Opis:
The aim of this article is to present an interpretation of the true nature of what was built at the site of the Great Aten Temple at Amarna (Tell el-Amarna), and to show that king Akhenaten had a wider and more varied ideological and cultic vision than he is commonly credited with, in which everyone could appreciate the nature of the god Aten. His religious vision was directed towards intellectual and ideological goals, but also had an economic context. The results of latest archaeological work at the site of Great Temple of Aten (‘House of the Aten’), in the opinion of Professor Barry Kemp suggest the existence of a ‘people’s temple’, which explains much of what the excavations are uncovering.

Opis:
The recent research in the North-Eastern Nile Delta proves that a great quantity of sites existed here during Naqada III period. These sites undoubtedly played an important role both in the developing contacts between Egypt and Canaan, as well as in the processes which led to the formation of the Egyptian state. Further data concerning the Naqada III settlements in the Nile Delta have been obtained recently, during the Polish Archaeological Survey in Ash-Sharqiyyah Governorate. Most of the work in 2010 concentrated at Tell el-Murra and Tell Abu el-Halyat and this article focuses on the pottery found at these two sites. The occurrence of potsherds dated to the Protodynastic, Early Dynastic and Old Kingdom periods at Tell el-Murra points at the fact that the latest occupation at that site should be dated to the latter. Moreover, potsherds were also found decorated with a zig-zag pattern, which are quite characteristic of the Predynastic-Lower Egyptian Culture. Most of the pottery from Tell Abu el-Halyat is dated to the Early Dynastic period, but the occurrence of several fragments which could belong both to the earlier and later forms may indicate that it was probably inhabited also during the Protodynastic as well as Old Kingdom (?) periods.

Inflammatory states usually precede the development of an organ or systemic pathologies. Whether a given infection that causes such a state has a chance to develop, depends on many individual and environmental factors. Post-inflammatory changes can be traced in the osseous material. Therefore, macroscopic, radiological and  histological analysis was performed  on the upper epiphysis of the right fibula (caput fibulae) with a lesion within the articular surface turned towards the tibia (facies articularis capitis fibulae). The research material came from the excavations led in Tell Masaikh (Syria).

Achenaten
Opis:
33,000 years ago, 15,000 people, or perhaps 20,000 or a little more, following their king, began to settle a wide and hitherto unoccupied desert portion on the Nile in Middle Egypt. This place, a place of sunrise, was later termed Achet-Aton ‘Horizon of the Sun-disk’, a sacred territory dedicated to the sun god Aten, by Akhenaten (‘devoted to the Aten’) otherwise Amenhotep IV (1347-1332 BC). The focus of this article is to engage with the controversy surrounding the exclusivism of the god Aten. We will propose that King Achenaten intended to create a sacred space for the god Aten, confining the new religion to the site of Akhet-Aten. Akhet-Aten was not conceived of as a typical city (in the modern sense), but was essentially a royal residence with a tract of sacred land attached, with a new style of ceremonial architecture, as for example The Long Temple, the field of offering-tables, and a string of courts open to the sky, where many ceremonies were held in the open sunlight. The huge enclosure the Great Aton Temple was surely designed to accommodate large crowds of people.         In the context of the territory surrounding the city, the positions of the boundary stelae make it clear that the sacred territory took was not only determined by the King’s religious vision. The visual arts, and in particular the architecture, were embedded in a sacred geography and landscape. The complex became an extraordinary tool to dramatize Akhenaten’s authority.

Tell el-Amarna; Kom el-Nana, Late Roman period
Tell el-Amarna; Kom el-Nana, późny Rzym
Opis:
The archaeological remains of Tell el-Amarna (a site in Middle Egypt, which was rediscovered in the early 19th century) are not limited only to the New Kingdom period. Human activity from Middle/Upper Palaeolithic is attested in flint scatters on the desert plain. From the Old Kingdom period fragments of pottery suggest the site served a settlement at this date, probably connected with the Hatnub alabaster (travertine) quarries. The most substantial reoccupation of the site, before the present day, dates to the Late Roman period, when buildings and cemeteries were inserted among the ruins of the New Kingdom city: most notably, the monastery at Kom el-Nana was located in the southern part of the Main City on the line of the Royal Road. In the same period, at Amarna the North Rock Tombs were reoccupied and assigned a new purpose as a settlement for a Christian community.

