    “When this you see, remember me”. War cemeteries of Western Galicia in light of new research problems and perspectiveThe article is a first scholarly attempt to identify and consider new perspectives and research problems related to the Great War cemeteries located in Western Galicia. Research on the cemeteries’ forms, origins and ideological expression that has been conducted so far in the field of art history becomes only a prelude for further interdisciplinary deliberations which remain heavily indebted to visual studies, semiotics, performance studies and memory studies. Consequently, Galician cemeteries are seen as (1) codified texts of culture and potential places of memory, (2) texts of culture that bear generic traces of tragedy as well as (3) performative texts of culture. As a result, new hypotheses and research postulates are laid out.

    Dialog to przejaw właściwych relacji międzyludzkich, jakie powinny charakteryzować nie tylko społeczność, tworzoną przez rodzinę, ale także narody. Jest on drogą do pojednania i budowania więzi. Kojarzy się z małżeństwem, rodziną, stosunkami międzynarodowymi. Ich symbol to wyciągnięte do siebie dłonie lub ręce splecione, zatrzymane w uścisku, ale też zwrócone ku sobie twarze. Wskazują na to demotywatory, dzieła malarskie, eseje, fotografie, myśli, plakaty, płaskorzeźby, przysłowia, wiersze. Tak różne gatunki i formy przekazu, zróżnicowane przez tworzywo i odbiorcę, potwierdzają fakt, że nie tylko słowa uzewnętrzniają dialog i pojednanie. W ich perspektywie i recepcji dialog i pojednanie to we współczesnym świecie wartości właściwie postrzegane i kontekstowo interpretowane jako zawsze konieczne w relacjach człowiek-człowiek. Powinny one być kształcone na gruncie rodziny.
    Dialogue is a sign of proper interpersonal relations that should be characteristic not only of family community but also of nations. It constitutes the way to reconciliation and creating bonds. It is associated with marriage, family, international relations. It is symbolized by stretched or entwined hands, stopped in the moment of being shaken, but also faces turned to each other. We can observe it in demotivators, paintings, essays, photographs, thoughts, posters, reliefs, proverbs, poems. Such a wide range of genres and media, different in their substance and their addressee, support the fact that dialogue and reconciliation are not only expressed by words. from their perspective and in their reception, dialogue and reconciliation are properly perceived values, contextually interpreted as always necessary in interpersonal relations in the contemporary world. they should be cultivated in the family environment.

    Children raised in today’s globalised world face an enormous, globally available and diverse range of verbal and non-verbal messages from the outside every day. In the era of prevailing consumerism, this multitude of information creates new, artificial needs that bring chaos to the children’s world. Human needs, as presented by Maslow, starting with physiological needs, through the need of safety, belonging, love, respect, knowledge and recognition are being redefined and disorganised in common understanding. The following considerations outline the result of the analysis of the content and form of several popular culture texts selected from among all the texts available on the Polish market – the Świerszczyk magazine, aimed at children.

    W artykule podjęto próbę krytycznej analizy futurystycznej projekcji kultury przez pryzmat jej wytworów w zmieniającym się technologicznie społeczeństwie. W dobie powszechnej cyfryzacji notowany jest znaczący spadek czytelnictwa zarówno w Polsce, jak i na świecie. Badacze wśród przyczyn tego stanu rzeczy zgodnie wymieniają nowe media. Analiza fenomenu przestrzeni filmów, seriali i Internetu pozwoliła na stworzenie alternatywnej teorii odbioru tekstów kultury. Postawienie w centrum teorii fikcji (Arkadiusz Żychliński) oraz hipoteza ery postpiśmiennej, w której kluczowym elementem jest transfer przeżyć (Jacek Dukaj), stanowi próbę kreowania nowej humanistyki (lub też jej braku) wraz z jej elementami teoretycznymi i metodologicznymi. Alternatywne spojrzenie na przyszłość pozwala na krytyczną, quasi-filozoficzną analizę poczynań człowieka.
    The article attempts to critically analyse the futuristic projection of culture through the prism of its products in a technologically changing society. In the era of widespread digitisation, there is a significant decrease in readership, both in Poland and worldwide. Among the reasons for this, researchers unanimously mention new media. The analysis of the phenomenon of the space of films, series and the Internet allowed to create an alternative theory of the reception of cultural texts. Placing the theory of fiction (Arkadiusz Żychliński) and the hypothesis of the post-written era, in which the key element is the transfer of experiences (Jacek Dukaj) at the centre of the theory of fiction (Arkadiusz Żychliński) and the hypothesis of the post-written era, in which the key element is the transfer of experiences (Jacek Dukaj) is an attempt to create a new humanities (or the lack thereof) with its theoretical and methodological elements. An alternative view of the future allows for a critical, quasi-philosophical analysis of human actions.

