Opis:
The article “Trade in alcohol in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and participation Jews in it (in the end of XIV – 1572)” the author used numerous published sources. He explores: the emergence of alcoholic beverages, legal conditions for such trade, taxation and its and profitability, activity alcohol trade institutions, competition between traders of alcohol, the composition of the merchants alcohol, extension of drunkenness. The author found that the number of Jewish institutions alcohol trade increased, but most of them were in the hands of Christians. Nonetheless, manifestations of economic antisemitism took place.

Several attempts were made in the Kyiv Metropolis to translate the basic version of the Emerald (Izmaragd) from Church Slavonic to Ruthenian. These translations were fragmentary, though. The oldest translation, limited to 17 initial chapters of the Emerald, is known in the version dating back to the last quarter of the 15th century. This translation was later partially (8 сhapters) used in compiling the Gnojno version of the Emerald, which consisted of 29 texts in Ruthenian. At least four other Ruthenian chapters from the Emerald dating back to late 16th century are contained in the collection from Pavel Simson’s compendium No 2. Another three texts are found in a collection which dates back to early 17th century and is stored in the Andrey Sheptytsky National Museum in Lviv.

The healing texts of heterogeneous origin are preserved in the manuscripts of the Belarusian Tatars in large numbers. According to written sources, they have been widely used in the past in the Tatar environment. Recent field studies show that the healing texts have not yet completely disappeared from use. These texts have deep roots in the ancient Turkic culture, and also reflect various influences, mainly from the side of Islam, as well as from the Christian-Slavic environment. In general, the healing texts are very interesting sources for analyzing the traditional worldviews of the Belarusian Tatars.

Sotnya’s (hundreds) in the cities of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the early New Age are a unique phenomenon in which Belarusian historians see traditions of the ancient Rus. However, in the sources of the 15th–18th centuries there are no mentions of continuity with the urban tradition of the previous era, and the spread of hundreds and tens in the cities on the border of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was caused by the military confrontation with the Moscow State and the Crimean Khanate. They may have originated on the basis of local traditions of the organization of the infantry, which has its roots in times of ancient Rus, at the same time on their formation could have a significant influence the pattern of organization of the Polish infantry. Hundreds and tens remained of military importance until the middle of the 17th century, but from their appearance until the 18th century, they were equally effective fiscal and administrative units and influenced local government.

Opis:
In the 15th–16 th. centuries most of the cities and towns of Ukrainian lands, which were part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, were concentrated in Volyn land, where the geographical factor was quite favorable for social development. The cities, along with the castles, remained strategic frontiers of the military organization of the state, outpost of protection against external aggression, which required constant attention from the state. The spreading process of the craft separation from agriculture caused the need for sales markets and increased the demand for agricultural products. Due to the auspices policy there was a process of specialization of production, the changes took place in the structure of the of the population work, a shop handicraft and craft were developed , the number of urban population in general and the township in particular increased. The Magdeburg law was acrued to Volyn cities from Germany via Poland and Lithuania, when appropriate socio-economic and political conditions similar to those of Western Europe were created for this purpose. The transition of the cities’ administration to the Magdeburg law was a reflection of the process of the establishment of Slavic law in the West European lands in general, since it was being modified, in particular under the influence of German law. The introduction of the Magdeburg law in Volyn cities was expanded considering the national traditions of customary law; however, it was an original process that took place with considerable delay compared to the cities of Western Europe. The fate of Volyn cities in the context of their incorporation into the political-legal system of GDL was also determined by geostrategic and political factors that were in progress during 14th and 15th centuries – struggle for Volyn and Podillya between Lithuania and the Kingdom of Poland. The Magdeburg law became not only a means of modernizing of the public relations, but also the instrument of political influence of the Polish Crown, aimed at incorporating the Volyn and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in general, into Poland. In this context, the socio-political conditions for granting Lutsk land a privilege on the Magdeburg law by the Polish King Władysław Jagailo on October 30, 1432 are indicative. The privilege of 1432 was unique among such acts, since it provided German law not to the city or to the burghers, but to all residents of Lutsk land. Apparently, this format had, above all, an important political significance – an attempt to attract Lutsk land to the Polish kingdom as closely as possible, its own economic component had been secondary, since in the privilege there were no specific indications as to the order of the organization of trades and fairs, the scope of the powers of Vogt, etc., which was obligatory component part of similar acts. The structure and functions of the local self-government bodies depended upon many factors, including statute of the cities: state-owned (grand-prince) or private-owned, privileged, or not, with full and incomplete Magdeburg law.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to present changes in the position of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania towards the Polish Crown within the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the years 1569–1791. The analysis was based on the transformation of both common (monarch, Sejm) and separate (central and local offices, judicial system and law) institutions in the context of economic, social and cultural changes of the era. Gradually, the Commonwealth was transforming into a state in which Lithuania was not so much one of its two parts – along with the Crown, but one of its three provinces – along with Lesser Poland and Greater Poland. It was, however, a special province since it had its own ministers, offices, courts, treasury and fiscal courts along with its own codification of political and private law. The rule introduced in 1673 that every third Sejm was to be held in Grodno, however, was rarely observed. The reasons for this change were: the smaller population of the Grand Duchy, its lower fiscal income along with the war damage and territorial losses suffered in the mid-17th century. This transformation was also facilitated by the fact that the Lithuanian political system and laws became increasingly similar to the Polish ones. Another factor was the slow creation of a sense of political community among nobles of both the Crown and Lithuania. This feeling was born not only out of the same rights and privileges, but also owing to the immigration of the Crown noblemen to the lands of the Grand Duchy and joining – by marriage – Lithuanian noble families, which was especially the case among magnate families. During this period, the common culture of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth based on the Polish language – lingua franca of the whole state – was also created. Other languages also functioned in the Polish- -Lithuanian state, but Polish, enriched by Lithuanian, Ruthenian, Latin, German and Oriental elements, began to dominate. The Government Act of 3 May 1791 did not mention the Grand Duchy at all, but created a common government for the whole of Commonwealth – the Guard of Laws and Great Commissions. Mutual Pledge of the Two Nations, unanimously adopted on 20 October 1791, constituted an attempt to return to the dualism from the era of the Union of Lublin. This act granted Lithuanians half of the commissioners in the military and fiscal commissions and – in the future – in the police commission. Lithuania also retained separate ministers, offices, a separate treasury and tax judiciary. Thus, the gradual unification of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was still visible, while maintaining some separate aspects, which were important for Lithuanians, albeit secondary in the scale of the entire state. Nevertheless, this process was interrupted by the upcoming partitions.

