In the years 2005-2006, within courts of the Collegium Novum of the Jagiellonian University rescue excavations were carried out. As a result, remains of three historic buildings of the University were uncovered: Jerusalem Bursa (built in the years 1453-1456), Philosophers Bursa (erected before 1447), and the Academic Gymnasium (called Stare Classes from years 1589-1643). Archaeological analyses have also shown that before the rise of the Gothic dormitories in the second half of the fourteenth century an older brick buildings existed there, including the domus antiquioris Jherusalem, mentioned as early as 1431.

The Nature Education Centre of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow has in its collection a spectacular fossil of a Jurassic crinoid, in literature known as Seirocrinus subangularis (Miller). Only several museums in Central Europe can boast such a perfectly preserved and complete specimen of Seirocrinus. As seen against Polish museum collections the slab in question is an outstanding object. That very form was a cosmopolitan and pseudoplanktonic crinoid species spread throughout Asia, Europe, and Northern America, yet it has never been documented in Poland. The particular specimen reached Poland in the mid-19th century from Germany to enrich the collection of the Mineralogical Cabinet. The paper presents the turbulent history of the slab with some dozen specimens of echinoderms on it, the story which will shortly have a happy end, since it will be permanently placed as a geological exhibit at the Nature Education Centre of the Jagiellonian University.

Aim: The aim of the article was to show biography of Professor Jan Hulewicz, who was not only a distinguished scholar but an important member of the government in exile during the Second World War. Methods: An analysis of archival materials – manuscripts and unpublished materials kept in the Jagiellonian University Archive, the Institute of National Remembrance, resources of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences in Cracow), and articles and publications. Results: On the basis of all archival materials, the biography of Jan Hulewicz was shown. Just before the outbreak of the Second World War, Jan Hulewicz obtained “habilitacja” at the Jagiellonian University, he was supposed to start lectures in October 1939. After his return to Poland, he continued to work at the Jagiellonian University. Jan Hulewicz was involved in various activities of the Polish government in exile during the Second World War, for instance noteworthy is managing the Fund for National Culture (Pol. Fundusz Kultury Narodowej) described in the article. After the Second World War Jan Hulewicz was several times interrogated by members of the Ministry of Public Security as during the war he worked with Professor Stanisław Kot who was treated as an enemy for the new government in Poland created by the communist party. Conclusions: Profesor Jan Hulewicz who was not only a distinguished scholar but also an important member of the government in exile during the Second World War.

Celem niniejszego tekstu było prześledzenie różnych form upamiętnienia dzieła św. Jadwigi Andegaweńskiej w Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim. W tym celu przykłady zostały podzielone na grupy tematyczne obejmujące: pamięć materialną – zabytki materialne, epigrafika, płyty pamiątkowe; pamięć niematerialną – przypominanie dzieła św. Jadwigi w czasie jubileuszy uczelni oraz fakt patronowania różnym działaniom współcześnie realizowanym w Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim. Jako pierwsze omówiono przykłady związane z pamięcią materialną w tym szczególnie artefakty znajdujące się w Collegium Maius oraz Collegium Novum. Zasygnalizowano dzieje programów heraldycznych pojawiających się w powyższych budynkach, przedstawiając dyskusję dotyczącą herbów umieszczonych na fasadzie Collegium Novum, jak również dzieła malarskie ukazujące dokonania św. Jadwigi. Omówione zostały także dzieje tablic pamiątkowych wmurowanych w gmach Collegium Novum, w których pojawia się postać św. Jadwigi.
The aim of the article is to follow through various forms of memorialization of St. Jadwiga of Poland in the Jagiellonian University. For this aim following thematic groups were created: material remembrance – material monuments, epigraphy, commemorative plaques; non-material remembrance – recollection of her work during University jubilees and the fact of her being a patron of contemporary activities of the University. First, the article describes some examples connected with material remembrance, especially artifacts found in Collegium Maius and Collegium Novum. The history of the heraldic programs found in the above mentioned places has been outlined by presenting a discussion concerning the coats of arms on the façade of Collegium Novum, as well as paintings showing the work of St. Jadwiga. The article also presents the history of commemorative plaques in the walls of Collegium Novum in which the figure of St. Jadwiga appears.