    The article focuses on intertextual relationships observed between literature and painting. The visual and linguistic systems comprising these art forms belong to different semiotic codes, which materialise through secondary modelling systems. The modelling systems, in turn, consist of relational signs and are governed by rules allowing for alternative modes of combination. The relational signs are ontologically discrete and, as a result, have a greater connotative than denotative potential. The rules of combination are restricted by literary genres, composition, and a painting perspective that constitute the macrostructure of a text. The aim of the article is to present how languages and visual signs express the same mental operations and establish an intertextual dialogue in a literary and visual text. The premise of the study is the assumption that a word and a picture are equivalent and translatable. Therefore, the grounds for their description should be the composition of signs and its relationship with other texts of culture, not the form that constitutes them

    Opis:
    The contemporary practice of creating official animal burial sites exhibits certain analogies with cemeteries, which function not only as burial sites for humans but also as complex symbols of remembering the dead. Both are macro-signs, manifested through verbal and non-verbal codes. Human cemeteries are characterised by greater symbolic complexity and diversity, deriving from centuries-old cultural and religious traditions. The linguistic and non-linguistic actions performed with respect to cemeteries, in the broadly understood situational context, are closely related to the sphere of sacrum, represented by the symbol of the cross. Although pet cemeteries are identical to human cemeteries in terms of certain code elements (including headstone inscriptions, photographs, and figural sculptures), such cemeteries are less complex and relate chiefly to the sphere of profanum, represented by symbols of the widespread myth of the Rainbow Bridge. However, the common denominator of both macro-signs are the linguistic and non-linguistic actions that are inspired by the feelings of sadness, love, and gratitude.
    Obserwowane współcześnie zjawisko powstawania oficjalnych grzebowisk dla zwierząt opiera się w określonych aspektach na analogiach do cmentarzy, traktowanych nie tylko jako miejsce pochówku ludzi, lecz także jako złożony symbol pamięci o nich. Oba typy miejsc należy traktować jako makroznaki reprezentowane przez kod werbalny i niewerbalny. Cmentarze dla ludzi charakteryzuje większa złożoność i różnorodność symboliki, opartej na wielowiekowej tradycji zarówno w ujęciu kulturowym, jak i religijnym. Działania językowe i pozajęzykowe, dokonywane w szeroko rozumianej ramie sytuacyjnej, są ściśle związane ze sferą sacrum, reprezentowaną przez symbol krzyża. W wypadku cmentarzy dla zwierząt, mimo że charakteryzują je tożsame elementy kodów (np. inskrypcje nagrobne, fotografie, rzeźby figuralne), to jednak ich realizacja przybiera mniej złożoną formę i opiera się głównie na sferze profanum reprezentowanej przez symbole związane ze współcześnie rozpowszechnionym mitem o tęczowym moście. Cechą wspólną dla obu makroznaków są działania językowe i pozajęzykowe motywowane przez uczucia tęsknoty, miłości i wdzięczności.

    In the text were presented numerous and in-depth relations of the Russian emigration poet, for years staying in Paris, with Poland. Attention was drawn to the translation work and to the translation of Polish prose texts, above all distinguishing Gorbaniewska’s translation achievements in relation to the poets and the Polish poetry itself. The poetess’ articles, reviews and statements bringing the Russian reader closer to the Polish culture, historical and political events as well as current facts were also discussed. Gorbaniewska’s original poems devoted to Polish political activists, filmmakers, editors and representatives of literature were described.