In 2006, research in the western part of the administrative and cultic complex at Tell el-Farcha (Eastern Nile Delta) was begun. The eastern part of this complex was examined in 2001, when i.a. a votive deposit spilled in one of the rooms was discovered. During the 2006 excavations a room (8 × 3.30 m) was unveiled, where several cultic vessels were found as well as a small jar filled with votive artefacts. There were 62 specimens in this jar, mostly figurines from hippopotamus tusks. The entire deposit, of a unique historical and artistic value, was made before the middle of the first dynasty and is so far the only deposit of this kind firmly dated. It includes i.a. depictions of women, children, captives, one of the anonymous Egyptian rulers, fantastic creatures, and most of all dwarfs.

As “Wolfsberg” did not have the dimensions of the nearby prehistoric fortifications at Sântana and Corneşti, the site was not targeted by archaeological investigations and it has only been occasionally mentioned in the secondary literature so far. During the year 2014 a team of researchers have started the investigations with the site’s topographic survey, followed by a systematic ground survey, geophysical measurements, as well as aerial photographs. Three years later, a small test trench was excavated in order to attempt dating the Middle Bronze Age tell in terms of the absolute chronology

The first stage focuses on field studies, during which a general geological profile was prepared and samples for laboratory tests were collected. In the next stage, laboratory analyses were conducted: with the use of binocular magnifying glasses, small fractions being the result of the slaking of fragments of the samples from the profile were examined. Then, mineralogical and petrographic examinations of dried bricks were conducted—these included determining the mineral and grainy composition of samples from light and dark bricks. Later, anthropogenic examinations of coals were conducted; the aim of the analysis was to determine their sorption properties. Finally, the results were presented, which included sketches, photographs, microphotographs, tables, and diagrams; the research was summarized, and conclusions that could be drawn from it were demonstrated. The paper helped solve interesting problems on the border of mineralogy, geology, and archeology. All of the conducted research is innovative in nature and contributes much new and important information helping explore this site and the activities of people from thousands of years ago.
Obejmowały one określenie składu mineralnego i ziarnowego próbek z cegieł jasnych i ciemnych. Wszystkie przeprowadzone badania mają charakter nowatorski i wnoszą dużą ilość nowych i istotnych informacji pozwalających poznać stanowisko oraz aktywność ludzi przed tysiącami lat.

The paper presents preliminary results of an analysis of 51 samples of plant macrofossils coming from various archaeological contexts from the site of Tell Arbid in Northeast Syria. The contexts were dated mainly to the 3rd millennium BC (EJI–EJV) with a few being of 2nd millennium BC date (Khabur Ware and Mitanni periods). Cultivated plants were represented by cereals and pulses. The cultivation of at least three cereal species is documented, including a hulled variety of two-rowed barley, glumed einkorn and/or emmer wheat, and a species of naked wheat, probably macaroni wheat. Vegetables included lentil, bitter vetch, grass pea, and garden pea. Plants from the Ninevite 5 period (EJI–EJII) and their significance in the Tell Arbid economy are discussed in greater detail owing to the highest number of samples studied.

Excavations at Tell el-Farkha in 2012 and 2013 were conducted on all three koms making up the site. The upper layers excavated on the Western Kom during the first campaign were connected with the beginning of phase 4 at Tell el-Farkha and the lower layers with phase 3. A few poorly preserved rooms were unearthed, mainly in the southern part of the trench. Also part of a brewery dated to Naqada IIIA1 was explored. A rectangular building with thick walls discovered on the Central Kom was most probably the remains of a big Naqadian store. Results of geophysical research from 2000 were verified; excavations uncovered a round edifice, 7 m in diameter, surrounded by a wall almost 2 m thick. In a test trench on the Eastern Kom, a rectangular room (2.50 m by 6 m) with two regular entrances from north and south was unearthed. In the main trench, work concentrated on the area north and south of the monumental mastaba uncovered a few seasons earlier.