Ważnym etapem w rozwoju umysłowym Zofii Izabeli Łuszczkiewicz były jej studia uniwersyteckie. Zgodnie z tradycją rodzinną odbyła je na uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim. Studiowała tam w latach 1917/18-1921/22. W okresie tym kobiety miały już na krakowskiej uczelni dość ugruntowaną pozycję chociaż nie zostały całkowicie zrównane w prawach w mężczyznami. Pierwsze trzy studentki pojawiły się w Krakowie w r. 1894, na Wydział filozoficzny zostały formalnie dopuszczone w r. 1897 na lekarski w r. 1900 natomiast na prawo dopiero w r. 1900. Zofia Łuszczkiewicz studiowała na Wydziale Filozoficznym nauki chemiczne. Uczęszczała na wykłady i ćwiczenia wybitnych uczonych takich jak Karola Dziewońskiego profesora chemii organicznej, Tadeusza Estreichera kierownika katedry chemii nieorganicznej i analitycznej wybitnego erudyty i popularyzatora wiedzy ora Bohdana Szyszkowskiego specjalisty z zakresu termodynamiki. Poza zajęciami z wybranego kierunku studiów uzupełniała wiedzę w zakresie biologii na wykładach Władysława Szafera, fizyki i u Władysława Natansona a także na prelekcjach z filozofii prowadzonych przez Witolda Rubczyńskiego i Władysława Heinricha. Uzyskała zaliczenia ze wszystkich obowiązujących przedmiotów otrzymując w dn 4 X 1922 absolutorium. Na uczelni krakowskiej zdobyła rzetelną wiedzę a także uczestniczyła w działalności społecznej (Koło Chemików) i miała możliwość pogłębienia religijności w Sodalicji Mariańskiej.
University studies, conducted in accordance with the family tradition at the Jagiel-lonian University, in the years 1917/18-1921/22, were an important stage in the intel-lectual development of Zofia Izabella Łuszczkiewicz. In this period, the position of women at the University was quite well-established, although their rights were not yet equal to those of men. The first three female students appeared in Cracow in 1894, they were formally accepted by the Faculty of Philosophy in 1897, by the Faculty of Medicine in 1900, while by the Faculty of Law only in 1900. Zofia Łuszczkiewicz studied chemical sciences at the Faculty of Philosophy. She attended lectures and classes of outstanding scientists such as Karol Dziewoński, professor of organic chemistry, Tadeusz Estreicher, the head of the department of inorganic and analytical chemistry, a distinguished erudite and science populariser and Bohdan Szyszkowski, a specialist in thermodynamics. Apart from classes in the chosen branch of studies, she supplemented her knowledge in biology at the lectures of Władysław Szafer, in physics at the lectures of Władysław Natanson as well as philosophical lectures of Witold Rubczyński and Władysław Heinrich. She received her credits from all com-pulsory subjects and graduated on October 4, 1922. At the Jagiellonian University, she gained solid knowledge, participated in social activity (Chemistry Circle) and had a possibility to develop her religiosity in Marian Sodality.

In the western part of the Professors’ Garden of the Jagiellonian University, traces of a moat were discovered that could be related to the line of Cracow’s oldest fortifications, built during the reign of Leszek the Black – 1285–1286. The remains of a corner of a later wooden building, with preserved oak foundations (the trees were cut down in 1490 or 1491) and traces of repair (from 1502–1503), were preserved in the covering rubble and can be identified as the remains of the German Bursa (Dormitory) (after 1487–1523).

Professor Dr. Michał Patkaniowski (1907–1972), a distinguished professor at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the Jagiellonian University, had deserved his right to fame as an outstanding scholar and efficient organizer of academic life. His silhouette has been presented in numerous biographical notes, including the Polish Biographical Dictionary. Yet what seems particularly worthy of recalling here are his efforts to expand the library collection of the historical and legal chairs. Thanks to his efforts, the collection became enlarged by over 3000 books which had been withdrawn from the libraries of Krakow courts as well as from the libraries of other courts in Krakow’s surroundings

