Denominational policies in the USSR that defined the state's attitude towards religion and denominational organizations, was regulated by decrees and constitutional laws. From the very beginning legal acts evolved towards making the anti-religious laws more rigorous. They were concerned with limiting the rights of people and institutions. The State established several offices to implement such policies – beginning from the central level where the policies were created: the Council for the Orthodox Church and the Council for Religious Denominations, through the office of the Plenipotentiary for Religions in particular republics and districts where the policies were coordinated, down to particular areas and villages where Cooperation Commissions applied the laws in practice. Each religious event focused the authorities' attention, making all the institutions that were supposed to oppose them ready to act – and that concerned the press, the radio, Culture Departments, Cooperation Commissions. The Commissions were not only established in each area but in each village. Practically all the people who showed any interest in religious matters were controlled. Employees of the Party and Comsomol organizations, of education, health and culture departments, of the taxation authorities, as well as retired people etc., were made members of the commissions. Each member was delegated to supervise one of the existing religious organizations. The work of the cooperation commissions was consulted with the scientific-atheist sections of the Society for the Propagation of Sciences and Lay Culture. All the Church's faults were publicized in the local and district press in order to make believers break with religion. Moreover, in districts, towns and villages commissions were established that propagated introduction of lay ceremonials into everyday life.

This paper analyzes the types of relationships which have been established between the Orthodox Romanian Church and the state starting with the 1866 Constitution. It critically assesses the theoretical model proposed by Pedro Ramet (1987) and reorganizes it applying its basic principles and its structure to the Romanian case study. Taking into consideration the various elements of the model, the study concludes that currently in spite of a delimitation of the religious sphere from the political one, in practice in post-communist Romania the connection between Church and state is much more blurred.

The Orthodox Church in the Ostrołęka administrative district in relation to therestorian of the Polish Republic after World War I. The woeks refers to the position of the Orthodox Church in the Ostrołęka administrative district before the outbreak of World War I and just after the regaining of independence by Poland in 1918. It refers both to the situaton of the Orthodox population (their numbers, legal and professional status, the condition of education) in this area, as well as to the history of five Orthodox Churses – four in the town of Ostrołęka and one in Myszuniec. The main problem, which the author has focused his attention on, is showing how certain political events (war in the case) diametrically change the situation of religious communities.

Opis:
The Orthodox Church from the very beginning of the Ecumenical Movement has been engaged into the healing of all sort of divisions and dissection. Many of the dissections divide Christians until today. In all the theological discussions Orthodox theologians emphasize that the Church is not simply an institution, but a mode of existence. The mystery of the Church even in its institutional dimension, is deeply bound to the being of man, to the being of the world and to the very being of God. The Church is also inseparable of its tradition and it cannot solve its present problems without constant referring to the decisive and formative centuries of the first millennium of Christianity. Therefore the contemporary involvement of the Orthodox Church into the Ecumenical Movement comes out from very nature of the ecclesial identity. Ecumenical activities of the Orthodox Church constitute the fulfillment of the wish of our Lord that all may be one.

Opis:
The mystery of human being as a creature of God has been explored by many generations of philosophers and theologians. This article is an attempt to analyze of the some aspects of anthropological thought of famous contemporary Greek thinker – Christos Yannaras. The starting point is a depiction of the creation of human being as an act of God. His love constitutes man as an existential event of personal communion and relationship and a partaker in the freedom of love which is true life. The second part of the article relates to the issue of God’s image in human being. The Greek Fathers interpreted the image of God in humanity trying to avoid dualistic and monistic conceptual definitions. The patristic interpretation sums up the truth of the words “in the image” in the triadic character of personal energies (mind, reason, spirit) or in the “sovereignty” and “self-‑determination” which sum up the ontological differentiation of the person with regard to nature. The distinction between the sexes, namely the differentiation of man and woman, in relation to the image of God has been examined in the third part of the article. From the biblical narrative of man’s creation follows that man should realize life as communion with the other sex and it is the way for human life to be constituted in new personal hypostases and to have dominion over the earth (Gen 1:28). The distinction of sexes does not function in man as it functions in the animals where it is exclusively subordinate to the natural necessity of propagation. The distinction of the sexes has its foundation in human nature, but it is not identical with this nature, just as it is not to be identified even with the hypostasis of man. How to understand the reality of soul from the Christian point of view? Some possible answers for this question are presented in the four part of the article. There are many meanings of the word soul in the Bible and in Christian literature. The soul it is often identified in the Old Testament with the manifestation of life on earth, while in the New Testament it appears also as a bearer of eternal life. Today what we call soul is a dynamically effected event, a complex of ceaselessly effected functions which reveal and express the living existence of man. For these functions we use various names: we speak of reason, imagination, judgment, creativity, ability to love, etc. The final part of the article shows relations between soul and body. Yannaras underlines that soul and body do not determine the mode by which the human person is, but are determined and marked as differentiations of the result of natural energy, that is of the universal-ecstatic reference of the bicomposite essence or nature. Both the body and the soul are energies of human nature. What each specific man is, this inmost I which constitutes him as an existential event, is identified neither with the body nor the soul. The distinction between soul and body refers to the semantic differentiation of the result of natural energy and does not refer to the mode by which humanity is as nature and person.

