Opis:: The gloss concerns the issue of the degree of social harmfulness of acts consist- ing in placing indecent words in a public place (Article 141 of the Code on Petty Offences). It should be emphasised that not every behaviour that fulfils the statu- tory features of that petty offence should result in criminal liability, due to the possible lack of social justification for a criminal response. At the same time, it is reasonable to retain the ban on this kind of acts in the Polish legal system, because public morality and the purity of the Polish language are legal values worthy of criminal protection.

Opis:: The paper examines the way and the extent to which language policies have affected the development of the Polish language especially in recent times, since the so-called end of the communist era. The discussion revolves round the Polish Language Act of 1999 which set the rules appropriate to ‘protecting’ Polish from ‘foreign influences’ (English in particular). Subject to examination is the Act’s origins, the government’s motives for it, as well as amendments the Act has undergone since it was first promulgated in 1999 and the justifications for them. Finally, the paper addresses various practical implications stemming from the Act and manifested in a number of more or less spectacular actions taken by the competent bodies and authorities in order to protect the Polish language.

Opis:: The article presents the use of a simple genre of advice in a teaching project from the nineteenth century. The publication which is the subject of the analysis is by Julius Jedliński, and refers to the Polish national school called L’École polonaise des Batignolles in Paris. This document certifies that emigres discussed the value of the Polish language as a determinant of Polish identity. Effective ways of teaching the children of immigrants Polish language and culture were sought. The author of the publication presented the concept of changes in the school curriculum. As a means of persuasion he primarily used advice. The reception of the proposal by Jedliński was not favourable. The analysis of responses reveals transformations in the basic block of communicative intentions of the advice, which is interpreted as an order, complaint, or even a threat. On this basis, the attention is drawn to the importance of the communicative context in the interpretation of advice. As a result of the public nature of an act of speech and the extension of the audience while maintaining the desired recipient, the decisiveness of any advice is increased and a modification of a simple genre takes place.
