics of the past, space, tribalism, heredity; it positively valorized OUR MEN and negatively STRANGERS), b) socio-cultural (categories of heredity, family, kinship, sphere, custom, tradition, it was responsible for solidifying SOCIAL HIERARCHY), c) aesthetic (the category of race in the character description concerned the face, arms and legs; the racial parts of the body positively valorized the character; aestheticism was based on frequent comparisons to the sculpture, the ideal of BEAUTY became the Hellenic type.

The article is dedicated to the study of the religious problems of Vs. S. Solovyov’s historical novel “The Princess of Ostrog”, the central plot conflict of which is an open struggle between the Orthodoxy and the Catholicism that broke out in the 16th century in The Polish- Lithuanian Commonwealth. In the process of analysing the designated aspect of the text the author comes to the conclusion that the images of Konstantin, Halshka and Beata Ostrozhsky considered in the paper are a clear embodiment of the three possible life aspirations of the people who lived in the era recreated by the author: the struggle for the Orthodoxy in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania; asserting one’s right to profess the Orthodoxy; propaganda of the Catholicism.

This article explores the darkened and rarely visited zones of Maria Dąbrowska’s Noce i dnie [Nights and Days] (1932–1934), a tetralogy of novels usually read as a realist family saga. In its broad panorama children and childhood have a very important place, yet what seems to have largely been ignored is the enigmatic nature of childhood and child's role as a locus of mystery. With the help of tropes of the folk imaginarium (primarily the iconic Grimms’ Fairy Tales), and conceptual tools borrowed from Sigmund Freud, Bruno Bettelheim, Jacques Lacan and Julia Kristeva, the article analyzes Dąbrowska’s multi‑layered and elusive characters, caught up in an endless strife trying in vain to tame the chaos within themselves and to get to grips with the threatening uncanniness of the world outside.

The article examines three post-1956 novels ostensibly about the Spanish Inquisition’s activities in Spain at the end of the fifteenth century: Jerzy Andrzejewski’s Ciemności kryją ziemię (The Inquisitors, 1957), Julian Stryjkowski’s Przybysz z Narbony (1978), and Jozef Cepik’s Torquemada (1986). These works are placed in a number of broader contexts: the uses of the historical novel in Poland; post-war Polish censorship discourse about the use of historical analogy to address current social and political problems, a practice which the political authorities sought to restrict; the contemporary critical reception where reviews of each novel are seen as articulating the novels’ fundamental concerns albeit subject to the same censorship restrictions; and ultimately the longestablished tradition of Aesopian writing within Polish literature. The analysis demonstrates the expansion of the space for critical public expression particularly in the Thaw years of 1956-57, and its contraction over time up to the mid-1970s. The rise of an independent publishing network at that point paradoxically both facilitates a more open discussion of the potential meanings of literary texts but equally has to observe censorship proprieties to avoid exposing officially published authors to political sanctions. With the growth of underground publishing, the Spanish Inquisition theme gradually declines in relevance, reflected by the critical marginalisation of Cepik’s novel. Ultimately, the article positions the trend within Macherey’s theory of significant silences within literary works, which permits a refinement of the historically contingent screen and marker that have typically defined Aesopian works. The article presents, with their English translations, hitherto unpublished documents from the Polish Party and Censorship archives, including examples of work confiscated by the censors.

The article discusses the type of Polish novel, written at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, in which the action takes place in health resorts. Affairs and adultery are among frequent themes in these novels. The subculture of health resorts is a dialectics of 1)the idea of freedom and biological motivation in people’s decisions, and 2) social norms. Health resorts create an illusion of the beauty of the world and pure feelings. Dreams about a better world are based on the beauty of nature, as well as one’s connection with poetry. The analysis of the novels proves that affairs and adultery in health resorts function as a distorting mirror which shows ugliness and immorality of the characters’ lives in their family relationships. Health resort is often imagined as Eden which is able to re-create the history of mankind. The utopia of platonic love in health resort proves the crisis of culture and the institution of marriage.

This article combines a general introduction to the crime fi ction of Walery Przyborowski with a study of the structure of the plot of his novels. The analyses of ten of his novels conclude with a typology of their narrative schemes, shown in the context of certain invariant patterns and the conventions of related literary genres. While the main objective of this study is to outline the structure of crime story and the social issues depicted in Przyborowski’s crime fi ction, it also pays some attention to the ways in which it refl ects his concerns about contemporary life and the condition of Poland under foreign rule. Basically, Przyborowski’s formula is to make use of the staples of the genre – mystery, adventure, romance – and the techniques of the popular novel. Moreover, his novels, like all of the 19th-century crime fi ctions, are clearly indebted to the conventions of the historical novel.

Czarny Paryż [The Back Paris] is a crime novel written by Jolanta Fuchsówna, journalist and writer, and Jan Brzękowski, leading poet of the Cracow Avant-garde who lived in Paris, and serialized in the Cracow daily Ilustrowany Kurier Codzienny in 1932, but not published as a book.In this article two typescripts of the novel are analyzed and compared with the printed text, taking note of all the corrections and amendments introduced by the authors. An integral supplement to this textual study is an extract from Chapter XIII ‘A Party in the Studio of the Japanese Man’ reproduced in two versions, 1) with footnotes and modernized spelling, and 2) the original text from the typescript with all annotations.