Technology-enhanced language learning (TELL) is the subject of this article, focusing on the results of a survey conducted among teachers of Polish as a foreign language (TPFL) after they have accumulated one year’s worth of experience in holding remote classes. The results have been juxtaposed with those of a study conducted in 2017 on a similar group of respondents. Intended as a reconnaissance, that earlier poll aimed to assess teachers’ (including mainly academic teachers’) attitude towards computer-aided teaching and the possibility of using information and communication technologies (ICTs) in teaching Polish. The most recent study is intended to serve as a basis for comparison with the previous findings to assess the changes in viewpoint and attitude among the teachers who had had to move their workplace from the classroom into the virtual realm practically overnight. The questionnaire study covered 65 individuals. The analysis of thereturned answers is quantitative and qualitative. Additionally, the technique of linguistic analysis based on phenomenological methodology was used in this research into the attitudes of teachers and methodologists of Polish as a foreign language. The research findings point to the significant development of technological expertise and of skills related to using various kinds of educational applications and platforms by teachers, but also underscore the need to improve teaching methods based on an action-oriented approach, to make full use of the possibilities of language teaching by conducting genuine communication activities in a virtual environment.

Opis:
In the light of new finds (especially from Tell el-Farkha) it seems that the Nile Delta sites had great significance not only in developing contacts between Egypt and Canaan but also in the process which finally led to the formation of the Egyptian state. It is also obvious that a number of sites of that period occur in that region (especially in the North-Eastern part of the Nile Delta). Several of them were localized during the surveys conducted in the discussed area almost twenty years ago but only a few of them were later researched archaeologically. Further data concerning the early history of the Nile Delta were obtained recently (2008) during the Polish Archaeological Survey in Ash-Sharqiyyah Governorate. The results of the survey were quite promising. Of the six sites visited, two yielded pottery material from the beginning of the Egyptian state. Of these two, the site of Tell el-Murra seems to be most suitable for further research due to the good state of preservation, the results of geophysical research and geological core drillings as well as the chronology of the material found on the surface.

This article offers publication of seventeen miniature vessels discovered in Hellenistic strata of Athribis (modern Tell Atrib) during excavations carried out by Polish-Egyptian Mission in the 1980s/1990s. The vessels, made of clay, faience and bronze, are mostly imports from various areas within the Mediterranean, including Sicily and Lycia, and more rarely – local imitations of imported forms. Two vessels carry stamps with Greek inscriptions, indicating that they were containers for lykion, a medicine extracted from the plant of the same name, highly esteemed in antiquity. The vessels may be connected with a healing activity practised within the Hellenistic bath complex.

Opis:
The spectacle idol from Polish excavations in northeastern Syria belongs to the class of artifacts that are known from different regions of the Ancient Near East – Syria, Mesopotamia and Elam – and that have been dated to the Uruk period (broadly speaking, the fourth millennium bc). The name derives from a characteristic shape that resembles the eye idols from Tell Brak. Indeed, the largest assemblage of spectacle idols was discovered at Tell Brak, in an older cultural level within the Eye Temple sector, leading a number of scholars to the conclusion that eye idols evolved from their spectacle predecessors. The ritual function of the eye idols has never been put into doubt, unlike that of spectacle idols, which has been heavily debated. The spectacle idol from Tell Abu Hafur affords the opportunity to discuss the different ideas put forward regarding the function of the objects and to return to the original interpretation of these as associated with worship based on an analysis of the iconography of contemporary glyptic art and a comparative review of finds from diverse archaeological sites.