Kompetencje językowe wykorzystywali w pracy duszpasterskiej i edukacyjnej. Zakonnicy w Wielkim Księstwie Litewskim, wraz z parafialnym duchowieństwem unickim, tworzyli środowisko podtrzymujące znajomość tradycji piśmienniczej języka ruskiego. Kompetencje językowe bazylianów kształtowały formy i treści przekazu w pracy duszpasterskiej, szerzenie wiary i umożliwiały korelacje pomiędzy dziedzictwem kulturowym grup językowych. Umiejętności zakonników pozwalały im pełnić rolę pośredników treści pomiędzy społecznościami różnych kręgów językowych i pomiędzy kulturą elitarną i egalitarną.
The activity of the Basilian congregation is crucial to understanding the cultural, social, religious transformations and relations occurring at the cultural borderlands marked by the Latin and Byzantine cultural circles. Based on the catalogue of Basilians studying at the papal seminary in Vilnius between 1611 and 1795, and a census of the monks from 1800, the paper analyses the linguistic competences of the Basilians of the Lithuanian province. The monks usually had knowledge of three languages i.e., Latin, Polish and „Sclavonica” or „Ruthenica”. In the second half of the 18th century, Basilians expanded their linguistic competences to include knowledge of modern languages: French, German and Italian. In response to pastoral needs, they used Lithuanian, Samogitian and Latvian. The monks used their linguistic competences in their pastoral and educational work. The monks in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, together with the Unitarian parish clergy, formed an environment that maintained the literary tradition of the Ruthenian language. Basilians’ linguistic competences shaped the forms of content and message in pastoral work, spreading faith and enabling correlations between the cultural heritage of various linguistic groups. The monks’ skills enabled them to act as content intermediaries between communities of different linguistic backgrounds and between elite and egalitarian culture.

Jedną z form aktywności zakonu litewskiej prowincji bazylianów w XVII i XVIII wieku była praca w miejscach kultu maryjnego. Dzięki zabiegom bazylianów dwa otaczane kultem wizerunki maryjne zostały ukoronowane koronami papieskimi. W miejscach gromadzących licznie przybywających pątników tworzyli oprawę wizualną i muzyczną. Miejsca kultu maryjnego kreowane przez bazylianów przyczyniały się do wzmacniania wspólnoty Cerkwi unickiej i integracji zróżnicowanego społeczeństwa na północno-wschodnich obszarach państwa polsko-litewskiego.
One of the tasks of the Basilian Order of the Lithuanian Province in the 17th and 18th centuries was activity at the places of Marian cult. Thanks to the Basilians' efforts, two venerated Marian images were crowned with papal crowns. The Basilians initiated the practice of celebrating jubilee years and benefited from the indulgence privileges granted by the Holy See. They created visual and musical settings at places which attracted large numbers of pilgrims. Marian places of worship created by the Basilians contributed to the strengthening of the Uniate Orthodox Church community and the integration of the diverse society in the north-eastern areas of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

