Opis:
In computer-assisted language learning (CALL), technological tools are often used both as an end and as a means to an end (Levy & Stockwell, 2006). Microsoft PowerPoint is an example of the latter as it is commonly used in oral presentations in classrooms. However, many student presentations are often boring as students generally read from text-heavy PowerPoint slides. Such presentations do not assist students in developing their oral presentation skills. Pecha Kucha (PK) is an innovative and creative PowerPoint presentation format that can help to overcome this. It features the use of twenty slides containing visuals with minimal text that are presented in twenty seconds. This study reports on the use of the PK presentation format to enhance the development of second language (L2) oral presentation skills among tertiary students at Universiti Sains Malaysia. It was carried out among thirty distant learners who worked in groups to complete a task-based activity using the PK format. Data were gathered from students’ focus group interview responses as well as the researcher’s observations to inform the impact of this format on the development of presentation skills and the challenges faced in employing it. Findings revealed that while the format is functional in supporting collaborative learning and fostering L2 oral presentation skills, it posed challenges to students with low proficiency levels. To maximise the potential benefits of PK as a CALL strategy, this study, therefore, suggests the inclusion of more pedagogical support and training.

Opis:
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the paper is to identify and quantify selected salary expectations determinants (including gender) of Accounting and Controlling students at Cracow University of Economics. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: We conduct a survey of expected salaries among students . We use Shapiro-Wilk W test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test for initial analysis. We then build econometric linear models in which salary expectations are dependent variables, whereas GPA, holding a foreign language certificate, gender and age are independent variables. We estimate these models by OLS. We use Huber/White robust standard errors to assess statistical significance of each parameter. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: Graduates of accounting programmes are sought at the labour market. For cognitive purposes and educational policy implications it is of utmost importance to understand which observable factors differentiate students in their salaries’ expectations. RESEARCH RESULTS: We find a number of variables that are statistically significant and associated with the expected salary. Higher salaries for graduates of Accounting and Controlling major are expected by: students with lower GPA, holders of a foreign language certificate, male students, younger students. On the contrary, lower salaries are expected by students with higher GPA, students who do not hold a foreign language certificate, female students, older students. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Students differ among themselves – thus we observe various salary expectations. Nonetheless, some of the obtained results are puzzling. We find that female students demand lower salaries. Similarly it is surprising that students with lower GPA expect higher salaries. As a result, we recommend to further investigate determinants of salary expectations.

Opis:
The purpose of the article is to present women’s aspirations for access to academic education in Poland at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Educational inequalities accompanied women at all levels of education. However, the biggest problems were encountered by women in pursuit of tertiary education. It was this path of development that was inaccessible to them for the longest time in Poland. The difficult economic situation of Poles during the Partitions over time forced the society to slowly change the thinking and approach to the academic and professional activity of women. Due to the lack of opportunities to study in the partitioned area, the only possibility for Polish women to study at a higher level was academic emigration. The most common destinations were Switzerland, France, and, in the last decade of the 19th century, also Belgium. The beginnings of the practical struggle for access to tertiary education by women date back to 1892–1910. At this time, emancipation associations were involved in petitioning university authorities to grant women permission to study. This article is an attempt to trace the educational possibilities of women in Poland, with special emphasis placed on women’s aspirations to access academic education at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The article uses the methods of historical and pedagogical research and text analysis.

Opis:
The article discusses the non-adjustment of the statutory limit relating to doctoral students, which sets out the right to a survivor’s pension. First some general information on the benefits, with particular emphasis on the periodic nature of the benefit, is presented on the basis of selected decisions of the Supreme Court. This is followed by some examples of statutory regulations that equalise as well as differentiate the rights and obligations of doctoral students with those of other students. These findings are subsequently compared with the existing constitutional norms. A special emphasis has been placed on the principle of equality before the law and the right to social assistance from the State in this particular case. References have been made to the doctrine and the previous judicial decisions of the Constitutional Tribunal. In the final  summary, some legislative amendments are proposed.
Artykuł porusza pomijaną w dotychczasowym piśmiennictwie kwestię niedostosowania ustawowej granicy wyznaczającej prawo do renty rodzinnej w stosunku do uczestników studiów trzeciego stopnia (doktorantów).
