South Slavonic trebnik in the 15th century
Vladislav the Grammarian
Opis:
The article explores and offers a diplomatic edition of A Very Useful Confession for Unction for Every Christian, for the Black and White Clergy. This is an autograph by Vladislav the Grammarian placed in the Trebnik of Monk David (1480s), manuscript 1/42 in the collection of the Rila Monastery. The analysis is based on the working hypothesis that after the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks in 1453, the Ottoman invasion of the Balkans was perceived as a God’s punishment for the sins of the Orthodox Christians. This idea became strongly present in a number of texts. Penitential prayer patterns multiply in the literature. The Greek prototype of the text under study has not been identified yet, but features a close relation to the prayers with the so-called accumulation of sins. It is, in essence, a confession which is performed in connection with the sacrament of the eleosvet (anointing of the sick) before receiving communion and the anointing with holy oil. The textual unit was purposefully introduced into Monk David’s Trebnik and reflected topical textual additions to the basic composition of the Slavonic Trebnik.

Opis:
The article presents the Lithuanian expedition carried out in Livonia in the winter of 1579. On the basis of the itinerary [itinerarium] and iconographic and written sources it has been established that three regiments were to act in a coordinated manner to conduct the military action against the Russian Empire. All the three regiments were to set off from Kieś [Wenden] and through different ways reach Dorpat [Tartu] occupied by the Russians. The whole expedition included about 200 cavalry soldiers and about 400 common infantry soldiers [Polish: drab] along with several light artillery and a numerous lager. Owing to the activities undertaken by the three regiments, destructions were much more extensive, more loot was acquired and military successes were more significant – the castle of Kierepeć was conquered. The activity of three separate regiments confused the enemy and prevented them from undertaking the effective defence. The expedition was carried out from 16 February to 6 March, which also affected its outcome. The late winter provided the best conditions for the land communication, while the upcoming thaw made it impossible for the enemy to launch the counter-defence. It resulted in the safe return to Kieś and a lack of Moscovite units sent from Dorpat. To my way of thinking, the winter expedition of 1579 to Livonia was the best example of the manoeuvre art of the Polish-Lithuanian army in the 16th century. The routes of two regiments (the left one and the central one) ran close to each other, while the third one (the right one) had a totally different route entering the Russian lands from the back. The right regiment was commanded by the Oberst [Colonel] of Courland Jürgen Buttler, who conquered the castle of Kierepeć [Kirempe]. The main unit was commanded by Krzysztof Radziwiłł nicknamed “Perkūnas”, who plundered the vicinities of Dorpat. The analysis of the itinerary of 1579 prepared by Krzysztof Radziwiłł indicates that the mile recorded there corresponded to 8 kilometres. The average daily velocity of the expedition Kieś–Dorpat–Kieć amounted to 21.55 km, which corresponded to 2.7 miles. During the expedition the regiments covered from 250 to 310 km, which along with the return journey amounted to 500 km.

The article analyzes two accounts of the holy orders received by Stanisław of Kowal, a priest from the Włocławek diocese, at the end of the 15th century. The original documents including the content of the accounts have not been preserved – we are familiar only with their copies, which were recorded in the files of the General Consistory of Włocławek. The first account was prepared in Cracow on 29 September 1493. It includes the information about Stanisław being ordained to acolyte by the suffragan bishop of Cracow Paweł. The other account was written in the chancery of the bishop of Chełm Maciej. It reads that in 1494 the bishop Maciej granted Stanisław of Kowal all higher holy orders. The “source annex” enclosed to the main part of the work constitutes the edition of both sources discussed in the article.

Bartholomew of Jaslo’s Recommendation of logic: Bartholomew of Jasło was a professor at the University of Prague and the University of Kraków, active about the turn of the 14th century. He was mostly interested in logic, methodology, and social changes, as equal access to education for everyone, no matter their status. His first, and only so far edited, work is the so-called First sermon of the restoration of University. Most of the so far discovered works by Bartholomew are sermons, mostly based on Seneca, Boethius, and others, authors not so popular in his day. The paper introduces to the edition of two redactions just such a sermon: his opening lecture to logic (recommendation of logic).