    The poem Colantonio – S. Gierolamo e il Leone, although it was written as early as the end of the 1950s, translated abroad and published, among others in the German book Inschrift, does not appear in any Polish collection of the poet's lyrical poems. A Polish reader could find the mentioned text among the young poet's letters to Jerzy Zawiejski or in a special edition of “Dekada Literacka” published in 1999. Among the considerable number of experts on the works of the author of Inscription only Tomasz Garbol devoted some attention to it in his valuable monograph “Chrzest ziemi. Sacrum w poezji Zbigniewa Herberta (Baptism of the Earth. Sacrum in Zbigniew Herbert's Poetry). The history of the text and its inter-texts allows verification of some of the researcher's theses about its interpretation. It seems that the poem is first of all about the relation between “I” and “another”, about an encounter. It is not without a sense of humor that the poet writes that the unexpected intensity of relations between the figures went much beyond the expected form of a conventional contact, it surpassed not only the mental habits of the society, but also surprised the main protagonists, who, owing to it, suddenly felt challenged in their own being and forced to undergo a drastic existential change.

    Foreign language and culture teaching have recently been widely addressed by theoreticians and practitioners alike. This paper sets out to report a classroom-based study which explored EFL learners’ reception of coursebook culture-focused texts. The data collected in the study was used to identify different dimensions of learners’ interest stimulated by the texts they read. The findings have some potential implications for taking an intercultural perspective in foreign language teaching.

    Jak brzmi lato? to podsumowanie projektu wzmacniającego kompetencje międzykulturowe dzięki samodzielnej pracy z tekstami kultury popularnej. Przebieg projektu można określić następująco: faza wstępna – próba analizy i interpretacji tekstów literackich i fragmentów polskich piosenek, faza właściwa (autonomiczna) – od poszukiwania polskich utworów o wskazanych kryteriach i dobierania na podstawie własnych skojarzeń podobnych tekstów chińskiej kultury popularnej, po realizację zadań translatorskich – przekład chińskich tekstów na język polski. Ważną częścią projektu była współpraca z rówieśnikami, tzw. student buddies na etapie selekcji utworów. Dzięki realizacji niniejszego projektu studenci mogli rozwijać kompetencje w zakresie pisania, interpretowania tekstów kultury popularnej oraz porównywania kultur. Prześledzenie działań krok po kroku ma służyć krytycznej autorefleksji co do efektywności tego typu działania i wyciągnięciu wniosków na przyszłość, umożliwiających wprowadzenie usprawnień.
    What does summer sound like? is a summary of the project strengthening intercultural competence through independent work with texts of popular culture. The course of the project can be described as follows: the initial phase – an attempt to analyze and interpret literary texts and fragments of Polish songs, the proper (autonomous) phase – from searching for Polish songs with the indicated criteria and selecting, based on their own associations, similar texts of Chinese popular culture, to the implementation of translation tasks – translating Chinese texts into Polish. An important part of the project was cooperation with peers, the so-called student buddies at the stage of song selection. Through the implementation of this project, students were expected to develop competence in writing, interpreting texts of popular culture and in comparing cultures. Tracing the activities comprising the project step by step is intended to be a critical self-reflection on the effectiveness of this type of operation and to draw conclusions for the future, enabling improvements to be made.

    The article discusses problems for native speakers and foreigners when reading literary texts during Polish language classes. Two important books are presented here (K. Koziołek, 2006; A. Janus¬ Sitarz, 2009). It also refers to publications about the importance of literature in teaching and the role of the teacher (J. Kowalikowa 2004, B. Chrząstowska 1979, 2009). The author of the article also compares the theory of A. Janus¬ Sitarz (designed for teaching Polish as a mother tongue) with J. Spiro’s concept of 6 reading types (concerning the function of literary texts in teaching Polish as a foreign language). The author concentrates on the problem of responsible reading (as described by M.P. Markowski, 2000) and on teaching being understood as an invitation to a dialogue with text. K. Koziołek, A. Janus¬ Sitarz and C. Kramsch in glottodidactics recommend this kind of dialogic approach.