Opis:
Works on the necropolis at Tell el-Farkha have reached the 9th season and resulted in locating over 100 burials. In this situation, almost every succeeding campaign was bringing such a number of new data that preliminary statements were continuously being changed almost year by year. Numerous analyses of pottery, stone vessels, architectural details and stratigraphy, finally, seem to lead to some more profound conclusions. According to them, all graves at Tell el-Farkha have been divided into 3 main chronological groups. Group 1 is the oldest one. It is dated back from Naqada IIIB phase to the middle of Dynasty 1. People buried in the graves of this group represented wealthy society, and they also experimented, trying to reach a perfect grave form. The process is the best explanation of the presence of so many “strange” structures and differences in position of the deceased, but on the other hand, also numerous elements of typically early dynastic burial custom (e.g. niche façades or subsidiary burials) seem to emerge in that time. Tombs belonging to the group 2 come from the middle of Dynasty 1 to late Dynasty 1 or even to early Dynasty 2. Main social features they express are stressing of wealth inequality and presence of clearly definite and quite strictly obeyed rules of burial ritual. However the graves of the younger group are clearly a continuation of the older custom and so the origin of both societies must have been similar, the changes in orientation of tombs as well as examples of younger burials cutting into older ones suggest that both groups were divided by short break in occupation of cemetery. The final phase (group 3) of the cemetery at Tell el-Farkha was surely separated from the previous ones by a much longer period of time. The tombs representing phase in question are distributed only in the highest part of the tell, and may be dated on the basis of stratigraphic observations to the beginning of the Old Kingdom. They characterise of very simple burial custom (all the bodies were found resting in simple pits) and are hardly equipped with any objects.

The sixth season of fieldwork of the Tell el-Retaba Archaeological Mission has brought a number of significant results. For the first time remains of a Hyksos settlement (beside the previously known cemetery) were uncovered. Exploration of a large, regularly planned building, divided into a number of standardized flats, brought new evidence for the reconstruction of the function and organization of a strongly fortified town, which existed on the site during the Twentieth Dynasty. Remains of a Third Intermediate Period settlement showed that after the New Kingdom there was a clear change in the settlement pattern in Tell el-Retaba.

Excavations at the Western Kom were continued within a former trench that had been opened in 2006–2007, extended to the north in 2009 and further excavated in the next season. On the interior face of the eastern wall of Room 240 associated with the Protodynastic administrative-cultic centre, traces of thin wooden posts were preserved. Wooden planks had been fixed to it, thus forming a kind of an inner cladding of this wall. A complex of rooms of clearly utilitarian function was unearthed in the northern and south-eastern part of the trench. The pottery uncovered in Seasons 2011– 2012 indicates that the upper layers excavated during the campaign are contemporaneous with the end of Phase 4 at Tell el-Farkha (i.e., Naqada IIIA1/IIIB) and the deeper layers with Phase 3 (Naqada IID2/IIIA1). Fragments of imported Near Eastern pottery were discovered, notably fragments of so called Tell Erani C style vessels and a small piece of a vessel with white stripe-painted decoration, which has its counterpart only in Megiddo, Israel. On the stratigraphic interface of the administrativecultic centre and the Naqada residence, a brewery dated to Naqada IIIA1 was uncovered.

Inflammatory states usually precede the development of an organ or systemic pathologies. Whether a given infection that causes such a state has a chance to develop, depends on many individual and environmental factors. Post-inflammatory changes can be traced in the osseous material. Therefore, macroscopic, radiological, and histological analysis was performed on the upper epiphysis of the right fibula (caput fibulae) with a lesion within the articular surface turned towards the tibia (facies articularis capitis fibulae). The research material came from the excavations led in Tell Masaikh (Syria).

During the 2012 season domestic layers from the Hyksos period were found, indicating that the site was occupied for the first time around the end of the Thirteenth and beginning of the Fifteenth Dynasties. Next to the houses three Hyksos graves were found. Archaeological work also revealed houses from the early Eighteenth Dynasty located just above the Hyksos structures in Area 7. Very interesting material came from the late Twentieth Dynasty and Third Intermediate Period houses excavated in Area 9. Rich pottery assemblages mostly of domestic character have been recovered from all of the structures.