Opis:
Nicholas Tempelfeld of Brzeg (ca. 1400–1471) was a distinguished Silesian figure among the scholar of the University of Krakow: he was a professor of theology educated there, a dean of the Faculty of Arts, a canonic of St. Florian’s Chapel, a preacher in St. Mary’s Church in Krakow and St. Elisabeth’s Church in Wroclaw, and even a politician, if we may call the author of the treatise against Czech king George of Podiebrad so. His philosophical output remains unknown since he seems to have written a single commentary on Aristotle (Parva naturalia) and is to be discovered on the basis of research into his university sermons. The paper presents the edition (preceded by a substantial introduction) of two redactions — a draft and a proper redaction — of such a sermon: his opening lectures on Summulae logicales by Peter of Spain, composed during his activity at the University of Krakow. The draft consists of seven notabilia only, dealing primarily with some general problems concerning logic. The proper redaction is a deeply elaborated introduction to Peter’s work, that — according to Nicholas — should be entitled: The treatise by Peter of Spain dealing with the argumentation and some other things relating to it, compiling views of the other philosophers, composed because of the love for young students to these students obtain the way of argumentation, as well as the possibility to discern the truth from the false. It contains the recommendation of logic, some general logical problems, like the causes and subject matter of commented text, and the accessus to the first part of the Tractatus. Both versions of the sermon are preserved in Ms. Wroclaw, University Library, cod. I Q 380.

Zbliżoną ikonografię i technikę wykonania mają preteksta z Ukrzyżowaniem i symbolami ewangelistów datowana na czas ok. 1440 roku (dzieło austriackie) w Bayerisches Nationalmuseum w Monachium, a przede wszystkim grupa pretekst wytworzonych w warsztacie krakowskim w trzeciej ćwierci wieku XV.
Jahrhunderts (ggf. Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts) datiert wird.
In the Corpus Christi church in Krakow remains of blue silk textile adorned with embroideries are preserved. They are framed and described as a velum from the 18th century. These fragments of embroidery in couched metal threads complemented with silk threads in flat stitches depict a medallion with a winged eagle holding a scroll with the inscription “Joh[a]nns” and below a titulus of the cross with the inscription INRI. Two other parts of the textile show remains of medallions with a winged ox and a figure with a scroll and on two small fragments remained an edging embroidered on the parchment padding. Very similar iconography and technique can be found in an orphrey in Bayerisches Nationalmuseum in Münnich thought to be made in Austria about 1440 and above all the group of orphreys created in the Krakow workshop in the third quarter of the 15th century. The thus enabled reconstruction from the fragments in the Corpus Christi Church an orphrey and to date it to second quarter of the 15th century (probably late forties).

Opis:
Wykorzystano w nich formy kół, ostrołuków, łęków półkolistych, wieloliści i rybich pęcherzy stosowane w poprzednich okresach. Z elementów tych powstały nowe kompozycje, często stanowiące zwielokrotnienie układów wcześniejszych, ponieważ tworzono je dla szerokich okien cztero, sześcio, a nawet ośmiodzielnych.
The article presents Silesian traceries which have survived in ten churches created from the beginning of the 15th to mid16th and also in chapels of churches built earlier. With regard to their composition they may be divided into a central one or several levels. Such forms as circles, pointed arches, semicircular arches, multifoils and mouchettes were used as in former periods. New compositions were formed from these elements, often being manifold of earlier ones, because they were created for wide quadripartite, sexpartite, and octopartite windows. The new arrangement appeared in the central composition of the window in St Peter and Paul Church in Legnica modeled on the north rosette in the Chartres Cathedral. Rotating mouchettes appeared seldom because they were used in new compositions. In a few windows the whole windowhead were filled with identical, small motives. There appeared curvilinear forms and compositions. Traceries have an English origin in which dense fluting is connected, in the upper part, by individual pointed arches and with fluting intersecting in the area below the arch. Silesian builders were familiar with traceries used in the West and they created their own new compositions with these elements.

Opis:
The article is concerned with the origin of the defense system of the brick buildings erected by the Order of Friars Minor Observants, commonly known as the Brown Franciscans or the Bernardines. Bernadine monasteries were situated outside the town walls, often in retired spots, which was their characteristic feature. According to the rule that was obliging then all the monastery buildings were wooden. Foundation of the Opatów monastery was an exception to this rule, as the monks received an already existing brick church, situated on a hill. The beginnings of Bernadine monasteries, especially ones situated in the territories of the Polish east and south-east borderland, coincided with the threat of Tartar attacks. This could result in a process of disappearance of Bernadine monasteries in those areas. To resist this the Opatów Bernardines gave the features of a defense system to their buildings. Efficiency of this approach was proven by the Tartar attack on Opatów in 1502 when only the fortified church and monastery survived. Also other Bernadine monasteries (among others Tarnów, Lvov, Vilnius) fortified their buildings, in this way strengthening the towns' defenses. In order not to oppose the requirements of the binding rule the monks applied for the Pope's permit that would authorize adjusting the monastery buildings to the local political realities.