Opis:
This article is an attempt to analyse the Orthodox monastic tradition of contemplative (hesychastic) prayer, the goal of which was to achieve an ecstatic unification with God and the divinisation (theosis) of human nature. Until the 11th century the practice of this kind of prayer was passed on orally, preserving the spiritual father-disciple relation. However, some of its elements can be found in the writings of some of the Fathers of the Church – e.g. Athanasius of Alexandria, the Cappadocian Fathers – Basil the Great, Gregory of Nyssa, Gregory of Nazianzus – as well as in the works of Evagrius of Pontus and John Climacus. The continuation of this tradition includes the works of the leading Byzantine theologist of the 11th century St Symeon the New Theologian (949-1022). However, it was not until the 14th century, as a result of the dispute caused by the statements of the Byzantine monk Barlaam of Calabria, that there was a systematic approach to hesychasm in Byzantine writings. In response, St Gregory Palamas (1296-1359), based on the book of the fathers of the Church, systematically described the doctrine of hesychasm in three treatises (triads) entitled In Defence of the Holy Hesychasts, and written in the years 1338-1341. This doctrine, sometimes known as palamism after St Gregory Palamas, was recognised as an authentic expression of Orthodox faith at the council in Constantinople in 1351. The article analyses the most important elements of the hesychastic method and descriptions of the visions experienced during the practice of it.

Zawartą w niej treść kapelani powinni potwierdzać osobistym przykładem i zaangażowaniem.
The history of the pastoral care for the Polish military is going back to the beginning of the Polish state. However the organized pastoral care started its existence after Poland regained its independence in 1918. The border units, which were responsible for security and stability of the internal state, were appointed chaplains for pastoral ministry. Trying to determine what is the military pastoral care we stressed its specific form. Ordinary pastoral tasks conducted among soldiers due to a hermetic structure of military institutions, from being born in this situation, stress, tension and interpersonal and personal problems. A Chaplain should take into account the unique character of the military service and especially problems faced by the officers, acquainting them with the principles of Christian life. Chaplains should remember the motto of the Polish military: God, Honor, Fatherland and they should lead the soldiers by their own example.

The political events in the wake of the February revolution of 1917 in Russia resulted in new, independent national political entities. Ukraine went through the three-stage political metamorphosis, realized by three different governments: socialist, conservative and nationalist. Socio-political transformations also affected religion. The Orthodox Church was exposed to numerous reforming ambitions and aspirations. The main idea was to make the Church national and to grant it an autocephalous status – a problem that the particular Ukrainian revolutionary governments were trying to solve in their own ways. It is worthwhile to analyse the testimonies of the time, which illustrate the engagement of the Orthodox clergy in the processes mentioned above, and the role that the clergy played in the formation of a new Ukrainian statehood.

The article presents the process of formation of the Church language first as a personal norm of saint Cyril, then its transformation into a social norm and afterwards the recognition of Church Slavonic as a determinant of indigenousness. The most important thing in using a religious language is not complete and literal understanding of the message, but the certitude of participation in the traditional culture. That is why the attempts to modernize the cult in the name of comprehension of the message is in most cases ineffective.

The elimination of religion was a fundamental ideological goal of the communist state. According to Marxist theory, religion was a product of material conditions. Working from this premise, militant atheism initially considered that religion would disappear on its own through the coming of the new society system. After the revolution the Bolsheviks started a massive persecution. When it became clear that religion was not dying out on its own, the USSR began general antireligious campaigns. One of the lesser known campaigns was confiscation of saints’ relics, carefully preserved for the purposes of veneration or as a touchable or tangible memorial.