Some new rooms northward and southward to the shrine were uncovered. The first ones seem to be erected in a hurry and for temporary use. Excavations within the shrine provided the most important results. New votive objects were discovered, scattered within the whole area of shrine as well as intentionally hidden beneath their floor and walls. Especially worth mentioning are well preserved specimen of so called hes-jar, fragment of pottery figurine (sitting boy?), collection of ivory figurines and finally geywacke spoon with a crocodile-shaped handle. Another findings (seal decorated with representations of gazelle and falcon-Horus, ostrich egg, gazelle horn), as well as comparison of them with similar artifacts discovered in other parts of the tell, allow us to hypothesize that this animals might symbolize the name of cult centre and the whole town at Tell el-Farkha or be linked to the divine forces worshiped in both discovered shrines.

Among terracottas found in Tell Atrib in the Nile Delta by the Polish-Egyptian archaeological mission, there are two incense burners with ‘horns’ and vine scroll decoration. Both objects were made from a double mould. The first one, found in 1989 (TA 89/166), is almost fully preserved; the second one, discovered in 1978 (TA 87/41), is just a small fragment of a similar object. Archaeological context allows to date the artifacts to the Ptolemaic or Roman period. The closest analogies are known from necropoleis in Alexandria, but similar objects are also attested outside Egypt. The soot traces visible on the better preserved specimen (TA 89/166) confirm that it was used for incense burning. The find context suggests that both objects could have been rather intended for domestic cult than for official religious practice or funerary rituals. The form of the burners, and the horn-shaped projections in particular, suggest their connection to the cult of Egyptian gods.

Opis:
The collection of clay zoomorphic figurines from Tell Arbid, a site in the Khabur river basin in northern Mesopotamia, comprises nearly 600 specimens, dated mainly to the 3rd and first half of the 2nd millennium BC. It consists of solid figurines and the much less numerous wheeled figurines and hollow figurines/zoomorphic vessels, as well as a single rattle in the form of a zoomorphic figurine. The animals represented include chiefly equids, sheep, goats, cattle, dogs and birds. The find context usually does not permit anything but a very broad dating, but an analysis of details of execution makes it possible to establish the chronology of particular objects. Identified chronological assemblages illustrate the character of zoomorphic representations in particular periods. A comparative analysis reveals, among others, diachronic changes in the popularity of representations of particular kinds of animals. These changes are considered in comparison with the results of an examination of the osteological material in an effort to observe whether they could reflect processes taking place in the animal economy of Tell Arbid.

Fieldworks at the Western Kom were carried out within the older trench that had been opened in 2006–2007 and further excavated in 2008. The important excavation results are related to architectural remains. Beneath the chapel with votive deposits next structures with storage vessels inside were discovered. Absence of architectural remains in the south-eastern part of the tell proved that in the Naqada III A-B the Western Kom was inhabited in a much smaller area that it was later. The upper layers excavated during these campaigns are connected to phase 4 at Tell el-Farkha (i.e. Naqada IIIA) and the lower layers to phase 3 (Naqada IID2/IIIA). Discovered stone and flint tools points than the stone vessels workshop was strictly connected to the cultic shrine. Analysis of animal remains and pottery confirm the exceptional role of these area in the Proto- and beginning of the Early Dynastic periods and we have gained a very strong evidence, that the Western Kom was the most significant area of the site in Tell el-Farkha and was related to the local elite. The imitations of Palestinian vessels and numerous pottery fragments of Near Eastern origin point to well developed trade with the Near East. Another proof for such activities are small objects of various shapes, which were probably used as tokens. They were discovered at all three tells in Tell el-Farkha.

Opis:
Tell el-Farkha was an important centre already in Predynastic times, when a great Lower Egyptian culture complex was erected on the Central Kom. Items found inside confirmed both the significant role played by the local elite and its relationship with the Levant and Upper Egypt. The first large Naqadian building was erected outside the town centre. This building and the whole settlement were destroyed (Naqada IIIA1) by the next group of Naqadians, probably connected with another political centre. They were the constructors of the oldest Egyptian mastaba. During the reign of Iry-Hor (middle of Naqada IIIB), the third group of Naqadians appeared at the site. The period between Naqada IIIA and middle of IIIB phase seems to have been a period of competition between the most influential Naqadian proto-kingdoms. In the middle of the First Dynasty, Tell el-Farkha changed its role: from the capital of a part of the Eastern Delta to a provincial town of only economic significance.