    In this paper the author discusses the effort to create a new concept of the interaction between a contemporary reader, being a pupil, student or teacher, and literature. Transitional changes to civilisation and culture occurring over the recent decades have had an impact on the situation of literature, which, as the art of speech, has acquired new carriers and has transformed traditional forms of its existence in culture, too. The addressee of literature is going to remain in dialogue with THE OTHER. This form of contact is becoming an absorbing form of dialogue: author – main character – addressee (tutee), as well as other recipients, being auditors. The new philosophy of THE OTHER corroborates the sense of this new modern notion of living up to literature formulated by Michał Paweł Markowski. It also derives from the insight into culture and theory of literature.

    Człowiek współczesny, uformowany w kręgu pisma i druku, nie myśli o słowach w kategoriach zdarzeń. Słowa przypominają mu raczej rzeczy, które nie są działaniem, są czymś martwym. Inaczej jest w tradycyjnej kulturze ustnej, w której słowo ma zdolność dokonywania zmian w świecie, jest słowem działającym, słowem sprawczym. Taki status ma słowo w zamówieniu. W tekście magicznym jest ono nie tyle odpowiednikiem myśli, co sposobem działania, zdarzeniem.
    Contemporary humans, conditioned by the omnipresence of writing and print, do not conceive of words in terms of events. Rather, words are seen as inanimate objects. It is different, though, in the traditional speech-based culture, in which a word, as an acting agent, can effect changes in the world. Such is the status of a word in magic spells. In texts of magic, a word is not a correlative of an idea but a way of acting, an event.

    The article is asort of analysis of hip hop lyrics in the context of their importance for identity formation process of young generation. Rap music, as one of the elements of hip hop culture, is a kind of special innovation for its audience. With rising interest for this musical genre and hip hop culture the discussion on formulating the issues through the prism of rap music’s message has been increasing. The article presents certain aspects of making sense to the reality, which surrounds young artists, as well as some attempts at interpretation of already formulated social messages and their content. On one hand, the content is presented as a piece of announcement or message, which expresses young generation identity through the music. On the other hand, the content is a kind of confrontation between young audience and various messages presented in particular piece of music. In the article various hip hop productions are analyzed. The analysis is based on objective attitude towards the problem and presents both positive and negative sides of the issue, which have an in uence on identity formation process of teenagers.

    Artykuł zawiera omówienie cech językowych pism o charakterze oficjalnym, kierowanych przez mieszkańców gminy Zakliczyn do Urzędu Miasta i Gminy Zakliczyn oraz do Gminnego Ośrodka Pomocy Społecznej w Zakliczynie. Materiał badawczy obejmuje 528 dokumentów (podania, wnioski, prośby, skargi). Autorzy pism są słabo wykształceni, zwykle bezrobotni lub pracujący na roli i mają niskie kompetencje językowe, co odzwierciedla się w językowo-stylistycznej stronie ich tekstów. W pismach uwidaczniają się m.in. wpływy fonetyki polszczyzny ogólnej i gwar pogórskich oraz wpływy (głównie leksykalne) polszczyzny potocznej. Teksty utrwalają także karykaturalne cechy stylu urzędowego, który piszący próbują naśladować.
    The objective of the article is to identify and discuss the linguistic features recorded in official papers submitted by the inhabitants of the Zakliczyn commune to the Zakliczyn Municipal and Communal Office and to the Local Social Welfare Centre in Zakliczyn. The research material includes 528 documents (applications, requests, complaints). People who wrote those papers are poorly educated, usually unemployed or working as farmers. The linguistic and stylistic dimension of those texts reveals a low level of the authors’ linguistic skills. The texts reflect, inter alia, the influence of the phonetics of Polish standard linguistic code and the phonetic features of the Highland local dialects, as well as the lexis of colloquial Polish. The texts imitate some features of the offices’ style what cause a caricature effect.