Czy ks. Józef Bilczewski (do 30 listopada 1885 ks. Józef Biba) był kandydatem na wykładowcę teologii dogmatycznej na Wydziale Teologicznym UJ? Prezentowane w tekście źródła zbliżają do twierdzącej odpowiedzi na to pytanie. Jakie jednak wykłady miałby prowadzić ks. J. Bilczewski i do jakiej katedry miał być przypisany? Decyzje w tych kwestiach uzależniano od zmian personalnych na Wydziale Teologicznym UJ. Po zatrudnieniu w 1887 r. ks. Mariana Morawskiego SJ, który objął kierownictwo Katedry Dogmatyki Specjalnej, postanowiono przekazać w ręce ks. J. Bilczewskiego Katedrę Dogmatyki Fundamentalnej w celu oddzielenia jej od Katedry Filozofii Chrześcijańskiej, z którą była połączona za sprawą prowadzącego oba kursy ks. Stefana Pawlickiego CR. W świetle źródeł wyraźnie widać, że kolejni dziekani Wydziału Teologicznego – od momentu powrotu ks. J. Bilczewskiego do Krakowa z wiedeńskim doktoratem – podejmowali działania mające na celu przygotowanie go do działalności naukowo-dydaktycznej na fakultecie teologicznym. Stąd poruszenia wymaga kolejny problem: dlaczego ostatecznie – 1 lutego 1891 r. – został zatrudniony na stanowisku profesora nadzwyczajnego dogmatyki specjalnej na Uniwersytecie Lwowskim? Stanowi jednak on temat do osobnych rozważań.
Was Fr. Józef Bilczewski (until November 30, 1885 Fr. Józef Biba) a candidate for the chair of dogmatic theology at the Theological Faculty of the Jagiellonian University? The sources discussed in this article suggest so. But what lectures did Fr. J. Bilczewski supposedly give, and to what chair was he supposedly assigned? Decisions on these matters depended on personnel changes at the UJ Theological Faculty. After the hiring in 1887 of Fr. Marian Morawski SJ, who took charge of the Department of Special Dogmatics, it was decided that the Department of Fundamental Dogmatics would be handed over to Fr. J. Bilczewski so that it would be separated from the Department of Christian Philosophy, with which it was connected through Fr. Stefan Pawlicki CR, who taught both courses. According to the sources, it is clear that successive deans of the Faculty of Theology – ever since Fr. J. Bilczewski returned to Krakow with his doctorate from Vienna – took measures to prepare him for scientific and didactic work at the faculty of theology. Hence, one more problem needs to be broached: why was he ultimately – on February 1, 1891 – hired as an associate professor of special dogmatics at the University of Lviv? However, this is a subject for separate consideration.

This paper presents examples of mathematical models which have almost passed into oblivion, yet a few decades ago still played a significant role in the teaching of mathematics. In the late nineteenth century such devices started to be produced on a large scale for schools and universities. The Jagiellonian University Museum has three such models in perfect condition in its collections.
W artykule podajemy przykłady modeli matematycznych, obecnie niemal zapomnianych, które jeszcze kilkadziesiąt lat temu odgrywały wielką rolę w dydaktyce matematyki. Z końcem XIX wieku powstała prężna produkcja tych modeli na użytek szkół i uczelni. W Muzeum UJ zachowały się w doskonałym stanie trzy takie modele.

This article describes the residency of the multimedia artist Karolina Grzywnowicz and a research team that accompanied her at the Botanic Garden of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. In the first section the authors offer a critical analysis of the discourses produced by the Garden and embedded in the modernist paradigm where nature and culture are perceived as separate constructs. This paradigm is juxtaposed with the imagination crisis (in envisaging the spatial scale of ecological crises and their processes) and human responsibility. The second section focuses on a performance tour of the Garden prepared by Grzywnowicz and her team at the end of their two-week-long project. The authors analyse this event using the category of speculative practice proposed by Isabelle Stengers. How does the narrative constructed by the artist resonate within the discourse created by the Garden? Has the artist’s speculative practice resulted in an alternative approach to the human–matter relationship? Has it changed the way in which people think about the Garden?

Przedstawia burzliwy czas wymiany kadrowej, przypadającej na lata 1869–1872, a w szczególności starania Ksawerego Liskego i Wincentego Zakrzewskiego o profesurę UJ, wspierane przez niedawno powołanego profesora historii polskiej Józefa Szujskiego. Wymienieni historycy zapoczątkowali proces profesjonalizacji badań historycznych w Krakowie i Lwowie, współtworzyli zaplecze instytucjonalne, zaprowadzili nowe standardy kształcenia, przenosząc na grunt polski wzorce niemieckiej szkoły krytycznej.
The text is devoted to the history of the Department of General History at the Jagiellonian University in the final period of Polonization of the Faculty of Philosophy. It presents the turbulent time of the personnel exchange in 1869–72, and especially the efforts of Ksawery Liske and Wincenty Zakrzewski for a professorship at the University, supported by the recently appointed professor of Polish history, Józef Szujski. These historians initiated the process of professionalization of historical research in Cracow and Lwów (Lviv, Lemberg), jointly established the institutional back-up facilities, and introduced new educational standards by transferring the models of the German critical school to Poland.

In 1954, arbitrarily and without consulting with the Catholic Church, the communist authorities transferred the Faculties of Theology of the Jagiellonian University and the University of Warsaw to a new university that they had created without a canonical mandate – the Academy of Catholic Theology in Warsaw. Instead of accepting the Polish communists’ unilateral decision, the Holy See transferred the rights of the Faculty of Theology in Krakow to the Archdiocesan Major Seminary, whose faculty eventually was given the right to have the adjective “Pontifical” in its title. Although it did not have authority from the state, it continued to offer post-secondary education and bestow academic titles upon its graduates. On the basis of this, Pope John Paul II, who as the Archbishop of Krakow was not only officially its great chancellor but also its promoter and special custodian, established the Pontifical Academy of Theology in 1981. This article presents the history of the Pontifical Faculty of Theology in 1954-1982. Its activity in later years as the Pontifical Academy of Theology, which in 2009 became the Pontifical University of John Paul II, will be presented in the second part of this text.