The fact of both cities of Königsberg being taken over by the Teutonic Order caused that the town councilors supporting the incorporation of Prussia to Poland were forced to leave the cities. Eventually, they settled down in Gdañsk, Elblag and Malbork [Marienburg]. The advocates of the Teutonic Order from Malbork found shelter in Königsberg. For both groups the emigration meant the loss of property and estates, which were later granted in return for loyalty by King Casimir Jagiellon and Grand Master Konrad von Erlichshausen to their advocates who had been forced to emigrate. The representatives of both groups tried to regain their property in their family towns, but their attempts turned out to bear no fruit. Some of them were appointed town councilors or even mayors in their new places of residence, but such careers were not very common.

Wallachian pastoralism
transhumance
Poland in the 15th-16th century
Opis:
The arguments included in the article were based on a small number of information preserved in the sources, which concern a seasonal presence of the Wallachian shepherds in the areas situated north of the line designating the scope of permanent (year-round) rural settlements founded on the Wallachian law. It was practised both in forests belonging to the king as well as in private estates throughout all seasons. This research resulted in the thesis stating that groups of the Wallachian shepherds led a seasonal grazing of their herds in the submontane areas already in the 15th century. Various factors, primarily of an economic nature, made these pastoral activities disappear or, at least, made them significantly limited at the turn of the 16th and 17th century. Pastoralism of a transhumance type existed throughout the entire period under discussion, in modern sources referred to as koszarnictwo (transhumance herding), consisting in periodic migrations of pastoral groups from permanent villages. Similarly to what I have claimed in my previously published research on the Wallachian pastoralism in the Carpathian areas, there are no indications in the sources, which would justify a thesis for a long time widespread in historical studies, on the presence of a nomadic phase in the history of the Wallachian colonization in the Polish areas. Also in the case of the areas currently studied, its existence can be given no confirmation.

In the first part of the paper Jacob’s biography is reminded. Jacob of Sienno (Jakub z Sienna, 1413–1480) was a diplomat, a politician, the bishop of Kujawy and next the archbishop of Gniezno. He was born in an nobleman family, studied in Rome and in the mid 1430’s pursued his ecclesiastical and political career. He turned back to Italy many times, both as a royal diplomat and a political refugee during his conflict with king Casimir IV Jagiellon. The author stresses the fact that in his Italian journeys he must have come in contact with the early Humanistic culture, which is proved for instance by his collection of Renaissance decorated books acquired in Italy. In the second part the author reveals the circumstances in which the poem was written. The deliberations here touch upon the problem of authorship. Although some researchers made aconjecture that the author would have been Leonardo Mansueti (1414–1480), the Master General of the Dominican Order and Jacob’s friend, a hypothesis that an anonymous Cracow scholar would have been the grateful poet is more convincing. The author reminds a long-standing relationship between Jacob and the University of Cracow. As a patron of the university the bishop made it a gift of his library. The third part contains analysis of the text. The poet drew a picture of a bishop-good shepherd and a wise statesman devoted to the country. To construct such a figure, typical for Renaissance literature in the next century, he employed the classical rhetoric, astrology and especially the Stoic philosophy. The analysis leads to the conclusion that To Jacob of Sienno can be one of the first Humanistic panegyrics in Poland. It can be considered a result of Jacob’s patronage on literature and fine arts. At the end the author asserts that the bishop courts in Poland in the 15th century were important centres of Humanistic culture, among them Jacob’s court. Future research on this topic can shed new light on the beginnings of the Renaissance in Poland. Additionally, the paper provides critical edition of the Latin text and its Polish translation with commentaries

Opis:
Presented paper contains the critical edition of the question Utrum universal nihil sit aut posterius suis singularibus of the Collectanea de anima preserved in MS. BJ 2118. Collectanea de anima is a provisional title of the collection of 6 questions dealing with the problem of the soul, composed in Krakow in the 2nd half of the 15th century. This manual has a heterogenic character, since every question differs from the others regarding its form, multidimensionality of undertaken issues and the degree of doctrinal independence. Surely, the 3rd question edited here (precisely its part that has been preserved till today, i.e. the introduction and first passage of articulus 1) is not too original work and does not include any remarkable statements. But yet, it is an important testimony of work of compilers, that nowadays only uncommonly is a subject of studies. The edited text in general is doctrinally dependent: first of all, it is based on the works by Thomas Aquinas, Albert the Great and Alexander Bonini of Alexandria (the author explicitly quotes these sources), but also on treatises by Heymericus of Campo and Pseudo-Aquinas (their works are not induced by the author). Concerning the substance of the edited question, the most interesting and “original” is a kind of ignorance of the historical background of the problem of universals and the occurrence of quite numerous mistakes. Mostly they can be easily explained, since they often arise from improper decipheration of abbreviation, overinterpretation or basing on a corrupted source. The accumulated mistakes lead the author to draw his own (singular) conclusions, that all testify the correctness of the Aristotle’s sentence: Parvus error in principio maximus erit in fine.