    This article examines the problem of the significance of literature, not just folk literature, in Ryszard Berwiński's Studies in Folk Literature from the Historical and the Scholarly Perspective, published in Poznań in 1854. This subject was largely marginalized in discussions of this magisterial work because of what could seem as the author's inordinate preoccupation with demonology. This article looks again at his approach, which deserves a reappraisal. The discussion is divided into three parts. The first part examines the terms used by Berwiński to describe folk literature and texts that are connected with it in various ways, which for him and other 19th‑century researches constituted the essence of folklore. The second part focuses on those types of texts Berwiński regarded as crucial for the study of the sources of folk belief, while the third reviews his vision of the cultural and social role of literature in the 19th century. Together, these analyses reconstruct Berwiński's view on the functioning of literature in folklore studies and, more broadly, in the processes of the creation of a communal identity.

    One of the goals of foreign language education is to prepare learners to the role of intercultural mediators, as indicated in such documents as National Standards for Foreign Language Education or The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Research on culture and its relation to language has a long tradition and reveals a complex and also dynamic nature of the concept. Culture has also been present, although to a different extent, in the long practice of foreign language teaching. However, our understanding of cultural competence in a multicultural and multilingual European Union, which sets goals in the area of education in its Member States, has been evolving. In the article we will discuss different concepts of culture proposed by such researchers as Hofstede (1980, 1991), Binnett (1993), Weaver (2001), and Byram (1997), as well as various concepts of approaching culture in the foreign language education context. We will also look at challenges faced by Polish learners and teachers in the foreign language classroom.

    The paper refers to this trend of hermeneutics, whose representatives understand the interpretation as "articulated understanding". The texting, including paraphrase, the translation of someone else's language, is a prerequisite for the existence of cultural space, so that a critical view and cognitive verification of another narrative is possible. In the case of Maciej Zaremba, we are dealing with a reporter who writes Swedish about Swedes as an outsider, that is – keeping the distance and ability to see what the Swedes do not want or cannot see with their own eyes. It explores the areas of action of the "Swedish norm", visible from the outside, invisible "from the inside", just as the recognition of otherness and a peculiar value of some culture is possible for foreigners. Natives themselves are not able to recognize their standards (also assess) without the participation of outsiders. For Zaremba, writing is an act of disagreement with the uncritical acceptance of otherness, while using critical negation language and analytical tools with a more conceited intention than an overtly damning one. In this new incarnation, the author himself calls himself a "translator between cultures", whose strength lies in the fact that he has retained the ability to marvel, to expand his imagination and to seek new language means, to clearly separate facts from opinions. It is a vision of a man building a bridge between two cultures, and his ideal is subjects of resistance and non-toxic communication standards are his ideal.
    Referat nawiązuje do tego nurtu hermeneutyki, którego reprezentanci pojmują interpretację jako „zrozumienie wyartykułowane”. Utekstowienie, w tym także parafraza, przekład cudzego języka, jest warunkiem zaistnienia w przestrzeni kulturowej, dzięki czemu możliwy jest krytyczny ogląd i poznawcza weryfikacja innej narracji. W wypadku Macieja Zaremby mamy do czynienia z reportażystą, który pisze po szwedzku o Szwedach jako outsider, to znaczy – zachowując dystans i zdolność widzenia tego, czego Szwedzi nie chcą albo nie mogą zobaczyć własnymi oczyma. Odkrywa obszary działania „normy szwedzkiej”, widzialnej od zewnątrz, niewidocznej „od wewnątrz”, tak jak rozpoznanie inności i swoistej wartości jakieś kultury możliwe jest dla obcokrajowców. Tubylcy sami swoich norm rozpoznać (także ocenić) nie są w stanie bez udziału innoziemców. Pisanie dla Zaremby jest aktem niezgody na bezrefleksyjną akceptację inności, jednocześnie używa języka krytycznej negacji i narzędzi analitycznych z intencją bardziej koncyliacyjną niż jawnie potępiającą. W tym nowym wcieleniu sam autor nazywa się „tłumaczem między kulturami”, którego siła polega na tym, że zachował zdolność do dziwienia się, poszerzania wyobraźni i poszukiwania nowych środków językowych, do wyrazistego oddzielania faktów od opinii. Jest to wizja człowieka budującego pomost między dwoma kulturami, a jego ideałem są tematy stawiające opór i nietoksyczne standardy komunikacyjne.