Praktyki zawodowe są ważnym elementem kształcenia na kierunku informacja naukowa i bibliotekoznawstwo. Istotnie wpływają na poszerzenie kompetencji zawodowych studentów, co w przyszłości decyduje o możliwości ich zatrudnienia. W niniejszym artykule podjęto analizę realizacji praktyk na przestrzeni ostatnich ośmiu lat (2004/2005–2011/2012) w Instytucie Informacji Naukowej i Bibliotekoznawstwa Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego, na podstawie dokumentacji zgromadzonej w instytucie. W analizie brano pod uwagę miejsca praktyk, rodzaje instytucji, w których one przebiegały, oraz opinie opiekunów praktyk i studentów. Przedstawiono także zmiany w programach praktyk, wynikające z wdrażania nowego programu kształcenia w instytucie, opracowanego zgodnie z Krajowymi Ramami Kwalifikacji dla Szkolnictwa Wyższego, oraz ich wpływ na szanse absolwentów na rynku pracy.
Traineeship programs constitute an important element in higher education in research information and librarianship. They significantly influence and improve professional competence of students, which may turn out to be decisive in their prospective employment. The present article attempts to analyze the quality the traineeship program offered by the Institute of Research Information and Librarianship at the Jagiellonian University within the time frame of the past eight years (2004/2005-2011/2012). The analysis is based on the available documentation kept at the institute. The analysis includes a review of the location of placements, types of host institutions and opinions of traineeship programs supervisors and students involved. In addition, the changes introduced to the traineeship program resulting from the implementation of a new curriculum at the institute, devised according to the All-National Framework of Professional Qualifications for higher education institutions, are presented and discussed. The article is concluded with a discussion on the possible influence of traineeship program upon future chances of employment on the labour market.

This article attempts to sum up the research conducted in the Jagiellonian Library in connection with its participation in the project entitled “NUKAT – The Highway of Digital Information”, executed between 2009 and 2012 by the University Library in Warsaw. Besides introducing the concepts, the general premises of the project and the mandatory procedures as well as presenting particular stages of merging data, this article also describes the process of merging the Computer Catalogue of the Collections of the Jagiellonian University Libraries Collections with the National Union Catalogue NUKAT, including the preliminary, administrative and follow-up work that was done in the Jagiellonian Library in connection with this enterprise. The aim of this article is to give a broad outline of this project as well as to present the results of an analysis performed on a control group of 5500 merged records in connection with some abnormalities that had been detected. This analysis was done on the basis of reports additionally prepared by the NUKAT Centre at the request of the Jagiellonian Library during the course of the project as well as after particular stages of merging catalogues were finished. The article is summed up by the conclusions and the evaluation of the project which are based on the control material and on the data gathered by the author while she was coordinating the project.

W artykule poddano analizie życiorysy 39 profesorów Wydziału Teologicznego Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego i Uniwersytetu Jana Kazimierza we Lwowie. Rozważania dotyczą tych aktywności w ramach ich drogi naukowej i zawodowej, które były realizowane poza obszarem ziem polskich. Takie działania były widoczne już na etapie studiów wyższych. Zdecydowana większość interesujących nas osób wybierała jako jedyne lub jedno z kilku miejsc kształcenia uczelnie zagraniczne, podobnie było w przypadku wyboru miejsca uzyskania doktoratu. Najbardziej popularne w przypadku studiów i doktoratu były uczelnie w Rzymie (szczególnie tamtejszy Uniwersytet Gregoriański) oraz Uniwersytety w Innsbrucku i Monachium. Wybór placówek rzymskich nie może dziwić, biorąc pod uwagę fakt, że wszystkie analizowane osoby były duchownymi. W przypadku pracy zawodowej liczba pobytów zagranicznych wyraźnie uległa zmniejszeniu, choć w życiorysach części osób znajdujemy i takie elementy.
The article analyzes the biographies of 39 professors of the Faculties of Theology at the Jagiellonian University and the Jan Kazimierz University in Lvov. The particular focus is on their scientific and professional activities beyond the Polish lands. The first stage of foreign scientific travel often came with the choice of the alma mater. The vast majority of the professors chose foreign universities either as the only one or as one of more educational destinations. The same goes for the place where they decided to obtain a doctorate. The most popular choices for university studies and doctorates were universities in Rome (especially the Pontifical Gregorian University) and the universities in Innsbruck and Munich. Rome, in particular, seems to have been an obvious choice, given that the professors were all clergymen. The number of professional foreign stays was not as high as the number of scientific ones, though such elements are present in some of the biographies.
