Opis:
Discovered by the Portuguese in the 15th century, the Azorean islands in the middle of North Atlantic hosted societies that perpetuated customs, traditions and festivities introduced by the settlers. However, the constraints inherent to history and geography have contributed to the implementation of some specific features and differences between the islands. As the archipelago has been notorious for human mobility, it was not only populated by the Portuguese King and other Europeans, but it was also the starting point of many emigration flows towards the New World (the Americas). Thus, besides few personal objects in their luggage, the immigrants took to the receiving territories, such as Brazil and, later on, the USA, demonstrations of their religiosity and their daily life experiences, that is to say, remarkable traces of their cultural identity, which have been consolidating and persisting, until our days, among the Azorean diaspora communities and their descendants. Our approach seeks to explain the origins of one of the most relevant Azorean identity manifestations — the festivities in honor of the Holy Spirit — starting from the practices of the present and explained by the concept of cultural identity, in particular associated with the Azorean islands.