This article, focused principally on the exploration of contingency, the body and disgust in Michał Witkowski’s novel Margot, is also a polemic and a vindication of the book against the barrage of criticism it received from its reviewers. Most of them decided that Margot was a novel about nothing, a haphazard mix of sundry discourses devoid of any linear structure. In fact, several critics blamed the author of giving away both the narrative structure and the plot to capricious contingency. The article takes a fi rm stance against such charges and argues that contingency does not need to be seen as a fault at all. It lies at the heart of the novel and determines the actions of characters, but it plays as important a role in people’s lives outside fi ction. Analysing the ups and down of the main characters (Margot and Wadek Mandarynka), the article explains the function of emotions, the body, the characters’ language and their ideas of sacrum in the legitimization of contingency. A special role in this mechanism is played by disgust. Reactions of disgust are always contingent, or, as Julia Kristeva puts it the abject has the power to terrorize the subject to such extent that he can do nothing but to succumb to contingency. In working out the idea of the contingency of selfhood, the article also draws on Richard Rorty’s approach, and in particular his concept of ironism. The latter is used to classify the main character of Witkowski’s book as a consummate ironist, i.e. a person who tests different languages in which the world can be described in order to pursue his carnal desires. Finally, the article argues that in his novel Witkowski not only brings to light the fortuitous character of the postmodern identity but also creates a heterogeneous language to express it.

Jalu Kurek, a prominent member of the Cracow avant-garde, is the author of several novels. This article discusses the undeservedly neglected S.O.S., published in 1927, and suggests that its weird plotting and literary mockery is in fact an apocalyptic narrative. It has a place, it is argued, in the 'catastrophist' trends which were on the rise in the Polish literature of the late 1920s and 1930s. It should be read in the context of a growing sense of decline and crisis of European society, which, on the one hand, drew on the cultural pessimism of the turn of the 19th century, and, on the other hand, was a reaction against the wave of modernization that was sweeping the world. As this analysis shows, Jalu Kurek's S.O.S. is deeply ambivalent about the onslaught of modernity.

In the article I have analysed the concept of improvisation recorded in Jedyne wyjście by Witkacy. He described the notion as unconstrained variation-based creation flowing from an inspired vision. Witkacy considered vision as the most fundamental source element of artistic theory and creative practice. I have also analysed the traces of improvisation in the manuscript of Jedyne wyjście and I have discussed the play between amplifications and visions recorded in the improvised fragments.
W artykule analizuję koncepcję improwizacji zapisaną w Jedynym wyjściu Witkacego. Pojęcie improwizacji charakteryzuje autor powieści jako swobodne wariacyjne tworzenie wywodzące się z natchnionej wizji. Wizję uważa Witkacy za najważniejszy, źródłowy element teorii artystycznej i praktyki twórczej. Analizuję również ślady improwizacji w rękopisie Jedynego wyjścia i opisuję grę między amplifikcjami a wizjami zapisanymi w improwizowanych fragmentach.

Artykuł koncentruje się na Ernestynie Śniadowiczównie, bohaterce powieści Zofii Nałkowskiej Węże i róże (1913). Głównym celem pracy jest wykazanie, że jej postać miała swój rzeczywisty odpowiednik w osobie młodszej siostry pisarki, rzeźbiarce Hannie Nałkowskiej. Decydującym impulsem do postawienia takiej tezy stały się słowa samej autorki, która w swoich Dziennikach wyznała, że wszystkie jej powieści są w pewnym stopniu autobiograficzne. Mimo to żaden z badaczy nie zwrócił dotychczas uwagi na istotne podobieństwa między Ernestyną i Hanną Nałkowską. Węże i róże to jedyny utwór w dorobku pisarki, w którym podjęła zagadnienia związane ze sztuką i nakreśliła figurę artystki. Moment powstania powieści zbiegł się z czasem, kiedy rzeźbiarka właśnie wkraczała w świat sztuki. Zestawienie rysów sylwetki Śniadowiczówny z biografią Hanny Nałkowskiej, a także wiadomościami pochodzącymi z Dzienników jej siostry oraz wspomnieniami wspólnych przyjaciół wykaże, jak wiele wspólnego miała literacka kreacja z autentyczną postacią.
The article focuses on Ernestyna Śniadowiczówna, the main character in a novel by Zofia Nałkowska Snakes and Roses (1913). The main purpose of the work is to show that the character had its real counterpart in Zofia’s younger sister, the sculptor Hanna Nałkowska. The words of Zofia herself were crucial, who in her Diary confessed that all her novels were autobiographical to some extent.Still, researchers have not paid sufficient attention to the significant similarities between Ernestyna and Hanna Nałkowska. Snakes and Roses are the only piece in the writer’s work, in which she analyzed the issues related to art and pointed out some characteristics of the artist. Zofia was writing her novel when Hanna was entering the world of art. A comparison between Ernestyna Śniadowiczówna and Hanna Nałkowska, as well as the information from Zofia’s Diary and reminiscences of their friends show that the literary character is likely to be based on a real person.

The study assesses the changing nature of the Polish art in the period of liberalization after Stalin’s death.