Opis:
Te niszczące wpływy zawilgocenia i obciążenia ciężarem budowli spowodowały lokalne deformacje cegieł, spoiwa i murów.
Archeological, geologic and mining research performed on a pre-dynastic mastaba, which dates 5 thousand years back, indicates the presence of some archeological layers under the object. Throughout the centuries the foundations and the walls have been destroyed by rains and flooding from the Nile. This destructive influence of moisture and the weight of the building itself have caused local deformations of bricks, binder and the walls. The preliminary mining project aims at detailed recognition and research of the base and the walls of the mastaba. Further steps include direct exploration of the anthropogenic layer, placed under the walls. The application of mining methods guarantees the stability of the historical walls of the mastaba without any deformations. After this exploration, it will be possible to replace this space with the material that would protect the stability of the preserved walls of the mastaba. In the future, this can be the basis for contemporary reconstructions of this incredibly valuable relic.

The paper deals with the results of excavation in 2014 and 2015 at the Tell el-Murra site in the northeastern part of the Nile Delta. The investigations covered a settlement mostly from the Old Kingdom period found in trench T5; more specifically, the investigated features seem primarily connected with food production. Settlement remains from the Naqada III–possibly Early Dynastic and Protodynastic(?) periods were also explored in trench S3B. Continued research on the Early Dynastic cemetery in trench S3 yielded 16 more graves, including simple pit burials and chamber graves. In several cases bodies had been placed in pottery coffins. The presence of several mud-brick walls, possibly associated with older settlement structures, was also confirmed within the lattermost trench. Altogether the research provided new data on the settlement architecture, site development processes and burial customs invoked in the beginnings of the Egyptian state.

Early Egyptian colonization in the Early Bronze I period is one of the most widely discussed issue in modern archaeology of the Near East. The text focuses on two sites of major importance: Egyptian Tell el-Farkha and Levantine Tel Erani. Discoveries of imported pottery both in Egypt and in Israel, as well as Egyptian-style brick architecture found at Tel Erani suggest that relations between these two regions were based on long-distance trade. The article briefly discusses the most significant imported finds at both sites and the socio-economic changes which followed interregional contacts.

Water jars are easily recognizable as a type owing to the strainer fitted into the neck of these vessels. This form was distinguished in the assemblage coming from the Polish excavations around Kom Sidi Youssuf in Tell Atrib, the site of ancient Athribis in the Nile Delta. The discussed vessels were made of Nile silt and richly painted on the surface. The article focuses on the decoration of these water containers, presenting a catalogue of motifs: geometrical, vegetal, zoomorphic, human and others. The set is dated to the 6th–7th century AD based on the excavation context and comparative studies of the so-called Coptic painted pottery from Egypt.

This paper will analyze Dzevad Karahasan’s novels The Eastern Diwan,Shahriar’s Ring and What the Ashes Tell, and it will do so by exploring thematisation and frames, authorship and manuscripts. In that context it is important to analyze the structural position of the authorwithin the text of the novel, his position inside the fi ctional society built within the plot, and to explore the themes and motifs of texts, scripts, writings and their overall importance, but also the meaning of the text to its fi nal recipient, the reader. The notion of writing is here considered in the sense of the Barthean term of scribing, and not only by hand, but by any other form of writing, copying, authorship and rewriting. The protagonists of Karahasan’s novels act as people who write, so the sole act of writing is made into a fundamental motif of the novel.

Terracotta figurines are one of the few iconographical sources available for the study of equids, their breeding and exploitation in Northern Mesopotamia in the third and first half of the second millennium BC. However, the insights offered by this category of artifacts have largely been unrecognized by scholars, what is particularly conspicuous in the Khabur River basin, where equid figurines are very common finds. A detailed analysis of this type of figured documents, especially of the hitherto unpublished assemblage from Tell Arbid, shows that among details marked on the figurines were characteristics of the separate equid species, elements of their equipment and details pointing to certain breeding practices. What makes the equid figurines from the Khabur region even more interesting is the fact that that some of the details were not represented on Near Eastern equid depictions in other media (dorsal and shoulder stripes, strapping of genitalia), have been attested for much later periods (trappers) or have been known solely from written documents (saddle bags, marking of animals).