This article explores the structure and patterns of formation of court registers included in the Lithuanian Metrica of King Sigismund Augustus. The text focuses on the development and composition of the books attributed to the scribe called Jan Szymkowicz (Court Record Book no. 35, Book of Entries no. 38), with documents spanning a fourteen-year period (1554–1568). Th e article concludes that during King Sigismund Augustus’ rule, under the chancellorship of Mikołaj Radziwiłł called Czarny (Th e Black), there was in the chancery of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania no uniform pattern to be followed in order to make the king’s court registers, despite the fact that, in the mid-sixteenth century, chancery’s scribes usually infl uenced the chronological scope and structure of these registers.
W artykule omówiono strukturę i zasady kompletowania ksiąg sądowych Zygmunta Augusta w Metryce Litewskiej. This article explores the structure and patterns of formation of court registers included in the Lithuanian Metrica of King Sigismund Augustus. The article concludes that during King Sigismund Augustus’ rule, under the chancellorship of Mikołaj Radziwiłł called Czarny (The Black), there was in the chancery of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania no uniform pattern to be followed in order to make the king’s court registers, despite the fact that, in the mid-sixteenth century, chancery’s scribes usually influenced the chronological scope and structure of these registers.

Thanks to the publication of the last will of Princess Zofia Fiodorowa Jamontowicz Podbereska of 1510, the author of the article attempts to explain certain issues connected with the genealogy of the Lithuanian knyaz family of Jamontowicz who resided in the eastern territories of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. An important element of the work is the discovery of the first name of Zofia’s husband (Fiodor) – the penultimate male representative of the family (the father of the knyaz Siemion Jamontowicz Podbereski) and the fact that Fiodor’s daughter Julianna became a nun and later around 1539 the mother superior of the convent (hegumen) a er her marriage with Jacek Sieńkowicz had been nullified.

Belorussian zamowy and other folk medicine texts as evidence for linguistic and cultural permeation in the former Grand Duchy of LithuaniaThis paper presents the lexical material stored in the Belorussian zamowy: names of holidays, prayers, designations of the sacred and clergy portaits, as well as names and nationalities. The documentation, coming from two sets of Belorussian zamowy (addresses given in references), shows clearly that these texts – which usually come with a classic construction, important for those telling them – preserved traces of multilingualism, different religions and dialects, as well as the information about the nationalities residing in the area. Some lexemes (or groups of lexemes) mix two or three languages. What is more, it often occurs that literary language and the standard variety (Polish) are mixed with Belorussian dialects, which stems from the historical circumstances the area studied. Such information could be preserved in zamowy because słowa or szepty (as they were called) had strictly defined structure, and had to include certain lexemes that always came in the same pre-defined order.

Opis:
The present article focuses on the acts of the Supreme Tribunal of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the late 18th century. It is claimed that the records produced by the chancery or clerk’s office of this court in the discussed period were influenced by both centuries-old traditions and reforms carried out in 1764 and subsequent years. The transfer of powers to manage the work of the chancery to Tribunal judges did not have a negative effect on its efficiency because, in practice, a quite clear division of duties among court officials was observed. One of them was responsible for recording real estate property transactions into the acts of statements as well as keeping official and private documentation (he kept the book of acts and a protocol into which he registered the acts transferred to him). The other three sworn-in clerks were required to draw up verdicts; they were responsible for the decree books (final versions) and sentencjonarz (which was referred to in the Lithuanian Tribunal as a decree protocol), in which they placed the content of rulings delivered during the proceedings of taking evidence. One more clerk kept records of the cases in which suits were presented, and the last one compiled an on-going protocol, in which he registered the so-called judicial appeals, and recorded all the major activities related to the functioning of the court and its verdicts regarding litigations addressed to it
Przedmiotem artykułu są akta Trybunału Głównego Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego w II poł. XVIII w. Kancelarii Trybunału Litewskiego poświęcono kilka prac naukowych, jednak akta tego sądu nie zostały dotąd należycie rozpoznane. Obserwowana obecnie intensyfikacja badań dotyczących funkcjonowania i wytworów kancelarii sądów szlacheckich na terenie Korony skłania do podjęcia analogicznego tematu odnośnie do ziem Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego.