Early Dynastic and Old Kingdom bread moulds belong to the type of vessels on which potmarks appear the most often, which is a phenomenon recorded during works conducted at different sites. Excavations carried out at the Tell el-Murra between 2011 and 2019 produced a significant number of vessels of this type with various marks. This paper is devoted to the 118 pre-firing marks from Early Dynastic and Old Kingdom bread moulds from the settlement layers at the Tell el-Murra. The paper comparatively analyses marks from two subsequent chronological periods, with the aim to test the validity of theories regarding their function and meaning, based on examples from Tell el-Murra. The study concludes that the high frequency of potmarks on bread forms was not accidental, but related to certain economic processes and changes, as also indicated in this paper.

In this study, we summarise the preliminary results of thirty years of investigations at the Polgár-Bosnyákdomb site. The significance of the site located on the one-time bank of the Tisza River is that it lies no more than 5 km away from the well-known Polgár-Csőszhalom settlement complex. One of our goals was to investigate the relation between the settlements in the Polgár Island micro-region and to identify the similarities and differences between them. It is quite obvious that with its estimated 70 hectares large extent, Polgár-Csőszhalom was a dominant settlement complex in this landscape during the earlier fifth millennium, while the Bosnyákdomb settlement, represented an entirely different scale with its 8 hectares and had a different role during this period. The AMS dates provide convincing evidence that the two settlements had been occupied simultaneously during one period of their lives. Despite their spatial proximity and chronological contemporaneity, the two settlements had a differing structural layout. Although both had a prominent stratified settlement mound that was separated from the single-layer settlement part by a ditch, the system of the ditches, their structure and, presumably, their social use differed substantially. This would suggest that each community constructed its settlement and architectural structures according to different spatial rules in the different locations of Polgár Island. Despite the spatial differences, we could identify traces of similar community events on the settlement mounds at Bosnyákdomb and Csőszhalom such as the recurring practice of house burning.  Despite the smaller excavated areas, we identified wholly different mortuary practices at Bosnyákdomb, diverging fundamentally from the funerary rites practiced at Csőszhalom. The bones of the deceased were secondarily deposited into the ditch of the central mound. The various cultural features discussed in the above indicate that the community responses of the groups settling and living in the Polgár area during the Late Neolithic to the environmental challenges of the land around them were embodied by a set of distinctive cultural behaviours. Nevertheless, certain elements in the colourful diversity of material features and their different levels outline the structure of a micro-regional network with Csőszhalom in its centre in the Upper Tisza region.

Opis:
This paper aims at analyzing relations between different types of clay figurines and models found at Tell Arbid, a site in northern Mesopotamia, in the Khabur region. Starting with a presentation of a set of third millennium BC clay objects – including an equid and an anthropomorphic figurines, as well as a wheel model – the author discusses those figurines which were deliberately shaped to fit, or to be combined with, other objects. Analyzing them against the backdrop of analogies from Mesopotamian iconographic sources allowed for defining some functional associations between the representations of males, wheeled vehicles and/or equids. The hypothetically reconstructed sets seem to reproduce scenes well-known from other media. Based on these observations, it is possible better to understand and to interconnect phenomena characteristic for the clay plastic art not just of the site but of the whole region: predominance of equids, prevalence of male over female images and popularity of model vehicles.

The paper aims to present different ways of showing religious and quasi-religious attitudes in contemporary Polish documentaries. The discussion is based on four feature-length films: Kites by Beata Dzianowicz (2008), Communion by Anna Zamecka (2016), Who Will Write Our History by Roberta Grossman (2018), and Tell No One by Tomasz Sekielski (2019). The author evaluates the methodological usefulness of reflection in the documentary of the “religious film” category used in Polish research and the concept of “transcendent(al) style” taken from Paul Schrader’s book. Occasionally touching upon the question of the relationship with audiences, the author also mentions the paradigm of Polish Romanticism present in contemporary culture.
